Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Are you talking about this particular person or the developers?

Because either way, it makes zero sense. They're either making a baseless claim or trying to derail [somewhat] meaningful conversation.
The person, not the developers. Feels like an attempt to kinda derail the conversation to me.

I've noticed this is a trend with this user. It feels as if this is his sole purpose in at least this thread.

He comes in makes some really out there post with no basis and then just when you feed him he rolls with it.

Honestly. I don't like name calling or anything, but he's pretty obviously a troll.

I see talk of an improved stage builder, but what I really want is a character builder. A bit like the Miis, but better.

It'd give you five or so different body shapes to choose from. After that, you could fill in different parts of the character's body with colors. And you'd choose how big the character is.

Next you'd do the stats. You'd get 40 points to distribute to the character's walk/run speed, air speed, jump height, and weight. Other stats are generated by a formula.

For each of the character's moves, you'd choose existing moves from other characters. So you could use Fox's jab, Mr. Game & Watch's forward smash, Meta Knight's forward air, and Greninja's standard special.

It'd be fun trying to create the most viable character possible.

Oh, I haven't seen him before! Thanks for letting me know :)

As for Isabelle, I think she's likely, and I like the whole idea of her entire playstyle being the "clumsy secretary" and pretty much everything she does being accidental. I think that will take a lot of creative liberties, but I think her popularity and the massive size of what can be pulled from Animal Crossing can work for her.

I am not the biggest AC fan so my knowledge on it is limited, but that's what I see with the information I know at this current time.

Octolings would work better as enemies in an Adventure Mode/revamped Smash Run. Not sure why people are pulling for them other than "we need more splatoon reps".
As someone that follows this thread closely, that is a major misconception that should not be spread.

Most of us that expect Octolings expect it because they are very feasible as last-minute clones due to Octoling's large fanbase in the Splatoon community, regardless of how neutral most of us might feel towards the idea.

That would be pretty awesome. Mix and match fighters, so you could technically have a Pikachu doing a Falcon Punch!

No way it would be allowed for competitive though, would definitely allow some pretty busted characters.

I made an alternate Moveset for Kirby. This really wasn't made with competitive in mind, I just made most of his moves line up with actual Copy abilities (Up-B was specifically made to help with mobility though). I don't think Kirby needs this drastic of changes, but I have nothing better to do.

Jab Combo: Same

Up-Tilt: Leaf Uppercut. Taken from the Leaf copy ability from Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, Kirby does a quick uppercut using a pile of leaves, visually similar to Bayo’s Smashes. It’s very quick, but quite low in knockback.

Side Tilt: Broom Clean. Kirby uses a broom from the long forgotten Clean copy ability from KDL3. He swipes in front of him. It has low damage but has a windbox

Down Tilt: Balloon Burst. Kirby brings Triple Deluxe’s Circus to town! He makes a balloon and inflates it until it pops. Like in TD, it can change shape, though it has no impact on damage.

Dash Attack: Burning Dash. From more games than I can count, Fire’s dash attack/ Burning’s attack returns from Melee! It functions just as it does in the games, sending Kirby quite a bit further forward and dealing some Fire damage to whoever it hits.

Neutral Air: Twinkle Star. Same

Front/Back Air: Freezer Sparkle. From Ice Kirby’s midair attack in most Kirby Games, Kirby spews snow around him and spins rapidly. At higher percents it can freeze.

Up Air: Needle Stab. Coming from the rather forgettable Needle copy ability, Kirby stabs at the air above him.

Down Air: Stone. Near 1-to-1 his old Down-B from midair.

Up Smash: Geyser. Taken From Water from RTDL, it has a long hitbox right above Kirby.

Side Smash: Hammer. Similar to his old Side-Special, it does a lot of damage but has large lag.

Down Smash: Mirror Split: Mirror Kirby from Super Star and Robobot’s signature attack. Kirby has two Mirror images appear on both sides to deal damage. There’s decent range as well as invincibility frames while attacking

Neutral-B: Inhale. Changing this would be insane

Side B: Poison Ride. Using the Poison ability from Robobot, Kirby rides around on a Toxic pile of sludge like in Sonic’s Spin Dash, Yoshi's Egg Ride, and similar attacks. It’s slower than those attacks, but it leaves behind puddles of poison that deal damage.

Up B: Missile. Using the aforementioned Missile ability from Amazing Mirror, Kirby turns into a Missile in what can only be described as a supercharged variant of Villager’s Up B. Missile Kirby can dart around the stage quite easily, but he’s very difficult to control and he has no brakes.

