Has this ever happened to you;

You wanted to greet or say bye to someone with a quick fist pound, but they instead are going for a handshake. So then midway, you change to an open hand so that you can give them a handshake , but they changed to a fist too. And than you go through an awkward little dance of this happening like 2-3 times before your hands actually make contact. And you end up with someones hands grabbing the others fist?

Yea so this must have happened to me like 20 times yesterday.

It's kind of like when two people are walking towards eachother in eachother's way, and both of them feel the need to move out of the way in the same direction so they are still in each others way. So it looks like both people are doing some kind of dance move.

Iono, what other similar things have happened to you guys?

It's like brawl

two people try to reach each other.

they both react differntly

then after 2-3 times reading the person, they stop and rethink their approach.

when they run into someone else, rinse and repeat.

Yes but in life it's more complex.

And weirder.

Hah, what a bunch of noobs. shaking hands. whats REALLY embarrassing is when you expect a kiss while the other person wants a hug.

No one has ever offered me a fist in greeting. The only times I've ever been involved in a pound-it scenario (and believe me, they've been rare) have been in celebration or "props" or something. So I always knew it was coming.

Also, if I didn't know better (and I don't), I would think you'd stolen this from Demetri Martin.

I just made this thread, because it happened so much after playing tourney matches or meeting new smashers this weekend, that I actually noticed it.

Right here, not quite now
This is kind of like when you are about to encounter somebody you've talked to once or twice before. Should I say hi? Should I nod? Are we still strangers?

I hate this, except it happens with high fives. And it feels so awkward. I mean it's seriously awkward as hell.

Oh my god! Yes!

And I go to a predominantly African-American school (I'm White though), so they have different handshakes for their different...uhm...."groups". So I feel really stupid when I go for one and their hand contorts a different way than mine does.

never seen anyone who offered a pound switch to a hand-shake

the reason a lot of people pound is because they don't want your sweaty palm rubbing up against theirs, so there's no reason for them to switch over

lol yea I forgot about this. I used to always do a handshake a certain way, more like a high five but I don't know what to call it. And not to be stereotypical but whenever I would do it to someone white, they always just go for a regular handshake and our hands would end up weird and jumbled.

and then there are the people who do it right but wanna pound or do that wiggly wiggly wiggly thing afterwards, which I never wanna do.

never seen anyone who offered a pound switch to a hand-shake

generally it was me who offered the pound. But I flake too easily and switch to handshake when people generally switch to the pound... i guess that is why this happens to me alot.

edit: lol that video is pretty funny, and it was kinda what I was talkin about.

What usally happens to me is that someone will go for a highfive and I'll fail to process that the person wants to share a highfive with me. So for several seconds I'll just stare at them like there some kind of wierdo until either I DO relieze they want to highfive or until they tell me to highfive. Very, very awkward.

The "pound/shake conundrum" has also happened to me. Another fine example of an unfun experience.

This why people establish secret handshakes with eachother. Another solution is creating a common handshake between a group of friends. My entire bball team has a secret handshake called "the swan". It happened on accident when one kid was going for the handshake clasp and the other didnt know what to do so he made a swan shape with his hand. It looked ******** as hell but I coined the term and he's famous now.

I'm with you. Kiss-handshake confussion is even weirder because you're extending your hand, but the other person doesn't and is approaching for a kiss, then you both realize and switch, and then it's just a mess and you end up laughing stupidly (don't knowing the other person that much doesn't help either).

What I meant what that one person is going for the kiss, and the other for a handshake, not both. Handshake+kiss I find weird.

Like the only time I get fists is after I do something really sweet or something, most of the time it's handshakes (not like regular ones like the ones where your hand is in an arm wresting position if you understand what I'm talking about lol) so I'm always expecting it.

I've never had the hand-shake thing happen to me, but the situation in which you and another person are walking towards eachother is extremely annoying. It looks like some sort of sidestep dance. I've found that if you just stop dead in your tracks, then you never have to deal with it.

I'm gonna wreck it! (Fort Myers)
My school has like 17 handshakes and combinations of them sometimes including chest bumps, it's confusing. Regardless of it not being used, I always go for a standard handshake. It felt so wierd when I went to my first tourney and people actually shook my hand normally.

This thread talks about the tru****. Hate when this happens. I also hate when I'm about to walk into someone, then we start moving in the same direction and just keep blocking each other. I usually end up walking straight after the first move though, cause I learned if I kept moving we would probably end up in an infinite loop.

happens to me all the time in everything i do.

I always keep my hand in forward progress and try to read his mixup as i approach. If we cannot agree by the time my hand meets his, I just grab his wrist (or hand) and do the No-Homo Homie Hug.

Problem solved.

Kinda when you are approaching someone and you both move out of the way, in the same direction.
It is very awkward and time consuming.

Last semester I was hit by six bikes because they swerved in the same direction I dodged. (People ride bikes and walk, on the sidewalks in certain areas at my school)

Anyways, the answer is childishly simple:

Paper beats Rock. Just put your hand over theirs and say it and laugh at them.
