I asked Dr.pP this QueStIOn a while ago and Got his response.
You ever felt like other characters you use apart from your main helps your performance with your main? If so please share your knowledge.

For example, I'm a fox main but shiek helps me with my gimping play style.

I typically play Marth, but I like to mess around with ganondorf. My time as Marth really helps the edgeguarding aspects of gameplay, while Ganon definitely improved my wavelanding platforming dropping shenanigans. Playing Ganon also taught me to make the most out of every hit I get.

I don't feel you are learning anything because of the character change, but more because of the changed expectations of what you need to do.

If it takes playing Sheik for a bit to force yourself to go for gimps, then so be it, but I think it is the change in expectations which in turn changes where you focus.

Maybe you won't necessariy play better, but letting other characters influence your play may make you do "weird" stuff that your opponent wouldn't expect.
Ask anyone who's played my Falco after years of maining Luigi =).

^Are you just trying to advertise some kony thing by making a nonsensical post? I was a mod on another forum and I I hated **** like that. I'm not even going to bother clicking your sig for the obvious plug regardless of the possibility of a good message.

Edit: above post was deleted

I find it funnier when you think of his posts in the voice of guru from DBZA. Just how he pauses randomly but always gets louder and louder until he's yelling the last few words of his sentence.

I think that playing other characters helps you to understand how to beat them sometimes, but other than that I think that maining Puff for a period in time helped my reads.

at a low level playing other characters can help you learn tech skill. luigi for wavedashing, bowser or link for l cancelling, etc.

Not always true since for instance playing like sheik that fast may just not work for you.

Or playing peach, since her aerial and grounded mobility is way worse.

I'll agree that it does help alot when you try to play at a certain pace. Very few characters can help you play at such a fast pace.

eh, that is true, I personally found that it didnt make all my characters better, mostly because of the thought process. As a Fox main I find my reaction timing and just straight up thinking process and improved.

I do agree with what you're saying though

I didn't start getting better at ALL until I switched from Falco to Link. I feel like I forced myself to start paying attention to what my opponent was doing.

I'm a gannon/marth main but i love playing a diverse group of characters. I can play Falcon to practice combos for my gannon. Falco/fox help with tech skill. The rest just give me chances to try new things and practice tech skill with different characters.

hey sinji! Not sure if you remember me from apex, purple samus, just poppin in to say wassup.

We all incorporate different styles in to our main, and one way that happens is through playing other characters. This happens if we are aware of it or not. How much do you want to bet people started tech chasing more liberally as a result of playing falcon.

However, getting used to different characters will not gain you any more control with the one you will need when it matters. If you play Fox and decide to work on your tech chasing, doing it with Fox will probably benefit you more than doing it with Falcon, so long as you force yourself to play to learn rather than to play to win.

I somewhat dislike when people start talking about playing to learn instead of playing to win. I suppose above isn't wrong as such, I just don't think it is even necessary to use that line. Like, cut off "so long as you force yourself to play to learn rather than to win" and the post would still say the exact same thing - you can practice your techcasing with fox just fine.

Playing to learn isn't even the opposite of playing to win like many people seem to think (and start goofing around in friendlies and use the "I don't play to win in friendlies" - my theory is, because they DO care about the outcome of friendlies, they purposely invalidate them entirely). When you experiment with stuff and go outside of your comfort zone, it doesn't mean you aren't or shouldn't be trying to win anymore.

You can ignore me, the phrase just bothers me and I think it's obvious that you should focus more on improving when playing friendlies. Though maybe it isn't since i've previously been asked why I do certain things and fail in friendlies (and still get those questions sometimes), but I always wrote that off as trolling (i'm so fortunate to be the player that "sucks" in my country...)

I attended Apex for the experience and exposure. I went to learn different styles and everything. Everyone plays to win, its just that most people atleast try to take something away from their sets with pros so that they can learn from their mistakes.

Hmm let's see... I play Samus. Playing Falco helped me learn to SHFFL, Falcon helped me tech-chase, Luigi helped me wavedash and waveland, and Fox helped me JC Usmash.

Playing Fox really helped me improve my overall performance with Peach, mostly the movement aspect. At least, that's what my friends said. But I do feel as though I've been preforming better in friendlies, working on the stress of the actual tournament though :p

pretty sure JC up smash is a thoroughly useless technique
90% of my upsmashes are JC'd, and I play Luigi.
Upsmash out of shield is a JC'd upsmash.
Upsmash out of a dash is a JC'd upsmash.
(Upsmash out of shine is a JC'd upsmash.)

Actually, doing a non-JC'd upsmash is pretty difficult (unless you use C-stick, which I don't). You'll always press up slightly before before pressing A. Of course, if you're just standing it doesn't make a difference...

Used to play Peach some, and was terrible with turnips. Only concentrated on float stuff. Then after I mained Young Link for so long, when I tried Peach again, I suddenly knew how to use turnips. so... yeah.

If my falco gets into a slump or too far into autopilot mode then I play puff and marth for a bit. When I make the switch back it always makes for more creative combos and gameplay all around.

playing a lot of characters gave me a good feel for matchups, and strengths/weaknesses of each character

true story, i can get short hops between 13-20 consistently with Fox. i actually just practice short hopping as many times as i can in a row a lot with Fox.

after a month of that, when I went back to falco, i could short hop with perfect consistency. like, 100 short hops in a row was no problem, i when my muscles would usually mess up at around 40-60 before.

fox is a great measuring stick if you don't want to use him as a real character.

I main Yoshi, but I mess around with Puff, Falco and Marth. I feel like they all help me in different ways, as well as doing more interesting tactics. Whenever I play Yoshi too much I always end up doing the same things, its good to not rely upon my Yoshi tactics that are almost gimmicky, and have the spacing of a Marth or the off-the-edge wierdness like a puff. Falco simply makes me react faster.

I dont have many people to play against in my region so I've tried/trying to learn every character so that way I have some sort of knowledge if I ever need to get into a situation where its needed
