Not to mention there's also the random date when they finally show DQXIs's final trailer as a potential side by side reveal.
Why would they lock a DQ character reveal for Japan only? That defeats the whole purpose of advertising, and sounds more like users here saying "Thanks Japan, but keep it to yourself".
I swear... Sometimes...? e_e
Do they even reveal Smash characters in Japan and not the rest of the world?
Also, I'm keeping an eye out for May 27, Dragon Quest day in Japan. But just cautiously and casually.
Shulk was revealed in a Japanese only 3DS Nintendo Direct, so there's a precedent for a Japanese only reveal. The Game Awards also bodes well for region-focused reveals as it's primarily an American event.
The fact that "season 2" was talked about before Joker was even revealed kind of gives testament to how a lot of people have really low expectations for DLC for this game. The current atmosphere is pessimistic which is part of the reason I keep arguing here because most of the fanbases have taken their lawn chairs back to their minivans and gone home. Expectations for first party characters have all but bottomed out beyond potential shill characters already and people are largely leaning into most of the third party characters being ads. A bit dramatic but "hope" is kind of a corpse right now as far as character speculation goes outside a handful of characters.
So then what's the point of your argument?
Are you arguing for hope? If so, the pessimistic and cynical tone of your argument doesn't convey that at all, and it seems like you're bashing on Dragon Quest and Square Enix moreso than arguing for any sort of hope.
Are you arguing against hope? If so, why? You said it yourself that expectations are at an all time low, so why beat a dead horse? Regardless, the tone of your argument and use of exaggeration advocates more for despair than against hope. There's a clear difference between the two as one leads to bitter resentment whereas the other leads to realistic expectations, with the latter being preferred.
Low expectations aren't a bad thing; having low expectations leads to low disappointment. The fanbase was on track for that until the Grinch hoax skyrocketed hopes, and fans have similarly looked into Joker's reveal as a scapegoat for their wildest dreams when in reality that's simply not the case.
Surely your argument has to be doing something else because it's not about hope.
Isn’t Jump Festa this month? There’s basically no way they announce half of the DLC characters for something that’s supposed to last until February 2020 before we even hit 2019. I would bet a kidney in it.
I am absolutely sure Nintendo is not concerned about things like backlash against anime swordsman. If Erdrick is in, he can be revealed whenever they choose.
I think it would make sense to reveal a character now but not show gameplay like Joker. Having two characters revealed but without gameplay and a release date gives Nintendo the Q1 and Q2 directs to expand on the characters. It'd probably go something like this:
- November 2018: The Plant reveal, gameplay, release date
- December 2018, Joker reveal at TGAs, Erdrick reveal at Jump Festa 2019
- Q1 & Q2 2019: Joker and Erdrick gameplay, release dates
- E3 2019: Fighter 3 and Fighter 4 reveals, Fighter 3 gameplay and release date
- Q3 & Q4 2019: Fighter 4 gameplay and release date, Fighter 5 reveal
- Q1 2020: Fighter 5 gameplay and release date
I wouldn't be surprised if Erdrick comes with gameplay unlike Joker though. There's room for variability in Q1 & Q2 2019 for Erdrick's reveal, gameplay, and release date.
Trust me, I know. But do you really think general Smash players will care about that if they show that they have gotten an Akira Toriyama creation? Especially them that fanatically wants Goku in no matter what? Ps, I don't want Goku in, I just know how people would react.
I get what you mean, especially as someone that is a Fire Emblem fan and is constantly annoyed that people think every FE character looks the same. But the fact still remains that the general players would just scream "F YOU why more anime swordfighters"
What do you mean "general players?" GameFAQs and 4chan? Those places are salt mines and will never be happy. A couple of trolls and frat boys will be mad about no Goku, but again, that's a minority.
I understand that the Smash Bros. fanbase is one of the most immature of them all, and people would certainly be mad and disappointed, but not for those reasons.
