Tbh, I really doubt we're getting Luminary and Aluncia alts.

It's one thing with Erdrick having both male and female alts, but having 3 different characters that don't seem closely connected to one another in one slot is the one thing I doubt about the leak.

I think it's just color references.

Interesting. If they were all simply colors, hopefully we get

Erdrick (m) (Modern colors) + (f) (snes colors)
Eight (m)
Nine (f)
Luminary (m)
AnaLucia (f)
Madason (m)
Sofia (f)
Sounds great to me, But since dq9 is a character creator, I would maybe put Solo there instead, so we can get him and Sofia :)
(if it's to get another female one, though, i'd be ok with that ;p)

That would be cool too (although default female nine is a pink haired angel) And with Erdrick’a hairstyle, he’d basically look like human form Frog from the Chrono Trigger ending. :D

So any particular stage for other characters from the 5ch leak?
Hangar for Doomguy?
Brooklyn for Ryu Hayabusa? Or that mountain from Ng1?

I’ll take your words for it that Mementos is lame then. Haven’t played the game after all.
I do wonder how effective this hypothetically hypothetical DQ promotion will actually be. I noticed some people were already intrigued by the DQ content in the direct, so perhaps Erdrick is a way to encourage those people to finally take the leap. Interdasting stuff.
I just wanna jump in real fast and say that Mementos can be super sick if they take inspiration from the later levels of it which look totally cool or from the title screen which has a super cool subway aesthetic. It could also switch between the real world and Mementos, which would be great.

Yeah, the casino is my number one pick, but I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth and Mementos looks like a combination between a train station and the vessels of a heart so it's genuinely super cool. You just spend a lot of the game in it so it's sometimes hard as a person who has played the game to remember that it was always pretty cool.

I do like that dq9 design, though they'd have to make a bigger version than the game's one (which wouldnt be too hard..)
Also, by Madason I'm assuming dq5 right? I'm not sure if he'd be in just because he has wind spells instead of the lightning and fire the other ones have, not that it has to matter, considering ness and lucas, but if he wouldn't make it in, It might be the same deal for Alef (aka dq1 hero), which could be another good pick.

side note, someone could post the news about the data in the erdrick thread if they wanted to.

It wouldn't be very different from Bowser Jr..

Does Luminary have much personality in dq11?

I'm of two minds regarding the leak. On one hand, it makes it seem like those costumes are just color references. On the other, a big big rumor that has been around since before Brave was that the Square character "took more work than any DLC character before" and that insiders were being told they were called "Hero". If we are getting multiple Heroes a la Koopalings, that would fit.

Actually, was it ever specified that it was specifically the Square character that was going to take more work than any before them? I know that was said to apply to one of the characters of the pass, but I don't recall it referring specifically to the Square rep.

Honestly, my memory sometimes has weird gaps in it so you may be right. I do remember it specifically being about the Square character but it could have applied to any of them.

At least with Bowser Jr. and the crew, it made sense since they are the Koopa Kids, and have been treated as a team together and have been shown to at least do the things Bowser Jr. has and would do.

It's not even Luminary that kills it, it's Alunica. You have Erdrick, Luminary, and Alunica, who all come from games that aren't connected to another other than Erdrick being a legend in DQ11. At least I can sort of see Luminary as alt, but you're gonna add Aluncia too? It's kinda random.

Where was this heard? It's the first time I'm hearing about it.

I mean, the koopalings had differences between them. they just decided to stack them in smash on for variety. Same can apply for dq heroes. So long as they make Erdrick good enough.
Unlike a lot of games, Dragon Quest follows a lot of similar patterns. The monsters are always the same, the heroes have a lot of similar stuff. I dont have trouble picturing it working. Anyway, besides the leak we havent heard of anlucia much besides that. I dont know what the truth is, but im sure nintendo would do a good job with it, even with alt heroes.

Only ones I'd put ahead are 4's hero and maybe Madason. Eight is still top 3 on his worst days.
Yeah, well.. makes sense that we like different ones.
I like some designs that aren't from the main games too, but I think they'd have less chance of showing up.

