Thanks for the list!

I already knew Cynic and IWABO, lol. Cynic is absolutely orgasmic, and I barely missed out on seeing IWABO live. Twice. :(

Isn't Cynic's new album coming out this year? It feels like it's been forever since Traced In Air, since Retraced, while good, doesn't really count.

:phone:
IWABO is great live. I saw them opening for some ****ty band a few years ago, before their first full-length album came out. I came mostly just to see IWABO because I had just heard their self titled EP and was in love with the vocalist and didn't even bother to stay for the headliner.

Krysta's harsh vocals are absolutely ridiculous. She blows most dudes out of the water. Hearing the recordings, I assumed she was singing through some sort of distortion pedal at times but nope. She sounded pretty much the exact same live, and the only FX she had was a delay for her clean singing. Very impressive and hot :3

Well, so, I kinda like a lot of metal; be it black, death, doom, power, heavy, thrash, avant garde or what not. Maybe I'm a bit out of place here, since I never found any metalcore bands I enjoyed listening to, but still there seems to be quite a few people who enjoy more classical metal bands, so I thought I might list some of the stuff I enjoy =)

avant-garde Metal:
Arcturus - probably no need to introduce them, but if you enjoy avant garde stuff (or think you might enjoy) and don't know them, a good example of there sound would be Radical Cut of the Sham Mirrors Album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pK1Os14rVg

Thy Catafalque - maybe a tad bit less known, but especially Neath waters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY08AFfzJKk) is a fine piece of art near musical perfection. (The rest of their stuff is amazing, that track is simply on a new level of music).

Akphaezya - french band, which is sadly even less known. They are producing one of the most interesting, genre-blending sounds ever; or could you name another band using Death metal, Jazz and oriental influences in the same song, where still nothing sounds out of place, and no transition feels forced? (Chrystallis from their only release: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GgkrOp9Xwo though you might want to give the whole album a listen, since the songs are pretty unique =) )

Black metal:
Ulver - Well Ulver... I don't know of many bands that completly changed their musical genre twice (folk metal -> black metal -> ambient electronic stuff) , but I guess they could start produzing Jazz tomorrow and it would be amazing (: So, here we got their black metal release. Some might object to the quality of the record, but hey, it's one of the most uncompromising black metal albums out there, what did you expect? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9IJLostR0k)

Noenum - Hailing from Finland we got Noenum, a band which i would dare to guess no more then a five digit number of people world wide know of, which is really a pity (despite of course, the less people know it, the more TRVE KVLT it is ). Their ability to create that haunting, melanchonic athmosphere that many of those underground black metal bands fail to achieve is most amazing. Vocals here are one of my most favourite in the scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWcFYiRWgFw)

Wolves in the Throne Room - Do I have to say anything about them? I highly doubt it, but Crystal Ammunition (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-5jxRN70Ro) stands as one the best black metal songs ever created.

Power metal:
Manticora - even if you usually would dismiss power metal as generic, never-changing music with singers, who had their balls removed, you should give Manticora a listen. Not caring at all for the well-worn paths of power metal, they create their own sound, which is loved by pretty much everyone who ever came across these guys from Denmark. Some people might need to give them another listen, since their music is not easily acessible to most, but once you understand them, you'll probably love them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06TmD8Q85ZU is from their most straight forward album, but still... :)

Storm Warrior - A lot more generic, but fun, straight forward power metal. If you don't expect genre expanding works of art, but just something you can furiously bang you head to, you can still enjoy them a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ml921S2aO0

Rhapsody (of Fire) - and a again a genre classic, but the EPICNESS of their records is so much fun, I just had to mention them (last time I checked I owned over ten hours of Rhapsody and the solo projects of one of their guitarrists (Luca Turilli) as physical CD releases *yay* :D)

Well, so much for now, perhaps I'll write some more another time =)

I love you for listing Ulver. I was actually just about to try out Arcturus, a friend of mine told me that they're a bit like Shade Empire, which I love.

Ulver is the only band I've ever decided to see on their tour with a new album (april 1st 2011, right here in munich yay!), without listening to the record first, and yup, War of Roses was so beautiful again, I actually forgot I was at a concert at times.

Sadly, when Garm announced they were going to play sth from the Nattens madrigal album next, he was only playing an aprils fool on us :( Though, I guess, most people in the hall weren't too unhappy about that^^

Oh, yeah, if you need further motivation to check out Arcturus: you'll recognice the Vocalist, and the guy on the drums is no other then the legendary Hellhammer himself. What could possibly go wrong? =)

Yep.
Its because all of the fans like Kezia the most. If they thought people would buy Kezia again, I'm sure they'd play it. Fortress is waaaay more technical and heavy, though, so they play that for the fans who are more into metal.
With scurrilous I guess that they wanted to expand into progressive metal much more.
I'm jealous, though.

Rody is half comedian apparently. They sound much different live too.
I saw a quote of Rody saying "I saw the lead singer of coheed and cambria. I think he thinks I'm a **********, all because I turned to him and asked if I could suck his ****."
Wow, it sensors that WHOLE ENTIRE PHRASE?
EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzf6VgRECpE
If you ignore the drums and pay attention to the vocalist, you will **** yourself.

I've seen PTH live twice and they were great both times. He's really funny yeah, he took this girls phone and started talking to some person one time. And I saw a shirt he had, it's hilarious. It had 'The Road' at the top with an arrow going to his face, and then, 'The Choad' at the bottom with an arrow going down lol. I definitely agree with Wretched about their set, 4 songs from each is a great idea.

And that Carnifex video is pretty insane. Saw them live too but their set was like... yeah 15:00 minutes.

Mediocre lineup for Mayhemfest. Although, I don't give a **** about how commercial In Flames and SS are, I like their sound and I would like it regardless of how other people viewed it. All Shall Perish feels good to me too.

Palpi, if you go to Map of Metal, you can find the drone metal section, which has stuff that I'd classify as both extreme metal and drone music. I like the atmosphere too :D

I might be starting a one man band project, too. I can't play any instruments, but a drum machine and other instrument machines might work.
Any recommendations on what I should do? I have the vocal part covered. I have metal vocals down to the grit.

If you can't play anything, I would suggest you try to do some sort of subgenre that doesn't try to mimic actual guitars. Synthesized guitars are all rubbish.

Or, you could learn to play an instrument! it is fun.

I need suggestions for a band name, anyone? I want it to let people know it is metal, but not make it as ******ty as most band names are.

you should define a more precise subgenre.

No power metal band would call themself "Kvlt ov Satan" (ok, no self respecting black metal band would do so, neither. At least I hope so :D)

aaaand, while we are at it, some more of my favourite Bands:

Death metal:
Edge of Sanity, mostly their Crimson Album is really amazing. Highly progressive Death metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRfXfB28c94

Immolation, just brutal. Not in a "we have to play >300 bpm all the time, and if the drummer is playing anything but blast beats, he is doing it wrong"-way, though. I suggest you take a listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6LXlV1bWNo and decide for yourself, how it's achieved. I can't tell :)

Obituary, another band that is (was) not afraid to play at a slower pace from time to time, should've probably included something else then, but both Obituary and Immolation are so much fun to listen to. Stick with their older Obituary stuff though. Their newer releases are pretty abysmal in comparision.

Faceless is great. Everyone who's ever been in the band is a total beast. though, I like their first album a LOT more than Planetary Duality. I'm very excited to see what they are up to this year. My favorite song is probably Leica.
