Next week is the one year anniversary for the Pyrosphere unveil (August 20th). We are literally going on one year arguing whether Ridley is a stage hazard or not.

Here is another question to all of you.

Suppose we get no confirmation of Stage Hazardley for the remainder of this month or during the first two weeks of September, but....

When Smash 4 3DS releases on September 13th in Japan, Ridley is not part of the roster.

What will be your assessment then?

Honestly, I could then see people claiming "Ridley is being held off as DLC".
Honestly, I'd have to wait at least a week after release to give up.

Because Ridley's demand is almost all in the west, he makes sense to try to hold off for a reveal until between the Japanese and English releases. Though Sakurai wouldn't wait too long, because he'd hate for the internet to make it for him. So within the week.

I heard that sold like hot cakes, and Shulk not being likely because no one outside? The fans had to make sure the game came to the US, as it would only be in Europe, and they said it was great!
I dunno I remember reading about the trouble getting it localized and then the limited amount of copies that would be made and I never got it :/

i mean, a year of this teasing and hype, if it turns out to be nothing... im done.
I don't know, I could appreciate Sakurai going that route just for how dirty it'd be. That having been said, I'd much prefer that Ridley makes it in as playable so this debate can finally end, not to mention all the salt that'd come flowing out from every corner of the net.

Honestly, I could then see people claiming "Ridley is being held off as DLC".
People really need to stop hyping the possibility of DLC for this game. I really feel the fact that they want the roster the same across both titles prevents that, since they'll want to take into account people who won't upgrade their SD card despite how cheap it is.

Ideally it'd happen, but eh. Nintendo.

North America: 0.40m 46.8%
+ Europe: 0.23m 27.1%
+ Japan: 0.16m 18.4%
+ Rest of the World: 0.07m 7.7%
= Global 0.86m

For those curious, you can find the source at www.vgchartz.com
Along with the information for Golden Sun: 1.76 million for the first game, 3.7 million for the series.
I put the sales numbers up there for you.

I have been saying for almost a year Ridley is a boss. Its all the other Ridley fans and supporters who have been saying I'm wrong. Like I said, its a shame my seniority means nothing. I just hope Ridley supporters will finally listen to what I have to say when it is confirmed his role in Smash 4 is relegated to the Pyrosphere.

I personally think the most logical time for Ridley's reveal would be the inevitable Smash Bros. Direct a week before the Japanese release.

If Ridley doesn't end up in the roster, Sakurai is just plain unintelligent. Especially after everything that's been said and done(or not done). I'd go so far as to say that Sakurai isn't even acting human simply because of how he's been building it up.

All of his behavior is pointing to Ridley being playable. Every single thing.

Wait, I thought vgchartz was unreliable
It is. But that's usually with newer released games. They tend to update their figures as reliable sources become available. The older the game, the more likely it is to be accurate.

If that's the case, he's not in SSB4 as playable. If he's a boss, he's not going to be DLC, and right now it's boss or playable.

I'll be holding off to perhaps wait for Smash 5, or perhaps get into modded Smash Bros. to support his inclusion there.

Its more than that. I have seen history repeat itself over and over. Most of the people in this thread have Smash 4 as their first go-around for Smash Bros. speculation. I have been doing this since Melee.

That doesn't mean things can't change. I mean history is history for a reason, am I right?

Then I won't get the 3DS version and only buy the Wii U one. Ridley being in the roster would make me preorder the 3DS version that same day (or go out and buy it if it's leaked after the game releases, but I doubt that will happen with all this teasing). My assessment if your statement is the case, however, would be that Ridley is only going to be on Pyrosphere and Sakurai's an absolutely despicable human being for dragging us through the mud only to shove our faces down into it in the end, going with the metaphor. You can say it's our fault for believing he's playable and that's true, but ambiguous wording was chosen by Sakurai and I believe he would deserve all the backlash of it. They KNOW Ridley's popular and a hot topic among the community. For him to not outright deconfirm him after the direct would be one of the cruelest things I've ever witnessed regarding a video game fanbase (if he's merely a stage boss), and we've already mucked through so much crap to this point. I don't believe Sakurai could be that cruel, but if it's the case, I'd have to follow others' footsteps in questioning Nintendo, Sakurai, Smash, and losing faith in all of them. I wouldn't even care about speculation for Smash 5, I'd just forget about getting hyped in general about any game coming out. Other M was the first mistake, and this game would be the second. For me to lose faith in Nintendo altogether, the next Metroid game would also have to be terrible.

However, I don't believe this is going to happen. With all the deliberate deconfirmations at this point, there's no reason Ridley would get this treatment unless he were playable.

Because no one who has never been on this site before can have possibly engaged in Smash Bros. speculation. Smashboards is clearly the ONLY place that has EVER existed where people would speculate about upcoming fighters.

