Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird Pokémon don’t have more sexual dimorphism? Like, I understand why they don’t from a development perspective but... it just looks weird to me for certain Pokémon. Especially Incineroar.
I kinda agree, but most female Incineroar fan designs have been...less than ideal.

Just cuz she's a girl doesn't mean she can't be ripped!!!

That makes sense. The Inkling girl's design is actually really good. If it was a game where the main character had a set design like Mario, she'd fit the mold perfectly.
TBH all of the character designs in Splatoon look super good. Part of why I adore that series is its aesthetic; it's just so perfect to me, lol. Probably helps that I grew up with Spongebob and Finding Nemo, so I already had a love for sea creature characters because of those things. :p

Interesting that you bring up Mario, though, considering Splatoon was almost a Mario game! I wonder if that influenced some of the character designs at all? A lot of Splatoon's characters would fit right in with Mario, which is probably why people do cross-over stuff with them so much. It just works, and TBH I'd love to see Nintendo do an actual cross-over with the two someday. Maybe through amiibo gear in Splatoon 3?

smash ultimate has 23 playable female characters, only a few of which are even somewhat sexualized. this is probably the most progressive fighting game in the world, which unfortunately is still not saying much

anyway dj octavio should have been a boss in ultimate

My love of character design and sea creatures drew me to this game in the first place. That and "You're a kid now, you're a squid now!"

i mean probably but i'm just saying. i guess the pokemon are just gender neutral characters?
well pokemon trainers pokemon could be either sex because those 3 dont have differences between sexes. Lucario has that deep voice that that cant be a chick and mewtwo has no sex in game

Actually interesting we switched to this topic because something I realized when working on movesets for Cynthia’s Pokémon is that most of her Pokémon (including the ones that I think are Smash viable) are canonically female (stats for Platinum):

FD0F2FC4-68B7-4C99-B81D-57E0BE807417.jpeg

Meaning adding her would make three more playable female fighters in one, four altogether.

Aside from that the only other female characters off the top of my head that I want in Smash are Dixie Kong and Shantae even though they’re both Spirits.

i mean obviously most of the pokemon are designed to be male in smash bros, that's just very obvious, BUT you can think of them however you want as long as there's no definitive gender trait (and even then they can just be trans lol)

So you’re saying you want female Incineroar to have boobs?

I remember a joke Mario timeline thing that was kind of poking fun at the Zelda timeline that said Splatoon happened after Mario failed in Super Mario Sunshine heh.

I always knew Bowser Jr. would destroy us all.

What I never expected was that the Bloopers would be the ones to pick up the pieces...

Did somebody say Gardevoir?

The way I see it, Gardevoir are designed with a feminine touch but were originally intended to be androgynous. Like Tolkien's Elves.

Then the internet happened and The Pokemon Company deiced to role with it by adding the male counterpart Gallade and taking waifu culture too seriously with Mega Evolution.

Instead now they have one very masculine starter, one very feminine starter, and one in the middle.
oh yeah i forgot about trans lady primarina

on that note forget that, we don't need gender dimorphism for the starters

Why do male Gardevoir actually exist?

So we’re talking about female characters in Smash and Pokémon?

...OK

*Insert obligatory KOS-MOS/Elma/Edelgard support here*

As for Pokémon gender differences, I think they try to minimize the actual scale of differences between genders to prevent one from standing out over the other (unless they are identified separately on the Pokédex)

Either that or they just design a Pokémon with one gender in mind and they either tack on the other gender or exclude it.

they're fictional characters you can do anything with, including making them trans

but canonically all primarina are ladies
:122: i dont think nintendo designed them this way to be argued over :122:

I never really cared much for pokemon genders. They're a very minor feature in the main series and rarely have any impact on their actual traits. If they announced that Smash Charizard was canonically female tomorrow I'd be 100% cool with it. It's still Charizard to me either way. Heck, if they announced Smash Incineroar was I'd still be completely okay with it (and also find it kind of funny).

Male Gardevoir has never really bothered me either, mostly because I'm not at all attracted to it. I don't find the idea of a guy in a dress particularly disturbing either.
