Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

What is it then? Literally the main mechanic is fighting. The VERY BASE MECHANIC is fighting. Everything in the game revolves around fighting. In order to win pretty much any mode, you have to fight. It is, for all intents and purposes, a FIGHTING game.
To get really, really specific: It's a Platform Fighter Party Game.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you or anything. >_>

The problem with Capcom is that they're the only videogame company that even comes close to being as genre defining as Nintendo.

Like there's a reason why they and pretty much they alone can do the "Vs. Capcom" shtick.
A huge part of that though is simply that they went for it first. When Capcom had a leg up on all the other fighting game developers, they pushed it, and became synonymous with the genre. Had they not pushed for the Marvel license to make Street Fighter vs. X-Men-- a very bizarre crossover when you think about it-- and continued to support and grow the crossover games, the whole "vs. Capcom" thing would've probably gone the way of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

Gaming history is fascinating to me.

Infinite also overhauled the core gameplay to turn it into a 2v2 system that relied less on incredibly long combos and assist choices. I prefer Infinite from a gameplay perspective, but it would be like if the next Smash Bros. eliminated platforms and every stage was now a walk-off. The last-gen-looking graphics, narrowed down roster, total gameplay overhaul and fickleness of the modern gaming community over social media all lead to its downfall.

Which is sad. It's fun to play. So was SFxTK, and that game was killed by its stupid gem system that nobody wanted.
Oh my god I hope they put that game back in the oven and we’re going to get a bigger better looking version. I prefer Infinite’s gameplay vastly to UMvC3. While I would have preferred a larger roster, I actually really like the one we have because I’m not a huge X-Men fan and think they’ve been over-represented in the past. I’m all for keeping the staples like Storm and Wolverine and even one or two smaller guys like Psylocke and Sentinel, but they should NOT make up the majority of the Marvel side. The game should feature more Marvel characters who stand on their own and were created to headline their own series.

Infinite faced a lot of problems but I often saw people saw it was a shame because the gameplay was so good. It's very easy to go on about what went wrong but it was mentioned pertaining to the roster and so that's what I fouced on.
Still much prefer Super Smash Bros. vs. Jump Stars.
Would be amazing.

How about Chris and Jill as the main reps while Leon and Claire are echoes?
Switch Leon and Chris around (I know it doesn’t matter but Leon has a better association with Nintendo than Chris), and you’be got a deal. Even if I think a RE character wouldn’t be super interesting to play as compared to other potential fighters.

Seriously. How has he never been in a Marvel crossover fighting game.
If we believe the leaks he was gonna be added post-launch. Hopefully if they put the game back in the oven Daredevil survives.

Gaming history boils down to who:
  1. Makes the most memorable franchises
  2. Strikes while the iron is hot
  3. Capitalises on their successes
  4. Doesn't get too overconfident and knows when to back off.
Sega was destroyed by #4, and Sony and Nintendo almost made the same mistake; by which I mean, the Dreamcast was way before it's time, and ended up being really expensive, this meant barely anybody bought it and they went under; the Playstation 3 was also super expensive, and needed a price drop, and the Wii U wasn't marketed well because Nintendo assumed the player base of the Wii would automatically move to the Wii U (they didn't).

They should go the Resident Evil 7 route.

In Japan call it "Super Smash Bros. Special Ultimate," and in the West, call it "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Special".

Slightly off topic, but since we're debating the nuance between saying "DLC" and "Fighters Pass":

Anyone else disappointed that SFV apparently doesn't have a fourth season and slashed their fight money output? Feels like the game's actually winding down.

I'm not ready for it to end. I love this game so much.
I heard that there were rumors of a VERY early plan for a SF6.

But I feel like it’s too soon too. SFIV lasted for 7 years and SFV is currently about to enter into it’s third year. But honestly, I don’t even think we’re done with it yet. SFV already brought itself back up with AE, and we’ll at least have a finished Season 4.

Also, SFV is kinda of an example of how long DLC can go. SFV has 3 PASSES with 18 characters along with Kage. Of course, AE made 12 of those free, but it shows that if a company cares, they can keep supporting a game for as long as they want.

But don’t do the in-game advertising.

Exactly. Cutting a good chunk of the roster will most likely end up with most of them returning as paid DLC.

