I’ll admit, watching Tim Rogers’ review of Dragon Quest 11 really makes me appreciate a DQ character more. Watch it, it’s a pretty good video imo.
Here's the video in question:
Hitagi's leaks are fake. He outright claimed that there will be no Atlus characters.
The misinformation in this statement makes me sad.

From Hitagi himself:
As far as all the other non-SE characters, I said no because I actually haven't heard anything of them being a character or they have been de-confirmed. I want to make that very clear.
Hitagi didn't hear about Atlus characters, he said no. That doesn't mean he's wrong.

I want it to be the other Toriyama-designed spiky haired boy more than anyone but... Erdrick is happening now boyz
ill hope for a red haired alt at the very least
Crono is among my "pipe dream characters" (aka characters that will very likely never never make it as a playable character in Smash Bros.), so I can relate.

I do agree that the writing on the wall is that Erdrick is going to be the Squre-Enix character with Luminary as either an alt or an echo.

Honestly, I would love a Dragon Quest character to make it in, but I admit that these anti-DQ arguments absolutely make me hope it to happen for the reactions. :p

Erdrick is fine. Not my preferred pick from the seven, but he's fine.

If he does end up being the pick, it would make me wonder why they wouldn't pick someone more recognizable, like Eight or Slime.

I really wish that the possibility of a Dragon Quest rep wasn't seen so negatively by some people in the Smash community. They're lovely games that absolutely deserve more recognition, give things a chance instead of just dismissing it for not being exactly what you want.
And even if you have no interest in it, at least don't be a big downer about it if it does happen. I don't have much interest in Persona, but I'm still happy for all the people who wanted Joker!

The more I think about it, the more I’m warming up to almost everybody on the list. Why can’t Sakurai just make all the characters playable, every single one of them?

DaybreakHorizon DaybreakHorizon But it's not just ME, that's the issue. Dragon Quest in Smash is super alienating. The main arguments made are legacy in Japan and check boxes so at the end of the day you have the third party equivalent of Wii Fit Trainer that people actually have to pay for. Imagine if people had to pay for Lucas in Brawl. Imagine if people had to pay for Game and Watch in Melee. Hell, people still resent Corrin despite his character concept being cool AF specifically because virtually no one asked for him. Nobody cares about the history aside from the die hard fans, which we've long since established are in Japan with the 93% of the copies bought over three decades. Plus, there's clearly SE characters that have much more appeal world wide that people actually want so it's a slight on a ton of fronts.

Like I said earlier, it's a character choice that all but ignores a variety of fans and is a 98% corporate pick. In short, it's a shill. It's an enormous shill and we've simply been dancing around the word for the past couple of hours but how else do you describe a character with no personality and is through and through the silent sword using JRPG protagonist trope that's predominantly added to sell future games? Again, people were mad about Corrin because they didn't know who he was, imagine a character that hasn't been playable in a Western game since the early 2000's on the Gameboy Color? If your character requires even long time gamers for most of the world to go to Google to try to figure out who they are and then expect people to buy them, that's a problem.
Yeah. DLC characters are supposed to be the type that are recognizable enough that lots of people would buy them. In Smash 4, we had 3 popular returning cut veterans (Mewtwo, Lucas, and Roy), 3 popular 3rd-party characters (Ryu, Cloud, and Bayonetta), and a new Nintendo character (Corrin).

As a Wii Fit main, you kind of just have to suck it up. It's going to go over about as well as a box of bees punted into a nursery but that's just the way it is. You do you and all that.

From Hitagi himself:

Hitagi didn't hear about Atlus characters, he said no. That doesn't mean he's wrong.
The dude literally claimed when someone asked about Banjo that he wasn't on the list, indicating that he knew the list Nintendo was giving Sakurai (this was before he backpedaled hard), and has acted like he has known pretty much the entire list from the get-go. Xenother has pretty much the same sources as Hitagi which is stated.. so why should I listen to him then too? Hitagi behaves more like Lolz18 did without even having something right about Smash, to begin with.. The fact that Hitagi didn't even start to talk wild and broad about Smash until Vergeben claimed he was good makes it even more like he is someone that wants to ride the tail of fame that Vergeben started more than anything.

