I'm gonna assume that they're sticking with the formula that works and will refine it more and more with each game while adding in new things. Maybe they'll do different game play for different characters like in Sonic Adventure.

Just want to throw this out there, Modern Chemical Plant's song sped up by 20% (while maintaining the same pitch) is positively DELICIOUS.
Also, the Guitar/Bass in the Modern Sky Sanctuary theme is different from the one in the Genesis era trailer. It sounds a bit less actiony.

On another note, I can't pick up my preorder until Thursday. :<

Idk, I mean at the end of every genre the game does end up being way different than their predecessor. SA1 was the first in 3D, and I mean actual 3D, not crappy Sonic 3D Blast 3D. Sonic 06 was the first HD game (and it did introduce the fact that the consoles can now support Sonic running REALLY fast, and by that I mean the mach speed sections) and if Sonic Unleashed counts, it introduced the ability to spam the X or square button to make Sonic run really fast. If you ask me something tells me they're going to deviate from the usual formula again, I'm just not sure with what since Sonic is gonna have to run even faster
