Not to mention there's also the random date when they finally show DQXIs's final trailer as a potential side by side reveal.

Why would they lock a DQ character reveal for Japan only? That defeats the whole purpose of advertising, and sounds more like users here saying "Thanks Japan, but keep it to yourself".
I swear... Sometimes...? e_e

Do they even reveal Smash characters in Japan and not the rest of the world?

Also, I'm keeping an eye out for May 27, Dragon Quest day in Japan. But just cautiously and casually.
Well, they did announce Shulk for Smash 4 on a Japanese specific Nintendo direct

After what happened with the Box/Grinch Leak, it’s become a habit for a lot of people, myself included. I’m hoping this whole situation gets cleared up since with people hearing about seven of these characters, it is giving me a bit of anxiety over how they’ve been heard and what really happened behind the scenes.

General question for the thread, but when the SE character does get revealed, what do you think are the chances that another SE character could pop up in the future like a fighter pass 2?
I don’t think there will be a season 2, but even if there is, the only character I would expect to see there is Geno if it’s a fanservice pack.
We all know. But if Ederick needs another character revealed with him in order to not fall flat, but Joker didn't.. what does that say about Ederick in terms of "hype/demand"?
That he wouldn’t be a very hype character for the West. You’re not saying anything new lol.

I know.. which is why Fatman has a point that something like Jump Fiesta is the most likely place where they are announcing him. The closest thing when it comes international would be Dragon Quest day like shinhed pointed out.

Not really, he could get announced elsewhere. Those two are really good venues, but he could also get announced:

On a Nintendo Direct: because of Nintendo’s ties to DQ.
As a standalone trailer: like Shulk, Robin or Lucina.
As part of an investor call: like Pac-Man.
Pretty much anywhere: if announced with a second character.

So there really isn’t a kill switch.

On a Nintendo direct tied to DQ or in a general together with someone else? maybe.

Since they haven't done a standalone trailer like Shulk (who was announced at a Japanese direct mind you so what stops DQ of everything to be announced at a Japan the only event?) or Robin and Lucina with Ultimate, I seriously doubt that

If he truly got announced as a part of an investor call... if Ederick wouldn't be an obvious shill pick before it sure would be then... Nintendo would be smarter then announce him there.

All things considered... no, I have to say that something like Jump Fiesta is the best bet since Japan is where the hype would be. Doing a general direct, with an indication of Smash DLC news, you announce someone like Ederick? You need to have someone like Geno, Sora or Banjo Kazooie if you want to cover that blow that would be western fans because the "NO MORE ANIME SWORDSMEN" is bigger then some of you might expect. Announcing him at something like Jump Fiesta, it will be setbacks but not as much

Isn’t Jump Festa this month? There’s basically no way they announce half of the DLC characters for something that’s supposed to last until February 2020 before we even hit 2019. I would bet a kidney in it.

I am absolutely sure Nintendo is not concerned about things like backlash against anime swordsman. If Erdrick is in, he can be revealed whenever they choose.

I want to add something more... With all the respect towards those that are arguing for Ederick and think he has a shot. Awesome for you if he gets in.
But if Corrin, a character whose game wasn't even out in the west, said to be added for the sake of promoting Fire Emblem Fates, an entry in a franchise that is more successful then Dragons Quest out here, is agreed upon to be a "shill pick", how would Edrick not be a shill pick with pretty much 90-95% of who would be hyped towards the character would live in Japan and it's extremely well known that Square wants to push Dragon Quest to the west more than ever before?

It's this month yes, but the only reason why people are bringing it up is that Xenother mentioned that 22nd which is when Jump Fiesta is. I agree that it feels like a bit no-no to announce it there, the matter of fact remains that a Japanese only event feels like the best bet for it to be revealed, and I do think they care because they take notice of fan reactions. I mean, it only took a couple of days with people complaining about the online mode, and then suddenly the online was fixed so that you would get the rules you wanted.

The complaints with online dwarfed basically anything else regarding the game. It was universally criticized. It got so bad that mods on Reddit would have to repeatedly forward complaint threads to a megathread. Pro players were openly talking about it.

That’s the sort of the thing that can actually affect the reputation of a brand. Not people complaining about anime swordsman.

What I don't get is why Erdrick doesn't seem like a cool retro pick to a lot of you. Maybe I'm just old but Erdrick is the classic RPG character I see constantly referenced in tons of media, even American gaming parody songs. If nothing else he's a cool rep from the NES era and then can have costumes for Eight and Luminary for that modern flair.

Just because it's not as popular in the West doesn't mean it's not popular at all. I dunno. This narrative I'm seeing in this thread is super weird.

