Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

For references sake, here’s what I have as of now:

Neutral Attack:
Dash Attack: Strikes downward with her claw
Forward Tilt: Steps forward and performs a headbutt
Down Tilt: Spins around and strikes with her tail
Up Tilt:

Side Smash: Slashes forward with her claws twice
Down Smash: Similar to Charizard, she stomps on the ground creating a small earthquake hitting from both sides
Up Smash:

Neutral Aerial: Somersaults with her back fin damaging opponents
Forward Aerial:
Back Aerial: Backhands with her fin and spins back around
Up Aerial:
Down Aerial: Dives forward at a diagonal angle

Pummel: Bites her opponent
Forward Throw:
Back Throw
:
Down Throw: Throws opponent to the ground and uses fins to dig at them, hits 3 times
Up throw:

Neutral Special: Brick Break, A shield breaking move. Garchomp’s fin glows and she slashes forward with it

Side Special: Dragon Rush, uses Charizard’s custom move of the same name, Garchomp dashes at the opponent while spinning and will carry the opponent while damaging them on contact.

Up Special: (?) Giga Impact, flies up and dives down at a diagonal angle, landing with an explosive force, similar to Incineroar’s

Down Special: Pokémon Change (since she’s part of Cynthia’s team)

Taunts
Neutral-Lets our a mighty roar

I know I'm a little late on the Updated Information on Joker, but is it possible Joker was probably not intended to be 1st DLC character? Maybe he was actually either suppose to be the 3rd, 4th or last character revealed, considering the way his reveal was handled. It seemed like the 1st DLC character was going to be revealed much later(probably January), but Nintendo's decision shuffled the DLC development during when the VGAs were getting close.
What updated information?

I'm kinda getting settled back in with everything (I haven't even set up my Switch back yet) and am currently at work.

What's been going on recently?
Not much. This thread has actually been a little barren now that the game is out. I imagine it'll fill out a bit more once the dlc ball really starts rolling but still.

I might have to actually go in other threads now!

How long until you think gameplay will be revealed then?
Probably by the next Direct (which is probably coming around January-February). Mewtwo had only a model when he was first shown off, and I believe he got footage like two or so months later when Lucas got announced. If I had to guess a release date...April, probably? I don't see it being much later than that.

He'd be more broken than Brawl Meta Knight because he screws the rules.

During any fight, you can pay a small fee to increase your Stocks/Score, damage the enemy, increase or decrease the timer, gain a Final Smash or any number of beneficial effects.

The only real thing about Ultimate is the lack of new female characters that AREN'T Mario princesses. Yeah we've got female Inklings but in terms of a true female character newcomer, Daisy is it. That was kind of why I was hoping that Chun Li and not Ken would be the second Street Fighter rep and the first true female newcomer that isn't a Mario princess. Here's hoping that there will be a female newcomer among the last 4 DLC characters, though the odds of seeing someone like 2B-even though she's a reploid and is already featuring in Soul Calibur VI, Lara Croft, Aloy, or Tracer are extremely slim.

Then let me make it clear that that's EXACTLY what the word shallow means, to only care about the looks. If you don't believe me, you can look that up.
shal·low
/ˈSHalō/
adjective
adjective: shallow; comparative adjective: shallower; superlative adjective: shallowest
  1. 1.
    of little depth.
"serve the noodles in a shallow bowl"
    • situated at no great depth.
"the shallow bed of the North Sea"
    • varying only slightly from a specified or understood line or direction, especially the horizontal.
      "a shallow roof"
    • not exhibiting, requiring, or capable of serious thought.
Hmm.

Well by this definition liking a pokemon for its design isn't shallow if you put thought into why you like its design. That said, any decent artist could tell you that making or recognizing good design requires some degree of thought.
Problem is that that would be factually wrong to call it shallow because being shallow means caring about looks first and foremost. The stats are a completely different trait from the looks. Plus, the stats go DEEPER than the looks by going into the DEPTH of the metagame. So you really can't call it shallow at all since you're caring more about the depth of the monster. It's not like they're useful just to me. Hundreds of people besides me are using top tier mons in actual tournaments and winning with them as we speak.
Fair enough, but I also said I didn't think liking a pokemon for its competitive usefulness isn't shallow.

Besides, if you asked me why I liked my favorite pokemon for reasons other then competitive usefulness, I could probably give you reasons why. I could go into depth about what I like or don't like about their designs. Then there's personal and nostalgic attachment from using them in their teams, which I'd understand if you couldn't relate but is still a legitimate reason to like something.

And even if you want to get into stats and such the game just simply isn't balanced with competitive play in mind. That's the real reason every pokemon can be useful in single player. Fighting AI is very different from fighting real players, and there's other factors to consider such as how quickly they gain experience, what levels pokemon evolve at, and how rare or difficult they are to find. Starter pokemon generally have flexible stats that make them very easy to fit on most single player teams, evolve at a steady pace, and have fire/water/grass typings which are generally useful in a lot of areas of most game's stories.

i appreciate lady representation in smash but also like we got 7 new lady characters in smash 4 (if you include robin and corrin which you absolutely SHOULD) which is almost half of the new characters

and in ultimate we have leaf, who is the very blatant best version of the pokemon trainer, dark samus, who is a cool monster lady, isabelle, inklings wait have you actually seen ultimate's roster

March or April. Piranha Plant is what they're primarily finishing now, and it should be done by February. I imagine every character will be about 2 months apart from each other, which will be a nice pace for the year.

Quick! What do I need for voice overs?

I may or may not be working on a project that involves me breaking out my best silly Nintendo voices.

Dark Samus is never referred to as "it," but rather exclusively referred to as "she" in both the Metroid games and in Smash itself (save for the error in her Smash blog post, which was later corrected).

Some people erroneously call her "it" because Metroid Prime in the first game was an "it," and Dark Samus is part Metroid Prime, but it is mainly Samus's DNA+Phazon+the Phazon Suit, and therefore is female.

It's bizarre how many people insist on referring to Dark Samus as "it" when she's never been referred to as such in any capacity, and by definition is biologically female. So I don't blame you for picking that up from other people, I just don't understand where the misconception even started.

Female Inkling and Female Corrin are canon no matter what anyone says to me, so there's two more girls.
Splatoon's marketing is pretty much centered around Inkling Girl. What makes it funnier is that the developers themselves admitted they designed her first and the boy came as an afterthought. They basically went "Oh yeah, we should probably have boy Inklings too, huh?" :p

Yeah, it's weird. I think I started calling her an "it" for a little while because I thought the blog post was a change in canon, but I later went back to calling her a "her" since that's what the games call her.

...That's a lot of "her"s in that sentence I wrote there. There was probably a better way of writing that, but meh, oh well.

That makes sense. The Inkling girl's design is actually really good. If it was a game where the main character had a set design like Mario, she'd fit the mold perfectly.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird Pokémon don’t have more sexual dimorphism? Like, I understand why they don’t from a development perspective but... it just looks weird to me for certain Pokémon. Especially Incineroar.

Even if they hadn't corrected the blog post, I would've still considered it in error, since the Metroid games themselves and previous Smash trophy descriptions referred to her as "she," so I don't see why a simple blog post would be considered more canonical than the games themselves, especially when the character won't be returning in future Metroid games, so there wouldn't be any point to changing the canon at this point.

I was actually expecting the Palutena's Guidance for Dark Samus to have an error or two in it, given how unfamiliar people in general are with the character, but I was pleasantly surprised. Whoever wrote it actually did their research.
