Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

"Although Chrom is considered an Echo Fighter of Roy, he’s more accurately a blend of Marth, Roy, and Chrom."

Chrom contains elements of Chrom? That's some galaxy brain stuff right there.
This is why Robin can ask Chrom how he's supposed to protect Chrom if he can't protect himself.

Marth and Roy sure as hell don't have Aether, after all. He must've learn it from Chrom.

Here is the worst Ultimate tier list known to man.

The sad part is that this one is serious. Not sure why they gave themselves 4 days to do this anyway. Kind of cringeworthy.
So, I actually read through the whole thing. There are... so many things wrong with it. Not even as a tier list, but just... in general. It's like the writer just googled each character and made broad assumptions about each based on the first couple search results.

Like this gem:

As is the case in their own series, Ken is a better playable character than Ryu. While the latter is canonically stronger (depending on how you interpret the lore,) Ken tends to be higher tier when it comes to gameplay if only due to how much faster he is.
He's clearly never actually played a Street Fighter game. He just saw Ryu's low tier in SFV and ran with it. Or this one:

Wario is back and better than ever. He’s a heavy hitter whose farts pack a mean whiff. Wario’s the kind of guy you don’t want biting down on you as there’s a guarantee you’ll come out of his mouth clean. This is to say nothing of his motorcycle, basically a free item he can conjure at will to decimate you with. Wario is truly the vilest high tier character in the entire franchise.
Like, that tells me nothing about him or what he does or why he's placed where he is. This is the equivalent of a high schooler filling space in a report for a book he didn't read.

And he didn't put Daisy/Peach or Simon/Richter together. He separated them by multiple spots.

This **** is hilarious. Everyone should read it.

I mean Snake got around using conventional weapon by instead focusing on being an explosives expert.

A RE character could potentially focus on using explosives too could work, I just wondering how they can feel distinctive enough and have flair from their original games.
I could see Sakurai representing the limited use of ammo in the RE games as part of the moveset.

Teabagging is a valid strategy to make your opponent do dumb mistakes and if ya'll get pissed off by it, it means it's working :^)
In Gears at least, I like basically playing by the book to counter it. They do their dumb mass teabag, multiple down with smokes thing, then the next round when I have the opportunity to do the same... I end it quickly and stand there.

It's a subtle statement of, "I'm better than you. Now let's get to the next round already. I have other **** to do."

Is that really important like durability in FE or ink in Splatoon, though? Most game that involves firearms have limited ammo, it doesn't feel like an interesting way to show off RE.

In Jill's case, an MvC2 setup where she calls in beasts from RE as projectiles, though that would be harder to implement in Smash as it doesn't have imaginary walls on either side of the screen.

In Leon's case, the knife.

Yeah but its unstylish as hell

How can I let people know how feeling it I am if all I can do is crouch

This is a 100% important, integral facet of gameplay and honestly Ultimate is garbage until they patch taunting back into online

If it's a classic RE character (Jill from RE1 or Leon from RE2) it's absolutely an interesting way to show off RE. Resident Evil was the first game to use a scarcity of ammo to elicit fear of the unknown. Every shot counted, and unless you were efficient, there wasn't a guarantee you'd actually have enough ammo to finish the game. This game mechanic, along with the cinematic angles, more or less spawned the survival horror genre. (Alone in the Dark did it first, but not to the degree RE did.)

If we're talking modern RE games, yeah, no. Scarcity of ammo hasn't been a thing since RE3.

This is one of the reasons that I would honestly rather Nemesis or Wesker as an RE Rep - they wouldn't have to deal with the firearms issue preventing them from using most of their arsenal. We already have a human military demolitions expert in the form of Snake, and making any of the RE protags one feels like it doesn't properly represent the character or the franchise.

Why you'd need to let people know anything about you, it's just a fight.

I don't teabag.

But if I'm playing Olimar, you better believe I'm inchworming my way across the stage with his down tilt after a successful KO. If I can't do the infinite down taunt suspender dance, I'll do the next best thing.

Goes to show how little I know.

Not sure if same feeling would carry to Smash but at least I can see it being a mechanic.

Woke: Chrom is an Echo Fighter of himself

It is a crime against humanity that I can't celebrate a kill off the side with this taunt.

I don't taunt after taking a stock, but I like starting with Palutena's "ready when you are". It's perfect for beginning of a match.

One microgame in the Warioware stage is impossible without taunts.
So what? Nobody would win the game and nothing would change. It doesn't effect anything.

Yeah, something like Robin's "ammo" counter, only it doesn't recharge. Say you have a Samurai Edge or magnum, and you get X amount of shots through that stock. And that's it. I think it could actually make the character very unique as you have to plan accordingly and not waste your shots, especially if they made it like Robin in that your best kill moves are reliant upon that ammo. Imagine how commentators in tournaments would play up what the player is going to do with that last shot on the final stock.

Chris already has a similar mechanic in MvC, though he can infinitely reload. So not quite the same. But he's the only person in the game who has to remember to reload his strongest move.

I wish that you could upload videos to Youtube like in Smash 4.

It was a good thing to have.

I've been doing it for years. You can also do that with ROB's Gyromite, K.Rool's Crown, and Diddy Kong's Bananna.

I would love Nemesis as was be a blast to play in UMvC3 and does a perfect job at representing horror part of RE, but I feel like his horrific appearance might discourage them.

I’d love to be wrong, but the exposed flesh and stitched-on face might not fit the games rating.

Personally, I think the reload mechanic is pretty underutilized.

Like Inkling's shield+b to reload ink was interesting and I wish they applied it to more characters like Cloud, and Pokemon Trainer which would've freed up a move-slot so they can do other things. In the case of Robin it could allow him to manually waste a tome to start the cooldown timer earlier.

I'd be cool with seeing Leon in Smash, though he would be tough making a moveset for.

Wouldn't that make those moves only usable when grounded?

Zero Suit doesn't feel as obnoxius to play against so I don't mind her existing. Same with Sheik, she makes me tickle
Sheik: *spends 40 seconds in advantage*
Also Sheik: *deals 34%*