True, but I can't see how they wouldn't have learned from Corringate, who is still hated overall btw (Naga knows how the reaction would he not been unique.) which is one of the reasons why I'm skeptic towards Ederick no matter how unique he could be (that and licensing which I mentioned in another topic here on the board)

Because we have 13 swordfighters already, with most of them being in the "looks like a protagonist from an anime" category. Ederick would just be yet another one of these. The category that has the most characters is as of right now sword users..

On top of that, Square has Geno and Square which is far more requested than Edrick, with Ederick is more then likely only in because of Square wanting to push it here in the west which doesn't make it better

Just an insider question. I guess this also applys to 'Vergeben hearing Incineroar' from months ago.

What is the difference between leaning but not going 100%. Like do you just keep hearing names floating around and speculate until being given full confirmation? Doesnt leaning on a character come off as nothing but speculating?
For myself, if I've been hearing something from multiple sources but have yet to confirm it with my most reliable source, that would be something I'm "leaning towards". I typically would not go public with that type of information though.

I have a similar feeling for how people act towards Banjo-Kazooie in the Ultimate Discussion thread.

I don't really get why people act like characters steal another's slot; I get the SE characters because one actually kills another's chances, but even then I'd be like "well, I'm disappointed in no Geno, but it is what it is, this character seems cool/I don't really care as much now, maybe we'll get him next time."

Really? I haven't checked that thread much but I thought Banjo would be one of the more popular characters.

There are people there who like B-K, and they're not brought up often, but if they are, there's at least a couple of people downplaying them for Steve/would prefer Steve (who I'd also love to be in along with B-K, but I still find it weird).

I don't really see much or any bashing, though, but there may have been some within the past few months at the very least; I know someone mentioned it on the B-K thread...

Banjo is sort of in the same position that Geno is. He isn't with Nintendo, he hasn't had a game in ages so of course (according to them) they shouldn't get in

I don't understand it either, tbh.
It's not like we asked for 7 Swordsmen, from the very same series.
So where people see another anime swordsman, I see one of the last few important gaming Icons, and the first of it's own kind.

It's already bogus when people come up with the moveset excuse..
But it's even worse for me when people bring up that he "looks" like the other anime Swordsmen...

I'm sorry... How?
Erdrick has the disctinctive style of Akira Toriyama. If anything he looks like a Dragon Ball character... Who happens to use a sword.
He could use any other weapon and they'd still shove him in another bunch out off spite.

That's the thing that's baffling to me. Erdrick (and DQ as a whole) is bright and colorful, very classic and retro thanks to Toriyama's distinct style. Visually alone that would cause him to be a unique standout among the roster. Plus, he's a retro icon and stands with, say, Ryu Hayabusa or Bill Rizer as a cool NES third party pick. I don't know, I just think he's cool. I've played like five minutes of some Game Boy Color Dragon Warrior game so it's not like I'm attached to the character outside of knowing he's a retro icon and enjoying that aspect of him.

But I mean, I like the anime swordsmen or whatever so there's that. My most-wanted is in and some of my other most-wanted characters also use swords or lightsabers or are from a predominantly Japanese series or are a shoujo stylist so that's probably it.

I feel like with how iconic monsters are for dragon quest, maybe there will be many on a stage, maybe stage element, maybe just cameo like draculas castle. As well as there being spirits for them. (The leak saying Jack Frost and Slime appear with a skill makes me think of a spirit)

A) 95% of the fans of Dragon Quest is in Japan making him a literal who for a most western audience
B) It's well known that Square wants to push Dragon Quest more than ever which Edrick inclusion would indicate Nintendo would agree to let someone else use their platform for marketing over actual fan favorites like Geno or Sora. If Corrin got a bad taste in peoples mouth because Corrin got in as a promotional material, Why would Edrick be anything different all things considered?

C) Speaking of Fire Emblem. It's not like Fire Emblem has gone well with general Smash fans on how they are representative. Heck, even Fire emblem fans as myself are angry about how they are representative.
D) Your argument Akira would just start the argument of "why the flying F didn't they get Goku if they talked to Akira"
E) Speaking of Akira, distinct or not, someone made by the grandpa of Shonen manga/anime screams anime if anything (and I say this as an anime and manga nerd).

I get that you are a fan of Dragon Quest, and if Ederick gets in, I'm glad for you. But it's easy to see why people are against the idea if you really think about it.

Jack Frost being part of Joker's moveset is an easy bet, but as for Slime my guess would be part of a taunt if they were actually present as part of their movesets in some form.

It's stupid that we have to argue any of this tbh. If Sqaure had a lick of Business sense, they'd be going ALL in on Smash Brothers. But because their so ignorant, we're here fighting like mad to have our one favorite rep get in when most likely they'd all sell reasonably well, at the VERY least

If Nintendo learned anything from Corrin (and I'm not sure they did), it was to de-emphasize Fire Emblem characters, not neglect/obscure RPG protagonists with swords, one of the most universal character archetypes in Japanese video games.

