Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Developer: Level 5
Publisher: Square-Enix
Platform: PlayStation 2
Genre: RPG
ESRB: Teen
MSRP: $49.99
Release Date: 11/22/05 (US)

An evil magician, a demonic scepter, a cursed princess and king, a cursed kingdom, and a lone and silent hero who remains mysteriously untouched by the darkness (and of course a quarky gutter mouthed sidekick along for the ride). These are all the ingredients given to you when you begin Dragon Quest VIII. Half the fun of this game is learning the "hows" and "whys" that all of these characters' destinies became intertwined. The further you travel along your quest, the longer the journey to uncover the past becomes.

The gameplay is pretty standard as far as RPGs go. Walk around town inquiring NPCs to find out clues on what to do next. Use keys, maps, and treasure chests in dungeons. Smash pots to find money and treasures! The battle system is also standard: a turn based system where you control the actions of each your party members; Attack, Abilities, Items, Magic, Defend, Flee (and Tension). All the basic traits. There are Skill Points the characters learn when they level up, and you can place these skill points in weapon categories (Sword, Spear, Axe, Club, Bow, Whip, Boomerang, Staff/Magic, Fists) to level up the character's strength of the weapon and/or learn new weapon Abilities. Each of the four characters (the silent Hero, the kindly yet rude mouthed bandit Yangus, the tomboy-ish short tempered mage Jessica, and the charming "bad boy-ish" monk Angelo) have their own stat with unique skills that fit their personalities: the Hero's "courage" stat (allows the hero to learn abilities every party leader should have such as dungeon evacuation, and the ability to teleport to previously visited cities); Yangus' "humanity" (where he'll sacrifice his MP or HP for his comrades); Jessica's "sex appeal" (that can paralyze and confuse your enemy); and Angelo's "charisma" (which can weaken and lower enemy stats). The Tension attack is a way for a character to charge either their attack or magic (offensive). Your tension level rises to 5, then 20, then 50, and if you are lucky, 100 (and the character's appearance will change), but most of the time if you try to charge to 100 tension it will not succeed. Raising your character's tension will also raise the character's defense, agility, and evasion stats as well, but once you perform an action other than "tension" the tension level will return to 0. The higher the Tension the more exponential it's effects, for example if a normal attack does 80 damage, at 100 tension the attack will do +1000 damage (also if you receive 80 damage from an enemy attack at 100 tension you may only receive 4 damage). However be cautious, most boss enemies (when you'll most likely use Tension) have abilities that will cancel tension (you may be at 50 tension and a boss casts a spell that returns tension to 0, that's 3 turns wasted)!

The gameplay may be basic and standard with it's few quarks, but the story is where this game really shines. The tale gets deeper and deeper the more you play, each character playing a more epic role in the grand storyline. Dhoulmagus, a power hungry mage steals the Rapthrone Staff and places a curse on Castle Trode as well as it's king (turning him into a troll) and princess (turning her into a horse) there is but one survivor in the entire kingdom from the curse, our hero, but how - out of the entire kingdom - was he the only one untouched? As Dhoulmagus rains down destruction over the land other members join your party to strike down this evil, each member holding an unknown link to our hero and Dhoulmagus alike.

All of the characters were designed by Akira "dragonball" Toriyama himself, and many of the enemies, no matter how deadly, all are very cute! Sure it's horrible when a Falcone paralyzes your entire party, but it's very cute. Also the battles are not so cut and dry. Sometimes if you are really weak an enemy may cure you, or an enemy may do an attack that causes you to raise your Tension! You never know what to expect from battles (my fav random gag is a monster may "hear it's mother calling" and flees from battle!, or a monster may try to attack but it's weapon is so clumsy it trips and falls and misses). Funny stuff (but the same can happen to any of our heroes as well!)

The soundtrack is full orchestra. It adds to the epic feel of the game and - for lack of a better description - makes the game feel very "Disney-ish" (sound wise). The voice actors are great (about 50% of the text, i.e. NPC dialogue) is voiced, all the actors have strong European accents ranging from British, French, Italian, and Russian adding to the variety of already colorful characters.

A great game with tons to do and lots to see and hear and find out (just completing the main quest will take +50 hours). A great buy for any RPG lover.

I was thinking of getting this game, but when I saw the characters, I felt like they were cookie-cutter characters. Is this true? I really hate games when they have predictable characters and backgrounds....