They're in a bind, but that's in 8+ years from now. Anything can change.
Tbh, I think the main reason we'll see cuts the next time might be because of licensing issues.
The Switch is a success, we won't see a new console until 2022 at the very least. If a new Smash would be made, there's no rush to get it out like Ultimate was(since bringing back everyone was the reason we only got 6 unique newcomers).
Even then, a port to the next generation with just a focus on adding a bunch of new characters + all DLC included would sell incredibly well and that'd be all they really need.

I feel ya. I get destroyed whenever I go on.

*Sigh* One of these days I'll get it...
xD I remember the Brawl days, I won once by pure accident, and I was fighting against a Martha, Meta Knight and I don't remember who else while I used Ike, but Martha was the one that was still standing and the guy almost got me until I stood back up by pressing A...and ded. (And funny, before that, I had SD'd)

I was so shocked I had won, but I thought "Next time I won't be so lucky...I better just play with friends." :p

The Dreamcast died for a litany of reasons that had nothing to do with its pricepoint though. It actually had the largest console launch in history at the time, before the PS2 inevitably eclipsed it.

It was dead in the water before it even had the chance to get going due to everything they lost during the Saturn era and the sheer presence of the PS2. Unlike Nintendo, who had the portable market to fall back on when their home console market floundered, Sega's backup-- the arcades-- also floundered. They just hemorrhaged money from 1994-2001. No company can sustain that. They lost the rights to the Sega CD in court, launched two failed consoles within a year of one another (32x and Saturn), alienated retailers over the Saturn launch, lost many third party developers to Sony, and then launched the Dreamcast too early-- which was also stupidly easy to play pirated games on, hurting their software sales in the process.

Sega made ALL the wrong decisions for nearly a decade before they were in way too deep to turn it around. Which is a shame, because the Dreamcast really was such a fantastic console.

So usually I dont really humour these leaks especially when they have Geno and such but let's just talk about it for fun. It's probably not real as the guy knows far too much but he seems certain that the first thing Nintendo reveals will be correct so let's humour it for a bit XD

There are a few things in this leak I can totally see happening but some things are way off the rails.

So for starters it's a Nintendo leak for 2019 and it has all the contents of the fighting pass among various other titles.

3DS
>If you can't tell, Nintendo is not really focusing on the 3DS anymore. Very few new 3DS games are to be released.
>Pokken Tournament 3D will be released in mid 2019. Downgraded visuals but pretty much all the same content as Pokken Tournament DX for Switch. New 3DS exclusive. No online support.
>Splatoon: Squid Ops is a 2.5D Splatoon game to be released in 2019, and the last first party Nintendo game on 3DS. It's a side scroller with an emphasis on single player, but it will have multiplayer features as well. Also coming to Switch as a budget downloadable title. No online support on 3DS, but yes on Switch.
>Other titles coming to 3DS in 2019 from other publishers: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, and Tales of Symphonia (also coming to Switch). Also a bunch of indie games and shovelware that nobody cares about. 2019 is the end of 3DS basically.

Switch
>F-Zero S is in development, but won't be out till 2020. Brand new F-Zero game.
>Super Mario 64 HD and Ocarina of Time HD are both in development, and will be out mid/late 2019.
>Pokemon Dark Past and Pokemon Bright Future are Gen 8. This one is being kept heavily under wraps so I don't actually know much about it.
>Metroid Prime 4 is still being worked on. Expect it by Christmas 2019.
>Daigasso! Band Brothers ON, a new game in the rhythm game series will be out in 2019 but it probably won't come out in English.
>Bunch of third party ****. Persona 5 R, Xenosaga Trilogy, Tales of Symphonia, The Witcher 3, Tekken 7 and Soul Calibur VI are probably the most notable things. Lots of ports...

Smash
>Season 1 DLC characters are Joker, Geno, Lloyd, KOS-MOS and Fawful. Yes, they're all RPG characters. Anybody who tells you any other characters are coming to Smash in S1 are lying liars who lie a lot.
>There will be more seasons. Duh.

