Alex and Bayonetta can't be the only ones to get some capsule toys. Here's a few for that lovable spaceship, Opa-Opa.

Fantasy Zone Capsule Toys
  • Earth
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: Galactic Protector
    • System Debut: Master System
One of the three expressive planets Opa-Opa and Upa-Upa defend in Galactic Protector. Should the Opa-Opa brothers fail to destroy the incoming astroids, the Earth will react accordingly. Should they fail too much, it spells bad news for the planet and anyone on it, including YOU the player reading this right now-as it'll explode! Keep us safe Opa-Opa!

  • Saturn
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: Galactic Protector
    • System Debut: Master System
Another of the three planets Opa-Opa and Upa-Upa defend in Galactic Protector. Just like Earth, Saturn is extremely expressive as it winces in fear when meteors and enemies head it's way and shows relief at being saved by the Opa-Opa Bros when they prevent it from exploding! Maybe they should get Segata Sanshiro to help defend it...

  • Jupiter
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: Galactic Protector
    • System Debut: Master System
The last of the three planets Opa-Opa and Upa-Upa defend in Galactic Protector. Like it's smaller peers, Jupiter is in need of protecting from invaders and debris. He seems to be the oldest of the three planets, wearing a well groomed moustache. Despite being the largest, Jupiter can only take the same amount of hits at both Saturn and Earth!

  • Stunpalon
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: Fantasy Zone
    • System Debut: Arcade
The boss of Plaleaf, the planet of greenery, Stunpalon is a sentient wooden tree stump like creature that shoots richocheting green bullets out of it's mouth at Opa Opa. Fortunately for the sentient spacecraft, Stunpalon's attack leaves it's mouth wide open for some of Opa-Opa's own firepower!

  • Volanda
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: Fantasy Zone
    • System Debut: Arcade
The grumpy faced boss of Tabas, the planet of fire, Volanda is a volcanic like creature that shoots out lava chunks from it's test tube like protrusion on it's head, heating up the battle with Opa-Opa and forcing him to dodge the raining fire from above whilst firing his own attacks off against the protective bubbles around Volanda's face. Volanda appears on the western box art of the Master System version.

  • O-Mama
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: 3D Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa Bros.
    • System Debut: Nintendo 3DS
Opa-Opa and Upa-Upa's mother and the wife of O-Papa. O-Mama sends the Menon forces after her son as punishment for taking Opa-Opa's money without permission and although Upa-Upa ends up victorious, the victory eats even further into his brother's funds. O-Mama forces him to repay all the money he took from Opa-Opa's bank account.

Okay, all this stuff will continue to go on. Fantasy Zone in particular could probably use some more love.

In the meantime, the votes are in, and the Kvaris Region will be our second Phantasy Star stage!!!! Gonna be real I like that we've been knocking out these at-the-time not yet added stage archetypes lately. Helps make our stage lineup feel more well-rounded.

Anyway....

Job #203: Submit a tracklist for the Kvaris Region

Keep it to a max of 16 tracks and you're good to go. I'd say the recommended approach would be to take advantage of this opportunity to put in some music from PS subseries other than the classics

Bayonetta trailer:

The trailer starts off with Joker using All-Out Attack on NiGHTS as Last Surprise plays, finishing off with the splash screen. However, the music fades out and the screen fades to black, as we hear Bayonetta saying something like "Let me give that a try." An unseen fighter attacks Joker in a similar manner (with a blue background instead of a red one), finishing with Bayonetta getting a Persona 5 style All-Out Attack screen. (this would purely be for the trailer, since people see plenty of similarities between Joker and Bayonetta, along with it being a showy way to reveal her)

Cut to gameplay with Moon River playing in the background, where we see Bayonetta demonstrating her regular moves on a variety of fighters (including some references, like using Tetsuzanko on Akira), along with her special moves and demonstrating one or two of her taunts through a dance-off with Ulala. (along with Bayonetta occasionally making comments like "did you really think I'd miss out on all of the fun?" - considering her presence in Smash, I feel like a lot of people would assume that she'd be included in this as soon as it was announced) During this demonstration, we get a glimpse of the Platinum Stars stage.

The second half of the trailer reveals other Bayonetta content in the game (Enzo being summoned as an assist, with his infamous "Oh, what a day!" quote from when you get a Stone Award, Bayonetta using Odette as an item), along with the Space Harrier stage. (this half of the trailer would be set to the Bayonetta remix of the Space Harrier theme) There's also more footage of the Platinum Stars stage in here, though this time, the planes from After Burner interfere with the fighting. Bayonetta smacks someone with the fish from Seaman at one point, which somehow isn't the strangest weapon that she's used.

The music continues in the background, fading out as a splash screen similar to the ending of Bayonetta 2 is shown, featuring the game's logo and all of the fighters shown so far (Sonic, Tails, Eggman, Akira, Kiryu, Alex Kidd, AiAi, Axel, Beat, Ryo, Ulala, Sakura, Joker, Arle, NiGHTS), with Bayonetta front and center. The trailer fades to black, appearing to be over.

...then we hear Bayonetta saying "This party's getting crazy! Let's rock!", followed up by a few seconds of footage of Bayonetta being used in the Crazy Taxi mode out of context (with the opening "YAH YAH YAH YAH YAH" from the Crazy Taxi theme in the background), both to introduce the mode and to confuse people.

Sega eyeball logo.

Newly revealed content:

-Bayonetta (character)
-Platinum Stars (stage)
-Enzo (assist)
-Space Harrier (stage)
-F-14 Tomcat (assist)
-Odette (item)
-Seaman (item)
-Crazy Taxi (mode)

Not sure how much detail to put into this - I can expand on the parts where she demonstrates her moves if you want, though they'd involve already-revealed characters and already-revealed stages. (don't want to give away too much) A bit of a shame that Opa-Opa wasn't one of the already-revealed characters - I was hoping to have Bayonetta mistake him for an angel that's slightly weirder than most of them. (one angel is literally just a car, and another is a baby head with wings)

Phew, this took longer than I was hoping. Like Megadoomer says it's a shame no Opa-Opa yet, but I made do with another 'angel' reference from the characters we currently have revealed.

Bayonetta reveal

We begin with a simple gameplay battle between Sonic, Tails and Eggman atop the GUN Truck of City Escape. The truck is careening down a hill, as Tails is knocked flying upwards by Eggman. The F-10 Tomcat assist is shown in the background albeit subtly.