Newsflash: Most of us have been speculating just as long. Heck, the Brawl release was built up in much the same way, and had much the same sort of hype and speculation attached to it. Your "seniority" means NOTHING.

I wish people would stop bringing up possible DLC argument as well, Sakurai clearly stated they had no current plans to release DLC for the games after launch, only thing I can come up with is a mental safety net, aka if Ridley isn't in the game on release he can still be added after, so there's still hope for them. I personally think if Ridley's ever going to be added to Smash 4 it will be on release or not at all.

While I acknowledge Sakurai's way of generating hype and quick deconfirmations, I have to wonder if he actually believes what he said about not wanting to make people speculate.

Even though his teases have had payoff so far, he is leaving people hanging onto doubt about not just Ridley, but other characters as well. Since the day the game was officially unveiled people have been wondering if the Ice Climbers are going to be cut because of the 3DS' hardware (the statement was actually about transformation characters but nobody cared to correct that), Im sure he knows everyone is wondering about them, yet the only thing we got so far is a glimpse of the polar bears.
Shortly after Little Mac was revealed, he posted in a potd a reference to Captain Rainbow, who has somewhat of a following over there. Unless CR becomes playable (which I really doubt even considering his japanese bias), Sakurai basically teased and hyped the fans over nothing.
With Charizard confirmed as a standalone character, what will become of Squirtle and Ivysaur? And what about the Trainer himself? This isnt something you cant get worked on, he literally showed 1/3rd of a Brawl character with no word of its remaining 2/3rds, people will speculate about this.
There is no need to go over Ridley's situation again, but yeah, 2-3 mentions of an apparent role but not enough information to stop speculation.

If he really doesn't like people to speculate because they may get sad, well, maybe he shouldn't give them reasons to speculate in the first place.

I wouldn't question Nintendo if Ridley wasn't playable. They've made my entire childhood and I still love the games they churn out. I'd question Sakurai and if, as ChronoBound is suggesting, Sakurai turns out to believe Ridley is too big... I would want someone to replace him for Smash 5, and not because Ridley didn't get in.

Ridley's a character in a game, and although I seriously do want him in and it does mean a lot to me regarding Smash Bros., I'm not going to blame Nintendo as a whole for it. Nintendo aren't bad, it'd be the developer.

Also, it may not be my place to say, but would it not be better to not get worked up over this seniority business? If you're going to argue, doing it with aggressiveness is literally the worst way you could do it. It just leads to more aggressiveness, which leads to worse and worse things.

Getting people worried that a character may be cut is not "hype". It's not something that gets their hopes up only to be dashed later. He has no problem with people wallowing in despair, only to be given a shiny GOLDEN SUN of hope.

I don't believe in anything being held off as DLC. That's not how Nintendo Nintendo's. If Ridley is not part of it, I'd be pissed to heaven and hell and also probably sideways, but I'd have no hope for DLC either.

I would feel very betrayed by both Sakurai and the Ridley supporters. I know there's the chance we're building the hype and not him, but I've put myself in a position to where I'd just be disappointed and destroyed if Ridley failed to make it again. The Ridley fanbase will be going on a 2014 death march; supporters being the marching jews, and the detractors being the Nazis sending them to their grave. Ridley will forever be the butt of Smash jokes, and the spirits who haven't been broken shall be after a few years of detractors...

I used to be a heavy detractor myself until I read aldelaro5's post. I did in fact deny it at first, as would any other detractor, but I decided to play "devil's advocite" and spread the word on Miiverse. I say I'd feel betrayed by the fanbase because I've put all my hope and faith in them, hoping their hard-earned evidence and confidence would not go for nothing. If it were to backfire...I wouldn't be able to handle it, and I could very well return to being a detractor to avoid the misery. :urg:

Agreed. I can see Nintendo adding a character later. I can't see them holding anything back.

DLC might happen, and I honestly wouldn't be against it, Nintendo always seems to do good DLC, FE Awakening! You can even get bundles of the DLC for a discount! Not like a certain OTHER company...I'M LOOKING AT YOU CAPCOM AND EA
Get the smash run dlc, classic mode dlc, the stock match dlc, the css dlc.

If you told someone right after the release of Brawl that Pac-Man, Mega-Man and Mii's would be in the next game they'd likely think you were stupid, there were even people who thought the same not that long ago, and look we have those characters now. So true anything can change and has.

and just a little rant about the playable boss idea..

I know this is going to sound like a broken record, and yes Nintendo could just be keeping the Wii U features under wraps to give more attention to the 3DS version, but there's no way Sakurai would give teasers about Ridley just for to reveal as some stupid boss gimmick, the amount of direct information/feedback about possible playable characters been de-confirmed is impossible to ignore now. And like people have said countless times, bosses like the Yellow Devil wouldn't work being controlled by a player, even if it was lacklustre.