With the exception of the Hero and Angelo (or "Dante-Trunks" as my friends jokingly call him), the characters start out pretty basic (fighting evil for vengeance or for justice or what have you). The Hero's back story remains a mystery right up until the very end of the story (or so I assume, I've reached the last dungeon so I'm building my stats and item inventory and still no explanation on why during key battles he cannot be cursed or effected by darkness; where did he come from, what are his origins, I still don't know!!). Also Angelo's back story keeps getting more and more interesting as the game plays out, especially his relationship with his estranged and bitter half brother Marcello. Yangus seems to be in the game mainly as a sidekick/comic relief for the voiceless hero (very "Link"-ish) and Jessica is basically in for revenge (like the King and Princess). The origins of Rapthorne's staff and the story of how the seven sages (along with the godbird Emperia) sealed his darkness is a very archetypal (read: your basic good versus evil story) but still a great and epic tale. Beside the game itself is just plain fun. The characters are funny and cute, the story is classic, the music is epic, and the gameplay - although not innovative or unique - is very polished and straightforward. There's lots of good time and laughs and a few touching moments peppered throughout. A solid RPG.

Also for anyone who has made it this far: who else LOVED Marcello's
acceptance speech as High Priest on Neos island?
Very moving. He's like a (more) spiteful (yet still pure) version of Lord of the Rings Ferimir.
Yes, he did force his way into power with some underhanded means to get there (including fraud and even murder), but I did not get the sense that he would abuse his power, rather use it to revolutionize the world for the better. I hope he appears again before the end of the game,
Marcelleo is such a complex but "real" character. Not 100% pure hearted, but not a blackhearted as well, just unloved and misunderstood. Easily my fav character next to Yangus (c'mon he's a riot) and maybe Red (gotta love her "rough and tough" European accent).

Dragon Quest VIII

I`m queite impressed with the game ,they have very loveable graphics as in it isnt very impressive and out of the top like Resident Evil 4 and you gotta remember that the PS2 is pretty limited compared to the xbox and gamecube but the graphics are decent and the art is made by my all time favorite artist the very populair Akira Toriyama w00t.

The gameplay is pretty good and I just had to play it after hearing all the fuss made about it by gaming sites and also magazines, did you know that there was a rule made in Japan that no DRagon Quest game could be released on any day except Saturday and Sunday because kids would ditch school to get in line to buy the game.......anyway back to the gameplay.......its pretty adictive! I started getting obsessed for a moment just to level up and the enemies arent stupid.......wel okay some of them are but I like that frog with the dragon on his back and the fox knight aint bad either.

Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen at the Tower of Mirrors

"'Since 1986 the Dragon Quest series has gained acceptance around the world, and has been a staple of the videogame industry,' said Yuu Miyake, executive producer for Square Enix. 'We believe its appeal lies in simplicity that anyone can enjoy, and the excitement of becoming a hero in an epic adventure. With the Nintendo Wii, we believe that these aspects of the Dragon Quest experience can be taken to a whole new level of fun and interaction.'

Square Enix was happy to announce key players to the newest Dragon Quest game as well. The sceneario and game design is being done by Yuji Horii, a key player in previous Dragon Quest titles. In addition, character design is being headed by Akira Toriyama, also responsible for previous Dragon Quest work. In addition, RPG fans will also battle to the familiar sound of Koichi Sugiyama, yet another master of his craft. Even if you aren't familiar with the cast, we can easily sum it up for you: Dragon Quest for Wii has key players in their most prized positions.

In addition to the official announcement, Square Enix also gave us a look at a brief trailer for the game. While it was mostly live action, showing a person running through a forest with Wii controller in hand, they were soon attacked by a television screen showing what appeared to be a huge brick golem. The player quickly attacked it, and dropped the monster to the ground.

Little else is known about the game, though we can tell you the battles seem to consist of first person presentation, with the player literally acting as the hero of the story. As a side note, there are rumors that Dragon Quest for Wii is a game that has been adapted from another console, including the possibility of either a Cube upgrade or, bizarre as it seems, a plug-n-play device.

 What exactly are you trying to say? Well, anyway, I am so looking forward to this game. I'm a DQMonsters fan, though, and I am gonna miss not having the breeding mode (good thing DQM is coming out for DS).

There's a trailer for it? I only saw the 5-second clip of the golem...