We cut to CGI footage of Tails looking into the distance as the truck carries on without him. Up ahead he spots something. Tails gasps as we have a dramatic camera wide shot of the truck speeding towards no other than Alex Kidd, who is casually eating a rice ball as he crosses the road blissfully unaware of the impending danger. Tails frantically chases after the truck to try and warn Sonic.

On the truck Sonic and Eggman continue to grapple, before looking towards the camera. With wide eyes they both realise they're about to hit Alex! Sonic leaps off the truck and onto the ground, keeping pace with the GUN truck and trying to get in front to save Alex, but it is too late even for him.

Just as the truck is atop him, Alex Kidd nonchalantly punches the GUN Truck, stopping it dead in it's tracks. Sonic skids to a halt, impressed. Alex flashes a peace sign to Sonic who gives him a thumbs up in return. This cute moment is ruined however when, Dr. Eggman's heavy mecha lands on Alex, having slid off of the truck due to it's sudden halt, crushing Alex.

Sonic's eyes widen as Tails arrives and lands at the scene. Eggman, with a little force manages to get his mecha out of the concrete and floats up, only for Alex's angel like soul to float into the atmosphere as Sonic, Tails and Eggman watch on. Alex looks around as he peacefully floats upwards, only for the F10 Tomcat assist to zoom past him, causing Alex surprise and another low flying jet to shoot by whipping Alex's soul out the sky.
Alex holds onto the jet for dear...err... afterlife(?), before being kicked in the face and sent flying off the jet by a familiar heeled boot.

We do a slow pan up the owner of the boot's body to reveal it was (of course) Bayonetta. The camera spins around her to reveal her standing atop the Platinum Stars as Acceptance lands on the plane. She smiles, licking her lips and whips out Scarborough Fair.

We cut to gameplay footage of Bayonetta vs. Acceptance showcasing that this stage hazard can be damaged whilst also showing off some of her normal moves including her new smash attacks against it before finishing it off with Madame Butterfly's limbs. Upon finishing Acceptance off we see it drop an item: The iDog.

Bayonetta walks up to it, turning it on. The iDog walks on, and 'Let's Dance Boys!' begins playing. Bayonetta struts forward in tune to the tempo. We then get a demonstration of her abilities:

  • We see her and Joker engage in a shoot out with them at first evenly matched with her using the Charge Bullet variance before Bayonetta getting the upperhand with her Bullet Climax.

  • We see her chasing NiGHTS down with her Witch Twist after they perform a paraloop. Bayonetta showcases her combos with it here, knocking NiGHTS further into the air before transforming into a crow to show off her Crow Within ability, firing feathers as she does so.

  • We see her successfully counter Axel Stone's Dragon Upper with a Heel Slide into the After Burner Kick.

  • We see her perform Witch Counter on Ryo Hazuki (a subtle reference to Shenmue's in game time mechanics). Whilst she doesn't counter attack we do see Ryo taunt, rubbing his neck and saying “Get serious”.

  • We then see Bayonetta perform her own taunt (namely taunt 3) in which she performs various poses before flourishing whilst Ulala performs taunt one saying 'Let's Dance'.
We then see Enzo appear in gameplay. He rapidly hides behind Bayonetta as she faces off with Arle Nadja before pulling out the Odette from his gift boxes. Bayonetta equips the Odette as Arle hits Enzo with an Ice Storm sending him tumbling away. Bayonetta then lands, skating on the Odettes at top speed at Arle and kicking her, sending her flying.

We cut to CGI, as Sakura Shinguji leaps onto the back of Platinum Stars. Bayonetta adjusts her glasses with her gun, as Sakura readies her blade. Allies of demons are not allies of her. The two engage in some high octane CGI battle with Sakura deflecting Bayonetta's bullets and attempting to close the gap. We see Sakura dodging past Madam Butterfly, but always being just one step behind Bayonetta. We cut to gameplay of Bayonetta then performing her All-Star Move; Infernal Climax which attacks Sakura sending her flying.

We end on Bayonetta's victory screen(slightly edited to remove the score details), before cutting to the 'BATTLE OF AGES' title.

The after credits stinger is back on the ground of the crimescene.
Dr. Eggman is being arrested by Axel Stone as a worried Tails looks into the crater where Alex lay smashed. Sonic sprints off, picking up a '?' block from Mt. Eternal and returning, smashing the brick with a spindash and knocking out an 'extra life' which he throws into the crater with a jaunty spin of the wrist. A small flash of light erupts from the crater and a very confused Alex Kidd pops his head out the crater hole as Sonic and Tails celebrate.
Dr. Eggman attempts to point out Alex is fine to Axel, but Axel is uninterested and continues to haul him away.

Total reveals:
  • Bayonetta (Fighter)
  • Platinum Stars (Stage) + Acceptance (Stage Hazard)
  • Enzo (Assist)
  • Odette (Item)
  • City Escape (Stage)
  • F-10 Tomcat (Assist)
  • iDog (Item)

Alright, time to vote on Bayo trailers!

Here's the poll:

Kvaris Region tracklist submissions are still going

As for collectables, we're still a bit short on VMU enemies so I'll give everyone special permission to submit 3 more of them. Try to spread out your series love a bit though. I'm also granting yall permission to submit more Capsule Toys and artwork - that said, I feel we have enough Bayo artwork so try to focus on the other two for art - especially Fantasy Zone, as we still have only one piece of artwork from it

Bonus VMU Enemies:
-Kinship (Bayonetta)
-Hideous (Bayonetta)
-Sloth (Bayonetta)

(sorry for not spreading it out between series, but I know next to nothing about Alex Kidd or Fantasy Zone, and Bayonetta has a ton of enemies that could be included)

Artwork:

Fancy Flying
Box art of Fantasy Zone (similar art was used for different versions of the game, but I can't find one that doesn't have system logos and whatnot)

Super Star
Box art of Super Fantasy Zone

Missile Barrage
Box art of the Game Gear version of Fantasy Zone

The Tears of Opa Opa
Box art of Fantasy Zone II

Alex Kidd capsule toys
These two animals are a pair of bandits that attack anyone who should come into the Blackwoods. Funky Monkey will pretend to cry to lure sympathetic victims in and then Grizzly Bear will use his intimidating frame and giant sword to threaten them into giving up their valuables or perish. If the victim refuses, Funky will hide in a tree pelting them with coconuts whilst Grizzly will attack them with his sword. Defeating Grizzly will cause Funky to also be defeated.

  • Queen Tahnya
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
    • System Debut: Mega Drive
The royal ruler of the pyramids and desert areas of Planet Paper-Rock, she challenges Alex Kidd to a life or death game of janken-as is the tradition on Planet Paper-Rock. A sore loser, if Alex Kidd wins, she'll beg for a rematch stating she wasn't ready. Alex can either choose to accept the rematch and risk his life once more, or decline at which point he automatically wins.

