Remember that Sakurai decides the roster early on. Unless he has heard of the game before February, 2012 (roster was very likely decided by then for the most part), it's not going to do any good unless he wants to add Krystal/Goroh/Black Shadow as a last-minute character.
That's true, but since Retro's game was most likely originally to be shown last E3, it wouldn't be too surprising if, since they were almost ready to reveal their project, Sakurai had at least known what it was, if not seen it, a few months previously. Plus if some Namco employee comments are to be believed, the roster would still be open to additions as late as summer 2012.

I still stand by games being announced this year would probably be the last that could affect the playable roster.

@Johnny boi...

Well, youjustgot****tasteisall...

>not liking Pirates 4 for the banter between Jack and Barboussa.

Also, Pirates 3 had Keith Freaking Richards play Jack's dad!! How could anyone hate a movie that does that?
I do agree that 2 was pretty meh though.
Well the banter was good, but what they did was largely pointless.

And I said I liked the first 20 minutes (aka when they were in London). I thought the plot and the action up to that point was incredible. It would be cool if they really did just leave a Pirates movie in one spot where lots of things are happening instead of going off to places where nothing happens.
Freaking beat me to it...

The cutoff for playable characters in Smash seems to be whatever games are either released or in the later development phase when development of a new Smash game begins. For Brawl, the latest game that got representation in a playable character was Mother 3 in the form of Lucas which was released April 2006, a few weeks before Brawl was shown at E3 06. According to Sakurai, almost all the characters had either been decided or already added to the game by E3 06 meaning that the roster was one of the first things decided in the development process. As we all know though, there were exceptions. Sonic was added in July/August 2007 and Toon Link (semi-clone of Link), Jigglypuff (a returning character), and Wolf (a semi-clone of Fox) sat on the fence for a long time before being added but it seems that Sonic was the only completely original character that was added later on solely because of his absurd popularity.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Sonic part is definitely true, and there are hints of your Wolf argument being true, but the rest I have never seen a source for over the past 5 years.
You're going to severely disappointed then.
I mean I'd rather Pit and Meta Knight then cut Lucas and Toon Link. The former two characters were campy as hell, and made a competitively awful to watch and play (IMO) game in Brawl worse, while the latter two, not so much.

Fortunately, Namco Bandai can fix up Pit and Meta Knight to be awesome, aggressive, more balanced (especially Meta Knight, who broke Brawl), and not campy.

Seems legit.

Hell, pretty much everyone in Brawl was forced to play defensively, so let's remove every single character in that case.

For no real good reason, either.
There can be no good reason for this.

Infinite PK Thunder.
I was talking about PK Flash there you fool! :p I know what you want with that!

The only PK move Ness uses in Smash that he uses in EarthBound is PK Flash and PK Shield.
:urg:

It's okay, I haven't practiced in awhile too. But seriously, I get too nervous sometimes when I'm playing online, then of course I make mistakes. But that's one thing I need to improve on. I don't even know how will I handle a real life tournament. :nervous: But the experience seems like fun, especially if you like playing Smash.
From my experience, playing in a real life tournament is fun because everyone is really nice and friendly, which really helps me a lot.

That's good. Well, whenever you guys want to do it, perhaps you can hit me up and I'll see what I can do (hopefully I can fix my Wii by then).
Since it's coming around the corner, and it is the weekend, I'm open to trying to do it anytime we are available to do so, unless we want to do it the night before the Directs.

Maybe we should all wait for Smash 4 and good online before we have a tournament.
Agreed, but this isn't a tournament. Just messing around really. :)
Or you all should just come to my house for you to get your butts kicked by THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!!
It'd be best if we didn't, watching you cry would really go against your "BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!!" image.

I'm saying if I had to cut 2 characters, I'd cut those 2 over the other 37, including Toon Link and Lucas.

And yes, everyone in Brawl is campy, but Pit defines campy, while Meta Knight shows us how awful stalling and planking is all while being ridiculously OP'd (Game Arts failed big time on his design like they did with most everything else). On top of that, I find Pit to play very awkward and have some really weird aerials and specials. I think Pit's animations and moves probably need more fixing up than any other character playable in Brawl.

Of course, I'd prefer no one get cut (I really like all the roster from Brawl and its' potential), but again, this is just who'd I would cut if I had to cut characters.

I just want characters who have similar movesets in Brawl to have a moveset that differentiates them more.

Opinions.

For the record, the characters that would in theory be on the cutting block would be Jigglypuff, Wolf, and Toon Link. Not bias ether, all three characters had low priority compared to other characters and would of gotten cut if there wasn't enough time.

