Welcome to the Link boards video thread, where you can watch some of the greater and not so greater (?) moments that have been so graciously recorded via a capture device or camera, and then uploaded to Youtube. Stay a while, and discuss the videos that have been presented to you. Any and all videos of Link gameplay are accepted, and you can even stop by to have your fellow expert (cough) Links critique YOUR Link.

You do spotdodge a lot, which is fine since Link's spotdodge is pretty good. You only got gimped once during those matches which is very good for a Link main.

The only thing I think you did wrong was you used Boomerang around 1:52 of the first video. I've also noticed you don't use arrows at all, I think you might of used boomerang more than bombs.

Wish I could submit something, but my opponents are mostly horribad scrubs.

And trust me when I say they are beyond critiquing. There is no hope for them. =P

I may get some vids from an upcoming tourney (with far better opponents) but I highly doubt it.

Take down all those videos of me except the ones vs. Deva. I don't want you people getting the wrong idea of what Link matches should look like, those videos are old as hell.

Post just this match for now:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-OAdVA9YWE vs DoS' Marth.

And leave my Deva matches there.

If you people follow the correct example and show integrity as Link mains, I might help you people out.

Added. For videos that have been critiqued, I'll put them in a section and put handy links to posts that critiqued the video and are useful. Because of that, it'd be cool if people corrected bad advice and avoided giving advice they themselves are not sure of.

As for the lack of videos, excuse me for not updating frequently/not updating much when I do update. I've been busy for the summer and am now getting into the routine of procrastinating to check SWF, so expect way more videos.

Note; Date of future update is not the actual day of update. That's just the date I would like it to be done by. I make no sense.

I'm gonna add more videos today, but if you don't mind DDD, could you move the one vs TL down to the critic section.

I'd like to get advice on that and the ones I'm going to upload.

Wow, that was really good.

You took advantage of Norfair very easily and kept your spam game going good.

The only thing that worried me a bit was on Battlefield, you followed up Zair with DACUS, after you did it a second ago, and when R.O.B. went a bit to far.

It's minor but something I noticed.

Your spam game was good, you spaced well while using your jabs for keep away.

Your Link gets a thumbs up from me.

Good Link, Ryu covered most everything I noticed. I can't really tell if the ROB is good or not though, he seemed on a lower level then you in terms of predicting, punishing, spacing, and overall, using the right moves at the right times. I'd really think it'd be interesting to see you play some better people.

It's mostly praise, but I hope it helped. At least a little.

Overall, a very nice Link.

Here are the notes I took:
Replace some of your QDAs with DACUSs.
Excellent Bomb Teching and mind games.
Add more QDA/DACUS follow-ups out of zZair.
Add more grab>release>follow-ups (my usual is Grab>pummel>ground release>Dsmash; it works wonders, and you can pummel with the C-stick)
Add more Dtilt, Dsmash and Utilt.
Change up your third jab a little more, especially with Dsmash and Up+B.
I LOVED 1:38 and 2:20 in Video 3

Well, you know your combos well Scabe and you know your bombs by heart. When you use a bomb, it is always setting something up for you.

Don't shoot arrows on the ground (unless it is an AC). Even if you are stalling for that bomb to explode. Its just not worth it.
I'm interested to see how you did in this tourney against higher-tiered characters. Bring back as many matches as you can, good and bad.

I like how you applied the techs to your game.
Bomb techs were the ones that caught my eye.
Didn't see a lot of up close game, then again you played smart by not approaching when your opponent had trouble with your camping.

Did you shoot an arrow backwards at :40 during Friendly #1 at Mariodestination?

Hey everybody. I just switched from Marth (in part due to this tournament because my Link faired much better than my marth..just look at the ***-kicking the opponent I played against in the upcoming vid gave him...yikes...on second thought, don't look at that vid)

Anyway, here is my link vid. I am still quite new to the character, and haven't learned an AT besides the Z-Air ledge grab. I figure its pointless to try and learn AT's when I am still getting the basics down. Better to have a sound foundation, ya know? The opponent featured ended up winning the tournament, and is a **** good Snake player.

First off, go for controller port 4. Always go for controller port 4. It affects Snake's gameplay a lot, and its hugely beneficial to Link to NOT let Snake get controller port 4.