I'd post in the Erdrick thread but I'm the last one who posted there so.

Not sure if this was a good place to post this, but I figured since this thread is typically busier than the Erdrick thread I'd get more views here so here we go:

Finally decided I wanted to make another try to get into the Dragon Quest series. I have tried this multiple times over the last many years but each time I get bored and stop part of the way through. This time, since I concede that Erdrick is the likely DLC pick, I want to make a serious attempt at playing the DQ series. I'm still not thrilled about the idea of Erdrick being in Smash but I want to at least give this series a fair shake before he gets in.

So I was wondering if some of our resident Dragon Quest fans could let me know of the best ways to get into the series? Should I just start from the beginning, or is there a most recommended entry that I should start with? IIRC Dragon Quest is like Final Fantasy in that most of the entries in the series are disconnected, right? I still have my old Gameboy Color from back in the day, and I know there are GBC ports of the first few games in the series so I was thinking of ordering some copies off of eBay and starting there. Are the GBC ports of those games good? Are there better versions of those games that I can play? Also - from what I've seen, DQ10 still isn't localized in the west, right? 11 is coming to Switch soon, so maybe I'll pick that up if I enjoy the other entries in the series (not gonna start with that one since it's like 60 dollars lol).

I know several entries in the series were either made on the DS or were ported to it (I think 4 and 5?) - are those good versions of the games, or are the originals better? Personally I wasn't really a fan of the visual style of some of Square's other DS ports/remakes (the look of the FFIV remake makes me irate) so if I can play the originals that would be cool. Are the 3DS ports of VII and VIII any good?

This question has probably been asked before so if someone knows of a previous write-up that has been posted, a link would be appreciated. Otherwise, I would really appreciate any advice anyone can give me! I am approaching this series with an open mind so I hope I can finally enjoy it. I'm super nostalgic for Game Boy games so I'm kind of excited to play the GBC versions of the first three games, if you guys recommend them. I feel like I would probably enjoy the GBC versions of these games more than any other versions just for the nostalgia of playing a "new" Game Boy game for the first time.

I really want to like this series. I have the semi-fond memory of playing the demo disc of DQ VIII that I got from the monthly Shonen Jump magazine. Younger me was excited because "It lookth like da dwagon ball!!!". I want to actually play all the way through several games in the series before deciding if I like it or not, rather than just half-assing my way through part of one of the games and stopping. If I decide I don't like it after that, fine, but hey maybe I'll be converted into a fan.

Thanks in advance fam

Mementos is just a large random place, and I dont know if it'd be considered defining for persona 5, for me it does say something about this new data, because it could've been a lot of other things, even if it had a chance to be in.
It might be bland in some ways, but it depends which parts they use for it. Here's a bit of footage from the depths.

Bro put that **** in spoilers.

Too me Dragon Quest is best enjoyed in whatever order you feel like 1,2,3 are connected but you can enjoy them however you choose 4,5,6 are connected but loosely so if you start there pick one you think looks interesting 7,8,9 are really good to not connected as far as I know so you can just hop right in theres 10 which doesn't matter because it's an mmo and we won't ever get that and theres 11 which if you wanna play that wait for the switch version it's the best version and it's not even out yet.

This question has, in fact, been asked a bunch of times and I've even answered it already, but I can't find my post. Instead, I'll give you a short version.

The best Dragon Quest games to start off with are DQ4, DQ5, DQ8, and DQ11. The best versions of DQ4 and DQ5 are the DS or Android / iOS ones. For DQ8, it's a choice between the PS2 original (nicer menus, orchestral soundtrack) or the 3DS version (portability, extra content). DQ11 is getting an extremely good rerelease for the Nintendo Switch sometime this fall, with orchestral music and extra story content, but if you wanna play it now then the PS4 and Steam versions are fine too.

Of those four games, I personally like 5 the best. If possible, I highly recommend you give it a try.

