Mind you, I won't be mad because of KOS-MOS herself, but I expect people to immediately jump on Reimubusa and give Milk-Bosatu more undeserved attention. As in, that's all people will talk about until E3 2020. Just like Erdrick and the Steve/Banjo wars.

That is not going to be a fun ride...
Nah, i'm not gonna be mad anymore. But seriously, that was painful to hear for me, and i know KOS-MOS for the Project X Zone Series...

Vergeben states that a bunch of characters, including Phoenix Wright, are out of the running for Fighter 5. He also said that, when attempting to inquire about KOS-MOS, he ended up with a "not sure" answer... despite the fact that he previous said that Bandai Namco is entirely out of the picture!

He attempts to explain this by saying the rights to KOS-MOS are different from other Bandai Namco characters, and that Monolith Soft share partial rights to the character. That may or may not be true... but KOS-MOS has appeared in or been referenced by games that Monolith Soft had nothing to do with, specifically Soulcalibur III (a costume based on her can be unlocked), Tales of Hearts (a Tales Of game where KOS-MOS is a support character), and Tales of Vesperia (a DLC costume for the character Judith).

Not to mention, this was previously stated in a testimony by Arctiq...

... as the witness has stated, if the source of insider information for Vergeben stated that they know exactly who Fighter 5 is, why would they respond with a "not sure"? They would know for sure whether or not KOS-MOS was Fighter 5! This can only mean one thing...

SOMEONE IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET!
Feel free to ignore this entire spiel if you want. I just saw it as an excuse to "object" to Vergeben's post, Ace Attorney style.

Mr. Wright...while you present a compelling argument as to why Mrs. Kos-Mos might not be fighter 5, this doesn't change anything regarding your supposed disconfirmation, which is the main concern of this courtroom. I'm afraid I'll have to penalize you.

Now quit bluffing and get at it.

I got no idea where I was going with this.

Kinda off-topic, but as a Layton fan I am curious to see the thoughts of this thread as a Layton fan:

Did you play the crossover game between Layton and Ace Attorney? If so how did you find it?
Depite the flaws of the game, and making Nick look like a dork, I loved it.

Eh, considering how long it took us to get it, I was pretty disappointed with it. I think the only AA I like less than it is SoJ, and I'd say it's a pretty low tier PL game too, but my opinions on that franchise are kinda similar to AA, where I find most of the post OG trilogy stuff to be a considerable downgrade (well, in Laytons case, all of them). I really couldn't stand the multiple witnesses on the stand gimmick.
that final moment where Espella suffers some sort of breakdown from her childhood memory can suck it honestly, her whole character really.

Yeah it was great, much better than I expected. Unpopular opinion: I also enjoyed the ending quite a lot. Animations were awesome, characters likeable & fresh and the music godlike <3

I still feel like something is odd. Why bothering putting Resident Evil Spirits in Smash, if we're getting a Namco character?

Uhh... So KOS-MOS is the big character we're talking about now? Kinda disappointing. I know nothing about KOS-MOS at all. If we really do get a Namco rep, I was hoping it would be Heihachi instead, but oh well...

I know nothing about KOS-MOS either.

Doh I believe that would make him even funnier to play with, since maybe her Smash presence could make me get interested on Xenosaga and Namco would release Switch ports of those titles.

It is one of those picks which could expand my videogame tastes (as Joker and Terry were), and I love those kinds of picks.

I don't think the RE spirits ever guaranteed fighter 5 would be Capcom, but I don't get how verge can say no Namco and then doubt on Kos-Mos (which I'd always consider low on the Namco probability list given that Xenosaga is deader than dead). Like...if Rex/Pyra/whoever couldn't make it due to scheduling issues, I don't think a random blade drop as a new Xeno rep would leave fans of the blade games all that satisfied.

I haven't played the crossover yet. Not a big Layton fan. I tried the Curious Village but the puzzles disconnecting me from the story bored me in the end (Pls, don't kill me).

Also I'm one of those people that likes DD and SoJ more than JFA, JFA feels carried by its last case. Which is amazing, but everything else feels like the weakest Takumi has ever been IMO, while the other ones feel more consistent, yet they never reach the greatness of Takumi's highest spots. From what I have read, PWvsPL doesn't reach that bright spot either.
I'm currently playing DGS and I would also put it above JFA for its 1st and 2nd cases at least.

What do you mean? I mean, it's not like RE is owned by Namco.
Probably implying that Smash team went to talk to Capcom for something. Maybe a playable fighter *wink* *wink*

As someone who loves Xenosaga and whose best friend has has KOS-MOS as her most wanted since the early 2000s, this sudden upswing in support and perceived likelihood is the ****ing weirdest thing. The epitome of bandwagon support. Obviously I'd be incredibly excited if she got in (preferably using her classic designs) but...it doesn't make a lot of sense. Xenosaga has great music, tons of spirit potential, and amazing and memorable locations. It also has an awesome sci-fi aesthetic unlike anything else we have in Smash. And yet, it's still super weird that she's the character people are jumping towards.

As for the RE spirits, I'm gonna guess that post-pass we're gonna get some Capcom characters. Hopefully Phoenix, though Dante is definitely a big possibility as well. Plus if Heihachi's Mii costume doesn't return with KOS-MOS I'd bet he's post-pass as well.

It is very possible Capcom were only visited for spirits. That is what happened to Ubisoft, after all.

Sad but true. The positive side, even if that is true, is that even if they're just working with Capcom for Spirits at the moment, they're still working with Capcom quite closely, which potentially bodes well post-pass.