Down B: Unstable Formula. Using the Doctor Copy ability from Robobot, Kirby starts to make a potion, randomly selected from four. It takes a few seconds to charge, but after that he can use it whenever. The fire one does the most damage, but has the smallest hitbox. The ice one has a larger hitbox and can Freeze, but deals less damage. The Electric one has 4 projectiles fall out of the bottle. Each projectile goes far, but does less damage. An opponent can get hit by multiple projectiles, if they touch all 4 it’s almost as much damage as the fire attack. The healing potion appears very infrequently, but heals 30%.

Final Smash: Hypernova. Using the Hypernova ability that debuted in Triple Deluxe, Kirby turns a rainbow color and starts inhaling rapidly, attempting to consume anything "close" to him (Close is about half of Palutena's Temple). If Kirby inhales someone, they take a lot of damage. Afterwards, Kirby spits out a giant star, which gets bigger depending on how many things he inhaled.

I don't play Kirby competitively, so I have no idea if this moveset is better or worse.

Something I find interesting is that the Inklings served as a teaser to the new Smash. They’re fighting neck-to-Beck against each other, changing from human to squid and vice versa I. What seems to be another Splatoon match. Then as they stare into the void, their eyes change to the burning Smash logo with lots of unofficial veteran.

Needless to say, Smash alongside Inklings were a huge reveal but on how they were confirmed, I don’t think that’s the best they have under their sleeves.

With that said, what characters do you believe, if confirmed, would bring more hype towards the Inklings? If you mention third-party, please mention them by name.

I would say possibly Ridley, K. Rool, Banjo-Kazooie, Master Chief, Steve, and Crash Bandicoot. If for some reason Sakurai adds a non-video game character, anyone that is iconic like Godzilla and Popeye would work too.

If we're going non-video game, Mickey mouse would be crazy, or I guess, like, goku

Sora would definitely blow people's minds, both casual fans and hardcore Smash speculators.
A large part of the hype is the surprise factor. Inklings were big reveals but you would be a fool to deny they would get in which is why we talked so little about them. Characters like Ridley and as you said, Sora, are generally not expected or predicted. There’s bound to be a lot of “WTF, HE’S FINALLY HERE!” to it.

I’ll add Lara Croft and, yes, Chun-Li to my list too because of how iconic they are.

I went and finished my Isabelle moveset if anyone's interested. :p

Isabelle Rings In!
Normal Attacks:

Jab: A bee flies in front of Isabelle, so she shuts her eyes and swings her clipboard in front of her to shoo it away, swinging it back and forth with each button press.

Dash Attack: While running, Isabelle notices a swarm of bees behind her, so she hits the deck as the swarm rushes into the opponent, missing her.

Side Tilt: Isabelle tries to catch an unseen bug in her net and swings it forward in a side-to-side motion. A two strike move.

Up Tilt: Isabelle celebrates being in Smash by pulling out a Party Popper and pointing it skyward, unleashing an explosion of confetti in a quick motion.

Down Tilt: A Ring Toss furniture piece appears before Isabelle, slightly in front of her, and she tries to toss a ring onto it. The opponent keeps getting in the way, though.

Aerial Attacks:

Neutral Air: Isabelle takes out her fishing rod and makes a circular ribbon-twirler motion around her with its line.

Forward Air: Isabelle pulls out a giant foam finger and does a scooping motion, of sorts. She just wanted to cheer, but then the foe got in the way.

Back Air: Allergy season sucks. Isabelle sneezes, shooting her backwards and making her slam into the opponent. This can also work as a last ditch recovery effort, similar to Corrin's back air, but in the opposite direction.

Up Air: Isabelle, enjoying the breeze, pulls out a pinwheel and holds it above her. Its edges are sharp and rapidly hit the foe for damage.

Down Air: Isabelle, being a klutz, drops a bag of bells from her pocket. They hurdle down toward the ground and hit the opponent with a resounding thunk.

Smash Attacks:

Forward Smash: Isabelle knocks over a stack of paperwork about 1.5 times her own height, sending it cascading forward as any foe caught in the move gets launched. This is Isabelle's best kill move...just don't tell her that.

Up Smash: Isabelle adores seashells. In this move, she'll play with the shell the mayor gave her, tossing it up in the air and catching it as it descends. While it's airborne, however, it will spin rapidly, causing major damage to those hit by it.

Down Smash: Isabelle poses in celebration as an archway appears over her, quickly falling from the sky. However, if the opponent was on either side of her when the archway was made...well, they're underneath it now. As they get blasted away, Isabelle, horrified, quickly removes the archway, turning it into a leaf.

Grab, Pummel, and Throws:

Grab and Pummel: Isabelle casts her line and snags the foe with her rod, entangling them. Each pummel has her pull on the rod in an attempt to free the line from them, though this ends up being her pummel.

Forward Throw: Isabelle turns on a giant fan that blasts foes away.

Back Throw: Isabelle tries to unhook the foe but ends up tossing them backward as she looks on in horror.

