TECH CHASING vs Marth

So I usually practice tech chasing against fox since that's basically the entire matchup right there, but recently one of my friends has been playing marth, so naturally i tried to apply what i learned from tech chasing fox to the marth matchup...

Which means this is the first time i've been made so forcefully aware of how EXTREMELY LONG AND FAST marth's tech-roll is. It seriously goes like halfway across final destination, jesus christ.

Compared to fox who you can literally tech chase all directions by pure reflex, are there any good options to block off multiple tech directions against marth? I don't like to just take guesses and randomly knee spots, I gotta be efficient about that **** and hit at least 2 of his tech options with SOMETHING.

Side-b and downsmash don't go far enough to hit 2 directions (HIS TECH GOES SO FAR JESUS CHRIST), so all i've come up with atm is just kneeing his landing spot then immediately grabbing at one of his 2 techroll areas. If i try to do the 2nd part by pure reflex (eg. i miss the knee and try to grab him out of his techroll by reflexes alone), I'm usually too slow. Can anyone actually do that consistently? It's pretty solid against fox but marth techs so far etc etc

Am I putting too much thought into this? Is tech chasing against marth a lost cause? Do you even need tech chasing to beat him? Talk about it here!
..please lol

why dont you just wd back a little bit and wait to see what he does.

or instead of kneeing in the spot try stomping him and then go for the grab, or a nair at his away tech roll

Aren't falco and shiek's techrolls shorter than marth's? It doesn't seem to me like they'd be any harder to chase, but i don't know for sure

but yeah if i wd backwards and he techs away, I don't think i'd be able to get there by reflex unless he was against the edge, but if you have experience with this and say that it's possible then i guess i just need to train my reflexes

why is it never falco?
poor falco

it is NEVER him

EDIT: Another thing i want to complain about is marth's wake-up attack move. Seriously, what the hell? It has so much range. One funny thing i've figured out though is that you can actually dash to one side, then to the other as he's doing it and dodge both of the hits that way. It looks hilarious but I don't know if it's a really applicable option compared to just shielding.

just stand, shield, if he flubs knee if you miss that then shield for get up attack, if he techs in place grab if he techs away wd out grab if he techs back jump oos bair covers all options if youre frame perfect at these reactions then its 100% reliable you gotta be literally frame perfect though start practicing son

tech chasing against marth is lost cause, cuz if the marth is smart he nos u he can fair, nair, bair side b, before he hits the ground getting rid of the possible tech case. WHAT you can do is, at 0% to like 15% u can downthrow chain grab then switch to up throw at 15% u can then nair out of that, if the marth panics and d.is towards u then u get a free 0-death combo, assuming u no how to finsh it of course. oh p.s u gotta beable to read the d.i on the marth from the up throw to catch him wit the nair, i also think u can down throw nair. it might be more effective. but if u really wana force the tech case u can downthrow dair at around 50%, it forces him on the ground also if hes D.Iing away u can already assume where hes gona go,

hope that helped

yeah it's true that the situations where you're actually able to tech chase marth are pretty limited compared to fast fallers, but it does randomly happen sometimes, especially if you use a lot of D-airs and occasionally catch them when they're jumping. I always feel so useless when those situations occur though :(

No FACE!!!! my falcon is still pretty noob but what I do is just not give them the opportunity to tech. Once I grab I keep it up following DI with aerials and stuff till he's off the stage to edge guard or if he DI's like a noob i finish my combo with a knee.

Like at 0% I try to be patience until i can get a grab. Then its usually 2 Dthrows then Uthrow Uair or nair. Mostly Uair cuz i like it, then I regrab and Uair combo untill either they're off the stage from DI'ing away from my Uairs or a knee from DI'ing towards me which leads to death, or I mess up and get wrecked =( but usually if they do tech, I just run to them they usually Dodge because they think im gonna grab. then I just wait for a split second then grab them raaaaaaaaaaaape

yeah this is pretty smart, I guess tech chasing just isn't a big part of this matchup. I do understand that it's really important to try to stay underneath marth compared to above him, anyway

i'm still going to practice dash dancing around his wakeup attack though, it looks too sexy lmao

what you are experiencing is actually marth's DI. it seems he rolls much farther because you have to run so far to make up for his DI.

though you shouldnt tech chase marth like fox. no falcon even tech chases fox for %, they usually do it to set up a predictable tech and start a combo. with marth, you can combo straight from grab from 0%. vs marth is more about predicting DI and spacing.

edit:: if you need a combo at 0%, try uthrow to nair regrab. or uthrow uair regrab. mostly just mess around until you know what you can do out of each move.

well yours is pretty much correct, it just falls into the irrelevant category because none of it works at low % if the marth DI's away, in which case you generally are gonna want to tech chase them. if marths arent DIing away from your dthrows, by all means do those combos, and really a lot of marths will DI wrong, even up to higher levels of play.

unfortunately, i do generally tech chase marth by guessing something and throwing a stomp or knee there, which you said you dont like to do. if you do a quick dash to where he lands, you can probably follow some techs with a regrab, and forward b will work to cut off multiple options sometimes. the good news is that tech chasing marth is not nearly as important as tech chasing fastfallers because you can combo off throws after 30%.

trick time: throw marths onto platforms and tech chase them there, a lot of times theyll tech the way they wanted to DI, and they cant tech as far as normal cause they stop moving at the end of the platform

ok

ok

how about this

you throw marth onto a platform

jump

waveland

DOWNSMASH

..

...probably too slow :(

ok, ok new plan

you throw marth onto a platform

DOUBLE jump really fast so you don't go too high and waste precious frames

stomp where he lands

grab him if he techs lefts or right

3 out of 4!! but is it still too slow? i will have to attempt it next time i play

of course i guess there is always the option of just waiting under the platform and u/b-airing him after he rolls, but the maneuvers posted above are a lot cooler IMO

So far on every stage with playforms that i've played on with platforms, or at least all the neutral stages anyways, you can do a shorthop a knee. Thats what I always do either that or they'll shield and i'll do an up B just to piss them off lol

wow that's even more stylish than what i posted

but yeah i can get the short hop knee to work on most neutral stages except for battlefield and dream land, although sometimes it does randomly work on battlefield but i think it depends on what part of their bouncing animation they're in and what character they are

it works on battlefield if you space it right, like they need to be out near the end of the knee

that all can kind of work, heres some max style for you that ive never actually done but wanted to do for like 2 years

on yoshis story you can fulljump backflip and you perfect land on the top plat (i think on fod too but i dont play there so w/e), so you can throw/stomp someone up there and backflip up and it will be fast enough to allow all sorts of possibilities. all ive done is regrab, but **** could get quite nasty

you dont need to do the backflip jump, normal forward jump does the same.

ss just does it cuz hes sexy.

up is always sexy too but if you can land on a platform while their on the platform but on the ground

a well timed raptor boost should **** everything no?

If they time the get up attack correctly also it will outprioritize it.

well i know you can time raptor boost so that it blocks off 3 options as they're falling:

1# fall down without teching

2# tech in place

3# tech away

You have to have some sexy timing though, and even if you do, it pops #1 up really weird so that they aren't actually in their hitstun and can jump out, i'm sure you've all seen this happen on occasion

still though, 3 out of 4 is not bad but the positioning and timing are kind of hard to set up