The official SBR rules say that in the case of an argument over ports, you and the opponent can rock-paper-scissors over it. Use this to your advantage.

You did pretty well for having little experience against good snake's like that one. Don't be afraid of the grenades. You held your shield down for seconds at a time waiting for a grenade to explode, and sometimes it didn't even hit your shield.
The Snake was pretty much working off of the expectation that you were afraid of his grenades. So against this particular snake, if he starts his grenade shenanigans again, walk two steps away from the grenade, charge an arrow and fire to punish him. This strategy wouldn't work against most snakes, but against this one it will work the first few times and will make him take you more seriously.
Snake has a much better close-range game then Link does (grabbing controller port 4 from him actually hurts his close-range game). If he approaches, use retreating zairs and start spamming him.

Also, under the SBR ruleset you are allowed to ban one stage. Ban BattleField, because that is Snake's best stage against Link.

Otherwise, good job. I look forward to seeing more of you around here.

Oh I know about banning lol. I wasn't aware that it was the worst stage for the Link/Snake matchup though. But in all honesty, I am very comfortable on BF. Call it run off from playing Marth. Thanks for the advice man, it is greatly appreciated.

Any more advice from the resident Links? The more advice the better

Hey.

I've been to only couple of tourneys and need a few pointers and critiques, if that's possible. I've always been Link (N64) and I just think he's the most fun player to use. I do play competitively but also I just love the game.

During the video there's an intro, and right after are my matches. One versus Shiek/Zelda and the second versus Falco.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUPbfevmcEs&feature=channel_page

Any pointers?

Thanks.

Alright Just Jo.

I could tell you were mentally struggling with that first match. You couldn't quite keep up with the opponent and so you reverted to spamming your smashes as "get off me" moves.

Your main issue is that you need to learn to make your own tempo. If that Sheik or Falco is pressuring you, and you can't seem to think straight, get away from him and take some time to think. Just spam some projectiles so you can keep him away while you calm down and think up a strategy to fight your opponent.
If you don't do that, you'll revert to smash spamming, every time. And, just like in these matches, you'll begin whiffing UpBs and other laggy attacks that present juicy openings for the opponents, every time.
Make some time for yourself during your matches so that you can recollect yourself and come in ready to swing again. Link's projectiles and zair do a good job of giving you this time.

A good strategy for getting into this is just jab 1 > cancel > run away. Your opponent is messing with you, and you aren't keeping up, so just do that one move to interrupt his rythm and then get away where you can take a breather.

And don't get intimidated by the whole tourney experience either. A lot of those times where you blew yourself up were simply you being nervous and accidentally hitting down, so don't stress about it ("it" being both the tourney experience and the mistake). Clear your head, focus on whatever you have coming up before you, and focus on your love of just playing.

You can take off the link's to my matches on the OP since they've already been critiqued. Thank you very much guys. :)

I know I said I'd get some tourney matches recorded but I never got the chance to, with no hacked Wii's and forgetting to put it on my SD card. :urg:

But, I do have some offline matches that was recorded awhile ago. I've improved quite a bit from then, but I just thought I'd like to show you how I play offline since the ones I posted were all online :urg:

Also, maybe if a match has been critiqued by someone, perhaps you could put a link to the post that it was done on, and maybe a tick or something just to let people know that it's been critiqued.

Rate/Critique my Link. Offline friendlies played on 24th of September.

Alright, From what I could tell from both videos, you roll into the opponent a bit too much. DK could have Dsmashed when you did and very well could have killed you, or close to it. Your Zair spacing is good.

Speaking of Zair or rather grabbing in the vid vs Kirby every one of your deaths were from the ending lag of a missed grab. In the DK vid you were nailing them better, in this one you were missing a bit more when Kirby spot dodged or was just outside of your range.

Those are my 2 cents.

Yay for critique-ness.

I've been getting out of the habit of rolling now and learning the whole Jump cancelled item throw really helps me move away (instead of rolling away) and being able to throw the bomb back at them.

Also, sometimes those grabs come out when I screw up DACUS (or whatever it's called now).

I'll try get some new ones soon so you can see the improvement.

But anyways your 2 cents is much appreciated. :bee:

New Tourney vid

All right, guys. Thanks to DarkMusician, I have another video of my Link at a tourney.

