Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Hasnt RE sold more WW than Megaman and Street Fighter
It has sold over 85 million units. Bests TOM CLANCY, Dragon Quest, STAR WARS, Halo, Tomb Raider, Just Dance, Donkey Kong, Crash, Metal Gear, Elder Scrolls, Monster Hunter, Tekken, Pac Man, Street Fighter, Uncharted, HARRY POTTER, DRAGON BALL, Super Smash Bros, Kirby, Mortal Kombat, Fall Out, Megaman, JAMES BOND, etc....

MANY franchises it's outsold including Smash itself and franchises with cross market appeal like Tom Clancy, Star Wars, James Bond, Dragonball, and Harry Potter.

The series is popular.

Compared to Tails and Lara Croft as individuals, none of the RE characters are really up there.

I stand corrected.
The main 4 all have their levels of success.

Leon, Chris, and Jill are probably megawatt to many audiences from their times in the games and movies and having so many recurring roles in both. Not to mention other crossovers.

Claire has had her name made ultra recognizable to non-gamers by being the video game character the movies focused on the most.

I think because Sakurai said the team for DLC is already smaller than the base game and will continue to shrink as the DLC progresses.

It really is though. Anyone at my work knows what Resident Evil is-- but I had to explain to them what a Wii U was. When the Switch came out.

You're absolutely right that Lara Croft is a more iconic character than anyone in Resident Evil, but Tomb Raider lacks the Nintendo history that RE has. Not that Nintendo history is necessary to be added as a newcomer, but if we're arguing obvious omissions, I'd put Resident Evil far above Tomb Raider for that. Lara Croft would be a very cool guest character, not an overdue addition.
The Resident Evil movies definitely helped the general public become aware of the series even though some of the movies were "questionable"

I'd say Jill Valentine is pretty popular. Agreed not as popular as Tails or Lara Croft, but since Jill shares protagonist duties with Chris, Leon, Claire, Rebecca, Barry(sorta), Billy, Ada and Sheva that's to be expected.

That said as much as I love Chris and Jill; Wesker would be a fine choice for a Smasher.
He doesn't rely on guns(because...ya know...he's basically Agent Smith from the Matrix, capable of moving at superhuman speeds) and has been infected with so much T-virus I'd imagine he could showcase some mutations in some moves and still remain true to form...plus he's the most popular antagonist of the series.

Everyone wanted villains right?

Hell, I wasn't even down for a RE fighter originally but the more I think about Wesker the more I'd want to buy him.

I'm sorry for this off-topic question. but WHY Alph still in his ssb4 head icon?
We don't have his Ultimate render as an emote yet.

I think because Sakurai said the team for DLC is already smaller than the base game and will continue to shrink as the DLC progresses.
That's.... perfectly normal regardless of the amount.

Wave 2 was a pipedream from the very start for people who thought Wave 2 was going to be a disappointment, I dunno why we treating its deconfirmation like a big deal when the DLC plan was clearly laid off to us back in November 1st.

Besides we're gonna be having 82. 82 playable characters, its better than nothing and were lucky Sakurai even managed to pull it off considering he nearly couldn't get :ultcloud:back.

you mean like. literally re4 and two spinoff games? i think tomb raider has more games on nintendo consoles than resi does
Resident Evil 2 on N64, Resident Evil REmake (exclusive at launch), Resident Evil 0 (exclusive at launch), Resident Evil 4 (exclusive at launch), RE1, 2, 3, CV all ported to GCN, RE Deadly Silence, Revelations (exclusive at launch), and now Revelations 2 with exclusive motion controls and RE7 somehow fit onto the Switch via cloud gaming.

Tomb Raider games on Nintendo consoles: Legend, Anniversary and Underworld (which was a godawful Wii port).

At this point, I'm considering learning how to mod models into Smash.

I suppose the best I'll ever get is Lucina Lyn and Ganondorf DF.

As someone who doesn't do horror, I'm not really the person to talk to regarding the popularity of those characters.

I have at least heard all of the character's names, though (even if it's due to memes and stuff).

I think the problem with RE is probably the fact that the franchise's protagonist role is spread a little too thin.

