Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Well for one thing your attitude is not that good. Ending discussion

Your loss. Maybe we can settle this in Smash.

I don't believe that Joker was a cram project. I'd wager that his trailer, with all its unique frames, would've taken three weeks at the least to animate, maybe two if you really push past ethical work schedules - but you'd need a long comfortable time to have it ready by the time its non-negotiable deadline came, while contacting both the Japanese and the English VAs to do a short script. Sakurai's column on the subject also suggests that the request was neither inconvenient nor unexpected, and we already knew none of the Fighter Pass DLCs had had any work on them done yet, so it's not surprising that any of them would've had gameplay footage ready.

This feels like suggesting King K. Rool was thrown into the August Direct just to throw the leakers off, when there was just way too much ready in his reveal for that to have been rushed in. To Vergeben's credit, he never tried to justify how that one slipped out from under him, so I don't know why he's pushing this idea now that Joker is the first DLC because of his tie-ins to the 2017 Game Awards (which isn't something I'd say really defines Persona 5.)

He sounds more commited to this Square Enix idea, even putting his bets down on the franchise being Dragon Quest. Guess we'll see how that turns out.
Eh, he was hellbent on Kencineroar, and look how that turned out for him.

Might be the same "source".

Read The Hunting of the Snark.
Sorry, I'm illiterate.

Just drop it, please.
Maybe the problem is constantly quoting me to persuade me to quote you back.
The solution is to not click the button. Including this post. Just don't touch it. I won't touch it if you don't.

he doesn't want to play smash bruddas with me :(

I dunno. Given how Capcom operate, that sounds more like they don't have the faith in Leon that they do say, Chris, Jill or even Nemesis, for a crossover, let alone Smash.
Disagreed. Leon's been their poster boy many times, including for Capcom's biggest release of 2019. Their MvC choices need context.

MvC2 had Jill likely because, at the time, she had the most iconic design. Chris was just kind of Army-Man-With-Kneepads, and Leon was Police Officer. Jill had the beret and shoulder pads that were more immediately identifiable for a Dreamcast-era game that relied on 2D sprites, and unlike the other two, she'd been the star of two games up to that point. Chris and Leon each had one.

MvC3 cast Wesker as the Capcom side's main villain. As such, they put Chris opposite him, since Chris is Wesker's recurring enemy. Wesker and Leon never met. Then they added Jill as DLC to complete the RE5 Trifecta. In UMvC3, all these characters got recycled, but then they added Nemesis for another heavy and a nod to classic RE. They could have used Leon or Claire or Berkin or any number of other characters, but they chose Nemesis. Probably for variety since MvC3 has SO many basic human shapes.

Finally, MvCi was a trainwreck that they cobbled together using a bunch of assets from MvC3, which is why characters like Spencer, Nemesis and Chris-- specifically RE5 Chris, and not his RE6/RE7 updates-- were recycled, animations and all. While they chose not to add Leon, they chose not to add a lot of things.

Also how many times can one strike back?

I’m so excited for this. I wonder who will do the English voice this time.

EDIT: I also hope they don’t “dumb” down the dubbed version like the original film did.

I wish that they launched on iTunes or Spotify the OSTs for Mewtwo Strikes Back, Pokémon 2 and the Darkrai movie.

Those three are my favourite ones.

You know what's hilarious. I keep forgetting his name is Jack.

If you've ever watched MST3K, there's a recurring terrible actor named Joe Don Baker. And when my brother and I played the RE7 demo, we couldn't remember his first name; we just remembered that they were the Bakers. So we made a joke out of getting chased by Joe Don Baker.

When we played RE7 together on launch night, the joke persisted and we kept running from "Joe Don Baker" and making MST3K references. To this day, every time I see him, I think, "Joe Don Baker".

Well if we're going by designs nowadays, would Leon be considered the most iconic looking in the present??

Well, arguably all three are tied in some shape or form. And in regards for a Smash appearance? Eh, that's iffy.

I dunno man. They didn't even choose Leon for DLC in MvC: I. I'm not saying that they hate him or anything, but I feel he's kinda in a Richter Belmont situation. He might be the most popular within the franchise fanbase, but Chris and Jill tend to be considered the faces of the series, more recongizable.....and uh, well Nemesis has been big enough to make numerous appearances in media spreading across. Dude even got into the Project x Zone series before Kennedy did.

If Leon was added that would make Matthew Mercer have 2 characters in Smash.

...I’d prefer Jill though as everyone should know by now.

Arguably, yes, in large part due to his starring role in RE4, the most critically acclaimed RE game in history, and his upcoming role in the RE2 Remake. I was mentioning Jill's look specifically because she was drawn for an early Dreamcast era fighting game relying on bright colors and popping character designs. 3D modeling changes things entirely. I mean, even Frank West has made it into two fighting games, and he's literally just dude-with-camera.

To be clear, Chris is my favorite character. Jill is my choice for Smash. But Capcom has marketed the hell out of Leon for two decades. Chris and Jill, as I outlined before, were chosen for their major crossover due to timing and circumstance, and likely the fact that both of them are tied to the series's main villain, and each other. Leon is more of a loner. They use all their characters individually, but unlike Chris, Leon's never played second fiddle on his own box art. Any time he's in a game, he's front and center in the promotional art.

I feel like Resident Evil is underestimated as far as characters.

I have a weird feeling it could very well be a DLC pack. Leon, Raccoon City...just not sure about the music.