E: Also, it looks like there are screenshots of someone preparing that second "cat image" leak with Reimu and Hayabusa, complete with appropriate time-stamps and everything. I don't know how much of that might be forged, but it's out there.

Honestly, if it is Namco after all, my money’s fully on Heihachi, especially if Sabi’s claim for no Lloyd is to be believed.

I think it’s really sus that Heihachi’s Mii costume wasn’t added back yet. You could say the same about multiple others, including Lloyd, but Heihachi had the perfect opportunity to return in the Terry update. They re-added the Virtua Fighter costumes then, as they’re fighting game characters, but didn’t re-add Heihachi, despite his costume being released in the same Wii U/3DS update as them originally.

When Terry was revealed, one of my first thoughts was “Oh, I guess this is when they’ll add back the three fighting game Mii costumes,” but they just didn’t for Heihachi.

It’s very possible they’re holding his and Lloyd’s costumes back to be added alongside a totally different Namco-Bandai character, but idk.

About the RE spirits, was there anything going on with the franchise at the time to get a spirits event in particular? That's the one thing about their addition that confuses me.

The ports, I think. Some major RE ports all dropped simultaneously and they've been pushed by Nintendo this year (which is partly why people thought they were maybe getting a Smash rep).

All I have to say is, if a bunch of ports being pushed all year don't do anything for your chances of getting into Smash... Dante might not be so unshakable.

If Nick doesn't make it as FP5.
I can see 2020 being an endless battle between Phoenix and Dante's chances. With Joe, Ammy and Morrigan laughing in the background (Inb4 one of them gets picked instead) and Resident Evil rolling on its grave.

It was posted on October 1st.
Hooh, more than 1 month before the announcement, that's actually impressive. It has more credibility than being lucky or getting the info from people very few days before the announcement.

I wouldn't be mad if it was Dante but I think Phoenix is more unique of a character pick than Dante. Especially since we already have a character that comes from a game where endlessly combo enemies with a different array of weapons and skills.
I'll say that devil arms are more integral to DMC than weapons from Bayonetta, given that they're actually tied to the games plot somewhat, and he also has junk like styles and the DT to set him apart from :ultbayonetta1:. But Phoenix would definitely be unlike anything else in Smash roster.
I don't really mind who of the two gets in as they both have their unique pros, as long as it's one of them I'll be happy (or I guess the very very odd chance Amaterasu gets in over either of them), if it could be both it'd be all the better, but what can you do.

Hell yeah I played it. I loved it. I think I found out about it randomly. I wasnt activly looking for it and YT gave me a video announcing the localization of it and me being a Layton fan, had to have it and it was the first time I touched AA toi

I love both the AA and Layton series, though AA most of all, and I actually loved the crossover game. Even the entire ending sequence. Beautiful world, a fun crossover, a crazy ending, memorable characters I wish could come back...big fan overall. It also made me remember how much I love Maya. I had forgotten how good she was. Time away from a character combined with having to deal with a very annoying section of the fanbase for almost ten years will do that to you.

I've loved every AA game I've played (which is all of them except DGS) to varying degress except SOJ, and even SOJ had one of my favorite cases in the series.

So tomorrow, we're getting an Indie Direct...

... I bring this up, not because I think we're getting a Smash announcement here (we're obviously not, even if Fighter 5 is an indie character), but because I'm curious: don't Indie Directs usually come about a week before a general or game-focused Direct? We may not get anything at the Game Awards, but we still likely won't have to wait long until Fighter 5 is revealed.

I wouldn't be mad if it was Dante but I think Phoenix is more unique of a character pick than Dante. Especially since we already have a character that comes from a game where endlessly combo enemies with a different array of weapons and skills.
In a perfect world, both Dante and Phoenix Wright would be in Smash... and even though we don't live in a perfect world, there's still a chance we could get both by the end of Ultimate's DLC cycle.

I imagine Phoenix's victory theme would be a remix of this:

In my opinion? Best Ace Attorney on the 3DS. Sure it had problems, but I feel Phoenix and Maya feel completely consistent with their original portrayals and they bounced off Layton and Luke really well to me.

On the topic of victory themes, I feel like they might take the :ultmegaman: route and use a snippet of Cornered (2001), ending with the orchestra hits that play at the beginning of the variation of that theme.

As for the Layton/Ace Attorney game, it sorta flew under my radar, so I have no current opinion on it. Never played a Layton game or seen much of the crossover, heard mixed opinions on it. Might have to give it a try some day.

They should put the pachinko remix of the Steel samurai theme in smash, because it's way too good of a remix to be confined to a pachinko machine.

I remember seeing the original Japanese reveal trailer for Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, and even though I wasn't familiar with Professor Layton at all at the time, I was still excited at the prospect of Phoenix Wright getting a crossover game.

By the way, if anyone knows where I can find a version of this trailer with english subtitles, please tell me...

Then a year went by without the game getting released in the states... and it ended up falling off my radar. I still haven't played it yet to this day, though I'm more than willing to give it a try if it gets ported to the Switch or PC.

If/when Phoenix Wright gets in, I hope that Professor Layton follows shortly after. It would be awesome if the Layton/Ace Attorney crossover could get a second life in Smash (the same way Capcom vs. SNK was sorta revived by Terry getting in).

Thank you for introducing me to the pachinko ost. I've listened to a few songs and they sound pretty good.

Now that we're talking about Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, is this crossover canon in either game series?

Sadly not, though it does fit pretty nicely into the timelines of both and it's a fun thing to experience. I like to imagine that they're in the same universe still.

Oh ok, I might give the game a go when I finish Spirits of Justice.
