Sakurai never said anything about the games getting separate release date, what he said what that one game could be completed earlier than the other one. So for example, if Smash 4 Wii U is completed earlier than Smash 4 3DS, then its possible it could be held back from release until Smash 4 3DS is also released.

Its really reading comprehension that needs to be done here (the same with Sakurai's comment with DLC). Considering that DLC was not even announced for NSMBU at the beginning, I would not be surprised if DLC for Smash 4 happened a few months after release as well.

I am now greatly concerned about the roster, and really crossing my fingers for DLC. Why couldn't I just have gotten Ridley in Brawl?
If you want to take to heart every word Sakurai says as law of the land, then yes. Which I don't think we should do seeing how he is human and is capable of changing his mind based on circumstances.

But keep in mind, Nintendo may push for the WiiU versions more to increase WiiU sales. These are the same people who rushed Wind Waker on the GCN, leaving out dungeons for the sake sales as well.

Sakurai has already said both versions will have the same number of characters. So folks, the 3DS version is going to handicap the Wii U version.
Reading comprehension. Nowhere does he say that the number of characters will be handicapped due to the 3DS.

BTW, whatever happened to you GUARANTEEING that Ridley, Little Mac or King K Rool would be shown during the initial reveal?

Still an unlikely character, chronobound, but not impossible.

Sakurai did say that we didn't just want a Smash that was more than a bigger roster and more game modes so the possibility of decreasing the roster doesn't sound so farfetched (something we don't want to hear but it has to happen sooner or later.) But also Sakurai sometimes doesn't keep promises so I'm skeptical on that statement of his.

The only way I can see the 3DS version not completely crippling the Wii U version is if it doesn't carry over a lot of extra modes/content.

I can understand why Sakurai would want both rosters to have the same amount of characters ideally, but I think him prioritizing the accomodations of the 3DS, and deliberately handicapping the Wii U's potential is ridiculous. Am not pleased. :glare:

Damn 3DS. Hopefully the cuts are minimal.

Personally, I am very doubtful on Chrom now after hearing this news unless he bumps out Ike. I can't see Sakurai including two characters that are both very similar aesthetically and in terms of feel in such a limited roster.

I also think that Smash 4 will only have 14 newcomers at best (unless he goes cut crazy).

Really, the only characters in danger for being cut are:
- Snake
- Sonic
- Ike
- Lucario
- Toon Link
- Lucas
- Wolf
- Falco
- Ice Climbers (technical limitations in the 3DS version bumps them altogether entirely?)
- ROB
There are 5 of my fave characters on this hypothetical chopping block! SAKURAI!!!

Sakurai more or less hinted at it. Also, we are supposedly getting Little Mac.

I don't like the fact that the 3DS can be limiting the roster size on the Wii U paired with hesitation on DLC.

However, I do welcome cuts. I rather have flavorful characters that each add something to the game. Really, three space animals with similar specials and a Final Smash?

I don't want four FE characters. I do not want Little Mac in with a "similar moveset to Marth but with fists" as many have suggested.

You really only need one Earthbound character if you are just going to slap on the same specials.

Concentrate on really sculpting the veterans. Ganondorf, for instance, should feel like a new character. Bowser has a whole different set of stances and movement.

I feel like the two of the three announced newcomers all add something special. The Villager is a nice trap character with a very flavorful set of moves. Megaman is a projectile based character, with at least half of his A moves being projectiles (and all of his specials if Rush can fall on people after being midair bounced).

The Wii Fit Trainer seems more like stepping on the toes of Zamus, but we have not seen all her specials. She can be a Sheik/Zamus/Falcon hybrid with combos, a projectile, and a more balanced approach with strength.

I think Sakurai made a big mistake making two of the three choices for newcomers not characters that were popularly requested. There is now going to be a lot of anxiety about Smash 4 not only due to their favorite character possibly being cut, but also due to potentially the numbers of newcomers being a step down from Melee and Brawl.

