Actually we can't remove it as a possibility. There have been various cases where a General Direct is followed by another one
- November 2012 and December 2012
- December 2012 and January 2013
- January 2013 and February 2013
- April 2013 and May 2013
- May 2013 and June 2013
- June 2013 and July 2013
- July 2013 and August 2013
- October 2013 and November 2013
- November 2013 and December 2013
While they are indeed old and no longer the typical norm, we can't deny that these occasions happened and frequently. We have to assume that Nintendo can do it again. Because for two whole years they did. Who is to say they can't deal a double whammy once again? There are really only three months left in the year. And one of them belongs to a Smash Direct.

Kidding, though seriously, I think Xenoblade X's soundtrack is one of it's shining features. I've seen people make points for it's world, characters, graphics, structure, plot, formatting, pacing, and more but most people universally agree that the soundtrack was not one of the many problems with that game. I do love Xenoblade X even with all it's flaws it's a damn good game.
Plus, Xenoblade X's soundtrack was obviously inspired by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and that's always a good thing because RHCP is ****ing fire imo.

Funny because it's the opposite for me, all the people I've talked to agreed that Sawano should not come back again. Now mind you, there are absolute gems in the soundtrack, Noctilum being one of my all time favorites tracks over the 3 xenoblade games, but if you watched some anime he worked on, for every 10/10 track there are in the game at least 5 4/10 ones come through, especially since he's worse than Sakuraba when it comes to making music that ressemble your past work, same song structure, same exact instruments, same singers.
I guess there's bit of bias because I'm familiar with his music already (also the fact that the game had awful sound design). That's why I want a XCX2 so bad lol, there's gigantic room for improvement

It's speculation based on Sakurai's smash 4 interviews. Ice Climbers worked on the Switch, but didn't on 3ds, roster must remain the same so they're cut completely. Pokemon Trainer's transformation gimmick was a problem, cut and solo charizard. Lucas' final smash wasn't compatible with the 3ds so he's put on the chopping block.
Lucas was always on those 'Top to be cut' lists cause the current smash hivemind hated clones and he was unnecessary and then when he was actually cut, that mindset came out fool force, Lucas was cut cause he was an unnecessary 'clone' and Sakurai realized this and Ness was the only rep needed. Then when Lucas is brought back as DLC Sakurai goes into detail about how they had to adjust Lucas' final smash to make him work on the 3ds.
If Sakurai cut playable characters (even a melee vet like Ice Climbers) because they didn't work on the 3ds, why would it be any stranger for him to drop an assist trophy that causes problems.
I mean unless people want to think that Isaac's assist was cut cause he's irrelevant and Nintendo hates Golden Sun, it just seems more logical given what he's said about the playable characters.
Edit: Forgot to mention how an additional song from Dark Dawn was added to 4, and adding a song to cut that series assist doesn't make much sense unless the assist was a problem.

I saw someone on the golden sun reddit mention a golden sun anime as a possible means of reviving the series. I don't think it would unless it was exceptionally well made and grabbed the attention of weebs for the season it releases. That does give me a good excuse to do this though:

I can see it happening and not happening. I can see it happening because a some dead games some how received anime years later. Tower of Druaga got one...
Of course, Nintendo used to release anime for their games all the time, even F-Zero and Animal Crossing, but it hasn't really lately aside from Pokemon. And series perfect for it haven't gotten any (Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem). If GS gets an anime then they have to really capture the sense of adventure it had.
Though it seems video game movies are on the rise again: Mario, Metal Gear, Sonic, Pokemon, and Monster Hunter (wtf and TI is in it). Hopefully they're not terrible, 99% of video game and anime live action movies are terrible or "too bad its good"

Oh boy I was wanting some crack-pot theories to spice up my day
At this point it is clear they are just using what they have to make a nice neatened layout. I doubt we'll see the final result until the game's release
And at this point I think that they already know what are they doing... It's possible they're playing with this kind of stuff just to keep people entertained and generate hype (MORE)...
But yeah, at least there's something new in the room internet can discuss, these past days were a little boring.

The fact that there are empty spaces in the first place means that the product is not finite. Literally nothing changes for us, unless you care about boxists' opinions.
Well, with the card being out and already sold in Japan, it's the final product and thus only shows the characters revealed so far. So it really changes nothing of what's still to come.
Though conveniently it does have two "empty" slots so the box theory will likely kick off again even if there isn't much correlation.

Tell you what, let's make our own crackpot theory.
Seeing as how everyone "insists" the box theory is all about a grid, let's look at all numbers the final count could be just based on which numbers can be easily divided. Seeing as how the box and card art MUST have everything line up evenly in a row
- 72 - 2x36, 3x24, 4x18, 6x12, 8x9
- 74 - 2x37
- 75 - 3x25, 5x15
- 76 - 2x38, 4x19
- 77 - 7x11
- 78 - 2x39, 3x26, 6x13
- 80 - 2x40, 4x20, 5x16, 8x10
72 isn't the only number out there. 72, 75, 77, 78 and 80 all look like nice options. So "clearly" the final count must be one of those numbers
And because it all can be displayed on a grid evenly it must be true

The fact that it's aligned in the center tells me that it's just to be presentable and isn't indicative of a final tally. In spite of that, we're going to have "theorists" come out and claim to know everything because, "obviously these things can't change and Sakurai would absolutely let this cat out of the bag early!".
What you see isn't always what you're going to get.

"So there is a playlist of character trailers on YouTube for the Smash website. 10 days before the Smash Direct in August the playlist was updated. The same thing happened before the General Direct in September and it apparently happened again 2 days ago!
Nothing appears to have been added, but this is exactly what happened before other character reveals. Probably preparing the playlist for the new character trailer(s)."