  • Radaxian Royal Soldiers
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX
    • System Debut: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC
When Egle is kidnapped during Janken's invasion, this quartet of soldiers are sent to find and save him and the rest of the royal army by Queen Patricia. Whilst the Captain manages to find Egle's treasured magic hammer, and the lantern holding one goes to search the dungeons located at the top of the castle, the larger soldier is more interested in playing his video games than finding the missing prince and the soldier with the long helmet is terrified of fighting Gooseka to help.

  • Resurin, Skappa and Yashin
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd BMX Trial
    • System Debut: Master System
These three BMX riders are Alex Kidd's rivals in BMX trial. They will attempt to knock Alex off his bike. Reurin, the leopard headed one will attempt to punch Alex off at all chances. Skappa the Kappa struggles in the ground sections but becomes a very dangerous opponent on the water courses jumping out the lake as an obstacle instead of racing and Yashin the horse faced one will attempt to slide his bike into Alex's to take him out.

  • Sukopako Motorcycle
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    • System Debut: Master System
Alex Kidd's trusty motorcycle, the Sukopako Motorcycle can easily defeat enemies and breakable blocks by riding into them, although it is fragile and will be destroyed upon touching an unbreakable red block. Alex has used this in Miracle World, Enchanted Castle and to race against his fellow Sega stars in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. In Project x Zone 2 when Ulala performs 'Let's Do This!' Alex will ride the Sukopako Motorcycle into her opponent, although it'll break on impact.

  • Pedicoptor
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    • System Debut: Master System
A pedal powered one man helicoptor, the Pedicoptor allows Alex Kidd to fly through the sky...providing he can keep pedelling! If Alex stops pedelling he'll begin to descend. Due to the amount of airborne enemies, the vehicle has been equipped with a powerful projectile to shoot enemies out of the sky. The Pedicoptor was Alex Kidd's All-Star move in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing where he'd shoot out homing missiles on the other racers for a brief period.

  • Tentacles
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    • System Debut: Master System
Large red octopi creatures that reside inside pots. They have destructable tentacles which Alex can break by punching bit by bit. Rumour has it that one of the Tentacles in Lake Fathom is guarding a huge stack of treasure inside it's pot. Turn Tentacles into Takoyaki and get those Baums!

  • Kaerun
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    • System Debut: Master System
Frog like enemies that leap up at Alex Kidd. They are usually stationary but leap up at intervals to try and get Alex Kidd if he tries leaping over. They are however, no match for the Sukopako Motorcycle nor Alex's Power Bracelet. Sick of a life of being a fodder frog, it seems the Kaerun have trained themselves to increase their jumping speed and spit projectiles, returning in My Hero to ruin Steve's life(alongside everything else in that game).

  • Fishman
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    • System Debut: Master System
Large half fish, half man like creatures who shoot powerful streams of bubbles at any who near them. After defeating Janken the Great, Alex's final opponent in Miracle World is technically a Fishman who guards Lake Cragg where the golden crown is kept. Defeating him and performing the puzzle correctly according to King High Stone's Hirotta Stone will allow Alex to obtain the crown and reverse the petrification curse on the people of Radaxian.

  • Heitaikun
    • Series: Alex Kidd
    • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Enchanted Castle
    • System Debut: Mega Drive
Toy soldiers who guard Ashra's Sky Castle, Heitaikun travel in packs and will occasionally stop dead in their tracks and turn around, messing with Alex Kidd's sense of rhythm. After Alex defeats Ashra, Heitaikun are sent to deliver news to Egle, Queen Patricia and Princess Lora about Alex locating the missing King Thunder and how he was living on Planet Paper-Rock. Despite initially being enemies, the Heitaikun's deliverance of this news lead to peace between Aries and Paper-Rock.

Artwork (I didn't see a limit to the additionals so I figured I'd throw a few more in for Alex and Opa-Opa):

Pit-Pot-Storming.png

Hammer time (Pit Pot)
Sega MyCard Art of Alex Kidd's brother, Prince Egle, cracking a few monster skulls with the magic hammer. Technically this is part of the Alex Kidd series. Notably Princess Lora hasn't got her green hair here.

Alex-Kidd-Snack-break.png

Snack Break (Alex Kidd Complete Album artwork)
Artwork for the audio CD of Alex's adventures featuring Alex Kidd, Stella, Princess Lora and...honestly even I'M not sure who the pink haired character is meant to be. If you have any idea let me know because I'm totally stumped.

Alex-Kidd-Shellcore-Training.png

Shellcore Training (Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX)
Opening cutscene art of Alex training on Mt. Eternal prior to Janken's invasion. I realised despite us using DX's design for Alex I only submitted one piece with that artstyle prior.

Alex-Kidd-Egle-two-brothers.png

The two Princes of Radaxian (Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX)
Artwork of Prince Egle ascending to the throne, as Alex bows to his brother, being granted the title of it's greatest hero.

Galactic Protector.jpg

Galactic Protectors (Galactic Protector)
Box art of Opa-Opa and Upa-Upa from the spinoff Fantasy Zone title, Galactic Protector.

Opa-Opa-Upa-Upa.png

Brotherly Quarrel (3D Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa Bros.)
An ending scene from Upa-Upa mode. Opa-Opa is not best pleased with his brother borrowing his savings.

Dark-Opa-Opa.png

Dark Opa-Opa (Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa)
An ending scene from Fantasy Zone II. This one is where Opa-Opa loses himself to his darker split personality.

I'll try to do some more Fantasy Zone Capsule Toys later.

An ending scene from Fantasy Zone II. This one is where Opa-Opa loses himself to his darker split personality.

I'll try to do some more Fantasy Zone Capsule Toys later.
I feel like if I added all these pieces of artwork, the amount of artwork from those two series would start to feel a little excessive relative to the others. Is it okay if I pick and choose a little? (You're free to resubmit the others in the final round where we go over and beef up each series all over again)

Alright, SO:

-Collectable submissions will go on for one more day

-YoshiandToad's Bayo trailer wins!!!!!

-OrpheusTelos' tracklist for the Kvaris Region wins by default!!!!

And now......our final stage. Taking care of the second stages was admittedly kind of a slog, so I hope this job can pump some more energy back into the thread. Get ready, folks, because this is gonna be a big one:

Job #204: Submit a misc. stage from.....any SEGA IP

That's right, one more stage and it's our final misc. stage as well! And this time? Anything goes. Any SEGA IP is on the table. You also won't have to worry about disconfirmations this time, as our roster is already finished, so feel free to do whatever you'd like. In fact, as this is our last base stage job, I'm allowing everyone to submit up to 2 stages. So have fun!

