I think it has to do with the groups being a public-type membership or not. Could just have to do with individual permissions for each group.
Alright, thanks. Just curious.

I've never really written long posts before, but I plan to write a large guide very soon, so I want to know:

-is there a character limit for posts? The first post will be extremely huge.

-how do I use the show/hide feature? This would really help with organizing the guide.

-is there a way to make a picture show up smaller when I insert an image? I will use many images, but if they are too big, they really start to get in the way of the information. I use ImageShack for uploading btw.

I hope I'm in the right forum for this. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't believe that there is a character limit. Look at all character guides. Some are incredibly huge.

use [collapse=whatever] then {/collapse]

the only way to make an image smalelr is to do it yourself offline then upload it as a smaller image.

Because you can tell what's a bot and what's not.
Not really. I've seen many usernames that you would think to be an everyday user, Attempting to point out someone you think is a troll or bot and it turns out to be a normal member makes you look stupid, and in some cases, it's a bit prejudicial, especially if they get banned by an assumption.

I think what Dark Horse is suggesting is that we implement something like this:

Even so, that's not foolproof for stopping bots. It also may not load properly for certain users.

This is a guess, but if you go to some suspected-of-being-a-bot's profile, the would only be the statistics. No "about me", no "contact", no everything else.

Yes, that's what I was talking about.

Even though, it might be fool proof, it's better than just nothing.

And why doesn't it load properly on some peoples computers?

A Capacha(<--Spell check) Word Processing station won't really help us out with the trolls and such, but as for Spam Bots, it's something.

Wrong, i know lots of members that don't add anything to their profiles, not even an avatar, and they turn out to be everyday newcomers.

Again, it may prevent Spam Bots, but it won't keep us from getting the actually people that just join to troll, even the accounts that there is a human controlling the Advertisement, and actually registering themselves by filling in every selected field of Registration.

Some people have weird browser settings that may not allow the image to load. Besides, bots are pretty much banned immediately anyway, and as far as I can tell, we get them pretty rarely.

Plus, it would probably mean another huge vBulletin update to implement this.

huh, thought we had one of those.

And you can't stop human members from trolling, obviously. LP he said BOT filter not TROLL filter.

Only SWF staff is supposed to be answering questions. Why is this such a hard rule to follow?

@Kaostar: that's...a good question. i can only imagine that it would still affect the character count as it would without the collapse tags, i'll ask though.

Lucas, we obviously cannot know who the trolls will be, it's better to deal with them as they come.

I don't think Dark Horse is talking about trolls, but bots.

Argh double ninja'd.

But i'm pretty sure every human user has a contact page (where you can chose to VM or PM them)

LP, i'm talking about bots, not trolls.

I knew this already, but he's not explaining clear enough.
I get that Bots sign up automatically, with no input, but what about the humans that go through the time to sign up, copy paste advertisement and such?

But i'm pretty sure every human user has a contact page (where you can chose to VM or PM them)

I don't understand what you mean, because every user has a contact page.
New members don't have immediately active VMs, but that's no reason to segregate them out by that fact.
Every user has a contact page. Period. Regardless of whether they are a bot.

New members can't use VMs anyway, so the point is moot.
This. Your contact page and such are disabled on your terms, or a Super Ban.

You can't stop humans that sign up manually. The best you can do is infract them for their advertisement. Humans can go through any sort of security you can have to sign up for a forum, since it isn't made to be that difficult.

What kind of company does that?

My bad, didn't know. However, that doesn't defeat the purpose of a bot filter.

This is exactly what i wanted him to know.

Bots can be blocked, Human users can bypass any security we throw at them, provided it's fair and legit.

Guys, this point is moot. Yes, we can add things like the cache to stop adbots. This can be brought up with admins and what they do with it is up to them. We cannot stop human members from manually coming and advertising something. End of story.

LP he wasn't talking about HUMANS he was talking about BOTS man.

@"well, it could be humans"

Bot are much more likley than humans. I haven't heard of anything that uses humans to log in.

@mark

So is there at least a chance a bot filter could be added?

That would be up to an admin to pass it along to MLG, and MLG would decide if they wanted to upgrade the site to support bot filters.

Now, you kids settle down.

Then adding a Cache is all that is necessary.
After that, it's up to you to figure out what the companies are going to try to advertise their products on the largest Smash Brothers Forums in history.
I haven't heard of anything that uses humans to log in.
You aren't searching hard enough.
