I might be trying shrooms for the first time in the next month.

I'm definitely going to play smash. I feel like I could potentially be amazing on them! The power in a name.

EDIT: Idk if I can necessarily afford an Apex trip at this point. My computer is on that random blue screen status and I need one for school so I'm probably going to buy one really soon. Won't know if I can afford a trip to Apex yet.

John actually beat me to it. When we were driving him to the airport after Pound, we made a point to explicitly ask him if he'd ever done it. haha Shroomed is legit though.

John (on shrooms at Pound): Yo, anybody trying to money match for $20? What about you, man? You wanna do this?
Shroomed: Umm yeah sure. I'll do it.
John: Alright ****. Josh, who is the guy?
Me: This is Dejuan, his tag is Shroomed.
John: O_O

*John proceeds to take a game off Shroomed during their MM* wtff

-

Dejuan: If you actually do get to do it, you better come back into in NC thread and tell us how it goes.

Doc is sooooo fun. Uthrow -> Uair -> Fsmash is ****.

Also, Pikachu and Kirby. Favorite tertiaries to play right now. Kirby's Dtilt/Utilt are OP. lmao

Annnnnd I just noticed I'm the only non-Kevin player with 3 characters listed. I'm gonna try to play Marth more in tourney next period so I can list 4. haha Marth is way too much fun.

EDIT: Random, I just remembered when I saw Twitch at the last Gold Mine and he looked completely different than the last time I'd seen him. Adolescence hit that kid harder than his lost to JMH forever ago.

It's absolutely a good thing.

There are very frequently great catalysts in life that force change. They happen by necessity and often without much warning. Your rise in Melee required a transition from an introverted analyst (among other things) to a more extroverted leadership role with your understanding from before already internalized and applicable. People are one of the only things you can't really learn to deeply understand ONLY from "lab work" (also known as, "going into the lab" or a priori thinking). Your change required the introduction of WAY more different types of people than Shelby could provide.

EDIT - let me rephrase that -

Haha, How is Adam still in rank? Didn't he attend, like, one tournament?

Now I'm curious to know what goes into these.

He did attend one tournament. That's enough for a ranking period usually.

Edit: it's better to go to more because there's more data then, but Adam went to the big tourney so he lucked out.

That would explain why I've never been able to understand people in any situation. It never occurred to me that you wouldn't be able to understand them from lab work.

so much subjectivity within such an objective process
I guarantee you if Kevin posted the numbers for how and why these are the way they are you would realize there was no subjectivity whatsoever.
(pssst we already use a masked number system where PR placement is equivalent to a given value)

I am unwilling to get into this argument again this time around but after having talked to Kevin and Alex about exactly the manner this system works, I'm pretty sure the only bias being shown is by the non-panel who didn't actually sit down with the data. I won't say anything else about these other than congrats to Zach for making it and Chris for moving up!

i think its unrealistic and misleading to try to marginalize the subjectivity in this process when it fundamentally is a personal interpretation of data.

im not saying its a bad thing, but lets not try to convince ourselves that PR formulation is purely an exercise in number crunching when panelists are chosen specifically for the way they individually think

But . . . That's like someone skipping class the majority of the time, making it just for the final exam and passing with a 90.

Well, I'm sure it's more than just that, but that's the impression I'm getting.

Oh well.

Congrats to everyone, though.

There is no subjectivity in the process. I really wish people would realize this.

They literally are number crunching from tournament data. The only place I could even see them having to make judgment calls is how much to value OOS wins.

The panelists are chosen because they understand how our PR's work, not because of the way they think about it.

EDIT: Nunzio, imagine there is a class (NC Tournaments: Fall Ranking Period) you have to take that has 3 tests on the same subject but with different questions. Your final grade is determined by the average of however many tests you were present for (just for the sake of this example). The attendance policy requires that you attend at least 1/3 of the class periods.

One person goes to all 3 tests and gets straight 70's. His average is a 70.
Another person goes to take 1 test and gets a 95. His average is a 95.

Attending 3 tests means you have more chances to succeed but also more chances to do poorly.
Attending 1 tournament means that you can **** once and achieve your passing score, but you can also fail your one test and fail the class.

To continue this analogy, Adam got even luckier that the one "test" he took this period was the one with the most extra credit available (more other players to play).

Think about it: If Adam beat 5 ranked players to get second, he has more points (more valuable wins, more whatever you want to call it) than someone who went to all 3 and managed to collectively get 3 good wins and numerous bad losses.

loool at twitch playing doc. that kid is funny. i can't wait till he turns 13. he's gonna be a man one day.
:c

It's more about who you play that you wanna win/when you did win that is looked for honestly.

Edit: Twitch is playing tons of Doc and I do not know why. But I can't really complain because I have learned cool stuff about vs Doc and I have to beat the dark man that likes mushrooms at Apex hard so ah whatever lol.

Training continues tomorrow even harder!
because i can think with doc.

What happened to twitch playing yoshi?
i lost to stingers with him and that is embarrassment enough to never play him again.

Random, I just remembered when I saw Twitch at the last Gold Mine and he looked completely different than the last time I'd seen him. Adolescence hit that kid harder than his lost to JMH forever ago.
yeah except my brain doesn't want to grow with my body. :(