There can be no good reason for this.
Lucas and Ness in Brawl are two of 4-6 characters in Brawl that when I stopped playing Brawl 2 or 3 years ago I considered their play style "fun." And plus, Lucas in Brawl Minus and Project M is just absolutely awesome to play as. That to me is saying something IMO.
I was talking about PK Flash there you fool! :p I know what you want with that!
Still needs like 4 times the range. But seriously, even with that, air dodges, shields, and side step dodges make it a fairly easy move to "DODDDGEEEE!!!"
Seriously bro, you need to play EarthBound and MOTHER 3. If you love (revolutionary) RPG's, comedy, and America/Japan spoofs, this game is for you.
From my experience, playing in a real life tournament is fun because everyone is really nice and friendly, which really helps me a lot.
This. Plus, the level of talent at tournaments varies a lot, and there's always something to learn, someone to learn from, and a new match up/play style for any character you didn't know to practice on.The last tournament I went to I faced one of the best Melee Yoshi players out there, and holy crap, dem combos when Yoshi doesn't SD man!
It'd be best if we didn't, watching you cry would really go against your "BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!!" image.
I could beat all of you at Smash Wii U and 3DS... assuming that they aren't so camper and staller-friendly like Brawl! :chuckle:

My personal theory is that they chose to do Jigglypuff later in the development time due to her being generally easier to program than some other characters, so that a last-minute addition wouldn't seem too Farfetch'd.

Just my personal theory with no factual grounds whatsoever. Just my personal theory.

Yep, I pretty much used just whoever was funnest in the roster honestly. That's why for newcomers I look for who would be just plain fun to play! :chuckle:

Through the Virtual Console I will be playing the first, and I am afraid that either the other two won't follow or it'll take a long time... I might have to suck it up and get them on my computer just so I can play finally. I'm very very interested.

You are absolutely right. There were deadly knowledgeable people, people who just played for fun, even people who pick Kirby then spam Down B and Up B the entire fight. I ended up going up against all types of levels of players, some were the best I've ever played.

I'm not very good at Brawl (partially) because I'm not willing to play campy. It's because I just want to have fun.

E3 what's that all I care about is Animal Crossing in my hand within the next 24 hours. After that, time stops, and when I divert my eyes, I will see the Smash trailer.

Pit might be kind of annoying as **** to play against but Pika and Marth have so many better options at a close range and in the air that it all comes down to reading rolls, dodges and stupid moves. I've played against Smashradge and Stryks (Yes, they're not the best Pit mains but they have the results to sway people's opinions of Pit) and at the end of the sets I was like "well that was simple."

My top 3 do have good options against MK but he's just too damn lag less. He's not broken but people abuse him to the point where I just don't do anything. It kills my enjoyment of the game for two to three 8 minute periods.

You see, it was a very funny joke because I said "all I care about is Animal Crossing in my hand" when I should have said "hands." Otherwise it could imply I lost my hand in a cleaning accident or something because who holds a 3DS with one hand I mean really that thing in unwieldy.

I still do that. I always play who I enjoy playing the most more often than not. It just so happens most of the time your favorite characters are your favorites in part because they're really good, but that has never been the case with my love of Ness!

Shut up and play EarthBound already, and then let Nintendo take your money!

A few of us at Rule 6 last summer (including Shroomed, one of the best players in the world and the world's best Doc, and Alan, who's a great Peach) played Giant Melee on Brinstar with Giant Mushrooms on very high. If you get a Giant Mushroom and hit the lava and you aren't one of the 8 lightest characters, you die, in a slow, painful way, as if you were gradually "falling" the lava. And quite frankly, it's hilarious.

No really, you should try it out. It's freaking hilarious listening to and watching the characters die, especially with other people around.
I'm not very good at Brawl (partially) because I'm not willing to play campy. It's because I just want to have fun.
I tried using a Toon Link style comprised of baiting and partially using camping methods, but in the end, that was no good, and I quit that game.

Who cares what kids think, they're dumb. So weird how cartoons and advertisements try to build them up into thinking they know better than those STUPID GROWN UPS.

Hell, pretty much everyone in Brawl was forced to play defensively, so let's remove every single character in that case.
And for that matter, defensive play is NOT a bad thing. If you want to do YOLO rush down, that's fine, but that's not everyone, hence why we need diverse play styles. We've discussed this.

You also have to look at the big picture as to why camping is dominant in Brawl. Low hitstun, high risk, no preventive measures like anti planking, bias to faster characters, etc.

True, a lot of the joy comes from owning someone else. :smirk: For example Olimar. :p He can beat people who don't know what they are doing just by flicking the C-stick a lot haha.

Shut up and play EarthBound already, and then let Nintendo take your money!
You really make a compelling argument here. I'll see what I can do in the near future.

Can't say I've done that before, and admittedly it sounds like a lot of fun. XP Whenever I play Melee next I'll do that ha.

I tried using a Toon Link style comprised of baiting and partially using camping methods, but in the end, that was no good, and I quit that game.
And Toon Link is so fun too! As opposed to... >__> :link2: (Well, he's a little fun I guess).

I remember a few years ago someone told me "just wait until people find out the purple Pikmin and forward smash are broken." I heard that from a lot of places actually. A lot of people who didn't play Olimar much speculated that C-stick to the left or right + purple Pikmin = win, but it took the Olimar mains forever to catch on they were serious!
You really make a compelling argument here. I'll see what I can do in the near future.
Still too far out. This game is calling you.
Can't say I've done that before, and admittedly it sounds like a lot of fun. XP Whenever I play Melee next I'll do that ha.
It probably works on Brawl, too (seeing as how Brawl has Brinstar and the option to turn Super Mushrooms on Very High).
And Toon Link is so fun too! As opposed to... >__> :link2: (Well, he's a little fun I guess).
Link is awful to play as. All of his specials are inferior to Toon Link, and he's so slow for such a supposedly athletic character.
