Well... he first said that Steve was in, then said that Steve was most likely DLC, and then made a statement that seems to imply that Steve isn’t guaranteed.

Welp, seems like Minecraft is coming to Smash as well maybe that character from the mobile game?

Funny part is that Steve was originally meme pick for smash 4 ballot a few years ago back. Now back to the present, Steve was discussed as one of the potential newcomers because he was mentioned by two credible leakers. If he was finally confirmed for smash, and then I believe that we memed steve from minecraft being in smash to the reality.

Sorry, this has been bugging me for a while and while it doesn't hurt much of anything... I wanna talk about it anyway. People are using the word 'theory' incorrectly a lot in this thread.

A theory is something that has been scientifically tested and proven to be accurate within our current knowledge and equipment.

A hypothesis is a guess based on the information available.

You do not have 'blog theory' or 'music theory' or so on. You have a 'blog hypothesis' and a 'music hypothesis', etc.

It's bugged me too, and I like to mention as an aside whenever talking about them. However, even in scientific context (i.e., not in a classroom) these words are used interchangeably (e.g., String Theory) without regard to any particular philosophy of science definition. What matters are the concepts, rather than the words themselves, so long as there isn't ambiguity. For casual chat, I'm fine with using the dictionary definition of theory, and my only real problem is conceptually--when people twists the facts to support their "theory", whereas twisting a "theory" to conform to the facts is perfectly reasonable.

There a lot of people that call us crazy when it comes to this but he did it for Smash 4 and brawl. The man is known for subverting expectations with smash. That being said, I'd rather be fooled for a 3rd time. I'm going to expect nothing else on purpose, for the possibility of being shocked again. I'm cool with this game the way it is already.

I agree with those that say we should lower our expectations, because surpassing our expectations is better than not reaching them. What I disagree is with the pessimism, that in order to have our expectations passed we must believe there is only two characters left despite how little sense it makes. There's also a problem with making our expectations too low that nobody ever talks about--if they're too low, rather than being happy our wishes came true, there's no room to be happy because we had no wishes to begin with. It's the difference between "Yay!" and "few..." Moderation is key.

In fairness to the blog theory, the guys themselves have said only 2 new characters is entirely possible and it'd still be right. 2 is the bare minimum, 8 is the maximum, 4-6 is expected range for most.

Everyone's just tunnel focused on the "8 more characters?!?" angle.

Theories or not, I myself, just expect around 2 to 4 and no more than that.

Expect the game to go gold very soon. Smash Wii U, IIRC, was pretty much gold at the end of October 2014, then all of November was practically promotion and shipment readying. My guess is that since they wanna keep things hush-hush and make things as smooth as possible, we're no doubt gonna get something next month to indicate that Smash Ultimate is complete and things are tidying up; another video presentation would no doubt indicate that, just like the 50-Fact Extravaganza.

However, I would like to note that once November comes, that'll be the highest chance for any leak to happen, just like before, so it's best to stay on guard.

From what I could tell no one joking around and claiming to be part of "nihilist theory" was joking about making theories as a whole and everyone who does it, just the people who completely attach themselves to one to such an extent they don't think it's fallible. No one is saying none of these theories have validity. And no one is making fun of people who support a theory. If they are, they aren't actually being a nihilist.

The problem is there are literally 3 theories going on, and people basing their speculation on them as if they're fact (which isn't everyone, of course) are forgetting the definition of the word THEORY. Verge got harassed over an unconfirmed THEORY vs. his clearly reputable source. That's kinda annoying.

3 different theories with 3 very different conclusions on how the roster will end up. And yet all of them could VERY easily be wrong. That's why people like myself abstain from "associating" with a theory. Because it's not the basis of an argument for how many characters are left, or who can get in, they are THEORIES. I'm frankly sick of people treating them as anything but.

Actually, I have a crazy story considering leaks. I was at the Smash Bros. College Tailgate Tour with my buddy, and we actually were talking with one of the guys working there as we waited in line. We were talking, and he asked if we wanted to hear something about the game nobody else knew and we said sure. Well, he told us that they already started to work on the DLC (kinda like with Mewtwo in Smash 4) and that it was Rayman. I asked if it was legit, and he said yeah. My friend asked how much he knows, and the guys started talking about the following:

Characters

• The rumor about 7 or so more characters was correct (way to go RelaxAlax for figuring it out!)
• For Echo Fighters, they are Ken (echoed from Ryu) and Viridi (echoed from Palutena)
• An Alolan Trainer (equipped with Popplio, Torracat, and Decidueye) being in a similar case as Isabelle
• Isaac
• Karate Joe
• Banjo & Kazooie (he said these two would be that ultimate, final "hurrah" at the end of the next Smash Bros. Direct)

Stages

• When Sakurai said 105 stages, he was actually lying (so other leaks that say 108 are correct)
• Alter of the Sun and Moon - Will have Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma effect the stage, like Spear Pillar
• The Venus Lighthouse - I asked the guy if it was like in Smash Flash 2, but he said no.
• Spiral Mountain - Being the stage that represents Banjo & Kazooie
• The Beginning - Being the ultimate Smash Bros. they wanted a stage that pays homage to the original game. It's actually the desktop from that opening cutscene
• I remember him mentioning a Rhythm Heaven stage, but I don't any interest in the series so I easily forgot. It's nothing big.

Story
When I asked if there was a story mode, he said of course, which kinda made me feel dumb for asking.

• The Idea of Spirits was correct.
• The main villain is named Chimon and at first wanted to get the Smash Bros. to "end" each other. When that didn't work, he enlisted Hades, who then got Ganondorf, Bowser, and K. Rool (this is more of a prologue)
• Wario is not a villain this time around; however, Mewtwo acts like an Antagonist in the beginning (similar to Meta Knight in the Subspace Emissary)
• Minecraft will have a stage in the story but NO BOSS

I asked if there would be any DLC for the story mode, and he said he didn't know, but it would make sense to have a DLC Season Pass that adds all of the DLC characters into the story (kinda as a last "hurrah" for Ultimate), but that was his prediction, not something he knows for sure, leaving me wonder if the story will feel unfinished until we get this expansion.

The only theory I backed for a little while was Music Theory, but even then I never considered it fact. As Feniraga mentioned, it's good to keep in mind that theories are only just that: Theories. Unless there is ironclad, irrefutable evidence, there is nothing that makes them fact outside of each person's individual bias and speculation. Forcing your theories and speculation onto others and shutting down anything that goes against them doesn't make for very fun speculation IMO, and kinda ruins the whole point of it.

To each their own, though. People are always gonna feel differently on this.

You're completely right about everything except this little tidbit -- the box theory and the blog theory don't actually contradict each other, since one of the projected results of the blog theory is that there could be only 2 newcomers left. Moreover, if you don't believe one of those newcomers to be Incineroar/Pokémon, then this means that the box, blog and music theories can all co-exist and be right simultaneously!

I was about to say it would be funny if none of those three ended up being correct but then we'd need... either only 1 newcomer, or more than 8. lol