Up Throw: A geyser bursts out beneath the opponent, blasting them upward.

Down Throw: A flowerpot falls from the sky and smashes into the foe, knocking them toward the stage and sending them upward. Isabelle's gonna have to have a talk with the upstairs tenants.

Special Attacks:

Neutral Special: New Leaf - Isabelle tosses a leaf in front of her, skyward. It slowly descends toward the stage. Pressing the button again as it's either on the stage or in the air will transform it into a piece of furniture: either a small one that can be thrown, or a large one that either crushes a foe beneath it as it falls, or can be used as a stage obstacle for the opponent to have to work around. One light and one heavy object can be on the stage at once per Isabelle.

Side Special: Public Works Projects - Like Shulk's Monado Arts, these can be cycled by pressing the button. A set of four symbols appear above Isabelle as they cycle: a water droplet, a flame, an hourglass, and a bell. Selecting one brings a Gyroid onto the stage, which must be protected at all costs, as it has a health bar. If the Gyroid takes too much damage, it will disappear. After it has been guarded enough, it will transform into a permanent object on the stage. Here are the options and their effects.

— Selecting the water droplet creates a small fountain on the stage. The water effect can interrupt foes attempting to approach Isabelle from the air, due to its windbox effect.
— Selecting the flame creates a campfire. Opponents that touch this will get burned, and all explosives that touch it will instantly explode. Additionally, any projectile, either from Isabelle or from her opponent, that passes through the flames will become imbued with the fire effect, doing slightly more damage and automatically setting off explosives.
— Selecting the hourglass creates a small clockpost on the stage. This doesn't reach the foreground and doesn't impact the fight directly, but it does decrease the amount of time needed to defend a Gyroid before a Public Works Project is created.
— Selecting the bell creates a small bell on the stage that Isabelle can ring by going near it (it will automatically activate when she goes near it). This is a sound based attack that damages opponents, buying Isabelle more time.

Only two Public Works Projects can be on the stage at a time per Isabelle. These structures are semi-permanent. They will stay on the stage unless:
— The stage moves in a way that leaves the structures behind, like a touring stage, or
— Isabelle presses and holds her Side Special while next to a structure, instantly dismantling it.

Plan your "town" wisely and use each project to your advantage.

Up Special: Present Balloon - Isabelle holds onto a present balloon and flies upwards. Unlike Villager, she doesn't have free flight during this, making it a much more linear recovery.

Down Special: Beautiful Town Ordinance - Isabelle plants a sign post into the ground as a fenced off area appears on the stage around her. After five seconds (this can be reduced to three with the clock tower public works project), a small garden appears. Standing in the garden allows Isabelle to slowly heal a bit of health back, but she cannot attack while standing in the garden, making her a sitting duck. But by planning out her PWPs and furniture properly, perhaps she can preoccupy the foe long enough to heal a significant chunk of damage. Unlike her Side Special, this garden is not semi-permanent. If a foe attacks the flower bed enough, it will wither away and disappear. Striking it with a fire move will erase it almost instantly. You can only place one flower bed on the stage at a time.

Final Smash: Bell Boom Ordinance

Isabelle enacts the Wealthy Town, or Bell Boom, Ordinance. In this move, heavy bags of bells rain from the sky before bursting on impact on the stage. This causes massive damage both to the foe and to the economy.

Playstyle Notes:

Isabelle is a very defensive-oriented character. From a cosmetic standpoint, none of her moves are intended to bring harm to the opponent, but the circumstances surrounding the fight make her accidentally bring harm to them.

Where Isabelle truly shines is her set of specials, as they dictate her playstyle: she is a cute and clumsy terraformer, being able to alter the stage to her heart's content. This showcases a key aspect of the Animal Crossing series, which is town planning and interior decorating. Isabelle, being the assistant mayor, oversees a lot of the day to day town planning, and as such she is the perfect character for something like this.

Problem with what third party is considered "iconic" depends on a lot of factors that makes it too subjective.

For example, I can easily make the argument that Arle Nadja and Carbuncle from Puyo Puyo and Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza are iconic. SEGA of Japan makes a big deal out of the Puyo Puyo and Yakuza series, which is reflected in the amount of games produced and advertised alone. Hell even before SEGA obtained the rights, Puyo Puyo was an influential franchise where a lot of companies during the 90's tried to mimic it's formula. But outside of Japan for various factors, that is no where near the case, and any cases of it gaining a following now are due to recent efforts by Atlus USA (thank god).

For contrast, there's Doomguy from DOOM. The DOOM franchise is often cited as one of the most influential first person shooters ever, having a frantic pacing and hard edge making it a staple for home computers and popularized the concept of modding. But for Japan, it's influence had little to no impact. Not helping that the earliest examples of DOOM for Japanese markets were kind of crap, such as the obscure PC-98 version running terribly. For a similar example, Spyro the Dragon is a fondly remembered franchise during it's golden era on the original Playstation, but in Japan it has a more cold reception due the utter botching of Spyro 1 and 2.