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (ドラゴンクエストモンスターズ ジョーカー) is a Nintendo DS role playing game published by Square Enix, and is the latest installment of the Dragon Quest Monsters series. Square Enix released the game on December 28, 2006 in Japan, and on November 6th, 2007 for Northern America.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is the first game in the Dragon Quest Monsters series to be in 3D, and the first game developed by TOSE in 3D. It uses the Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King game engine out of battle. It has cel-shaded animation, similar to those of Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2. The graphics in the battles are the same style as Dragon Quest VIII: issue commands in a turn based style, then watch them be executed in full 3D.

The battle system itself is very similar to previous Dragon Quest Monsters games. You have up to three monsters in your party, you can issue them direct orders or set them to one of 4 AI settings. Your main character does not directly participate in battles except for using items when told to do so.

Joker does not have random battles. The only way to encounter enemies is to run into one on the overworld. The monsters can be seen, avoided, and attacked from their back to get a free attack round.

This is the first game in the series to have online play, via Nintendo Wi-Fi.

Once again, the character and monster designs are credited to long-time Dragon Quest series artist, Akira Toriyama.

Anyone get/getting this? I got it after school today, played it for a couple hours. It brings back memories.. sigh. Also, theres alot of new elements added to the game, and in my opinion, the Dragon Quest Monsters series is better than the Pokemon video game series.

Yeah, equipping your monsters adds a whole new level of customization.

Btw WIS = Wisdom (for magic users, kind of like INT in other games)

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Wow, I picked this game up about 1.5 weeks ago, and it really is a truly fun game! It might be because I am a fan of Pokemon, and it is similar to that, but it also has distinct characteristics that make it really intriguing! Does anyone else have this game? I really enjoy it!

Currently, I just finished Madame Rummy's Island, and I've started on the creepy Infern Island!!!

Dragon Quest X

Today, Square-Enix held a small press conference focused on the company's ongoing blockbuster franchise, Dragon Quest. Of chief concern was the almost-here Dragon Quest IX for the DS (which is now going for the absurd price of abour 60USD in Japan), but before that got started, and during the opening comments made by Yuji Hori (the creator of the series)...

...the man told the World:

Yuji Hori said:
We're developing Dragon Quest X on the Wii.
Nothing else is known at this point. Release date, price, multiplayer options, etc. All we know is that the next installment in one of--if not the--most popular RPGs of all time is coming to Nintendo's home console.

Source
Original Source - Warning! Japanese

+++++++++++++++

And since it's news too, this event also finally gave us a release date (well, a Japanese release date) for Dragon Quest IX. The game goes on sale in Japan on March 28, 2009. It will be sold for 5,980Y, or approximately 64.75USD.

Note that the price everywhere but Japan will probably be the usual $40. They can pull that kind of gouging in Japan for obvious reasons, but not over here.

Is this not the best news ever!?

This is a megaton indeed. Is this the start of the Wii becoming the JRPG console? Sure looks like it. Next thing you know you get Kingdom Hearts 3 on the Wii.

Yeah really. Besides that nebulous Crystal Chronicles game (not Echoes of Time--the other one that looks like Skies of Arcadia), keep in mind that the Wii is also getting the next main Tales of game, and then, while it's not actually an RPG, Monster Hunter 3 is...

...well, it's Monster Hunter 3. I still think Square is waiting to see how their FFXIII cross-platform thing goes before dedicating Kingdom Hearts III to that same path, or sticking with the PS2-era graphics and proven quality on Wii.

You beat me to it...

I'm a big DQ fan, so I'm definitely excited about this.
Heh, I was actually pretty lucky catching this when I did. I was just about to leave for an early morning shift when I popped into GAF real quick and saw a thread on this.

I'm just glad those stupid rumors about Square porting DQIX to Wii weren't true. Sure, this is still like, two years off...but d*mn.

That's the one. Crystal Bearers. Really, they oughta' be wrapping up development right about now, after showing off that rather full-featured trailer way back in...early '07, I believe. Then again, this is the same company that's been leading us on about FFXIII for over three years now.

So anyways. Back to X.

Obviously this is a big deal...for Japan. DQ games have never really done too well in the USA though. However, this is the Wii we're talking about here. Dragon Quest originally gained so much popularity by getting people together and talking about it, which is kind of a trademark of the Wii, if you think about it.

So if they finagle it right, Square might finally get everyone else onboard the DQ Gravy Train with this puppy.

DQ really is underrated outside of Japan. It's really sad.
What's even more sad is that us three might be the only Dragon Quest community on SWF.

Anyways, I'm quite surprised that they announced DQ X before releasing IX. I don't know how long it'll take, but I'm going to get it just like the other DQ games. I wonder if they'll let us create our character like in IX or if they'll try another multiplayer experience again.