Huge red flags: F Zero game.... F zero seems to be dead for too long now. I cant ever see a revival of it. Another Pokken tournament game? I just can't see that happening at all unless it's a complete port of DX. Splatoon on DS? Eh ok ..... he says 3ds is not the focus but lists so many 3DS games. Symphonia, FF VII coming to DS could happen but it's surprising that they would also make a switch version of Symphonia like this guy claims.
POKEMON.... yeah pokemon has stupid titles usually or weird ones but Dark past and Bright future? Okay I mean we got pokemon titles called X and Y so it's not out of the realm of possibilities... but if it's being kept heavily under wraps then I can't see this guy knowing even the titles.

Real stuff in this leak IMO: Xenosaga trilogy coming to switch. Last year in April Namco Bandai redid their trademark for Xenosaga Episode III which somewhat hinted at a revival of the series. We got KOS-MOS and T-elos both in Xenoblade 2 so those have to be hints! We already know Persona 5 R is happening but this could be piggybacking. The witcher 3 coming to switch could be possible as Mass effect 3 did go to Wii U..... ALSO.... Soulcalibur VI has been heavily rumoured for switch by Vergeben but it appeared to be false information at first. I can still see it coming to switch though FOR SURE.

Smash stuff (AKA the only thing people care about) IF THIS leak is real then we can conclude the following: Xenosaga is being revived to have KOS-MOS in smash and it's the same thing with Lloyd. I can totally believe these two bits because smash promotion for KOS-MOS is something I could see coming. She's in Xenoblade 2 etc very popular with crossovers and much more. It would be a perfect gift from Sakurai to Takahashi. Of course, two namco reps is a bit of a stretch. Now let us go to the real problem of this leak..... which are Geno and Fawful specifically. Fawful would be a very cool fighter but we literally got a dlc mario character in Piranha plant already..... and we are supposed to believe Geno is coming too? Two mario characters... one being from SE and two Namco? Things are sounding fishy as hell in the smash part of this leak. The reason I say this is because of the Erdrick rumours we know of. Right now i'm pretty convinced Geno is out as he's a spirit and the SE list rumours, etc. If by chance this turns out being true i'd be super ecstatic though. Hell, if KOS-MOS doesnt make it and I get Xenosaga HD... I'd be a very happy person the same. More seasons is something I can see happen for sure.

Sorry for the text wall but what do you guys think of this leak? Do you think "the first thing it gets right" will make everything else right? Do you think it's real? Do you think some stuff might be real or safe guesses? Discuss!

how do you accurately represent how a blind man fights
It's not first person. The fact that he's blind doesn't need to be represented at all.

He's a ****ing goddamn ninja with dual batons he can ricochet all over the place.

The Patient 0 of Sega's issues is probably the 32x, they should have focused more effort on the Saturn, over an extension to the Mega Drive that nobody was interested in.
Also, an actual Sonic game on the Saturn wouldn't have hurt.

Ugh, Shulk still plays like he's got bricks attached to his feet.

This Monoado Roulette, while better than the button mashing, just replaces its inconvenience with a whole nother kind.

Discuss!

I was laughing at the reactions to the Pokemon Gen 8 titles, as if Game Freak wouldn't come up with silly names themselves. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were harmless, but the moves they came up with for Let's GO Pikachu and Eevee were narm-inducing. I wouldn't put it past them to name the new titles "Pokemon: Dark Past & Bright Future". It plays with time-travel just based on the names alone, it'd probably reference the fifth generation, and it'd most definitely tie in with the Sinnoh remakes (...right?).

Other than that, this is just a bunch of useless info until it's proven true. The funniest thing about this "leak" is that all of the characters mentioned are essentially JRPG characters. Going by the strong possibility that Smash DLC ends after the Fighter's Pass, it'd be weird making it exclusively about turned-based games. Still, I can see Nintendo revisit more DLC in the future as some have said on here. I'm not counting on it, but I'm not ruling it out either. KOS-MOS or not, I still want the Xenosaga trilogy. When the **** is it happening, Namco?

>If you can't tell, Nintendo is not really focusing on the 3DS anymore. Very few new 3DS games are to be released.
We just gonna ignore the big hit that Etrian Odyssey Nexus is for February 2nd of 2019, huh.
Pokemon Dark Past and Pokemon Bright Future are Gen 8. This one is being kept heavily under wraps so I don't actually know much about it.
I laughed

I laughed harder at Fawful. This is the literal who people have been asking for.
