Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Are people seriously debating the idea of us having two Splatoon reps?

We JUST got the Inklings and it would be far too late to add more than one character.

Don't expect the Squid Sisters or the Octolings.

I say we shouldn't expect Squid Sisters, but we could have an Octoling in the same way we got dark pit and Lucina

I'm not tryna say a second Splatoon character is probable, but I think the notion that Octolings could be a last second clone is at least an idea worth exploring as they're such an obvious clone option.

I think considering how many Nintendo all stars are already in smash and how popular splatoon has been since smash 4 released. It's not out of the realm of possibility.

Unlikely.

Octolings were just generic enemies until just this year, excluding Marina. If Smash started development back in 2016, there's no reason to give Octolings the time of day as a costume, let alone a separate character slot.

If the Octolings were/are planned as a costume for Inkling, then yeah, I'll take a last minute clone. But if not (which I doubt they are seeing as the Splatoon 2 DLC has even yet to come, but who knows), then I'd rather not shoehorn the Octolings in especially if they just have them be clones. Clones planned to be clones are not really my thing.

And looks like a missed a (hundredth) Captain Toad discussion...

...yeah not the best example as he's just a costume but still shows how his heavy backpack is really more of a one-off mechanic of Captain Toad's game and how liberties are taken for him to fit into other games because of balance (thus making him jump). As would happen in Smash if he got in. Of course, there's a solid chance Captain Toad will never make it into Smash, but I sincerely doubt the reason for that would be hi "inability to jump".

I wouldn't exclude Octolings as alts/last minute clones. While the Octo expansion will be released this year, there have been several datamine that indicated the team intended to have playable Octolings, even in Splatoon 1. And they have always been very popular in the Splatoon fanbase.

The point of them being last-minute clones is that they're last minute clones. Clones aren't planned from the beginning, and can easily pull from more recent things if they're an option.

Fire Emblem wasn't a brand new series at the time.

It was an 11 year old series.
Yet Splatoon is a cultural phenomenon in Japan. Just like how Pokemon was. Let's not forget it was 3 years old when it received 2 original characters in Smash 64. An additional clone for Splatoon isn't out of the question.

Marth was also considered for Smash 64, but not added due to time constraints. So perhaps it was being treated a little differently as Sakurai felt Fire Emblem was deserving of being in the game as early as Smash 64. Inklings may have been considered for potential Smash 4 DLC, but that's not information we have.

How would you guys feel about strikes and raids similar to the weeklies in Destiny being put into Smash? The event would rotate each week.

I would imagine it being like a three level course formatted like the original Contra on the NES where players team up with a partner to take on trials that test the characters against other characters, bosses, minions, and platforming puzzles. And each week would have a series combination theme like the world of Pokémon being overrun by aliens from Mother or Pikmin exploring a Metroid planet.

I mean a weekly "quest" system would be interesting if they could work it into Smash Run or something, but I don't personally see a way to work an actual "raid" system into Smash.
To entertain the idea, though, I think they could do like a 4 player matchmaking process, the 4 players play a round of Smash Run, and then they all team up to fight a "raid boss" who cycles on a weekly basis. First completion each week could grant some significant award, like a ton of coins, and then you get a reduced amount for each subsequent completion. I would think they'd have to create a more significant use of coins for that to work, though. Still, could be fun. I'd like to do 4 player boss fights.

Don't forget, 2018 is the year of the Octolings :)

But seriously, While I think it might be too new. Alph was only a year before Smash 4. Alts probably don't take as long to make. And it's easy to think Sakurai had inside knowledge.

Debate on a second Splatoon rep? That can be summed up in one sentence.

Series is incredibly popular, but timing is iffy.

Splatoon 2 came out in late July 2017, and since we already got Inklings, I'm not sure if the development team would feel like there's anyone worthy of being a later or last-minute addition. HOWEVER, it's definitely worth mentioning how much of a monster Splatoon has become in Japan. In exactly six months after its release, Splatoon 2 has sold 2 million copies in Japan alone, becoming one of the only home console games in Japan over the past decade to make it past the 2 million mark. Seriously, this game is a phenomenon over there, and I can't stress that enough. It wouldn't shock me one bit if Sakurai saw this popularity and pushed his team to add a second Splatoon character.