Stage submission:
First stage:
Carrier Zone (Afterburner)

1652640509051.png

Carrier Zone is a location from Afterburner games and it's a place where F-14 Tomcat starts it's journey in the skies above the ground of our planet Earth. The Carrier swims through oceans while carrying the planes on itself.
The carrier itself appeared ont only in it's home series, but it appeared in Sega Superstar Tennis as tennis court and Sonic and SEGA Allstars Racing Transformed as race track, which it implies that Afterburner is one of SEGA's iconic hit games.

As a stage, it would be walk-off stage that has one cliff edge at left side of the map. There are two platforms that appear on sides of the stage. There are no Hazards whatsoever.
In the background, you could see F-14 Tomcat standing there and in sky background, you could see planes flying around.
(And speaking of F-14 Tomcat, you still can summon planes on this stage)

Second stage:
Maze (Snail Maze)

1652640524827.png

Maze from Snail Maze is main setting of Snail Maze, a game released by SEGA in 1986 on Sega Master System. It's about Snail, who wants to pass through the maze.
Snail Maze is one of very obscure Sega games and we could represent as part of SEGA's history as form of Stage.

The layout would be like Pac-Maze, where it takes place at Maze, but it won't be completely like Pacmaze, which rest of maze would be in background. The random bold parts of the maze serve as soild platforms and some of walls on the maze are soft platforms.
Like I said on Carrier Zone submission, it doesn't also have any hazard either, making the game fair for casual players.
Occasionally, Snail from Snail Maze make a cameo in background, travelling through maze (Also he sometimes looks at the stage, often watching fighters brawl on the maze.

I nominate both stages, because they are related to SEGA's history I think...
Carrier Zone: Afterburner is very popular Arcade series made by SEGA and it was huge hit in 1980's, which 80's gamers remember the game series. Also, the carrier from Afterburner appeared in crossover Sega games, so it would be fair to add a stage that assist based on the series.
(Just like Nintendogs series have stage and assist in Smash bros.)

Snail Maze: I know it's a off-the-wall pick, but we need a stage based on SMS game that is not represented by fighter and in fact, the gameplay of the game is known for being challenging for players. The game was built for SMS' BIOS, which this stage would relate to SEGA hardware, which it is also part of SEGA's history (Especially the era of SEGA being a console developing company).

Stage Submission 1: Time Traveler

Time Traveler is a 1991 holographic FMV game where you help a cowboy (Marshal Gram) travel throughout time to stop the evil time lord, Vulcor, and save Pincess Kyi-La. It was groundbreaking for its time, being the first holographic game ever! The gameplay consisted of quick time event's as many other FMV games from its time.
To reflect the original game, the look of the stage would be almost completely black save for outlines of the stage and four three-dimensional shapes in the background.
The stage's layout would be similar to that of The Forest Floor from Rivals of Aether - basically a long base platform with four soft platforms arranged above it. Sometimes the screen will flash a bit, and background elements will appear or be swapped out (such as the aforementioned shapes, cacti from Western times, castles from Medieval times, neon signs from near-future times, and strange metal infrastructure from future times). With hazards on, enemies corresponding to the current time period will appear on the left or right of grounded fighters and do a quick, powerful attack - you'll have to be on your toes for sure!
I also think this would make for a pretty cool and atmospheric Training stage unless we already have one of those.
Stage Submission 2: Gain Ground

Gain Ground is a 1988 strategy game where you move forward, defeat enemies and free captives with an impressive roster of 20 unique characters, each with a different weapon. The goal is to reach the exit point of the level while saving as many captives as you can.
The stage takes place in Round 5, Stage 5, which can be seen in the video embedded above. It takes place up on the raised platform/balcony bit. It's kind of like a walk-off with a long soft platform in the middle and above the main stage. Occasionally, a captive from Gain Ground will appear at a random point on the stage, far from the exit point, with a blue "HELP!" text box. If you walk by them, they're freed and will follow your character at their own pace. You'll have to lead them from wherever they spawned to the exit point without them taking more than 20 HP of damage from other fighters (the savior of the captive cannot damage them, however). Bringing them to the stage's exit will lead to you regaining a fair amount of health!

I have another stage idea in mind that I might get to later, but for now I’m resubmitting the Dinosaur King stage.

Modern Sega arcade games are allowed for this round, eh? This gives me an idea...

Job #125 - Dinosaur Battlefied (Dinosaur King)

View attachment 342294

Okay, so you know that Mushiking thing we have as an assist with the beetles fighting each other? Well that wasn’t the only card-based fighting game that Sega released in the early-mid 2000’s. Just off that game’s success, Sega released Dinosaur King in 2005, a game that uses very similar card-based mechanics and a rock-paper-scissors battle system, only this time with superpowered dinosaurs instead of beetles. And boy did Sega go all-in on this one. Throughout the mid-late oughts, Dinosaur King got a manga adaptation, an anime adaptation localized by 4Kids in the west, a DS game based on said anime adaptation, and a trading card game. Needless to say, this was Sega’s big monster-collecting franchise for a while. At least until they bought Atlus and aquired the Megami Tensei franchise, but that’s neither here nor there. Point is, this was a moderately successful franchise for Sega and while I doubt anyone here is clamoring for a character from it, I think a stage that features dinosaurs fighting would kick ass.

So the jist of this stage is that you’re plopped in the middle of an empty plane, similar to Rathalos’ arena in Smash Ultimate but with a single large platform in the middle. While you and your opponent are fighting, two dinosaurs will show up and start duking it out. While the dinos are fighting, one of them will unleash a super move that will alter the stage’s terrain. The possible terrains that will appear are as follows:
  • Fire Battlefield - The arena takes on a more volcanic appearance. Occasionally, the volcanoes will erupt and the floor will become covered in lava, forcing players to retreat to the top platform.
  • Water Battlefield - This arena takes place against a wetland area with waterfalls. Occasionally, a water geyser will erupt and damage any fighter it hits.
  • Thunder Battlefield - The arena becomes stormy and bolts of lightning will strike from the sky to hit opponents.
  • Earth Battlefield - The battlefield becomes a rocky desert and becomes susceptible to earthquakes. Fighters who don’t get on the platform before the earthquake starts will get hurt.
So yeah, the whole gimmick here is that it’s a constantly changing battlefield that keeps players on their toes. Also cool dinosaurs.