He's not worth listening to when it comes to Smash, and have yet to give us one inkling of reasoning too as of right now. PS, that excuse when it comes to the Atlus part is almost adorably facepalm worthy

As for how I feel on Erdrick, its the same as Joker. Neutral. I have never played Dragon Quest, though I understand its importance to gaming, in particular, JRPGs. I do not care one way or the other.

I do think he is the most likely Square-Enix character now though.

I don’t know man, last time I released a bunch of bees into a nursery things went great. You could barely hear the screams!

Many had a meltdown over Joker and started to say stuff like "NO! EVERY CHARACTER WILL BE A GUEST!", "JOKER JUST OPENS DOORS FOR GOKU!", "Remember when Smash was Nintendo All-Stars? Pepperidge Farms remembers". Asking for chill reactions is futile.

Hope's dead, my man. Sword Steve is coming to a Switch near you 2019.
People are going to like Erdrick despite not knowing who he is due to him looking like a DBZ character. The only people who will be upset with him will be a segment of the "core" Smash Bros. fanbase.

Because continuing the joke.

When it comes to my opinion of the characters on the list, I don't hate any of them(At worst I am neutral), I just have characters I want in more than others.
I’m the one who decides what’s funny and what’s not around here bub.
Also pretty much same for the second part.

Even if that's why they add Eldrick; I'd argue Crono does that job lightyears betters all across the board.

I will concede that you're right; Dragon Quest is alienating within the core fanbase. That being said, my original statement still stands. Just because you and other fans don't like it, doesn't mean others will.

The resentment over Corrin has largely faded, as has that of Bayonetta, who attracted similar ire because she was the "Ballot winner." Similarly, 1 of 4 remaining DLC slots being given to a legendary Japanese game series instead of character x or y who's wanted by the core fanbase will cause a stir initially, but will largely die down as people grow accustomed to the character.
Him saying no is the DEFINITION of wrong. That's as cut and dry a statement as you can get, chief.

No. I literally just proved that Hitagi's no meant nothing. You can refuse to acknowledge that, but it doesn't change the fact that Hitagi said no because he didn't hear anything, and did not say that an Atlus character wouldn't be in the game.

Personally; I don't want someone who think's I'm an abomination to have content in my Smash game *shrug*.
You can turn the songs off. Or you could just, you know, not buy the DLC.

Really though, you shouldn't dismiss a whole franchise just because the composer has ****ty worldviews.

Sakurai re-stated that a few days ago. Smash is defined by its gameplay and not by Nintendo's characters. But here we are, people mourning for a topic not really worth discussion after over a decade of guest characters.

I was hoping the DQ character would have been Slime as I've been watching That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime this season and I'm realpy enjoying it.

Goku with a Sword™ can only get so much mileage. Basically equating a DLC pick to jingling car keys in front of baby really doesn't help the overall narrative and kind of cements the character is a literal who to a vast majority of people. "It's not Goku but it looks like Goku" will probably be the main selling point though so you've got me there.

If he really meant that, he should have said that from the beginning since he knows that Smash fanbase read into every word that supposed leakers said. So sorry but I ain't buying his excuse.

Alright bought the fighter pass; my dude. Even if I don't buy it though; Millions will be. Building that asshole Bigot's platform higher and higher; Nintendo netting him millions in Cash for his MIDI's

Fair enough.

Still, there's more to Dragon Quest than the composer and his ****tiness.

The difference in Joker and Erdrick is Joker brings something that no one else can.

Erdrick might as well be another Fire Emblem character who uses magic and swords and the like because he really isn't going to bring much of anything new to the series other than ''I'm here because Dragon Quest is iconic."

I'd rather we get someone who represents a new famous series and also brings something new that only they can do.

That's actually the downfall of Dragon Quest in my opinion. Yes, it wrote the formula, but because of that, fighters in Smash already do what they'd most likely do.

Anything the composer does is going to overshadow DQ for me tbh. I wouldn't be this against DQ getting in if he wasn't involved, honestly. DQ would still be anti hype, personally, but I wouldn't be legit MAD like I would right now.

Okay, I do not think Erdrick is being revealed on the 22nd.
I don't know why Xenother brought that up, it feels way too early, even if I do think Erdrick is the Square Enix rep.
