Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I doubt they'd announce Animal Crossing Switch over the weekend and with the wording?

It gives me nightmare fuel for an Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival port and no thank you.
Same, actually lol. My personal feeling is that, at this point, they won't reveal something completely new between now and E3. Obviously I could be totally wrong, I mean none of us expected them to reveal Smash. But they're clearly foreshadowing something, though there's no reason the believe it's something major like a Smash announcement.

EDIT: I mean it could be something as meaningless as a new festival in AC:NL or Pocket Camp. There is not a single indication that it actually means anything at all, really. They just had such a odd choice of words, it makes you wonder what exactly they're trying to say here.

I feel as if there's a direct later this month or next month.

That invitational is weird. You're going to send a bunch of people blindly into a game they've never seen gameplay footage of and even if you info dump right before the Invitational that's still just throwing them into it.

No. There has to be something Nintendo between now and E3 to get at least SOME Smash Switch info out.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

*deep breath*

More likely it's something going on in the mobile game.
Not that it matters, I haven't touched it since January.

I agree. At least a trailer showing gameplay with the inklings like what happened with villager.

(And squid sisters revealed as newcomers too :troll:)

My thoughts exactly. A lot of people have made the suggestion that they'll show off the game just days before, but that wouldn't really drum up hype for the event, nor would waiting til the event itself to show it. I think to properly generate hype, they should be looking to show off at least a little something in between the reveal and E3.

Nah, they had time to prepare last time; however, with the potential for leaks, it would be in their best interest to reveal the base game first. Especially because that is what will make people, oh, I do not know, want to watch it? It would make no sense to wait until the very last moment. As much as people are overly pessimistic, that is just not going to happen. There is definitely going to be something between now and e3 lol.

That's me with all Nintendo mobile games really.

''Ah. This is cute.'

Two days later and I'm just like ''Did I download a new game on my phone? Nah."

That is me with all mobile games, really. I hate what it has done to the industry and I was scared about Nintendo getting into it. However, it seems fine. If anything, Nintendo has some of the better offerings. I am just glad that we are not getting a Smash for Switch/Mobile gimmick this time around.

Hmm... so theoretically speaking, their popularity was there at the time of dev's start...

Don't think they'll Smash debut a series with 3 characters, none have done that before, but the possibility is there.

And that’s more likely than stuff like shovel knight and the dark souls dude being amiibos and therefore being in smash.

So earlier today, Nintendo of America posted this image (https://www.instagram.com/p/BhhHMW1B16e/?hl=en&taken-by=nintendo) saying something about Isabelle looking forward to an unnamed event this weekend. I initially expected the Cherry Blossom Festival, especially based on the picture, but from the research I've been doing, the Cherry Blossom Festival should have already happened. Anyone think Nintendo may be hinting at revealing something (doesn't have to be Smash related) this weekend?
Could go either way, but we'll find out soon enough.

Let's just agree that Isabelle and the Squid Squirter Sisters won't be playable. Done discussion.
I think Isabelle will be playable though. In fact I think she's the single most likely non-Inkling newcomer.

Clearly the final Splatfest for Splatoon was made to decide which Squid Sister would get into Smash, so Marie is all but confirmed. :awesome:

IMO Isabelle is one of the most likely new characters and the Squid Sisters will most likely be an assist trophy or a fixture on a Splatoon stage.

The perfect one would be the Splatoon stage being platforms floating above Inkoplis square and when it transitions, Callie and Marie do their show to announce it.

But then again Pearl and Marina could easily do that too.

Can someone tell me why Isabelle is even likely? Like she just doesn't seem necessary when Villager is another one of those characters that covers the whole franchise on his own.

In function yes but there's the dev timeline to consider.

On that topic, when was the final Splatfest? They used it to tell Splatoon 2's story so it may be indicative of development.

I'd say dixie first, then isabelle tbh

edit: wolf is pretty far up there too, as is bandana dee

She's just ridiculously popular and has become a major face to the series, she's got hella merchandise, was in mario kart alongside villager, there's just a high probability nintendo would want her in. there's not a whole lot of moveset potential there but there's so much stuff to draw from in animal crossing that I'm sure they could make something up

I was thinking that too, and the timing would line up to when the game was planned. Summer of 2016.
I’d be happy with just Marie too.

Because honestly Villager doesn't cover the whole franchise. That's the whole issue. Animal Crossing is massive and there's still a lot of potential for other characters.

Add in the fact that Isabelle is incredibly popular and is THE face of the franchise, and she would fit right in.

Side topic: About Mach Rider. I'm sure it's just internet misinformation but... wasn't Mach Rider a she in at least one version?
Never directly confirmed, but Mach Rider Vs. does sort of give the implication that Mach Rider is a woman.

I'm still not entirely sure why he was cut. Would it really be such a strain on the system when Nintendog also does the whole "cover the screen" thing? Unless the fact that it had lots of text boxes was the deciding factor.

Can't think of why he'd be dropped otherwise.

The final splatfest was around the same time as the amiibos. At by that point is was only a few months until splatoon 2 was shown on the switch reveal trailer, meaning they were obviously busy making it.

Found it.