It would be interesting to see a Dragon Quest MMO one day...

It's weird until you think about it.

They announced FFXIII before FFXII was released. They announced X and XI before IX came out, too. A few people theorize that they announced it so early because S-E stock has apparently been getting lower and lower as this year has gone on, so maybe...

It would be interesting to see a Dragon Quest MMO one day...
Ugh. God no.

Maybe a Dragon Quest Monsters MMO...but the main games are and should always be a single-player* experience. Even Square reckognizes that to an extent: originally, DQIX was billed as a real-time action RPG, not a traditional turn-based one. But now...it's back to turn-based. Square delayed the game so they could make it true to the previous games.

And while the multiplayer is a fun feature...honestly I don't think I'll be using it that often. It's WiFi multiplayer (I haven't been keeping up with the game honestly, so if it's local wireless-only, then forgive me), so I don't relish the thought of playing a game like DQ with random people online. Nobody else I know in real life plays the games, so I'd be out of luck there, too.

I'm all for customizable characters...but the multiplayer always seemed a little uneccessary to me.

As for the MMO comment I made, I would NOT want it as part of the main series.

Since Horii wanted to change DQ just a bit, I was hoping he would make a spinoff with his new ideas to see how everything turns out, that's all. It's the only way for him to express new ideas without being ridiculed.

So yeah, making a numbered DQ game an MMO would be a terrible idea.

That's something I fully support (not that that means much).

But the thing is...look who we're talking about. This is the same company that made their premier franchise's eleventh entry into a sub-par MMO. The same company that produces sequels to it's premier franchise on cell phones. The same company that made X-2. Blargh.

Funny thing is, I don't play MMOs at all. I'm just curious as to how Yuji Horii would pull it off.

You need to play Monster Hunter. Games are awesome, since they have all the immediate fun of an action game, combined with the social traits of an MMO.

Anyway, remember like, two posts ago when I hoped that DQX would really open up the series in the US?

Apparently Nintendo agrees with me. :bee:

Satoru Iwata said:
With the release of Dragon Quest IX, there are two things I'd like to make reality. The first is to build a thriving Japanese game market together with Dragon Quest that rivals the West's. The second is to form a strong tag team to promote Dragon Quest overseas. At Nintendo, we were able to popularize the Brain Age series overseas, which was said to be unmarketable. I want to increase the number of people worldwide that understand the appeal of Dragon Quest, which represents all Japanese gaming culture...even if that only turns out to be a single person. I'm looking forward to working together with Mr. Horii and Square Enix.
And source!

I'm totally into Dragon Quest (well at least into DQ VIII that was on PS2 that is)

I'm not sure, but I think there's a Dragon Quest title on Wii already (besides this one or DS version) am I right?

The one that hospitalized alot of people who played it? Yea that one.
If Square is smart they know to release it on a saturday. don't want people skipping school and work and get only PS3 fanboys in class. Actually i want to see that happen.

I would be so amazingly happy if something like that ever happened in America. I think it's actually a law in Japan that new Dragon Quest games can't be released on school days, or days before school days (which is usually Saturday, excepting holidays) to prevent massive skipping of classes.

We're just not cool enough of a country to get a law like that passed. :urg:

@OmegaKoopa: Yeah, there is. It's Dragon Quest Swords: Subtitle I Don't Remember. It was a...decent game, but a little on the short side, and pretty shallow. If they had expanded the magic selection and given you more than few basic moves, it would've been much better.

This is marvelous news! :bee: We haven't had a Dragon Quest game on a Nintendo console since VI, not to mention a console Dragon Quest game in America since Dragon Quest/Warrior IV for the NES! I'll be definitely looking forward to the day it gets brought here.

It really seems like a return to form, doesn't it? :chuckle:

...Still, in a comparative view it's not all that of a surprise. Dragon Quest has always been made on the system with the highest install base, which in this generation is obviously Wii and DS. It's great that we're getting back our baby, but it was only gone for two (numbered) games, y'know.

I'd be much more fulfilled to see the next numbered FF game on a Nintendo console, rather than a bunch of spin-off titles (no matter hoe good those games can be).

No, not really. I played both of them, but didn't really like either. VII just took forever to get going, and the characters were rather boring (even by DQ standards). VIII...was okay, but I found the super-British voices to be really disconcerting, and all the loading times and bland overworld didn't help. The cel-shading was amazing, and I hope DQX looks similar...but otherwise the game was blah.