I'll use Castlevania as an example, the protagonist is more than likely going to be "a Belmont", or Alucard (obviously, the series goes far, far deeper than that). This meant that the choice of character boiled down to Simon or Alucard (Sakurai himself said as much).

With Resident Evil, who do you pick? Jill, Chris, Leon or Claire would all be good picks, but you can't have all of them. At best, you could have Chris and Leon or Jill and Claire (one echoing the other), but even with that, you miss out on the other half.

We'll get a generic zombie as the RE character because just picking protagonists is boring and everyone knows zombies well :troll:

Alternatively, the tofu from RE2 would be hilarious.

The only reason we need a Smash 6 is so we can get Etrian Odyssey music, and Alucard and Shovel Knight playable

Sakurai is an EO fan, so we could get EO music with Joker.

Because of a Sakurai quote in which he said that the staff will be getting smaller and smaller as they get to each character. That and the fact that the DLC isn't being made by first party developers; Sora and Bandai Namco probably want their talent to start moving to bigger, more demnading projects sooner rather than later.

Oh, so this means wave 2 is a bunch of notable kusoge since they always have staff available

Wave 2 is something I could easily see happening just as I could easily see it not happening.

To each their own, of course, but I would temper expectations for it. People thought Splatoon 2 was gonna get an extension on content, but here we are.

A fair point. But to counter it:

:ultmarth::ultchrom::ultike::ultroy::ultlucina::ultrobin::ultcorrin:

The fact that there are many doesn't necessitate none of them being worthwhile additions. Chris, Jill and Leon are kind of the holy trinity of the series, while Wesker and Nemesis are the very clear villains. Claire and Rebecca are the only two other characters that could arguably be put along side the others as series mainstays and immediately recognizable protagonists, then they're followed by the minor characters and one-offs, like Barry, Billy, Helena, Sheva, etc.

Really, they can't go wrong in picking Jill, Chris, Leon or Wesker. They'd just have to pick only one of them. For Nintendo's history, I'd say it has to be either Jill in her REmake look, or Leon in his RE2/RE4 look, either one.

smash 6 is going to have most third party characters cut (most likely most of ultimate's dlc will be gone), pokemon trainer will be gone and replaced by charizard again because that's just easier to develop, and also i'm willing to bet that the echoes will be gone, but new ones will be added in

just my predictions

During Smash 4 speculation, most RE talk I saw was directed to which was the best Nintendo fit. After Cloud and now Joker, Sakurai should just go for whoever's most popular or who he thinks is the best choice.

Barry is more on par with Rebecca. RE1, cameo in 3, Gaiden and Rev2

I don't think Smash 6 will even happen until like 6-8 years go by after Ultimate.

And when it does come, everyone will hate it because it's probably gonna give the roster a huge shake-up and that inevitably means big cuts.

To be clear, I'm not arguing it has to be a Nintendo-specific choice. I simply feel that, if the goal is to get a Resident Evil character in, picking a design that has ties to Nintendo when so much of the series already has strong ties to Nintendo makes sense. For instance, putting in RE6/CGI movies Leon in over the RPD uniform Leon or RE4 Leon wouldn't make much sense. Or MvC3 Battlesuit Jill over the original REmake Jill.

Unless they decide one character in the series is far and away the most popular one despite no Nintendo ties (a la Cloud), I feel as though catering to Nintendo nostalgia is something they'll want to do. And I don't feel like anyone from RE fits that bill. Nintendo already has some of the most iconic and recognizable designs in the series on their consoles.

there's no way to handle the next smash bros game in a way that's good for business or for fan appeal, that's what's bothering me the most

nothing can top ultimate, this is just a fact.

The thing about the FE characters is that:

a) Fire Emblem is a first party property.
b) besides Marth, all of them got in due to fortuitous happenstance (by which I mean "the timing was right for them").

If Smash Bros. was a Capcom fighting game, you can be damn sure we'd get all of Chris, Jill, Leon, Claire, Rebecca, Wesker and Nemesis, but since Smash is a Nintendo Fighting game, we can only get one (two if we stretch it), and it's more than likely going to be a protag (i.e. not Wesker or Nemesis).