I get spanked by G&W, but I feel improved and a bit more relax. I still lose it after the pressure gets to me, which sucks , but I'm getting better at keeping my cool and playing like I do with my normal friends.

There are 2 rounds. One in Smashville and one in FD. If you can, please critque. :p

Well, gotta say that was one hell of a match.

If you're beating/matching Legan, then I think there isn't much to critique on. Still. In the end, I noticed you started getting ***** by Gale's. It nearly always put you in a bad position, allowing Legan to follow up with an arrow, a bomb, fsmash, whatever. That's what allowed Legan to rack up your damage so fast on the last stock IMO, as well as the probable excitement of playing an amazing match like that and nearly beating him.

Also, dair/using dair to DI put you in a few bad positions.

And pulse, all of these matches have Link in them. :/

Epic link ditto. YEAH, epic as hell, watch it, and rate us please!
Thx :D
I think timing might be part of the problem. When you tried to Ftilt in the beginning of the vid you did it too early when Link was much higher than you were. Another time at the end you tried to hop up and Dair him when he was still falling down from the bomb that hit him.

When you tried to gimp him you kind of messed up and almost killed yourself when you were falling back to Bair him for a stage spike. Just watch your distance on how far you fall. If he Zhogged correctly he could have gimped you.

The technical side your all good. Dtilt spike, SH fair on the stage, and a few other things.

Hey.

I've been to only couple of tourneys and need a few pointers and critiques, if that's possible. I've always been Link (N64) and I just think he's the most fun player to use. I do play competitively but also I just love the game.

Ok I think the best way to describe what went wrong was what I call, "Walking into the ****."

First match, first kill was from you misplacing Dair, second kill you walked into his Fair this one I'm not really faulting you for since he mind gamed by turning around again in the air. The third you landed right in front of him to eat a Fsmash.

Second Match first kill you hopped over his head trying to bair him to eat a Dsmash. Second kill you misplaced Dair and got Fsmashed. Last kill you fell a bit to far and I'm guessing lost your second jump to a sausage.

Each of these has a common trend from what I can see. You walked into his kill moves or he saw what you were doing and capitalized on your mistake. Death by Dair could have been solved by moves towards Mr. G&W instead of falling right in front of him. I think this is just a reaction thing. Try paying closer attention to what your opponent is doing and how to react accordingly.

This isn't just applicable to your death's but also to how you played, when G&W rolled a few times you either didn't punish it or used a move that isn't a good punisher.

On the positive side, you Link is nice on the technical side. Glide tosses, momentum canceling correctly, there are a few things you can do correctly that I'm not even perfect at. This is a plus, keep doing these things.

I think Legan was sandbagging until his last life, no offense. He just played differently compared to his first two he was being more safe and using better options

Your Link is good, Bomb stool to Dair was used twice with many hilarious comments. You like to use Boomerang on the ground a lot. Try SHing the boomerangs some more to mix up how you throw the rang and to keep you moving. I think you were trying to be a bit too flashy, you were doing a lot of things that look cool in a combo video but weren't safe. I know you pulled off Bombstool to Dair twice but a few other times you tried some other fancy things like bomb to dair on the last life or the Boomerang to DACUS, if you mess some of these up it can leave yourself very open in which Case Legan punished you for these things.

It just felt like you were trying to be really fancy with Link rather than using his core mechanics.

On the second life you Utilted Legan when he was a t low %, you could have fit in another Utilt or two at this point. It's useful vs Heavy opponents to rang up some damage. I think you were trying to Zair a few times but accidentally did a grounded grab. My advice is just to try and avoid doing this more often, Legan punish you a couple of times when you did this.

All in all, your Link is solid. Probably better than my Link to be honest.

Wow good stuff Red Ryu!

I think it's time I start critiquing some vids starting from now. ;)

I know it's sounds a bit mean but I think I'll choose to critique those that stick around these boards just because I don't want my critiquing to go to waste. :urg:

^If that's the general attitude, and since I know what Scabe is saying is true (not many people stick around), then should I keep videos like that separate from the normal critique videos? Yeah, I think I will. There are quite a few videos up for critique that haven't been...well, critiqued.

New psuedo-rule: Try to critique a video up for critique (if there are any) before you ask for critique yourself. Not really needed since it should be manners. But if you don't, I'm not going to attack you.