I mean... the sheer fact that he was designed by Toriyama almost makes it hard to ignore that he looks anime (this shouldn't be surprising honestly).
Not necessarily like "other" anime swordsmen, but still like an anime swordsman.
You may see beyond that because of your experiences with the character and series...
But I guarantee you, for those who don't know Erdrick or DQ, their first though will probably be along the lines of "he looks like Goku with a sword".

Because it’s stupid to think a character from a 1988 game is a shill pick. It’s like if they added Caeda and people complained she’s shilling Fire Emblem Three Houses.

How is it stupid to think Eddrick is a shillpick if the biggest reason he gets in is that Square wants to push Dragon Quest? If you want Ederick in, be my guest but yeesh. It's shouldn't be so hard to realize why he would be.

If Nintendo learned anything from Corrin (and I'm not sure they did), it was to de-emphasize Fire Emblem characters, not neglect/obscure RPG protagonists with swords, one of the most universal character archetypes in Japanese video games.
Still doesn't change the fact that you could almost call the "no more anime swordsmen a literal moment" in Smash right now

Like I said earlier in this thread (the previous page to be exact)
"If I got money for each time I've heard "God I'm so sick about these anime swordsmen" during the time of speculating for the base roster, be it at GameStop where I jumped in for time to time, visiting friends outside of my town and go to a GameStop there, local tournaments of Smash 4, being outside the country looking for games etc... I would be a very rich man right now."

Like I said to Good Grief above. If you want Ederick in, more power to you, and I'm happy for you if he will. But look around you and you will see that Ederick wouldn't go over as easy as you seem to think

Likely not happening. I doubt Nintendo is going to double dip on any third party, let alone Square Enix. Sora might happen, but I'll admit that's me holding futile hope.

Anything thinking that Dragon Quest's inclusion bodes well for another Square Enix character is in for massive disappointment.

A) Well yes. But the line has to be drawn sometime. And I would personally hold Yuji Horii accountable for not doing his best to have DQ appeal to the west if he didn't get a character in Smash. So if he's Dead serious about it, then we should expect one. Not saying his likely, but the idea shouldn't be too controversial in the first place.

B) They're businesses. Dragon Quest will probably be more important to Nintendo shareholders both financially and culturally/emotionally. They're pretty much part of the family wether people like it or not.
Sora doesn't have that going for him, heck, he's not even 100% Square-Enix.

C) Yes, yes, I know that. I was a fan of FE, but I got FE swordsman fatigue which led to me to dislike the series. I blame it for the general anome-swordsman hate in general.

D) Because Sakurai has been pretty clear on his stance for anime/manga characters.

E) I know what you're saying here, and maybe I'm biased, but I think Toriyama's style is nothing like your typical anime designs. Just like for example, Rumiko Takahashi's , Ozamu Tezuka's or Hayao Miyazaki's styles are so disctinctive.

So... I think it should get a little more credit than that... He'd be designed by an anime legend.

I get why people would be pissed.
Which is why I hope we get 2 S-E characters regardless.

Personally, I don't expect him to be playable, but if he is, I wouldn't be surprised. Hyped? You bet your life I would be. But not surprised. It would have been about time already, if anything.
Just hoping people get to appreciate why it's important to videogame history.

I don't particularly want Erdrick. I'm not in the camp for any of these Square characters really. But I think the community's fear of "anime" characters is not only ridiculous but blown way out of proportion. Doesn't matter how big or important the character is, people will latch onto that complaint until the end of time. Just look at the complaints at Cloud. Nobody at Nintendo, least of all Sakurai, probably notices or cares about this complaint.

While I hope that the DLC isn't just normal looking humanoids for variety's sake, that has nothing to do with a fear of "anime" characters like some have.

But that isn't to say that a reveal elsewhere is entirely out of the question either. Cloud was revealed in the most ho-hum event possible.
Cloud didn't matter. They could have revealed him using a 1950's slide projector in a Burger King restroom and it would have still been one of the biggest game announcements of 2015. Erdrick being a cold reveal, especially after the grand introduction they gave Joker who was just kinda wanted, would be a stark difference. Sure, they could do a regular Direct but, as other people have said, it'd either have to be a Japanese exclusive Direct or paired with a Western pick to go over well.

Still doesn't change the fact that it will be all things considered. I would argue that it will be even worse then Corrin since Nintendo will show that they care more about promoting someone else franchise then adding an actual fan favorite thinking about commercials over fanbase you know.

Also, Dragon Quest isn't 100% Square either, so I don't see what this has to do with Soras chances.

