Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

In the original games there was one character for every series. Except Mario, and Pokemon. From the beginning they had more characters than every one else.

I think that's funny.
Jigglypuff and Luigi were last minute additions based upon Kirby and Mario too. Falcon is kind of odd. He's based upon Samus to some degree, but he likely was based upon some of the old beta Dragon King characters as well. Ness used Mario's body for his framework.

So it was more meant to be 8 series, and the fact we got two more was pretty lucky.

oh yeah its a very complete game, i just think that it makes no sense business wise for them to do this. maybe if the dlc does really well nintendo will mandate it, i dunno
I agree Nintendo should opt for more DLC after the first year. I just don't believe they should force Sakurai to do anything beyond at best supervise to some degree, and they honestly don't need to. His team is doing a lot of work and getting way more credit. The man rarely bothered to reference his team before, having a lot of pride. He's truly matured. :)

What's so important about the Casino?
looks great, sounds great, and even though it's actually quite near the end of the game, its positioning in the intro makes it an iconic location to the game.

given the above, it's obvious that they'll go with mementos instead.

Sakurai said:
As we make the DLC fighters, the team involved will continue to shrink. Until now I’ve been overseeing hundreds of peoples’ work, so my work as a director is about to get relatively light. Of course, we have to plan the next DLC character, and the next… and so on and so forth. I planned in advance and set aside some funds, though, so we’ve got a bit of a surplus compared to earlier on.
And before you guys keep going on a running rampage, I’ll explain what this statement implies.

Simply put, DLC requires far less development staff than the amount needed for the base game. The only stuff Sakurai’s team would be working on right now are 6 fighters (1 who is nearly complete), 5 Stages, a couple of Mii Costumes, and a couple of soundtracks. Compare that to the base game where you needed several more artists, designers, programmers, composers, etc. that needed to work on 100+ Stages, 76 Total Fighters, 800+ Music, CGI cutscenes, Graphics, Art Pieces, and a lot more.

It’s understandable why the team would shrink as a result because there would be no point in keeping so many people in charge of much less content.

A casino stage would be cool. I don't gamble, but I love the casino aesthetic.
I still cannot ****ing believe it took this long We have Kirby Planet Robobot which tbf didn't exist at all until Ultimate's development but we also had Sonic ****. Some of the most well-known areas in Sonic are casinos so why did we get TWO GODDAMN GREEN HILLS

Well Sakurai didn't want to seem biased. Though honestly out of all of the original 12 I feel Yoshi fits the crowd of "Wouldn't be all too popular a request" alongside Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff and Ness
I think you forget that Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story were very popular games, as were both F-Zero games, Jigglypuff was popular in the Anime, and Ness was the out of left field character.

Y’Know I still wonder why Yoshi was put in Smash 64 over like... Peach, Bowser, Zelda, Wario, Diddy Kong, Mewtwo, Marth, King Dedede or Meta Knight.
If I remember right (could absolutely be wrong because I'm going by memory here), Bowser, Mewtwo, Marth and Peach were all candidates for Smash 64, but had to be cut due to budget/time.

Had they all gotten in, the roster representation would've looked like:

Mario: :ultmario::ultluigi::ultyoshi::ultpeach::ultbowser:
Pokemon: :ultpikachu::ultjigglypuff::ultmewtwo:
Everyone else gets one: :ultlink::ultsamus::ultkirby::ultfalcon::ultdk::ultness::ultfox::ultmarth:

I'm guessing Bowser, Peach and Mewtwo were cut since their series had plenty of representation already, and Marth was cut since Fire Emblem wasn't in the West. As to why they picked Yoshi over Peach or Bowser, no idea. Probably personal preference by the developers. Yoshi had potential for an extremely unique moveset.

I meant that if they weren't included in 64. IDK, general opinion on Yoshi always looked like "Wow he's a thing!" to me, can't speak of F-Zero as I genuinely wouldn't know, Jigglypuff was being phased out of the anime iirc and Ness being in 64 is the only reason anyone knows what the hell Earthbound is tbh

Yoshi's games are usually not super huge in reception, but Yoshi is super marketable and F-Zero was basically only popular on the SNES and GBA commercially.

Earthbound 2 was in development for the 64 though

no vocal p5 tracks is arguably more disappointing than potentially not getting any more dlc
as dissapointing it would be, the dungeons have great music minus the casino (because lyrics) so Sakurai could still do some good stuff

sonic has alot of casino stages because sega before making videos games were making slot and pinball machines for casinos
Joker already being a sega characters and having a casinos stage would be fitting

I disagree considering Yoshi is a lot more well known and marketable then most of the cast of any game, even a lot of the Pokémon or Mario characters, definitely more well known then Samus or Fox for starting roster and it, at the time, looked like Yoshi was prime to have a very successful side series (and would have had Nintendo not dropped the ball).
Everyone knows Yoshi.
Jigglypuff was still known well enough, but mostly in due to being able to rework Kirby into her easily.

Peach wasn't.
Or if she was, no legitimate source of information has claimed that.

But signs point to not, because when Sakurai mentioned Bowser, Mewtwo, and Dedede, he COULD have mentioned Peach too since she was also in the Top 10 on the same poll.

Nah, Melee.

Melee added some essential characters like Peach and Bowser, Zelda and Ganondorf. Yoshi I think is an essential character, if he wasn't in 64 he'd be in Melee.
On the other hand we didn't get Wario, Diddy Kong, Dedede, or MK, all characters that people argue should have been in Smash way earlier, until 3 games in.

Donkey Kong seems to be getting on quite well.
Luigi's Mansion has 3 games now, which isn't bad for a game that started out as a cult classic.
WarioWare has been up and down, but it's still pretty well regarded, and Wario Land put out some absolute classics before it's indefinite hiatus.

Peach wasn't planned, but:ultkingdedede: was...

i meant like, at any point in their history. wario series still has the ball firmly on the ground imo since we haven't had a wario land game in over a decade. i love warioware but its not the same

Ah, that's right. Dedede.

Interesting then that he removed Two of only three heavy/large characters.

Is Wario Land even necessary nowadays?
Nintendo has so many 2D platformer series (Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country, Kirby, Yoshi's Island, etc.), that I feel like Wario Ware made a lot more sense to pursue than Wario Land...

So I thought kf a moveset for 2B, but it probably sucks cause it’s based off what she does in Soul Calibur since that’s where my knowledge of her comes from.

Wario Land separates itself from the others with it's puzzle-oriented platforming, more freedom to go where you want (Shake-It doesn't really follow either of those though) and a larger focus on collectibles. There's a lot of potential to make a great Wario Land game that could stand out from Nintendo's other 2D platformers.

Oh boy, more potential salt storms.
At least it means Sakurai acknowledges the characters...

Mii Fighter costumes are still better than Assist Trophies, as you can still play as them to an extent...

I never get why people think Mii Costumes are terrible...