Job 204:

Strange Fortress (Gunstar Heroes)

Black has built a silly dice-maze! Go!

The stage seems simple enough - a flat platform with a path visible on a screen in the background, and a dice in the center. However, if the dice is hit by anything, it will cause it to roll, moving a token forward the amount of spaces that the dice landed on. (once it lands, it can't be rolled until the event is completed)

Similar to the original game, landing on Fight causes a boss to appear as a stage hazard. While there won't be as many bosses as in the original game (the bosses for this stage alone go from the 17 minute mark to the 30 minute mark), there'd still be a few selected from the line-up, complete with warnings beforehand that tell the player what to do, such as...

Warning! Danger Ahead
- Vavalion -
Shoot his head

Potential bosses include Vavalion (a giant snake that moves around the screen), Timeron (a robot that drops bombs, before reversing time and having the bombs un-detonate and shoot back up into his body), and Minion Soldier (a random minion that's about half the size of a player character, who is surprisingly good at throwing people).

Landing on "Take an Item" spawns a bunch of items that players can pick up (if items are off, it's a breather), while landing on the "No Gun" space brings you into a fight with the infamous Curry And Rice, with the catch that players are unable to use special moves while Curry And Rice is present. This isn't as devastating as in Gunstar Heroes, but other players can still fight you while these bosses are on-screen, so they could take advantage of this. (maybe up specials would still be allowed to keep it from being broken; I'm not sure)

Landing on The Way Back takes you back to the beginning, while landing on the Boss stage summons Black himself as a stage hazard. (though his attack pattern is much less complicated since the room isn't boxed in - he walks back and forth, stepping on red, green, blue, and yellow panels on the floor) Beating him causes his mech to explode, dealing massive damage to anyone who's caught in the explosion (whoever dealt the final blow is immune to it).

All in all, there'd be a total of five stage hazards to deal with (Vavalion, Timeron, Minion Soldier, Curry and Rice, and the Black Beat Stepper), for the sake of (relative) simplicity.

If hazards are off, then it serves as a Final Destination style stage.

Ring of Madness (MadWorld)

The site of the final battle of MadWorld - a boxing/wrestling arena atop a massive tower that overlooks Jefferson Island. The central area is set up similarly to the Punch-Out boxing ring in Smash Bros., with the main difference being that it's not a walk-off stage - it's a loooooooong way down from the top of the tower.

In contrast to my other submission, this one is hazard-free, and as a result, it's nowhere near as complicated and doesn't require such a long description.

I have a second stage idea in mind but I want to make sure I bring back Another Super Performance!

Job #125 - Another Super Performance! (Feel The Magic: XX/XY)

View attachment 342312

Feel The Magic: XX/XY, also known as Project Rub in PAL regions and I Would Die For You in Japan (incredible title) is a Nintendo DS launch title by Sega and Sonic Team, possibly most famous for the sensual box art of a woman in silhouette wearing a bikini. It turns out everything in this game is a silhouette, from the strange Rub Rabbits creatures to the hapless protagonist and his equally unlucky lover. It turns out what this game is is...a really silly and pretty funny little Elite Beat Agents/WarioWare style minigame-collection with a great sense of style and humor, all themed around getting into situations with the mysterious girl of one's dreams you have to rescue her, yourself, or the public from. Sheesh!

This stage based on it would be a wacky one, naturally, to fit the style of it all. At first it would seem like a fairly standard place, as the fighters start on the large Break Time! platform as the girl of one's dreams sips her tea and plays with her cat in the background and the Rub Rabbits lounge around. Nice and peaceful, right?

WRONG!

After a few moments it turns out you're on a tightrope high above the city!

View attachment 342313

And let me tell you, monocyclists aren't the only thing you'll have to skillfully dodge as our happy couple gets into all kinds of grave danger! Why, they may have to face...

View attachment 342314

RAGING BULLS!

View attachment 342319

CALTROPS!

View attachment 342320

A DEADLY ANTLION!

View attachment 342324

HUMAN BOWLING BALLS!

View attachment 342326

View attachment 342330
AND SO MUCH MORE!

So yes, this stage will have a great artstyle and all kinds of ridiculous hazards that can hinder competitors and transform the terrain, changing the flow of the fight in an instant. It's chaotic, but hey, anything for love!

View attachment 342328

In researching this stage I realized that the game has so much material you could easily make a moveset for this couple, which is absolutely hilarious to me. Seriously check this game and its sequel out if you get the chance, it's pretty fun.

I'll see what I can come up with for the second stage once more submissions get in but for now I'll resubmit Apartment #203
So I decided to submit a stage of my own. There were a lot of other IP I considered for submission, but ultimately, there was one in particular that I was more interested in submitting. I hope you like seeing me gush about weird SEGA ****, cause that's all I'll be doing with this one:

Job #72: Apartment #203 from Roommania #203
View attachment 330794
So you may be asking yourself "the **** is a Roommania?". I shall explain.

Roommania #203 is a weird sort of life simulation game released for the Dreamcast in 2000. In it, you - the player - are following the life of a man named Neji Taihei, a college student who....kinda lives a whatever life. He spends most of his days just lazing around in his apartment, smoking and watching TV. And it's up to you to make his existence more meaningful! (The game's words, not mine.) How do you do this? The game gives you a first-person view of Neji's day-to-day habits from various camera angles, and you just throw balls at objects to get him to try to interact with them! For example, you can keep chucking balls at the computer to get him to go on his favorite curry-themed message board. The game has an in-game calendar that lets you check in on his room at different days and times of day. It also gives you "missions" of sorts that are started up by cutscenes that give you hints as to what to do - all in the name of getting him to live life! I myself would recommend you check out a playthrough of the game, as even I feel like I can't do 100% justice to how this game works. But overall: weird **** happens, and it's fascinating to see the results of your Wacky Shenanigans unfold.

This game very much falls in line with a lot of other games in the Dreamcast era, where you could see that SEGA were getting hella experimental - what with your Space Channel 5s and Jet Set Radios and Shenmues and Rezes and Napple Tales and so on. This even shows with some of their arcade games of the time, like Crazy Taxi. Also worth noting is that this game was actually mainly the work of one Tomoko Sasaki, a composer at SEGA who's best known for her work on the NiGHTS series (fun fact: she did the Ashley's Song remix for Brawl!), and we'll get back to her involvement in the game later. I think she actually once cited internet webcams as an inspiration for this game's gameplay loop, and I guess you could see it that way. It's also been described as more of an "intervention simulator" rather than your usual life simulation game. While the original game was for the Dreamcast, thus making it eligible for this job, the series actually had its last hurrah on the PS2, with not only a port of the original game, but a full-on sequel, titled New Roommania: Porori Seishun. Throughout all this, however, the series has remained without any international releases. I don't even know if there are any fan translations out there, to be honest!

