How can I make it transparent using GIMP?
Zook said:
Normally, I first completely finish my sprite in Paint. Save it, then open it up in GIMP.

In GIMP, go to Layers-> Transparency-> Add Alpha Channel. Next, take the magic wand/fuzzy selection tool and click on all the space you want to make transparent. Once that's highlighted, go to Edit-> Clear. If you do this correctly, the white background should take on a grey, checker-pattern.

Remember to get all the empty spaces between wings and stuff, too! And save it as a .png.
I'm going to put this on the OP.

There. That was really annoying to do. Can I have some critiques now? Also, Zook, what does adding an alpha channel do? I need to figure out how this stuff works.

How were you doing it? Adding an alpha channel lets you make it so that when you erase something, it turns transparent rather than white. But for the GIMP thing, just press CTRL+ K to delete the selected area/color completely, rather than using the eraser tool to erase.

Here's my re-color.
It's Magneton.

I made the magnets more traditional looking, gave him gold hardware and a silver body.

GIMP is acting dumb for me so got rid of it and decided not to use it. Would that mean I'll be at a disadvantage for having a black background or no?

Also, make my name Xace on the OP Zook.
Or did you do that on purpose Zook to annoy me?

Souped up version. Now with moar shading (I think.). Can you re-review it?
Oh god....

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever use Paint Default Colors. They are terrible and they make sprites look terrible and horrific grandmothers will come from the Netherlands to devour your Gall Bladders.

With that being said....this is a bad sprite. Always choose your own colors and make the "shades" less drastic.

You don't have to be so **** vitriolic. Are you trying to make me feel like trash? You could just say "Don't use paint's colors, they're not good." >_> I'll go change the colors -.-

EDIT: Here. Took out the banana yellow and the turquoise.

No, I'm trying to make you a better spriter, and I'm telling you, don't use Paint Colors, because it's the most horrible of things to do while spriting. I'm not going to sugar coat things like other members will, that's NOT how I was taught to sprite, either.
It was a bad sprite to begin with, and now you are fixing it to make it better.
I'm not trying to make you feel like trash, but I'm trying to help.

And the middle head part still has some shading problems, the colors don't go too well together, but the legs are good if you chose a different color.

Alright, just don't be condescending. You may have a lot of experience with this, but I'm not an idiot.

How does the sword design on his arms look?
I know you aren't an idiot o.o' I never said you were. Inexperience =/= Stupidity, I can tell you are very smart.

The sword looks great, man. I really like it.

Sorry for the white, my computer with photoshop doesn't have internet at the moment.

I had to make it in paint and without a mouse

I used articuno for the flames and marowhack for the body

Edit:
LOL, as long as you are using the same background for this site as I am, you can pretend this one has transparency...

...It saved as a JPEG for some reason even though I specifically saved it as a bitmap...

Well M-Kirby, it sort of implies that when you're that belligerent. That was the first sprite I ever messed with and I was proud of it, and then I felt like you kind of shredded a piece of my soul.[/butthurt]

Next time I recolor, I'll try taking the colors from other sprites. That didn't occur to me at first.

Beastly Moltres, btw.

bringing it out of the mess.
Heh, that's a pretty cool idea.

One thing I notice, though, is that there seems to be some brown left; most noticeably around the outline, which makes it looks kind of awkward. Make sure to clean that up.

Also, I think there's a little too much contrast between the brightest green and the next darkest green. Try making it a little darker to even it out and make the shading blend in better.

Overall though, it is a good start. It's always a good idea to start with a concept in mind when it comes to picking a general recolor. A lot of the time, it's when you slap on colors that you just chose that they clash really badly, because you try to think outside of the box, resulting in thinking too far outside of the box, resulting in neon pink mixed with a forest green.

just a comparison.
darker green, darker red on the feathers instead of brown.
The second is SO much better, great correction, Grunt!
Hey guys, we are currently in the process of re-working this thread so that it's more organized into a better format or structure. Keep posting sprites, though, the transition will be seamless!

ROFL I HAVE NO LIFE

The shiny version of cornchic, AKA Foghornchic.
EDIT:
It seems photobucket is messing up with all the different pictures named cornchic, so the "comparison" is the same sprite now, lol.
Thank you guys.

Haha, interesting. You could've made the outline on the white parts a bit darker, though. Interesting idea, nonetheless.

And no, the comparison is different for sure. Check the lightest shade on the head, it's different. The second still looks better even if I'm crazy and I'm looking at the same sprite >_>

I like it but it's sorta hard to make out the body. Maybe use a different shade that doesn't screw with white or outline it a bit.

Other then that I like it :)

My re-submission. I think I got the outline mistake? Hopefully.

And this is something that was actually my original idea, but I had no idea what color scheme to use at the time, so I waited until I had it down. Behold, "G/S/C" recolor of Cyndaquil's Silver sprite.

If you think you see a couple of pixel errors around the outline of the flame, disregard them for grading. I left it there for a slightly more realistic effect, because it just seemed to sort of make it flow better. If you disagree or think I need more, however, still tell me.

Revamping is sort of hard. x_x

Revamping is more than just replacing the colors. You have to change the shading to a more Generation 4-esque type of shading. Therefore, you have only created a Silver Cyndaquil Recolor.

I'm not a judge or teacher or w/e, but I still want to say some stuff.

Re-posting this because I need advice. And it was ignored.
It's a good job of color replacing, everything looks clean and what not, but the colors look almost exactly like the shiny Pinsir, the horns are just a bit more orange.

in paint i messed with the colors some how so when i went to make it transparent it deleted part of the outline but next time i will make it transparent
lol IDK why, but i really like it. Minty.

O shi-, you're right. I didn't evn notice it until right now. I just picked the Heracross blue and Huntail fin orange because they'd look nice together. Also, the blue is a bit lighter I think.

Okay, so I was bored, and I thought I'd try again. I used the advice Master Zook gave me on shading, and I liked the result quite a bit.

It's a Flygon! (no rly)

Feedback plz!

****, that thing is awesome, LotM. Seriously, I really, really love the colors. I really don't see anything wrong with it.
Bravo.

Here's mine

I know I didn't change the ring area around the gem, but I really liked the color it was and it matched well with the rest of it. I think an important is knowing when not to overdue it.