D) Because Sakurai has been pretty clear on his stance for anime/manga characters.
Trust me, I know. But do you really think general Smash players will care about that if they show that they have gotten an Akira Toriyama creation? Especially them that fanatically wants Goku in no matter what? Ps, I don't want Goku in, I just know how people would react.

E) I know what you're saying here, and maybe I'm biased, but I think Toriyama's style is nothing like your typical anime designs. Just like for example, Rumiko Takahashi's , Ozamu Tezuka's or Hayao Miyazaki's styles are so disctinctive.
I get what you mean, especially as someone that is a Fire Emblem fan and is constantly annoyed that people think every FE character looks the same. But the fact still remains that the general players would just scream "F YOU why more anime swordfighters"

The difference between Cloud and Ederick is that he is an icon worldwide, + didn't get in because they wanted to push a franchise that's not even Nintendo exclusive. Heck Joker got massive complains because he looked like yet another anime character and you expect Ederick who could easily end up as an anime sword fighter that pretty much no one in the west knows off to not be hated upon like crazy? My apologies, but you are looking in the wrong direction if you think Ederick wouldn't go over badly.

How many consumers would actively hate Erdrick, though, out of the 10M+ adopters of Smash Ultimate? They may be confused by him but the hate would be mostly confined to a couple of websites for hardcore fans - /v/, SmashBoards, Reddit, etc. If a character like Roy can develop a massive fanbase despite his game never coming to America, I don’t suspect Erdrick will be especially hated outside of the super fans like us.

Shulk was revealed in a Japanese only 3DS Nintendo Direct, so there's a precedent for a Japanese only reveal. The Game Awards also bodes well for region-focused reveals as it's primarily an American event.
The fact that "season 2" was talked about before Joker was even revealed kind of gives testament to how a lot of people have really low expectations for DLC for this game. The current atmosphere is pessimistic which is part of the reason I keep arguing here because most of the fanbases have taken their lawn chairs back to their minivans and gone home. Expectations for first party characters have all but bottomed out beyond potential shill characters already and people are largely leaning into most of the third party characters being ads. A bit dramatic but "hope" is kind of a corpse right now as far as character speculation goes outside a handful of characters.
So then what's the point of your argument?

Are you arguing for hope? If so, the pessimistic and cynical tone of your argument doesn't convey that at all, and it seems like you're bashing on Dragon Quest and Square Enix moreso than arguing for any sort of hope.

Are you arguing against hope? If so, why? You said it yourself that expectations are at an all time low, so why beat a dead horse? Regardless, the tone of your argument and use of exaggeration advocates more for despair than against hope. There's a clear difference between the two as one leads to bitter resentment whereas the other leads to realistic expectations, with the latter being preferred.

Low expectations aren't a bad thing; having low expectations leads to low disappointment. The fanbase was on track for that until the Grinch hoax skyrocketed hopes, and fans have similarly looked into Joker's reveal as a scapegoat for their wildest dreams when in reality that's simply not the case.

Surely your argument has to be doing something else because it's not about hope.

I think it would make sense to reveal a character now but not show gameplay like Joker. Having two characters revealed but without gameplay and a release date gives Nintendo the Q1 and Q2 directs to expand on the characters. It'd probably go something like this:
  • November 2018: The Plant reveal, gameplay, release date
  • December 2018, Joker reveal at TGAs, Erdrick reveal at Jump Festa 2019
  • Q1 & Q2 2019: Joker and Erdrick gameplay, release dates
  • E3 2019: Fighter 3 and Fighter 4 reveals, Fighter 3 gameplay and release date
  • Q3 & Q4 2019: Fighter 4 gameplay and release date, Fighter 5 reveal
  • Q1 2020: Fighter 5 gameplay and release date
I wouldn't be surprised if Erdrick comes with gameplay unlike Joker though. There's room for variability in Q1 & Q2 2019 for Erdrick's reveal, gameplay, and release date.

What do you mean "general players?" GameFAQs and 4chan? Those places are salt mines and will never be happy. A couple of trolls and frat boys will be mad about no Goku, but again, that's a minority.

I understand that the Smash Bros. fanbase is one of the most immature of them all, and people would certainly be mad and disappointed, but not for those reasons.

I'm speaking of personal experience, working at Gamestop, talking to people about Smash, being on video game shops such as Gamestop in other countries talking about Smash, local tournaments, persons I meet in school etc on top of the seeing comments online.

More often then not I've heard "Goku would be awesome because he is Goku".

Edit - Heck, I saw an article at Kotaku campaigning for Goku as Smash 4 DLC during the ballot time who' article writer got salty that he didn't get in. Here is the link to prove it https://kotaku.com/lets-try-to-get-goku-in-smash-bros-guys-1695148439