So what about the stage itself? Well, you fight in Neji's room. There are times in the game where he's not home, and the player gets to snoop around and even mess with some of his stuff. And as such, the fights we'll partake in here end up making a total mess of his room. Wanna knock your opponent into a computer, destroying it in the process? Go ahead, you can do just that in this stage! However, it is a bit of a cramped place, and as such, the fighters would get a slight downscale here. Not outright tiny, but smaller than the average proportions of a human relative to the room. I'd put them at about the height of the table in the above image: small enough that the room can work as a platform fighter stage, but big enough that the appeal of Football Manager ****ing up some random dude's apartment in an intense battle to the death is still there. Even so, this would still be on the smaller side of this game's stage roster, which would make it all the more chaotic. But that's not just due to the stage's smaller size and breakable objects, as in fact, this stage actually has a hazard:

The player.

Back to what I said about how the game worked: as I'd said, it partly consisted of the player chucking balls at things to get Neji to interact with them, or to interact with them yourself. Well, you're not the only ones snooping around on his apartment while he's away: the player is here too. And as such, sometimes, a small warning sign will show up on a certain part of the stage - and a buncha balls start coming in from the foreground, damaging anyone who gets in their way!

So overall, this stage can be described as absolute madness. And how do you make all that really come together? With a healthy dose of late 90s J-pop.

I obviously won't be putting any cohesive tracklists together just yet, but I do believe it's worth mentioning that this stage actually would have some pretty good music potential. You see, around this time, the aforementioned Tomoko Sasaki was working on a project with some other members of Wave Master, SEGA's in-house record label. Said project was a fake singer, named Serani Poji. They released a few albums under that name, and it's an interesting part of SEGA history. However, there are two important things to note here - A. Tomoko composed Serani Poji's music, and B. most of her discography was actually featured in this very game! Since then, the works of Serani Poji have come to be widely associated with Roommania, which in a weird roundabout way, also makes this game feel strongly tied to the early days of Wave Master, which is still going to this day. So not only does it overall make for a pretty cool piece of history.....it also provides this stage with some pretty good music potential. Just fill it up with Serani Poji music! And trust me, there's some pretty good **** in there too.

So overall, I think this would make for a pretty cool stage. SEGA have still celebrated this game in small ways from time to time - for a recent example, Neji actually got his own 60th anniversary pfp when they rolled these out - so it's a sensible deep cut to make, all things considered. Anyway yeah it'd be epic I think
I should probably mention that ever since I first submitted this stage, I found out that the Roommania rabbit hole goes way deeper than I thought.

SEGA love to reference this game. Neji got his own 60th anniversary icon. Music from the game has shown up in various SEGA albums. A song from the sequel is available as one of many SEGA songs to play in the Yakuza games. It's one of the games shown in that huge SEGA logo that's shown before the Sonic movies. It's nuts. From what I've seen, this game seems to generally be seen as a legit Dreamcast classic in Japan, like, Korone played it???? And I love all of this. I love the idea of this completely bonkers game that's beloved in Japan both by SEGA and fans yet is basically completely unheard of in the West. This game occupies such a cool space in SEGA history and I feel like if we wanna aim for authenticity, some form of content from it is needed.

Job #204: Cyberspace (Rez)

Area2_03.0.jpg

So Rez is this really cool game that Sega released in 2001 for the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2. The main jist is that it's an on-rail shooter where you play as a computer hacker who has to fight off viruses and awaken the AI Eden. The game has this wireframe aesthetic and your shots sync up with the game's music. I'd highly recommend looking into this game if you're interested. It's an incredibly unique experience and is suprisingly accessible to modern audiences. It got ported to the Xbox 360 back in 2008, and an enhanced VR compatible version was released for the PS4 and PC a few years back. Between how long this game has endured and its unique aesthetic, Rez stood out to me as something that would make for a compelling stage.

In this stage, you'll be fighting on a single flat stage with three platforms being guided along the rails throughout the vastness of cyberspace. The platforms will dissapear and reappear to the beat of the music, and everyime a fighter gets knocked out, the aesthetic of the stage changes as you're transported to a different area in cyberspace. Here's just a taste of some of the abstract locations you can look forward to visiting on your cyberspace tour:

Rez-Screen-4.jpg

Rez-Infinite.jpg

rezthumb-1449343615879.jpg

rezinfinitepc8.jpg

When you're on your last stock or the timer is close to running out, you'll be transported to the room where none other than Eden resides. The AI will watch over the remainder of your battle without interfering.

For this job's first submission, Speed Weed Speed Weed granted me permission to re-submit his idea below.

First Stage: Super Locomotive

View attachment 350078
Okay so Super Locomotive was this arcade game SEGA did in 1982 and it rules. You control a speeding train in a sidescrolling enviroment, as you have to outrun and defeat various types of vehicles that are after you. Here's a gameplay video (warning: some small flashing lights):
I've thrown this idea around in the server before, but I really think this could make for such a cool stage. Characters would be fighting on the train as it speeds through a grassland. All the while, the various enemies from the game will show up as hazards chasing the train down - this includes other trains with angry faces and muscles, and also planes that'll drop bombs on you. The train will also be shooting missiles at said enemies, and will sometimes turn brighter-colored and start going even faster. Is it kinda dollar store Spirit Train? Yeah, kinda. But all in all, I think this would make for a very fun hectic stage. Also, if we're considering this as Kurumi's home stage, then I think it makes sense to pick out a stage from the earlier days of SEGA arcade games.

And while I obviously won't be putting any tracklists together just yet, I do believe it's worth noting this stage's musical potential. You see, Super Locomotive's high-octane action is famously backed by a rather good chiptune remix of the instrumental track Rydeen, by pioneering Japanese synth-pop band Yellow Magic Orchestra. We have precedent for including licensed tracks in our game and goddammit YMO are one of my favorite bands and I will take advantage of the opportunity to get a song by them in our project.

Anyway yeah funny train
And now, for a Round Two.... LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! WELCOME TO THE...

Second Stage: Holosseum

Holosseum is a 2D two-player fighting game, which was developed by SEGA themselves and released for the arcades in December 1992. It was created exclusively for their hi-tech hologram theater cabinet alongside Time Traveler (designed by Dragon's Lair creator Rick Dyer in 1991), as one of the company's attempts at creating a fighting game along with Dark Edge, to compete with Capcom's iconic classic, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, which was released the previous year.