As for the other games, you mentioned that you were curious about the Game Boy Color versions of the first 3 games. They're fine, but the amount of the overworld you can see is smaller than other versions, and the battle menu has trouble fitting so much text on a tiny screen.

Either way, I personally don't think the original three games should be your first, they're best experienced after you're already familiar with the series through later entries. This is because the later ones do a good job of making you care about the characters and the overall story, whereas if you have trouble appreciating the world exploration gameplay of the originals, then you won't enjoy them as much. This, again, is why I recommend starting with Dragon Quest 5. The story and characters in that game are just magical.

Last rule of playing a DQ game is to stick with it. The early hours are always slow, but eventually you reach a point where things get really interesting and / or exciting. I hope this post helped!

I enjoy the GBC graphics too. I still remember playing Dragon Quest Monsters on gameboy and actually still like some of the visuals more than the 3d ones.
I also like the gbc ones better than nes, but that said, I think the ds ports are great, It's cartoony and looks a lot better. You could try any or look at youtube gameplay videos to see if it makes a difference.

You can play 1, 2 or 3 for gbc if you really want to start there.
4,5,& 6 are on ds. And yeah 7 & 8 are on 3ds. All good ports. I dont think you can go wrong with any.

I was going to respond, but TheYungLink TheYungLink already did a great job at that.

I will say that Dragon Quest 5 was the first one I played, and it's what got me into the franchise. I recommend starting with DQ5 as well.

I would honestly just wait for DQXI:S. It's probably the easiest DQ game to get into and also one of the best. If you have a 3DS DQ8 is also a good starting point. I would not recommend starting with any of the original Trilogy or VII. IV and V are also decent starting points but not as "modern" as VIII and XI are.

Hey, MyBrokenLuigi (no, not LuigiThePresident even though they seem broken as well (hang in there!)), I found my original post. Took some digging but here's the link.
Can I be broken, too, even though I'm not a Luigi? LTP and I are broken for very similar reasons anyway. :drshrug: Woo, brokenhearted squad!

>Not much
>Literally the penultimate ****ing dungeon that drops a load of revelations in the plot of the game including introducing the Final Boss
I hadn't thought about it like that, But you're right, I'll be more aware of that in the future :)

Maybe I missed that post. It was a pretty good run-down. I think the gbc ones can be cool too, if they're used to old gbc games (and rpgs), but I think you're right about it for most of the time.

Edit: I actually replied to your old post, so I guess I just forgot about some parts of it.

There's also some guides online. lots of people suggest 5. Some say 4 because there's different stories to get into at first. And of course 8 keeps coming back.
I wonder why dq6 doesnt get mentioned as much.

It's now almost been over a week since his last post on Gamefaqs. Funnily enough, the day if the direct. Before it came and did that number on his domination over the speculation scene of course.

The term "soon" has left the building regarding the situation. He's definitely pulling his old routine again he got stuff wrong constantly. And also like Soul Caliber 6.

Even if he does come back, it's clear something went terribly wrong that he can't backtrack talk his way out of this time.
Verge has still been sending DMs to trusted people. I've been informed on what all happened. I also seen somebody else who DM'd him explain it over on GameFAQs. Long story short, the things he got wrong seem to have stemmed from just one source, not all of his sources were telling him that information. I assume he'll make a public post clarifying everything later. It all has to do with how he vets his information, because he did have other sources telling him TRUE info before the direct as well (he was told 3 weeks before the direct that the 2D link's awakening zelda game was coming).

On another subject, I have some more datamining stuff to share with you guys: "Brave's" stage is listed as L02. This is NOT a name. It means his stage has a low poly version for 8-player smash. This means Brave's stage is labor intensive, like an overly beautiful stage or a large scroller.

Brave's stage isn't named. It was just found in recycled low-poly code. Really we are EXTREMELY lucky to have found this stuff, it's all just recycled leftover code. That's why we won't really find anything else. This is all from 1.0 BTW, jack and brave were entirely removed in 2.0.