If I may bring up the topic of how Villager represents AC as a whole, the following aspects are covered

*Looks customisation
*Picking up everything
*Tool use
*NES games (GC version only, though Balloon Fight recovery)
*Gyroids
*Gardening
*Lumberacking
*Plucking Weeds
*How the Turnips giveth and the Turnips taketh
*The fleeting joy of finally owning your own place, only for it to blow up in your face.

Things not covered

*The Fishing Rod
*Collecting
**Fish
**Bugs (outside of victory pose)
**Fossils (Outside fo Victory pose)
**Gyroids
**Furniture
*Tool Upgrades
*Socialising
*Earning Money
*Harvesting Fruit
*Furniture arrangement
*Running errands for lazy animals
*Having to commit to your choices lest an angry Mole verbally tear you a new one.
*City Development and Planning (new leaf only)
*Town Ordinances (new leaf only)
*Realising you wasted an entire day playing puzzle league and desert island survival when you sould have been running errands (Welcome amiibo & real life only)

So there's a lot for another Animal Crossing character to draw from. Did I miss anything?

Eh not including the bug catching and fossils is cheating a bit as it is represented in some form.

A lot of those features can't really be used for fighting. The fishing rod, collecting (can't this be Pocket, though?), harvesting fruit and making fossils/bug catching moves are the viable options there.

I could see the fishing rod being a cute tether grab for Isabelle. The animation for when she "catches" someone could be that panicked wriggling on the spot one.

Forward throw could have her recast the rod and throw the opponent with it. Up throw could be the "hey I caught a fish pose" and they get launched upwards. Back throw is the opposite of forward, drawing the rod back and flinging the opponent. Down throw could really demonstrate Isabelle freaking out by having her drop the opponent so they hit the ground and kinda bounce.

This thread has really got me on the Isabelle support train!

Octolings would work better as enemies in an Adventure Mode/revamped Smash Run. Not sure why people are pulling for them other than "we need more splatoon reps".
The Octoling could end up following the same road as Dark Pit; a last minute addition that uses the exact same moveset as another character. All the other Octarian variants would be fair game for being made into Smash Run or Adventure Mode enemies though.

As for DJ Octavio, he could be utilized as a boss.

I think Isabelle's fishing rod if she has one, shouldn't even damage people. It should be used like Rosalina's gravitational pull to catch items and bring them to Isabelle.

But then I'm one of the ''Isabelle isn't fighting to hurt you" types. She's just there doing her job and enjoying herself. She's putting together new public project works and you just get in the way, etc, etc. She's just trying to decorate the stage with items and you just get in the way, etc.

Everything she'd do would be purely by accident.

If Nintendo's smart, they won't release a demo until the game is officially released.

We're Smash fans. We're the last people Nintendo should trust when it comes to not leaking info.
Nothing got leaked from Smash 3DS having a demo.

Gematsu leaked a majority of the roster, the rest was all the ESRB leak.

I personally think that Inklings are going to be the only characters that represent the Splatoon series in Smash Bros. Switch.

Umm... Nintendo fans in general are the last people, including us Smash fans.

Remember that SM leak? There are other fans that will leak any game out as well.

I wouldn't call those people fans of anything. There was no love for Pokémon in what happened with Sun and Moon. They didn't just spoil stuff for the game, but put it out there for people to pirate and play themselves without buying it. Bunch of jerks, and if I was to be harsh, scum.

Here is the thing, a lot of these are literally what you do in Animal Crossing and is a core part of that genera. Trying to fit these designs into a cohesive moveset just doesn't seem possible.

Just bought a original Indigo/Clear GameCube controller in good condition in a good condition box, and I was reminded of my two GameCube Smash Controllers. Do we think the'll make some new one for the Switch game? I really want some new ones since I love collecting controllers, haha.

I believe the inklings will be the only newcomer in smash 5. Maybe BOTW Link also might be a newcomer but i dont know... I guess he will most likely end up as a skin for old Link.

That seems kinda unlikely. There is no way they would be developing this game for over 2 years and only have 1 new character to show for it.

Sakurai’s been working on this game since at least mid-2016. He tweeted about knowing what his next project is in early 2016. I definitley think a dev cycle of over 2 years would have more characters in the game.

I guess you can be right about that, but maybe, and this might be a longshot, they have been using all that time for cuts?

Added one aspect I forgot, the Tool Upgrades.

I'm thinking you could get a moveset based off getting bells and shaking down for Tom Nook or one based around tool improvement, making public works and cute clumsy secretary stuff for Isabelle.