This game used holographical technology to make 2D sprites appear to be floating in a 3D space, with it's display working with a concave mirror inside the cabinet that reflects a specially framed image produced on a standard monitor. It was one of the first fighting games to attempt a realistic depiction of mixed-martial arts contests, before a more famous Virtua Fighter was released the next year, which meant that fighters lacked flashy fictional moves (fireballs/acrobatic kicks) and instead used various real-life fighting styles such as Muay Thai (Dompayagen), Karate Shihan (Dave), Chinese Wushu (Chen) and self-taught mixed-martial arts (Garrison).

In Battle of AGES, Holosseum functions almost like an amalgamation of Boxing Ring, Flat Zone and Final Destination, all from Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series. The stage takes place inside a large, white arcade cabinet with a black screen and it's void-like background composing of simple 3D shapes (cubes, balls, etc.) on the ground and all four holographic-projected fighters (Dompayagen, Dave, Chen and Garrison) posing while performing their fighting moves. It is a rather simple stage that doesn't have any platforms, but players are rendered in 2D to reference how fighters' sprites were projected (akin to Flat Zone stages) and can be KO'd through the cabinet screen's borders (their player icons can be seen behind them).

While Holosseum lacks in layout despite it's aesthetics, it makes up with a special condition that every time you're playing this stage, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi will be replaced by this giant blue floating holographic head as the announcer/cameo, providing commentary during the match at specific moments like when the player defeats someone, respawns ("It's always great to see guys in good shape!"), prepares for their All-Star Move ("Pulse-pounding action guaranteed!") or wins the battle ("Incredible! We have the new World Champion! (put a fighter name there)"). He starts by showing holographic mugshots of current players on the background alongside their titles like this: "The Blue Blur, Sonic the Hedgehog! The Shellcore Master, Alex Kidd! The Rock-Bottom Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga! Agent of the H.O.S.A. Division, Rikiya Busujima! Are you ready for the fight of your life?"

Sakura High School (13 Sentinels: Aeigs Rim)
From the gorgeous vanillaware developed and Atlus published RTS game. This game is on the more recent side of things but is extremely well regarded for its engaging story.

The stage would take place in rhe roof of the High School. Kind of like the above image but would feature extra elements such as vending machines and a bench. Various characters from the game cameo. In the background, Mechs known as Sentinels will do battle with monsters known as Deimos. The damage from this epic Brawl could effect the stage.

True to the orignal game, the stage will shift between three time periods. WW2, the 80s and the future. This will effect which characters show up and also the themging of the stage.

There's a lot of stage performance titles under Sega's belt. You have superstar Hatsune Miku, Project Sekai, and Miracle Girls Festival.

And they're all pretty good, but the only one for me personally is the cartoony, bouncy, samba filled tunes of Samba De Amigo!

Job #204: Festival De Amigo (Samba de Amigo)

Samba-de-Amigo-Stage-2.png

Yes, I had to try and get Amigo in there somewhere. If Amigo makes it in as DLC, he won't appear on stage.

The fighters will do battle on the stage as Amigo, Amiga, Rio, Linda, Chumba, Wamba, Bingo and Bongo all play their musical instruments and dance slightly further back. Confetti falls, the audience will bounce and jive...as the band belt out their Samba beats and dance.

The stage itself is a small flat stage perfect for a regular battle on. Either side of the stage are bouncing skyscrapers, preventing walk offs.

However platforms will dance their way onto the stage as the band increases their tempo. These platforms will bounce in time to the music making the track selection important. These platforms if stood on can send the fighters sky rocketing upwards.
Luckily this stage has a very high sky box so you're unlikely to go out of bounds, but if you are launched up, try to avoid hitting the smiling bouncing sun that'll appear at intervals or else you'll take fire damage. Being launched into the sun is a little too much samba heat even for our fighters!

The fighters aren't just limited to the stage and sky though. They can leap down into the cheering audience and do battle amongst the crowd sending the wacky denizens of Amigo's world flying as they tussle. Don't worry about hurting them, they'll return after a brief period with fresh smiles. Do Samba shows have mosh pits? I have no clue, but our fighters are able to setting it up!

Second stage coming soon.

So this is it. The final stage for the base game.

I considered a few options, but this one seems the most thematically fitting, as the swansong of Sega as a hardware company...and an excuse to ram in as many additional Sega cameos(and music) as possible:

Job #204: Sega Tower (Segagaga)

Segagaga-Sega-Tower.png

The battle will start in the city streets in front of Sega Tower. During this period the cars will have been jammed due to the fight. We'll see a few cameos here such as Hornet from Daytona, the famous red Outrun car, the Sega Rally car, the motorbike from Super Hang-On, B.D. Joe from Crazy Taxi, the Highway Cat from 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker and the mohawked bearded man from Power Drift (who I believe is called Mark). And of course, Sega Tarō himself will be there, inside the 'R-720' he pilots at the end of Segagaga.

Some of the drivers will honk their horns as you do battle in front of the tower. If the battle manages to last a minute, the stage will shift with the sky being darkened by DOGMA, the absolutely not Sony expy. Sega Tarō will launch into the sky, as the other drivers look up surprised.

The crossing will open up, to reveal O-Papa from Fantasy Zone, who will carry out combatants on his back into the fight, as other Sega characters begin to pop up and fly into battle:

Segagaga-FINAL-BATTLE.png

Obviously we have a lot of the combatants from Segagaga currently as our playable fighters and assists; Sonic, Tails, Alex Kidd, Nei, Opa-Opa, NiGHTS, Blue Dragon, Alis, Myau, Odin and Lutz(all one assist) and the F-10 Tomcat so they won't be cameos.

However, characters such as Ristar, Astal, Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III (aka the Clockwork Knight), Rika, Mieu, Mania and Maria (Trouble Shooter, otherwise known Madison and Crystal of Battle Mania in the west), the SEGA BASS, the Creatures from House of the Dead and the Bad Brothers will appear, doing battle with the dark forces of Dogma. As each joins the battle we'll see a little flash on the screen with their faces. O-Papa will fly around Sega Tower as the surroundings explode and we catch glimpses of our Sega stars battling DOGMA's forces.

Whilst O-Papa will be doing the majority of the DOGMA enemy fighting, occasionally a dark creature will appear in the sky above him which can damage the players. These abominations can be subdued with a single strong attack and picked up afterwards. They can then be used to throw at the players opponents as a handy makeshift projectile.