The question raised is "Is she Mach Rider or something to look at for doing well?" It was the 80's so either could be possible.

  • Link's design is updated. Hookshot is replaced with the Rune Magnet, Arrow is replaced with Ancient Arrow, Gale Boomerang is replaced with Boomerang, Bomb is replaced with Rune Bomb, and stage entrance is now Warp Travel.
  • Zelda's design is updated. Down Special allows her to channel her energy.
  • Sheik's design is updated.
  • Ganondorf's design is updated with Ancient Armor and many new abilities.
  • Kirby has some new specials and Final Smash is now Mike Kirby.
  • Fox & Falco's designs are updated. Final Smash is Arwing Walker.
  • Olimar no longer uses White Pikmin and Purple Pikmin, but instead Winged Pikmin and Rock Pikmin. His Up Special is now the jet pack from "Hey! Pikmin". The ship is from "Hey! Pikmin" as well. Alph now has voice clips.
  • Villager's design is updated.

Paper Mario: Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon all have eight characters because in all past Smash games since Melee, they have had an equal share of characters on the select screen, with the exception of Mario characters sometimes having more. I chose Paper Mario as most likely because of his popularity and his new unique ability which is that he can take the form of a stack of papers and multiply himself. I believe this gives him the unique personality he didn't have before to qualify his inclusion.

Originally I had him and Captain Toad, but I think it would be a bit too much given that Mario had two newcomers last time.

Cranky Kong: Cranky Kong is kind of like the Palutena of the Donkey Kong series. With the exception of the Donkey Kong Land games on Gameboy, there exists no Donkey Kong Country game where Cranky Kong does not share a plentiful amount of screen time where he makes himself known. If there's a third most important/recurring Kong, it's Cranky. I also believe he is the most unique one with his scientific knowledge, potions, and cane.

Pauline: Pauline is one of the original cast members of Donkey Kong and she's become very popular in recent years, especially with Super Mario Odyssey. She's probably not all that likely because Super Mario Odyssey was late 2017, but I kept her because she has her other merits. Her unique ability is her parasol and her love of music.

Toon Zelda & Tetra: I believe these two are the most popular Zelda characters and they are definitely the most important given their recurrence in major roles in Zelda games. Especially recent ones like Wind Waker HD and Hyrule Warriors. I believe Toon Zelda is definitely one of the most creative newcomers on this roster because of her ability to shed her phantom armor and become her spirit form. I don't consider it redundant that they are of the Zelda bloodline. They are both completely different characters and all of the most important characters of the Zelda series are Link, Zelda, and Ganon.

Mimikyu: Mimikyu is clearly the most popular and promoted Pokemon of Sun & Moon. His role in the anime is extremely significant as he is a part of Team Rocket since the series began and he continues to appear. He was also one of the more significant Totem Pokemon in the game.

Celica: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is the most recent Fire Emblem game. Because of this remake, Celica is now one of the few characters to have multiple games where she is a main protagonist along with Marth & Ike. I chose her over Alm because she is more unique as a preistess and she appeared in Fire Emblem Warriors. And the fact that Fire Emblem Gaiden is such an old game, makes her popular with both new and old fans of the series.

Excitebike: The Excite series is one of Nintendo's most successful series. It is also the ninth best selling Famicom game. Excitebike's unique ability is that his specials do MASSIVE damage, but as a result of using them, his bike overheats. This is demonstrated by the meter next to his character icon during battle.

Pichu: With the addition of Dr. Mario, a lot of people have been requesting Pichu come back. The reason I have him and not Wolf, is because he is quick to make. Though we may see as many as 80 characters, I would not be surprised if Wolf came back.

Impa: Impa is another popular request. I originally had her as a costume of Sheik, but instead she appears as a taller and more muscular clone of Sheik as they are both Sheikah and share a similar body structure. As a result of being buffer, she's not as agile. She uses Giant's Knife as her Final Smash, which functions identical to Cloud's Final Smash.

I didn't have a picture of it, but Impa appears as a younger version of herself from Breath of The Wild.

Sheriff: Sheriff appears as a legacy character as he is the oldest Nintendo character of all. I'm aware his game was a flop, but I think with a shortage of easy pickings, he is going to appear as a new criteria of newcomer. In Melee, there was a desire to have a true Famicom representative. I believe this time there will be a true arcade representative, someone who has only appeared in an arcade game and didn't have a sequel, similar to how Ice Climbers only appeared in a Famicom game and did not have a sequel. I believe this is the installment where the timing is perfect for Sheriff's inclusion.

Sheriff's unique ability is that he has eight directional attacks instead of four. All of his tilt attacks fire his pistol in a different direction. His neutral special is a charge shot. Again, he can use this to fire in one of eight directions, but the shot is more powerful and it suspends him in midair for a breif moment. He uses a whip in his smash attacks, similar to Kirby's cowboy transformation. His Up Special is Condor, his side special is Bandido, and his Down Special is Barrier (He hides and shoots behind the wooden post that has numbers on them).

I have a concept for the stage as well. It takes place inside the Sheriff Arcade Cabinet and the border around the screen can be seen. It's basically like the popular "Box" Custom Stage. Opponents cannot be KO'd until the dots around the screen are broken open.

