I've been a Smash Bros. fan since the original came out day one.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and with Brawl sucking pretty badly. (it doesn't really suck just compared to Melee it does.)

I absolutely loved Melee and have so many good memories from it, but with Brawl?
Not so much..

What would you think of a sequel to Melee?

And you know this because you've actually played it?

And no, you can't really expect any game to feel exactly like its predecessor. If it did, where's the point of making a sequel?
A sequel with a few fresh ideas and some tweaks may even be better.

Yeah, I have actually played it. It still doesn't feel quite like Melee o_O

Also I'm pretty sure Project M is trying to recreate the Melee feel as much as possible. I mean, it's called Project M for a reason haha

They're adding things but I think they want the pace to feel like Melee did, but there's something a little bit off with how it feels. That being said, if somehow Project M becomes the next competitive Smash Bros game, I would be much happier giving it a try than Brawl xD

The "feeling off" aspect is landing detection, everyone at this point should know this by now if you know what Project M is.

Well I didn't really care why it felt off <_< haha

I'm also not terribly interested in P:M, so I'm not terribly sorry for not knowing ¬.¬ it's a cool effort, but I like playing Melee

It also depends on when you've played it. We've made grea tstrides week by week. For instance, Magus recently fine tuned all joystick input sensitivities to match melee, so now tilt windows, timings, etc, directly match. When we put out a release, I can guarantee you it will feel pretty damn close.

This is why its still in alpha, after all.

And I will be there to try it out ASAP. I'm very curious about what ideas you've come up for both of my Brawl mains and my Melee main. Kirby the same as Melee or better? What about Zero-Suit Samus? Does SAMUS play as she does in Melee (it broke my heart when I found out firsthand what they did to her on Brawl)? HMMMMMMMMM....

Please, don't go turning this into another P:M thread. Getting tired of seeing all these promising topics flipped into that discussion. Just let it release and we'll see for ourselves. We'll take your word for it until then. :\

On the TOPIC at hand,
I've noted mostly how I would love to see a "Melee 2" similarly to how there's a Street Fighter 2 2... created under the title "Street Fighter 4". SF4 was intended to branch off SF2, using many of the same characters and elements (I think?).

But yeah, SSB4 as a Melee "sequel" would be awesome. Shame with the recent Sakurai review, appealing to the gaming market has become the new thing. Because, you know, money! That's what making games is all about! Get a few more suckers to fall into the hype, and forget the true fans of the series, ohhhh, wouldn't want to appeal to THOSE basement dwellers. Getting people INTO games, to spend hours learning characters and enjoying a technical experience whenever they want? Blasphemy.
Sakurai.........................

If Sakurai want's to put in another straight 13+ months with no time off again.

We can definitely can see another Melee in the future. But in this day and age. People are getting lazier and lazier on videogames.

You can SWD with Samus, no extenderrrrrr, and can't MC as easily, because of the landing detection on on their knees, and not feet, (or something), but she feels a lot like Melee Samus. Kirby is amazingly good, gave him ins nair from 64, and kept his amazing combo ability from 64. Last I played, about two-three weeks ago, ZSS had basically nothing to her, and she crashed the game.

Since we seem to want to bring other topics into this, I did create the "balance patch" topic in the melee workshop that is attempting to do what the title suggests.

The one advantage it has over project M is that the physics will NEVER differ from the original; you do have more characters, giving it a more "sequel" feel. I guess we'll see as time goes on...

Maybe some competitive player will rule nintendo one day and decree "I demand a smash game, where we start with the entire melee engine, add the brawl characters melee-fied, and then finally add MORE characters."

Landing detection wasnt my problem. My biggest problems were how difficult it was to wd OOS, the fact that id you try to shield immediately after dashing, you'd roll, and that shine-turnarounds basically don't work.

The absolute biggest buzzkill is the gravity. Characters still fall WAY too fast.

We know about the WD OoS problem and have tried fixing it in the past. That's why it's an alpha.

Also, "falling too fast" is once again an attribute of landing detection. You're landing sooner because characters land on their feet, not their knees. So while it may seem like you're falling faster than in Melee you're not, you're landing sooner. Believe me, kay?
