After the recently-created Mario Kart X creation thread, I decided to make this as a sister thread to that one. With this thread, we're going to be creating a more Mario-adjacent Mario Kart game that feels more like a celebration of Mario's own history and those around him. Before we get started, however, I wanted to set a few ground rules:

1. RPG content is ineligible for the base game. We'll decide what to do with that later.
2. Mainline Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Wario (Land and Ware) content is perfectly fair game for the base game.
3. No crossover-based content for the base game. Like the RPG content, we'll decide what to do with guests at a later date.

Job #1: Should there be another gimmick?

Job #2: How should cups be handled?​

For #1, I want you to come up with a new gameplay gimmick for this hypothetical game. For #2, I wanted to ask how many cups will be included at launch (each cup will still include 4 tracks).

Here are my submissions for each job, in case you were all wondering:

Job #1: Should there be another gimmick?
You could collect 8 Red Coins to activate a special item, which can also be freely assigned to any character. I was also thinking you could hold up to three items at a time; one for Attack, Shield, and Speed, respectively. In addition, I think there should also be a handful of tracks with alternate paths on each lap, kind of like some of the tracks in the Booster Course Pass.

Job #2: 48 at launch. 24 new, and 24 retro.

Job #01: I don't think we'd really need a particular gimmick, but I do have one that might work well for set dressing - akin to the Zero-Gravity gimmick back in Mario Kart 8. Specifically, Temporal Jumps - which allow you to transition between different "time periods" in a stage's history, a little like the time travel in Sonic CD.

Every stage would have a "past" and "future" variant, which could be switched between by passing through a Temporal Gate. Notably, Temporal Gates can either be over the entire track - meaning everyone would pass through it - or only over part of the track, meaning you could choose whether to enter it or not, but they're featured in some form or another on every track. A stage's "past" and "future" forms would have slightly different appearances and layouts, the specifics of which could change from stage to stage. Some (purely hypothetical) examples;

• A stage set in some woodlands, with the "past" variant during spring, and the "future" variant in autumn.
• A stage set in a shipwreck. Its "past" variant is still sailing, but the "future" variant is sunken underwater.
• A Bowser's Castle stage, with the "past" variant being a more traditional castle, while the "future" variant has been redecorated.
• A Retro stage where the "past" variant is more accurate to its original version, while its "future" variant has more changes overall.

Job #02: I think you could easily have 33 tracks at launch - 16 of them (four cups) as new, 16 of them (four cups) as retro, and then a "Minus World" (or thereabouts) which mashes up all kinds of elements from the other tracks into one giant one.

Job 1:
Deeper kart customization tied to tracks with more experimental, multi-faceted layouts.

Players can customize a multitude of kart parts to make their dream karts! I'm talking adding spoilers, ornaments, and paint jobs to customization in addition to bodies and tires. And that's just the cosmetic stuff!

Players can also apply a number of specialized parts to their karts. These parts allow you to go through the tracks in unexpected, fantastical ways, adding new paths for every combination! Gliders, propellers, and anti-grav engines would be moved to this area, along side drills, floatation devices, and whatever else we can think up! You'd only be able to equip three of these specialty parts at once, for balance and all that.

I'm looking to experiment, really messing with the mario kart formula here, something wild!

I’m sorry, but FazDude’s Shell Cup is too much for a first cup. Koopa Cape and Wario Stadium have no place in the Shell Cup, and even Delfino Square feels a bit dicey. Especially in six cups instead of the usual four.

Let’s wait until the Banana Cup to consider DS Delfino Square, and beyond that for Wario Stadium. I’d rather leave Koopa Cape out since we just got it in the BCP.

I do like Perkilator’s suggestions of new courses however. Shy Guy Skate Park sounds fun.

Yeah, I’ll admit Shell Cup wasn’t my strongest offering. I misremembered Koopa Cape as a Flower Cup course in Wii and by the time I realized my mistake I couldn’t get to editing it before voting started. I’m still gonna fight for it (and especially Wario Stadium), but Shell Cup probably isn’t the best place for either in hindsight.