So....in the event that Ridley isn't playable, you want Sakurai replaced, but not because Ridley isn't playable?

Kind of a poor attempt at trying to mask what you really want to say.

It is mostly unreliable. How useful it is depends on where they got the data. They could be WAY off, or just a little.
They are also scammers, charging people for their early made-up numbers.

Honestly, it just hurts. I have wanted Ridley playable for over 15 years. I became a part of the Smash Bros. community to support Ridley's inclusion back in 2001 after seeing his part in the Melee trailer.

I have watched Ridley's fanbase grow to become the largest of all potential newcomers.

Yet in the end, things may not matter any more than they were 15 years ago. 15 years ago, RIdley's role in Smash Bros. was in the background to a stage, and now 15 years later to the foreground.

In 1999, there was barely any Ridley support due to the fact that the Metroid series was in hiatus at that point. Support for Ridley really did not take off until 2001, with Ridley being shown fighting Samus at the E3 2001 unveil for Melee.

The massive Metroid resurrection (over seven games in 8 years) expanded Ridley's fanbase even more so.

Yet, with all the support, hype, and importance, Sakurai might still yet be a bonehead enough to think a non-playable role (or perhaps a gimped playable "boss" form relegated to a single stage) is enough to hype people.

We have only one more month of waiting. As I said years before, I have no intention of following Smash 5. The main reason I was even following Smash 4 was for Ridley and Mega Man (and to a lesser extent Little Mac) being added in.

I just hope my journey of 15 years will come to an amicable end in the coming weeks ahead.

I know if Ridley is shown to be a boss, that everyone in this thread will be disappointed, but just imagine how much more disappointing it will be for someone who has waited for 15 years, and seen this fanbase grow up from basically nothing to become the largest fanbase of them all, yet still accomplish nothing?

His Captain Rainbow tease is literally what Sakurai said he didn't want to do. He made a reference to a game without giving any specifics.

He meant because Sakurai would lie about false hype I guess
I don't buy that concept. Not one bit.

The whole "false hype" thing was overblown.
He was talking about things completely unrelated to Smash being used by fans to hype up something for Smash.
He never said anything about hyping something related to Smash that fans misinterpreted in a different direction.

I'm sorry, I'm calling bull on this. Sakurai looks to fan requests. He's not the only one. Nintendo is a big company, and they actually take their fans seriously. We know fan demand is at least considered. I'm sure there is someone at Nintendo who monitored the major Smash Bros. communities when the game was being conceptualized. We know Sakurai has been asked directly about it before. I'm sure Nintendo gets bombared with tweets about it. I can't believe that this fanbase could have gone unnoticed by Nintendo.

It's possible that Sakurai and the team couldn't find a way to make Ridley work. I'd believe that (though I don't believe that they would have gone this long without saying "he's unplayable" if that was the case). I think, in that case, he'd offer a condolence of some sort, similar to the way he did for Chrom (a character who was not hyped at all), and for the same reasons.

But they know this character has demand. If nothing else, they probably got hundreds, if not thousands of responses to the initial tease. Nintendo knows fans want him. They'd have said something. Regardless of how trollish, or how boneheaded, Sakurai may be.

We all know who is gonna be judged during Judgement Day. If Ridley isn't playable in the game I won't be in a rush to get the game. I have plenty of other games to waste time till the price drops or something better pops up. Metroid is my favorite series, and not seeing any new notable representation will just disappoint me and many others. It's like seeing the series die a little. Cpt. Falcon made a home within the Smash Bros Series... I don't want that to happen with the Metroid series.

Edit: That said I do hope for an F-Zero reboot.

as i said before, i'd be done.

there is no excuse... NO. EXCUSE. WHATSOEVER.

just... NOTHING... at all... could ever excuse them for teasing ridley for a year and he end up not being part of the roster.

as for DLC, i am as firm in my belief that DLC will NOT be a thing in smash bros as i am in my belief that ridley WILL be playable.

DLC is really ridiculous in this day and age... the only DLC that is really justified are full expansions, smaller content such as characters are understandable for indie developers, since they do have fewer resources and might get enough for extra stuff at a later date... but nintendo? with one of their most popular series?

i just cant see any justifiable reason to toss in extra characters through DLC for smash bros.

i really wish the whole DLC subject would just die, already... so tired of hearing about it at this point.

But they know this character has demand. If nothing else, they probably got hundreds, if not thousands of responses to the initial tease. Nintendo knows fans want him. They'd have said something. Regardless of how trollish, or how boneheaded, Sakurai may be.
Proof if anyone needed it that Nintendo listen to the community
