Your iPod can't compare to mine when it comes to being old and beat up. I have a first gen that can't utilize any current apps in the app store, it doesn't read 99% of .gifs and a large number of youtube videos, it has multiple virtual lines running across the screen, and it's full of physical dents and scratches.

It's what I did! I braved through the English dub. It's not bad! Although a serious word of advice:
When you get to season 2, do NOT watch episodes 2 through 8. You WILL regret it. Watch season 2 episode 1 then skip to 9 immediately.

Otherwise, watch however you like: sub or dub. Enjoy. I'm reading the light novels now. Legit.

Are subs an option though? Only few series like Gurren Lagann, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Samurai Champloo sound good dubbed.

Yes. Japanese voice/English subtitles are a choice for this. Many people get worked up about "poor english voices" but I personally have no beef. It's all your personal choice. Both do a good job honestly.

I can't watch any anime dubbed anymore. I thought Trigun had a legit Dub then I tried watching it again and it wasn't painful, but it wasn't as good.

Sothe I can provide PLENTY of examples where dubs are atrocious and ruin the mood/moment/context of a scene.

I wish. It might've made the Shana dub actually watchable. It's someone named Tabitha St. Germain. I tried watching the dub up until I heard that line, then I instantly closed the window and went back to subs. SO NOISY, JUST SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP.

Also, Haruhi dub is legit. I can go back and forth between the dub/sub and not mind it. I watched it first dubbed, because that was back when I didn't know dubs were generally bad. It was the first anime besides the DB series I ever watched. I watched the second season as it was being released though, so I watched that subbed. I didn't even know the dub of season 2 was out until Sothe just mentioned it, lol.

English Goku > Japanese Goku, but honestly I like the rest of the Japanese voices besides Gohan and Goten, because their both the same VA as Goku. I grew up on the dub though, so I'm just more used to it.