Eventually the battle calms down, and O-Papa will slowly and safely descend back to the city streets to rest until DOGMA attacks once more. This stage will repeat it's cycle.

Whilst our fighters cannot be hurt by the explosions in the background, they can accidentally fall off of O-Papa during the battle stage, so they should be wary of that.

Stage 1
Auriga (ENDLESS)

The ENDLESS Series is made by Amplitude studios and published by SEGA.

The stage would start out in the Middle of Space on top of a starship from ENDLESS Space and ENDLESS Space 2

The starship is a medium sized platform about the size of FD with 2 platforms that bob up and down

The starship flies around before crashing into planet Auriga where you essentially see a game of ENDLESS Legend being played as you fly around on the destroyed starship that lost a platform and the edges are melted and slanted

You see many sites and battles from ENDLESS Legend including many heroes and cities being built from many of the factions.

The ship finally gives out and falls into the ground where they tunnel through it and you end up in a Dungeon from ENDLESS Dungeon or Dungeon of the ENDLESS. From here the Layouts vary wildly and new hazards like enemies running onto the stage and attacking players start to appear.

After a bit the stage resets with everyone back on the starship where you see the planet in all it's glory before the stage resumes.
Stage 2

SBK (Snowboard Kids)

This would be a simple travelling stage that takes you across several mountains from Snowboard kids and you can see the characters snowboarding down the mountains. The stage may also start snowboarding down the mountain where you can take damage from obstacles and snowboarders.

Lord forgive me for submitting this, but...

Factory (Eggs of Steel)
See the source image

It would be a randomly generated stage in a similar vein to Super Mario Maker in smash bros in the factory from Eggs of Steel. The ground would be a metal platform, sometimes with multiple platforms with stairs between them. Obstacles like fans, gears and buckets of lava can occasionally spawn.
Eggs of Steel was the only good Atlus game and needs to be represented in this game.

Oops, I completely forgot to add some more of these. Here's some ones I think are obvious omissions:

Fantasy Zone Capsule Toys:
  • Dark Master
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: Super Fantasy Zone
    • System Debut: Mega Drive
The former vicious ruler of the Shadow World, Dark Master left his world in order to conquer the Light World. He went to planet Menon and warped the creatures that resided there into his own personal army, naming them the Dark Menon Force. He started his invasion, rather foolishly, by attacking Opa-Opa's home territory of the Fantasy Zone.
  • Dark Opa-Opa
    • Series: Fantasy Zone
    • First Appearance: Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa
    • System Debut: Master System
Born from the emotional stress Opa-Opa went through during the first game, Dark Opa-Opa sort to take over Opa-Opa's good personality and eventually destroy the Fantasy Zone. Opa-Opa, unaware of this side of him, is sent to battle it by Opapa through a reverse warp gate, doing battle inside himself. Dark Opa-Opa ended up being a playable character in Sega 3D Classics Collection's Fantasy Zone II.

Shanghai Sega Joypolis Ticket.jpg

Sega Joypolis
The iconic sega arcade center. Players would fight on a facade in the middle like the 9ne above. But various arcade machines fill the stage, based off both actual sega games and fictional in universe ones. Sega characters both popular and obscure fill thr arcadeN, playing the game and watching the fight. (These would likely use the models found in our mini games)

Eventually Lopit will appear as a hologram in the back and start to preform, cheering the fighters on.

Job 204 (Second submission): Fantastic Pinball (Devil's Crush/Kyuutenkai Fantasic Pinball)

1652802221394.png

Okay, so, how to describe this one...

When looking at what SEGA properties and ideas we have represented in our project, one big thing I've been going back to again and again is the company Technosoft. Technosoft was purchased by SEGA, including all of their games, and particular is famous for the Thunder Force and Herzog series. Herzog Zwei and Thunder Force IV are considered some of the best games on the Genesis, and I'm like 90% sure we're gonna go back to the Thunder Force series for DLC. Still, I wanted to look into some Technosoft stage ideas, and for a few months now I've been super interested in the game I linked the Let's Play of, Kyuutenkai Fantasic Pinball for the PSX and Sega Saturn.

In researching the game (much harder than you'd expect) I came across something that's sort of a precursor to it, Devil's Crush. You see, Compile, a different company Sega bought, released Alien Crush and later Devil's Crush, and Technosoft was in charge of porting Devil's Crush to the Genesis. So I guess that port job got them to eventually make a pinball game of their own down the line...

Sega also has plenty of experience in pinball-related games. Sonic Spinball or Casino Night Zone, anyone? So yeah, what about a Pinball-themed stage? It could cycle through the aesthetics of different tables with different platform layouts, bumpers, and flipper hazards during the fights, randomly choosing between Fantasic Pinball's three anime-fantasy themed tables (Seriously, watch that video, there's something so bright and charming about this game, and cute, too!) and the more demonic Devil's Crush tables, perhaps even Alien Crush if it's eligible. Maybe there could be a Sonic CD or Sonic Spinball Easter Egg? Hmm.

Anyway, yeah! I just think this is a really fun deep cut that's been gnawing at the back of my mind for a while. I can't get over Kyuutenkai's aesthetic, it just sparks joy and I love the floating castles and big anime characters, and I think watching out for pinball flippers and bumpers in a flashy level could make for something really neat!

So, stages with retro graphics are a common idea for these kinds of games, and we've added a couple already, but it's been ones that make use of sprites. How about this time we change things up.....and go for an early polygon look?

Job #204-2: Acropolis from Virtua Racing
20220517_175553.jpg

Alright! So! Virtua Racing is generally considered, both by SEGA fans and SEGA themselves, to be one of the company's great milestones. Their first fully 3D arcade game!!! And the one that would pave the way for many more classic titles to come! It came down to either this or a Daytona stage for me, and ultimately I felt that this would be more visually interesting - plus we could probably use this stage to slide some Daytona music in anyway.

So this stage shall take place in Acropolis - the expert course in the original Virtua Racing. The early polygon graphics are recreated in all their glory. Players will start off fighting in the track's starting point, seen above. The blocky racing cars will serve as stage hazards, coming in to run over our fighters. At some point however, a flashing "V.R." sign will appear, and the fighters will be taken to one of several other points in the track:
20220517_175057.jpg

20220517_175116.jpg

20220517_175138.jpg

(in this last one, falling rocks would appear as a stage hazard)

Players will be taken through each of these locations, before returning to the starting point. So yeah! I feel like this would be a nice way of paying homage to one of SEGA's most important games. It helps that we can use this stage's tracklist as a way of filling out our musical representation from SEGA's wide catalog of arcade racers. It'd be cool!
