Why does there have to be a grassland? We already have one in the 3D Land stage, and on the Wii U, there's Windy Hill. I really don't see the need for more grasslands, especially over something like a casino stage.
The greenery stage, be it Green Hill, Emerald Hill, Green Forest, Windy Hill or any of the countless others, is by far the most common stage type in Sonic game to the point that, unless I'm very mistaken, no series entry lacks it. It always features early on and, while often somewhat samey, the stage type, if not the stage, is thus a very recognisable part of the Sonic franchise. To do away with it in Smash would be to do away with a major series staple. The casino stage, while also a recurring theme, does not replace it.

I'm not entirely convinced we need a second greenery stage myself but the 3DS might be rather lacking in that area otherwise.

I dunno, I feel like it would almost be a waste if every Sonic stage was a grassland. Sure it's in every game, but there are more unique areas the series has to offer. I was fine with Green Hill in Brawl, but if all new Sonic stages are grasslands, it'll be kinda bland. Sonic and grasslands is a similar case to Donkey Kong and jungles. EVERY DK stage ever has been a jungle of sorts, and please don't quote me on this, I haven't played any Donkey Kong Country I'm pretty sure the series has much more interesting locations to offer.

I get what you're saying there and I agree but would you not find it weird if no DK stage was a jungle in this game? Not even a returning DK jungle stage?
Ideally, what I'd like to see is Green Hill either ported or redone and a new stage in either the ancient ruin or casino style but Windy Hill Zone has already wrecked that idea.

The second most-used archetype in Sonic is factory, and we should've gotten Planet Wisp.

I actually agree with this. Planet Wisp would've been the perfect new Sonic stage; I say this despite not even being a fan of the game it comes from. Why?
  1. It meshes the two most recurring Sonic level archetypes in the Sonic series: grassland and factory/mechanical. Not only does this make it perfectly suited to give off an exclusively "Sonic" vibe, it'd also be able to house a wide range of music, ranging from the more upbeat and the whimsical to the more "extreme".
  2. It's a location noted for its visual impressiveness, and would look astounding in HD.
  3. Its debut game, Sonic Colors, marked the beginning of the "Nintendo exclusivity" policy that Sonic games have largely followed since its release. It was exclusive to Wii and DS. It is thus widely known among Sonic fans that primarily play Nintendo consoles.
  4. It's one of the most iconic and popular levels among the more recent Sonic games, representing Sonic Colors in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations.
  5. Its music is a favorite among Sonic fans.

Planet Wisp was an absolute no-brainer, and we got Windy Hill. If Planet Wisp is on the 3DS, then I'll just come to the conclusion that the 3DS's much better stages are a total arm-twisting to buy both versions.

So far, I'd say the 3DS stages have a bit more panache. Nintendogs even has a certain charm to it. WiiU definitely is reaching for the HD factor. I guess we'll get a better picture after E3. I think both versions could end up pretty even.

Why can't a Mario 3 stage exist? Sooooooooooooo raged.

I'll tell you what's money: Super Mario All-Stars stage. You know the little chimes when the screen closes into black and into the game selection screen? It'd be nice if a stage consisted of that and switched between stages from Mario 1-3.

I would also like to see the Mario 2 stage (or another) return.

Sadness.

So far the only cool stages on the Wii U are Pilotwings and Gateway Galaxy, oh, and Pokemon League.

I actually like almost all of the Wii U stages and think that the 3DS stages range from mediocre at best to absolutely dull at the worst. I'm excited more for Smash Run than actual Vs Mode gameplay on that version. I can't think of a single exclusive stage that looks like it'd be fun to play on more than a few times.

Meanwhile, I'm loving the Wii U stages so far. The only ones I'm not too big a fan of are Wii Fit Studio and Pokémon League, but I'll need more information on that latter one before I can form a real opinion.

Also, I second the suggestion for a SMB3 stage, and the return of Kingdom II. I'd like a lot more stages from games that aren't so recent. There's a lot of unexplored potential that's just been ignored for far too long.

I would really love to see a Mario Kart 8 stage for the Wii U. One of the greatest things about that game, aside from the gameplay of course, is the incredible visuals. I could easily picture dueling it out on the Technodome, antigravity engages, and the stage flips upside down. Plus, the music!

Well, my favorite stage shown in any particular detail so far is Pilotwings and my second favorite is Garden of Hope and my third favorite is Prism Tower... well just by looking at them anyway... Other than that I'd say the 3DS and Wii U are kind of even for the most part. I like the Wii U Mario U stage more than the 3D land stage so far though.

Looks like Sakurai has been generous with stages lately.

Looks like it's the same general idea as the 3DS Fire Emblem stage. I hope it's significantly different.

Honestly, I've been blown away by the stages announced this week.

Both the Mario U stage and this new one are gorgeous. Between them and Pyrosphere, the new FD, Windy hill, kalos league, and the rest, the wii U has a damn beautiful selection. I'm incredibly pumped.

I'm a little less excited for hte 3DS stages, but I'm sure there are some surprises yet.

WiiU stages are phenomenal indeed, clearly the superior version.
3DS stages are being crippled by the hardware itself, not many of them push it very far (Reset Bomb Forest seems the biggest one in this sense). I kinda hope some of them will receive an HD-version DLC on the WiiU.

Are we really here just for the looks? Beauty doesn't make a stage and, even if it did, you don't need HD graphics to look pretty.
My gripe with the 3DS stages is how so many of them look like Delphino Plaza, Mushroomy Kingdom and all those other needlessly chaotic Brawl stages.

I really want a new Kirby Stage that isn't just platforms. I guess we kind of got one since the Arena from those games is basically Colosseum.

How about a stage where you are on the Scope Shot minigame where the Waddle Dee Tank is firing missiles and other attacks on you from the background? And you are on a arena in the foreground?

It would go well with a Bandana Dee Reveal. :|

Would be neat if the Coliseum was also available at the E3 demo.

Is this thread only for Wii U stages or 3DS too? I will assume it is for both.

So, how will the 3DS Mother stage look like? I don't think the system can handle a gigantic stage like New Pork City.

Are they, though? I am impressed by stages like 3D Land and Spirit Train. Some stages don't really need to be impressive to be good, see: Gerudo Valley.

And I kinda hope the 3DS stages stay exclusive to the 3DS, unless they somehow port the Wii U stages for the 3DS too. It would be fair otherwise.

It is in the Wii U game discussion thread so I'm assuming it is only for Wii U stages.

Anyway, what is the number of new stages do you think we will get? Last time in Brawl we got 31 stages I believe. I'm maybe expecting around 40 new stages in Wii U and 30 in the 3DS version.

Probably not too many more than we got in Brawl. I'm curious to see what retro stages they bring back; hopefully it's not just Brawl stages.

I just hope we don't get a split of stages because we have two separate platforms. Like I hope we don't get 25 different stages for each platform.

Not at all. It would be so, so refreshing after three games' worth of jungles.

I want a DK jungle stage, but I want it to be a mixture of jungle with another unique location type. Juicy Jungle, from Tropical Freeze, for example, is a fruit-processing factory located in a jungle.

Hoping for a Golden Temple stage primarily, though.

Sunset Shores is the only right choice for a DK stage, anything else can go die with Rumble Falls.