Does it not sound more like he's talking about individual characters, like what's already been said about guys like Ice Climbers? Reducing Samus/Zamus to just Samus, etc. Doesn't look good for Pokemon Trainer, if that's the case, and maybe a transforming Mewtwo is off the cards as well. But then, you'd have to ask why they can't all just be individual characters themselves...

Wolf is semi clone so i think he is safe.

I'm a bit confused though. If the 3DS limits the roster size, and they'll add as much as they can although there will be cuts due to limitations, how can DLC characters make sense? It'd just be adding what apparently COULD NOT have been added. Or am I missing something here?

More or less what I'm thinking, yeah.

Edit: True, SD cards possibly...

I do feel that Wii Fit Trainer could be a Zamus replacement. Not sure if people enjoyed a Final Smash linking characters. And while the Villager and Megaman both offer something to the game, Wii Fit Trainer seems like a hybrid of quick female characters with a touch of the Captain.

SD cards? IDK
If entirely new characters could be patched onto a Wii console which has now harddrive (I am talking about the Brawl hacks), then they potentially could do that for Smash 4 for the 3DS version. I mean in terms of downloading stuff, we are able to download entire massive huge games for the 3DS onto the console. However, I do think that Sakurai has to be thinking about the possibility of DLC even if he does not admit so publically.

I never really liked ZSS that much anyway. However, I would still be disappointed with the cut of an original character.

Hopefully if ZSS was cut, Sakurai replaces her with Ridley as Metroid's second playable character (though we will probably get that ugly Other M version considering that Samus is in her Other M form as well).

I still think Sakurai made a big mistake with the newcomer selection he did (especially if Little Mac, Mii, and Pac-Man are true too).

Why is it a mistake to add Villager and Wii Fit Trainer? I, for one, am glad that SSB4 is NOT going to have a conservative roster filled with Brawl characters + Melee cut characters + popularly requested characters.

First of all, Sakurai said:
"So we're forced into the situation where we may need to reduce some characters to a certain degree. but we're really working hard in order to include as many characters as possible."
To me, that "may need" means that it is still possible to have all Brawl characters return in Smash 4.

Second, some change wouldn't be so bad after all. Heck, I main Lucario and I wouldn't mind if he was cut to make room for Isaac or Toad (if it's for Mii though, i "may need" to throw my chair at my computer).

Unless I read over it, I don't think sakurai is just talking about amount of space. In the Ign article he says how characters that incorporate more than one fighter are harder to do on the 3ds. It could be that the only characters in jeopardy are PKM trainer, I've climbers, and shelda.

If anything, it sounds more like Brawl's development, where Sakurai had his list of characters that were low priority and had to be axed due to time or other limitations.

While it's painful to consider we might get some cuts this time around, I suppose that's always been something to think about, regardless of this news.

If the cuts were limited to the ICs, ZSS, Sheik, and PKMN Trainer, I guess that wouldn't be horrible (though I'd miss PKMN Trainer), but I don't know how likely that is. And again, the Wii U's outcome being tethered to an inferior system (capability-wise) is just... disappointing.

The lack of plans for DLC isn't too troubling at this point though, Sakurai always tries to make the game as complete as he can before thinking about additional content. Just because he has none planned for now doesn't mean there won't be any later, especially once the team realizes what can and can't make it into the final version closer to release. Even with these comments, I'd still be totally unsurprised (I might even expect it now given the comments on cuts) if cut veterans were implemented as DLC. Sakurai is going to have a Forbidden 7 equivalent this time as well after all...

Good god guys, calm down... okay... think about this for a moment. Do you know what took up most of the data of the Brawl disc? The SSE cutscenes... I'm not joking. I'm almost positive that even stages took up more data space than characters. Really, you guys are freaking out over nothing...

Shelda? Are you serious?

I can see ICs gone maybe but Shelda, no way.

Albert: Indeed, but what could possibly take the spots for this game now? I bet the more amazing it is, the more size-heavy it'll be.