Hell I would even argue some the third parties we have now are debatable depending on your perspective. Like Bayonetta's games being commercial flops, Sonic having a more lowkey popularity in Japan and having that infamous fanbase, and Pac-Man's influence being lost on younger audiences. Though a third party that is "truly" iconic on a universal scale is way too scarce and subjective to be relied on. Honestly the closest I can think of at the moment is maybe Crash Bandicoot.

Solid moveset, especially with the Special Moves covering all of the bases of mayor gameplay in New Leaf. IDK about balloons being a special for Isabelle though. I get that they are like the only notable airborne thing in AC that can be implemented for recovery, but still.

You should share the moveset in the Isabelle support thread.

Unlikely.

Octolings were just generic enemies until just this year, excluding Marina. If Smash started development back in 2016, there's no reason to give Octolings the time of day as a costume, let alone a separate character slot.
I don't think it's the craziest thing that has happened in smash, I'm just saying not to completely rule it out.

I'm not saying its completely likely, just don't rule it out entirely. Maybe the smash team knew about the upcoming DLC and planned an alternate costume, but then decided to make it their own character space.

There's been evidence of Octolings being playable all the way back in Splatoon's data, I wouldn't say it would be impossible for Sakurai and his team to know about them.

Nice move-set. Detailed and full of research.
You should totally share this in the Isabelle support thread.

I have a question, do you have a Chrom or Hector move-set? Those two are cool big boys.

I'm just reposting this interview to refresh people on how Sakurai choose Pokemon and to end all Gen 7 vs Gen 8 debates.

Given there’s over 600 Pokemon, it isn’t feasible to include everyone single one in Super Smash Bros, for obvious reasons.

So how are Pokemon selected for inclusion in the series?

“Well first of all, we talk with the Pokemon company,” explained designer Masahiro Sakurai when we put the question to him. “What’s the hot Pokemon? What Pokemon are in the movies right now? And really do a lot of research on that front.

“For example, X and Y are coming out – of course, we haven’t done any market research because they’re not out yet, but we look at the animated series or movies and anything like that and again, find out which ones are going to be central to any of conversations in Pokemon going forward.

“But it’s not just that – going back to just what we talked about, what’s unique about them? Where do they fit in with the rest of everything else? What do they have? It’s a combination of those things.”

To be honest, given that Sakurai considered and wanted Geno, icon status isn't a requirement. At best, it's an advantageous factor, so I think debates about third-party icons are frankly meaningless.

Okay, going to check that out right away.

I agree with giving Marth and English voice, considering FE is finally localized and available all over the world.

How would you feel about giving every FE character their FEH design? I love FEH by the way.

I think Isabelle will have moves similar to how Phoenix Wright did in marvel vs capcom 3 with those accidental attacks. Which would be even cooler if they both show up.

I will ask you guys a question. Do you desire to figure out Sakurai's roster for Smash Switch? If you wanna speculate for real, what is the main reason for joining the Smash community to speculate? Bragging rights, joining the hype train for fun, watching the reactions, liking Sakurai as a developer, or for other personal reasons? I wanna hear it. When it comes to discussion about potential newcomers, why do you participate in it and argue why a certain character is possible or impossible? What do you hope to gain by participating in Smash Bros. speculation?

It be a very unique smash it would also turn some heads that's for sure. if we're talking non video game character then I would want a character that's very popular but still not too overwhelming in the stakes.

Pretty likely, actually.
Yup. No new lord or main game since Fates. Kind of funny that Corrin would have been better off waiting a game than being added as DLC. They would be regarded more as locks than they are now.

Shadows of Valentia is counted as a mainline title. It being a remake doesn't matter.

That's true it's the current latest Fire Emblem to date plus there's also the fact of Fire Emblem Warriors as well with the two new characters in that game that can be used as a new rep for Fire Emblem.

While I loved Shadows of Valentia (It was the first fire emblem I could finish without getting bored) I'm not sure if I'd want a character from that game, because I love that game for the side characters, not the main ones.

Plus, FE is getting oversaturated. If we get someone from SoV I hope it's one of the Villagers, like Gray or Tobin. That way they could take moves and weapons from all the possible classes. (Swords, Bows, Lances, Magic)

I mean, cuts would help fix the oversaturation thing. Just saying. :p

On that note though Tobin's honestly one of my favorite Fire Emblem characters so I wouldn't even be mad haha. Plus we'd finally get our archer.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the SoV characters just pretty standard sword users? I can't really see them getting in if that's the case
