Well, some merchandise, a new orchestra album, and some new news on the next anime season, so I'm sure it's cool for fans in Japan but not that mind blowing or relevant to Western ones. For a panel that was marketed as a must-watch for series fans, it sure seems like they just want to sell us the three games we’ve played over and over again...

Ah well, it was probably just PR talk, but I was really hoping they’d finally announce AA7.

I would be very surprised if Ace Attorney 7 is not in active development. Dual Destinies released in 2013, while Spirit of Justice released in 2016, so a three year development cycle with Ace Attorney 7 releasing late 2019 sounds about right to me. I wouldn't give up hope on Phoenix Wright in Smash yet. The fact alone that more people will have access to the original trilogy is nothing but a good thing for us, as it creates more exposure for the Ace Attorney series. I doubt Phoenix would be included in the main game of Ultimate at this point, but with the trilogy giving Ace Attorney more exposure and the potential reveal of Ace Attorney 7 later in the year, 2019 could end up becoming an important year for Phoenix. Capitalizing on the trilogy and new game with Phoenix being in Smash as a DLC fighter would be a brilliant marketing move on Capcom's part. I really hope Phoenix is in Smash at all, but he and Dixie Kong will be getting all my support from here on out.

Phoenix Wright in UMvC3

Phoenix's UMvC3 moveset is a very faithful representation of his court cases. You start with evidence collection, present evidence to the opponent, and then achieve turnabout (with accompanying godly music) and proceed to break down the witness into a submission. Basically, phoenix starts off as a low tier getting whooped by the prosecutor for the majority of the case and he turns it around at the last second and becomes god tier, very much like his actual court cases.

While very faithful there were several reasons why I thought it wasn't too enjoyable. For one the playstyle is slow and you often didn't achieve turnabout. Another is that even when you did, the opponent could sometimes just camp phoenix out until it runs out, so you don't get the reward of achieving turnabout.

Phoenix Wright in Smash

Turnabout mode is still the best part of his UMvC3 moveset and I think that needs to be preserved in some way in his smash moveset. So the idea is to let him keep his trump card move in his arsenal while straying away from his low tier achieving top tier gimmick which a lot of people didn't like too much.

Here's my idea: Turnabout will not be a mode he can unlock but rather it will be a KO move like little mac's ko punch except that it triggers a short cinematic like his lvl 3 super in UMvC3. Basically he has a built in Final smash in his moveset. However it will be difficult to land and you will probably only see it used every now and then.

To activate turnabout you must land 3 successful objections on an opponent for it to activate. The objection will be a counter and if you whiff the counter you will incur a penalty from the judge which will take the form of self-damage (8%). And If you get 5 penalties you will be insta-KO'd. These penalties will not carry over to the next stock, so if you have 4 penalties, you could just not use objection for the rest of the stock. I think this will make the move pretty balanced because there is risk to go with it's high reward and also since you have to counter someone three times, you are unlikely to land it on someone and kill them at a low percent.

Going multi-platform, so many more people are willing to finally give the series a try! It'll be great for the series, hopefully reflect in sales and build confidence in localizing things and the series in general, and yeah, that'll definitely help Smash chances!

Oh I definitely agree. I am disappointed that we didn't get AA7 news or a crazy reveal for smash at TGS, but I am still excited to get more eyes on the series. It's one of my favorites and many people maybe missing out, even if it doesn't ultimately get him in. I'm planning on picking up the trilogy remake (again) just because I want the series to succeed (and the HD touchups do look great)

I was kind of hoping for like...123 port, 456 port, and 7 like they discussed months ago, and all that hype would get people playing and all, but this is okay for now I guess, all the different platforms are awesome... and hey, 456 and 7 are still on the way! Probably! Guess we just gatta give it some more time...

But no worries, Phoenix is still in. It's really amazing that he could beat a well known and popular character like Rayman. Now there are only 10 characters left in the bracket and Phoenix is among them! Who knows, maybe he placed really high in the official Smash Ballot too. I am glad this thread now is so much more active than months ago.

At this rate, I'm almost certain that as far as Capcom newcomers go, he had the most support during the ballot back in the day.

I know fan polls are not the ballot but Phoenix consistently places high on every fan poll I've seen. I have no doubt he placed higher on the official ballot than most "popular" choices. The fandom was big back then, especially since Dual Destinies had really introduced a whole new generation of fans to the series. I remember him being pretty high on casual fans' lists too.

Ahh well! It was a fun run, the characters he was up against have had supporters since...well, as long as I can remember, and they love their characters too, so congrats to them! Nice to see Nick get this far, I think he's placed in the Top 10, right? As far as I can tell, out of aaaaall these characters, he's only behind Geno, Banjo, Sora, Isaac, Skull Kid, and Lloyd? Him and Paper Mario were eliminated in the same round, not sure if that counts as a tie, but Phoenix beat Paper Mario head-on, earlier sooo... SO yeah!! A really, really great run, I'd say!

This poll is just for fun and only getting a handful of votes, and I wonder if we took it more seriously than other fans, but it still seems nice that he did this good! My feelings, detailed in the "Rate their chances" thread, have been for a while that Phoenix has everything he needs... maybe the popularity is lacking, but even then, he's pretty popular! The only thing "in the way" is more deserving characters like King K Rool!

But I feel like...this game is thankfully using the ballot and making dreams come true and I'm super happy for Ridley, King K Rool, and Simon fans! Dark Samus, Daisy, all that too! I think the big ones that deserve the next spots and make most sense, make the most dreams come true...are Geno, Isaac, Skull Kid, and Bandana Dee. Then Banjo if there's time, but maybe DLC... Sora is also a big want but he's owned entirely by Disney, but if anyone can do it it's Sakurai buuut it's a whole thiiing, ANYWAY! My point is... After all those deserving and loved characters..............it really does feel like Phoenix is next in line...? Right?? I dunno! I don't have a Maya color cause I'd want her to get special treatment, I imagine her as part of the entrance animation, final smash, victory animations, stuff like that, whereas Edgeworth would have different victory animations and just remove her from his final smash, he's more of a lone wolf after all, would wanna keep some of that angsty smugness from his first appearance, give him the air of his modern-day friend style, but also the autopsy-updating rival haha

I suspected it, but the absence of the hat really threw me off. Now that I think about it, if we can have Hobo Phoenix as an alt, Edgeworth in his dad’s trenchcoat and hat could also work, right?

I was thinking of giving him the glasses at least but then I figured, for this, I should just work under the idea that textures could be modified a bit, but I wouldn't add anything that required new assets! I just didn't wanna be greedy, but hey, if we're fantasizing and having fun here, yeah,

I'd vote Hobo Phoenix as our one alt for Phoenix (as the modern look isn't that different and Feenie is awesome but already shown off in UMvC3 and Dual Destinies)

That ain't too shabby! I keep thinking, there are very important characters like Geno and Banjo who should go first, but after the 5 or 6 characters I have in mind... Well Phoenix really feels next in line! Depending on how much DLC they wanna do, Ultimate could really be the one, he might not be too far away! I would really love to see the official ballot results in the final Smash direct, whenever Ultimate drops or in a direct similar to the one where Bayo was revealed! I wonder how well our guy did after all, and the male/female differences, the differences by country, and who won! I bet King K Rool won overall!

I do find it interesting that Phoenix ranked above all other capcom reps. I always thought he made the most sense as the next capcom newcommer (well, aside from Ken) considering ace attorney's connection to nintendo consoles. Sure monster hunter also has this plus popularity, but I feel it doesn't have a defined/recognisable character, with the exeption of Rathalos.
That being said fan polls should be taken with a grain of salt.
