Retro ones. Though don't they also suprise characters? And I don't think we got something close to a joke character apart from them, if you don't count Wii Fit Trainer or Pichu but they aren't exactly in the same boat.

Baby Mario's crying. It's the more annoying of the two.

Ten new Pokéball Pokémon. Honestly, I've always thought that Pokéballs make more sense than Assist Trophies.

I mean, Ganondorf already uses dark magic and swords won't make him interesting at this point, so Toon Link.

If the other is gonna be a costume, then I'd say regular Toad. We can have different colored Toads as alt skins and Captain Toad as another skin, a la Alph or Skyward Sword Link. Plus we get other source material such as SMB2 and SM3DW that way.
