Pondering questions
I've been gone for a while, but I might try my hand at spriting again.

Here's my first submission:

Ah screw it, the alpha channel isn't working. Here's a new one without an alpha channel: Suicune recolor

And here's an earlier one I did

I really didn't have an idea for a recolor so I just changed Venusaur to a more jungle theme.

Hold on, something is wrong with the alpha channel.
How much more EXP do you need?

Some more re-colors I've made due to boredom. Sorry if I'm posting too much sprites, but I can get impatient at times.

...Well, there it is. I don't think I did good or great...but I don't think I did bad. Besides, i'm here to learn how to get better, so... review please...
Hey, well, you know the recoloring part, but you gotta remember some key things:
Always recolor the shades of the color. The whole Delibird isn't just one color, it's probably like 3 different reds, right? So, you should use three different oranges to recolor it, not just one.

Also, make sure to recolor the outline or edges of a sprite as well.

Ok. Thanks for not being so critical. Btw, sorry if this sounds noobish...but... where will I find 3 different oranges? Would I find it from Pokemon sprites or will I create it...? Just wondering... hope it dosen't sound TO noobish... :embarrass

Use whatever orange suits it best. Just don't hurt peoples' eyes using bright, clashing, neon colors.

No, it's fine, I'll help you.
The different colors are for the "shades" of the Pokemon. Depending on how light hits a color, it will be either "brighter" or "darker" than the "base color". Therefore, you need to pick a base color (like orange) and get as many lighter and darker shades of that color as you need (It varies from sprite to sprite).

Here is a quick tutorial I just made:

End result:

Just keep practicing, or try practicing on simpler Pokemon, like Marill, Psyduck, and VOLTORB!

anyway, should all the 'teachers' get together and figure out this organization thing and agree to it and set it in place? Time and date would be nice:)

I have a easier way to recolour Pokemon without going through every single sprite. I'm sure most of you guys know this here, but since it's a spriting school, I'm sure some people don't.

Basically, start out like Meta-Kirby showed you. List every color of a Pokemon, then match those colors with a set of new ones that you choose. Once you have all the colors listed out, use the color extracting tool and click on a color from the original sprite. Then, use the same tool and right click on the new color that matches up with the original color you chose.

Now, if you look at your color toolbar, you'll see that the two color blocks that show which color you are using are filled with the two colors; the original color being on top, and the new color you chose on the bottom block.

Grab the eraser tool and go over to the base sprite you would like to recolour. Hold the right click button and rub your mouse all over the sprite. The original color of the sprite will then be replaced with the new color you chose. Continue these steps for all the colors you matched up.

Now, instead of going through every sprite and recolouring it, you can use this method to make things a lot easier.

Hope I helped. =3

Yep, I'm pretty sure most of us use that technique (though, ever since I started using Photoshop for spriting I unchecked the "contiguous" box for the paint bucket and just fill in with that, works like a charm).

An alternate technique which is slightly less versatile, but is REALLY good if you're mass-recoloring;

First, make sure that you select the marquee tool and select the lower box that appears under all of the tools. Using the eyedropper, make the color you want to recolor TO the foreground color (left-click). Make the color you want to replace the background color (right-click). Select the entire document with Ctrl + A (or whatever method you wish to use), or if it's a slightly smaller area, select it manually with the marquee tool. Cut what you've selected in some way -- I prefer Ctrl + X, but you can do it through the menu and whatnot. The area you've cut should leave behind a box of the color that you are trying to replace. Once it's been cut, switch to the paint bucket and fill in the place from which you cut. Now, paste it back (Ctrl + V or your own method) and align it as it was before you cut it. Assuming all of your options are correct, all traces of the color you wanted to get rid of should be gone.
It seems a little complicated, but it's actually quite easy once you do it a couple of times. Personally though, unless I'm doing mass-recolors, I prefer the eraser method.

Hey all, long time no see. I'd like to join, even though I've done a fair bit of spriting already I heard that learning is fun. Can't guarantee my participation much though, study has got me pinned up against the wall most of the time, but thats Uni I spose...

So here is my recolour:

Wanted to put a bit of Aussie into the mix, so that's what he'd look like if he were down under...

