A: The very idea that they are doing it for the lulz. They don't REALLY want him in, they are trolling. (disclaimer, some legitimately do though and just happened to have encountered it through 4Chan of all places)
And yes, None is better... These are all the characters that are necessary to represent this franchise. the Main, the Bro, the plot device (lol), and the villain. anything else is fluff.
Maybe, like, 5 would be reasonable. 7 is over the top. Popularty doesn't define how many characters the series gets.
The most realistic number of characters in SSB4 is 50. So, give the other 2 slots to others, like... Dillion and Quote! Or one character each for the Donkey Kong series or LoZ series.
Its already been stated the character roster will be smaller from that of brawl. This is due to the hard work of buffering a majority of characters to make the game seem fair. Though I'm sure they will keep th most common characters from the smash series.
Nd lets hope they will bring back the old Falcon that stood at the top of the tier list nd not go haywire buffering like in brawl =P
If anyone should be buff'd/replaced it should be:
Metaknight (of course)
Sonic (just give him back to sega plz)
GameN'Watch (Lets face it,he has no use in this franchise)

That was never stated. Sakurai merely stated that Gameplay improvements have priority over roster expansion in Smash 4, and everyone suddenly assumes this means that the game will have 30 characters.

Exactly. Most people went giddy when they thought Toon Link and the "clonies" would be cut and replaced with 3rd party unlikelys.Do I really care if one character is similar to another. It alows them to put more characters in the game and also stops any Meta Knight no-nos(if you know what I mean). If you don't like a character just don't play as them.Just sit back and play your game.

"There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive. In terms of quantity, we've probably already reached the limit of what's feasible. I think a change of direction may be what's needed"
How does Sakurai sleep at night knowing he said that? That HE said that? I mean, SSBB had terrible balance via characters. Look at Ganondorf. Look at Bowser.
Or should I mention a certain character?
"Cause I'm brooookeen..."
Unless he's saying this is what he's learned. Then I take it back.

Please keep in mind that Sakurai was the sole person in charge of balancing since 64; that was a huge factor in seeing balance slip as the franchise's roster grew.

Since balancing is more of a team effort this time around, balance should be greatly improved this time around. Though at the same time the balancing shouldn't interfere with the chaotic nature of the series.
First of all, I believe Sakurai said 36 characters, which is what brawl had, so no improvement in size just quality.
Second that is for the console version, I want the 3ds version to be smaller. About melee size so somewhere around 25 characters. He also said it was going to be more personal. I don't quite know what he has in mind, but that makes me thinks a lot of single player content and stats. Which i like. Once the release of SSBU the 3DS version's multiplayer will be limited to wifi and things like being on trips. No one would rather play on the 3ds with friends locally if they could do it on a tv. This gives the 3ds version something different from the WiiU version. Also the reduced roster allows for faster release to tide us fans over while they finish the WiiU version.
What if, Super Smash Bros 3D was a "Retro" game? As in, It's stages are all retro stages, but with a solid (Mario Kart 7) sized roster. (No exclusives, No Final smashes, maybe one/two reps from each franchise, save Luigi and Jiggs, as well as 3 or 4 new franchise newcomers from SSB4? Total roster size of 20?)
[COLLAPSE="Roster could be:"]Mario
Luigi
Link
Samus
Kirby
Donkey Kong
Ness
Pikachu
Yoshi
Captain Falcon
Olimar
Jigglypuff
Marth
Mr. Game and Watch
Ice Climbers
Pit
Sonic
Little Mac?
Takamaru?
Chibi-Robo?
Animal Crosser, Perhaps? c:
[/COLLAPSE]
I wouldn't mind a smaller game that focused on taking a trip through memory lane with retro stages.
That way when they come out, they're NOT the same game, and there can be benefits to owning both. (Unlock the stages in the 3DS version, in the Wii U version by 'sync' or something.

It have to cost 22c,have every stage from 64,Melee and Brawl,an LBP style level editor and a feature that lets you print money for me to buy it with that size roster!Edit:Wait the 3DS version? Now I get you!
Yeah, I really am curious to see how they handle the 3DS version...
Does anyone happen to know how much data the 3DS's game cart can hold? I'm not sure if it would be possible for a roster of say 45 to work on the 3DS version.

Unless he's saying this is what he's learned. Then I take it back.
He probably learned that during development. The main thing I remembered from the earlier interviews was that he was talking about each of the characters having their strengths and weaknesses and that they balance the roster as a result.
@Onyx: I'd be perfectly happy with that roster and some revamped old stages, so long as that included Rainbow Cruise, Dreamland 64, Big Blue, Metal Caverns and potentially Majora's Mask.
I think the 3DS version will have fewer music tracks - no more than 2 or 3 per stage. If you've ever messed around with file replacement in Brawl, you know that the music files are the biggest things on the disc. Cutting a lot of those will probably free up a lot of room for character, stage, costume, and other files.
Really? Huh. I never knew that. Just curious, did the Masterpieces take up a lot of space? Also, about how big are the music files to other files proportionally?

Anyway they'll both have the same roster of about 50.
No,I think the 3DS version will have less characters and a few exclusives (characters who have more games on portables like Dillion)who can be moved onto the Wii U version. There will also be less trophys limited to playables, final smashes and items. That's my idea of the 3DS version.P.S I still think Waluigi should be in the Wii U version and Toon Link shouldn't be cut!
Honestly the only way I see Toon Link going anywhere is if he's replaced with another child incarnation of Link, which could happen with a Majora's Mask remake, for example. Sakurai did say that he felt it was important to have both a Child and Adult Link. Personally, I'd rather have Toon Link than Masked Link, but that's just me.

No one respects you yet, Tyrogue. Don't talk a big game, because you don't know what you are talking about.
on music in smash 3ds. Music can be compressed, music can have a lesser quality on a handheld because the necessity of a high quality file is uneccessary to the speakers of the hardware.
as for characters, reduce the polygon count, no one would care. in fact, that is what they are going to do. deal with it.
8 GB huh? I thought it was something like that. And yeah less music sounds about right though again, it could always be compressed and slightly lower quality.
I'd be content with if the character models looked of the same or similar quality of that of kid icarus uprising.

The music files are several MB apiece - most character files are a few hunderd KB. Stages can range from a few hundred KB to a few MB. Nes games are about 8 MB apiece, so not much bigger than most music files. The Ocarina of time partition is over 50 MB.
EDIT:
Largest music file: 8 MB
Largest Stage: 4 MB
Character directory: 662 MB
VS Stage directory: 147 MB
Adventure Stage Directory: 504 MB
Music directory: 1 GB
You could easily cut at least half a GB by cutting some of the music.

Or Cave Story's Quote.