Bomberman: Bomberman is probably the most requested third party character. The amount of Bomberman games is enormous and a lot of them are Nintendo exclusives. His alternate pallet swaps are the Bomberman Brothers from Super Bomberman R.

Simon: After Street Fighter and Final Fantasy getting characters, I believe Castlevania is the next big third party IP to have in Super Smash Bros. This series too has a history with Nintendo on the Famicom & Super Famicom.

I don't have any characters from Arms, Fire Emblem 16, or Pokemon 8 because of how late their debuts are compared to when this game probably started development.

Paper Mario: Paper Mario appears as a stack of Paper Marios. He can use this to his advantage to multiply himself and take more hits. But, the shorter the stack gets, the easier he becomes to launch. Now Jigglypuff doesn't need to feel so bad.

King K. Rool: The gun is a big part of King K. Rool's move set here. He has two sets of costumes. King K. Rool and Kaptain K. Rool. The name changes accordingly as well.

Dixie Kong: Dixie Kong appears as an unlockable character. Similar to Diddy Kong, she has a Gumball Popgun, Monkey Flip, and Banana Peel. Her Up special is completely unique. Well, from Diddy Kong at least. Her hair twirl functions similarly to Donkey Kong's Spinning Kong. She uses her guitar in her Final Smash.

Toon Zelda: Toon Zelda isn't two characters like Zelda/Sheik, but she does have two forms. Her Phantom form is a wrecking machine, weilding the Torch Phantom, Warp Phantom, and Wrecker Phantom abilities. She may seem overpowered at first, but once you break her armor, she is but a ghost of a little girl. She can't use special attacks or launch very well, but she can definitely rack up lots of damage until she is able to summon another Phantom to possess. Her Final Smash is the Light Bow. She can use this in either form, so don't worry.

Alph: Alph gets updated to a seperate character in this roster. He does not have White or Purple Pikmin. He does however have Rock Pikmin which can bury opponents, and Winged Pikmin which make your throw more powerful, but their attack isn't so good. Olimar and Alph both use the jet pack from "Hey! Pikmin" as their recovery. And they both have their own costume characters. Louie & Brittany.

It should also be noted that Alph is faster and has a smaller hitbox. His End of Day has a bigger range due to the S.S. Drake's larger width.

Arle Nadja: Arle & Carbuncle are from Puyo Puyo. But, Tetris and Puzzle League (known in America as Panel De Pon) are included in their arsenal as well, making the ultimate Puzzle Fighter.

My only regret is that Pichu's not on this roster. I really hope he does come back.
I like the idea of Toon Zelda you have but I can't see her and Tetra be in the same game. Also the Puyo Puyo girl is a third-party character a lot of people underestimate being in the game, same with Monster Hunter, so I appreciate you added her.

The issue I have with Isabelle is that she's not someone I could see getting in a fight.

Yes, characters like Villager and Wii Fit Trainer aren't fighters in their games, but there is nothing to suggest that they wouldn't fight if they wanted/had to. Isabelle is someone who hates confrontation, and just seems too kindhearted to be physically violent under any circumstance, and I feel doing so would go against her character.

I think there is a reason as to why she is the only assist trophy to not cause any sort of negative affect to the enemy (along with Nintendogs technically). And we all know how Sakurai doesn't like inaccurately portraying characters. Prominence isn't the end all be all when deciding characters.

Pretty solid roster. I disagree with some of the choices being likely to happen, but it's all speculation anyway. I like the dedication put into this.

Side note: Unless I'm blind, I don't see Paper Mario under the character history section.

70 Character Roster (73 When counting Miis). As Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch will likely reuse source material and assets that were already created for the Wii U installment, all the characters return here.

DLC Characters: Bomberman, Simon Belmont, Snake, Arle Nadja.

There aren't any third parties, because I don't consider any to be that much more likely than the other so choosing one or two is a hard excercise.

My original DK choice was Cranky Kong who I think would be more likely, but because of the existence of the 2016 ballot and his Japan Popularity, I went with King K. Rool. He probably wouldn't be on one of my rosters otherwise. Dixie is here because of the successful Tropical Freeze.

Arms, Pokemon 8, and Fire Emblem 16 are absent from this roster as the real roster was likely conceived around 2016. So this roster focuses on that era, with the exception of Rex & Pyra as plans for Xenoblade 2 started as early as 2014. Where as Fire Emblem and Pokemon were not announced until 2017. And these games are coming as late as 2018 & possibly 2019. Not saying they aren't gonna happen, but as the characters don't even exist to have an icon for them, I left them out.

Toon Zelda and Tetra may be overkill but a solid roster nonetheless.

Usually the proposed concept is that she is a clutz and most of her attacks are her clumsily attacking people by accident. Kind of like Villager's dash attack.

I don't see "She's not someone I could see getting in a fight" to be an argument.

Pretty solid roster. I disagree with some of the choices being likely to happen, but it's all speculation anyway. I like the dedication put into this.

Side note: Unless I'm blind, I don't see Paper Mario under the character history section.
Thank you. And if fixed that now.