Edit: I also wanted to see how my more family friendly seviper would go...would make a great birthday present for the kids (wanted him to be a green tree snake)

but the croc is the serious 1 i guess

I agree with this. Sorry I haven't been very active lately, I've just been a bit busy with life in general.

How's some time this Friday, on AIM?

Sounds good.

I'd be on from 4 to like 11 so any time in between that is fine with me.

I'll join. I'm now going to have a go at the recoloring thing.
EDIT: Done

Why wont the image work directly from photobucket?

You have to copy the one that says "IMG Code" and post it here. You have to use the IMG tags, but for some reason the URL you posted doesn't look right. Try getting the IMG tags right from your Album page.

At first I thought this looked pretty good, but when I zoomed in, I noticed one slight error. On 3 of the 4 limbs, you colored the "fingers" to a blue color, but on the left hand (with the most apparent fingers) you left them gray. You could either turn that one hand blue or turn the rest of them back to gray, but be sure to maintain consistency with all of the limbs :)
Other than that, the only personal "gripe" would be that the colors chosen don't really "go" together. Try to pick cool color combinations (Red/Orange/Yellow, Green and Blue, Brown and Red, Black and Yellow, Navy and White, et cetera) that go together instead of picking two colors that are just sorta random. Other than that, you got everything great, I especially appreciate that you recolored the outline as well, because a ton of beginners forget to do that!

This is a great recolor. The color choices (Army Green and Tangerine) really go well together and the outline was recolored as well. However, the lightest shade of green might just be a little TOO light. For example, right above the eye looks too bright. Other than that tiny error, yes, it's a great recolor.

This one, not AS good as the above, but still a little above average.. I undestand what you are trying to do with it and I applaud your efforts to try something new, but the colors you chose don't match even within the shades. The lighest shade of green (a sort of yellow-green color) doesn't go with the middle shade (Alpine Green) or the darker shade (Tree Green). Also, the lighest shade of blue doesn't go well, and it seems like there is some white there too, which probably doesn't belong.
Removing the fangs is hard to do, but you got it pretty well. The backside of the mouth has an odd shade of color, though. The outline of the "lightning bolt" on the chest is also too dark.

Overall, though, great job on both of them. Both have some flaws, but they both "try something different" and it's really great to see people venturing outside the box.

Overall, recolors aren't too hard....so really, there isn't much critique I could give on them. Once we all start getting into Fusions/Devamps/Revamps, THEN it'll be fun to critique because there is SO much to learn/discover/try in those styles. Recolors? Not so much, I mean, anyone could do them.

I'm mad I didn't see this until now . sign me up

I'll edit this with another, but here's one I very recently did: Pikakip

Mudkip in Pikachu's clothes. maybe not technically free recolor, but just wanted to get one out the for now.

BTW: I use Paint.net for everything. It's even easier for transparancies. just take the wand, set the amaunt for 0%, highlight the background, and press delete.

EDIT: French Vileplume

So funny story. I was just doing the top like a normal recolor. Iunno, maybe thought the yellow was more realistic, or just couldn't think of anything (although when I look back it looks like some previous shinies). Then I could decide on the body, so I just thought of making it the American flag colors. but horizontally like this, it looks more Like the French flag. body doesn't really relate to top. I'll probably do another, this body was just so crazy it wasn't really that good.

I think the trick is getting the right amount of messed up pixels, and not getting in too much. Also you have to use a lot of the dwithering effect instead of nice shading, and of course you have to just find the colours of the Pokemon you're devamping if it wasn't one from the generation you're devamping to.

I think devamping to R/B/Y is super hard...you have to scratch the Pokemon to look really wierd and almost alien.

Maybe its like a progressive challenge type deal.
For example, all the challenges are currently already made and they are all posted at once and you work your way up the challenges, and you recieve certain points for completing certain challenges and your points are decided obviously on the quality of the sprite and they are kept and people are ranked according to this...
And obviously you cant do higher stage challenges till lower level challenges/sprites are completed satisfactorily.
This would allow people to move at their own pace and skill level and allowing new people to enter at any moment.

Example:

Challenge 1: Recolour any Pokemon Potential Points: 5
Challenge 2: Devamp any Pokemon Potential Points: 10
Challenge 3: Retype any 2nd Gen Pokemon Potential Points: 12

Rankings:
User1: 22/27
User2: 21.5/27
User3: 17/27
User4: 12/15
User5: 3/5
