Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

70 Character Roster (73 When counting Miis). As Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch will likely reuse source material and assets that were already created for the Wii U installment, all the characters return here.

DLC Characters: Bomberman, Simon Belmont, Snake, Arle Nadja.

There aren't any third parties, because I don't consider any to be that much more likely than the other so choosing one or two is a hard excercise.

My original DK choice was Cranky Kong who I think would be more likely, but because of the existence of the 2016 ballot and his Japan Popularity, I went with King K. Rool. He probably wouldn't be on one of my rosters otherwise. Dixie is here because of the successful Tropical Freeze.

Arms, Pokemon 8, and Fire Emblem 16 are absent from this roster as the real roster was likely conceived around 2016. So this roster focuses on that era, with the exception of Rex & Pyra as plans for Xenoblade 2 started as early as 2014. Where as Fire Emblem and Pokemon were not announced until 2017. And these games are coming as late as 2018 & possibly 2019. Not saying they aren't gonna happen, but as the characters don't even exist to have an icon for them, I left them out.

Paper Mario: Paper Mario appears as a stack of Paper Marios. He can use this to his advantage to multiply himself and take more hits. But, the shorter the stack gets, the easier he becomes to launch. Now Jigglypuff doesn't need to feel so bad.

King K. Rool: The gun is a big part of King K. Rool's move set here. He has two sets of costumes. King K. Rool and Kaptain K. Rool. The name changes accordingly as well.

Dixie Kong: Dixie Kong appears as an unlockable character. Similar to Diddy Kong, she has a Gumball Popgun, Monkey Flip, and Banana Peel. Her Up special is completely unique. Well, from Diddy Kong at least. Her hair twirl functions similarly to Donkey Kong's Spinning Kong. She uses her guitar in her Final Smash.

Toon Zelda: Toon Zelda isn't two characters like Zelda/Sheik, but she does have two forms. Her Phantom form is a wrecking machine, weilding the Torch Phantom, Warp Phantom, and Wrecker Phantom abilities. She may seem overpowered at first, but once you break her armor, she is but a ghost of a little girl. She can't use special attacks or launch very well, but she can definitely rack up lots of damage until she is able to summon another Phantom to possess. Her Final Smash is the Light Bow. She can use this in either form, so don't worry.

Alph: Alph gets updated to a seperate character in this roster. He does not have White or Purple Pikmin. He does however have Rock Pikmin which can bury opponents, and Winged Pikmin which make your throw more powerful, but their attack isn't so good. Olimar and Alph both use the jet pack from "Hey! Pikmin" as their recovery. And they both have their own costume characters. Louie & Brittany.

It should also be noted that Alph is faster and has a smaller hitbox. His End of Day has a bigger range due to the S.S. Drake's larger width.

Arle Nadja: Arle & Carbuncle are from Puyo Puyo. But, Tetris and Puzzle League (known in America as Panel De Pon) are included in their arsenal as well, making the ultimate Puzzle Fighter.

My only regret is that Pichu's not on this roster. I really hope he does come back.
I don't see us getting another 2 mario reps after just getting 2 in smash 4, and since captain toad's whole gimmick is that he can't jump I don't see him working in smash.
I also don't see us getting 2 DK reps, especially K Rool cause he's not relevant rn.
I don't see Toon Zelda or Tetra happening because of relevance.
Mimikyu over decidueye is an odd choice imo.
Rex & Pyra aren't likely to me because of timing, I think Elma is a more likely choice if we were to get another Xenoblade rep. I could see them being DLC fighters tho.
Still having only 3 kirby characters is weird.

it's a nice looking roster tho I'll give you that.

For a 70 character roster I don't think this is that bad. Here's some notable opinions of mine

+I like the Donkey Kong Country characters.
+I think that a Rhythm Heaven character is underrated, it's certainly possible.
+Not having Decidueye for pokemon, I think he's overrated in terms of chance. (Although not sure about Mimikyu tbh)
+No new FE characters is something not a lot of people speculate about, but it's pretty likely.
+Alph being seperated is cool

-I think the Zelda choices are odd. I think Tetra is likelier than Spirit Tracks Toon Zelda, but idk anything could happen.
-Not sure if two new mario characters would be included in a 70 character roster. One, definitely.
-I really think that a Kirby character of some kind will be included. It doesn't have to be Bandana Waddle Dee, but I think a Kirby character of some kind is almost guaranteed.

70 Character Roster (73 When counting Miis). As Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch will likely reuse source material and assets that were already created for the Wii U installment, all the characters return here.
View attachment 141422

You've got a good roster here, with some nice choices, but I really just wanna comment on how the picture you posted with it is really aesthetically-pleasing.

I don't see us getting another 2 mario reps after just getting 2 in smash 4, and since captain toad's whole gimmick is that he can't jump I don't see him working in smash.

Mimikyu over decidueye is an odd choice imo.
I don't see why. Mimikyu is infinitely more popular, promoted, and prominent. And I don't see why Captain Toad can't use other means of recovery aside from jumping. Or why he can't just jump at least once.

Idk about popularity but I feel like Mimikyu wouldn't work as well in smash as decidueye and gamefreak clearly wants to promote him since he's the only pokemon added to pokken dx. Captain toad's whole gimmick, the point of his games, is that he can't jump, there's no way to properly represent him and his game in smash unless they make him not jump which obviously wouldn't work in smash.

Near 1K pages in, I'm not even sure what there is to discuss anymore that hasn't already just in this thread alone.

We've gone over just about every single potential character, konami, the rating, the tone, interviews, cuts, non-cuts, clones, third parties, DLC, leaks, port vs. not port, custom moves, Miis, SSE, redesigns, skins, assist trophies, items, the UI, the online, etc;

I don't think anything could possibly come up that wouldn't be going in circles at this point, honestly. Hoping we get some real info soon.

Let's fuse discussion topics. Fire Emblem characters can't jump because we all know from Awakening's models that they don't have feet, and you need feet to jump. Checkmate Sakurai! /s
But in Fire Emblam Feets they get feet, so does that ,mean they're able to jump??

Idk about popularity but I feel like Mimikyu wouldn't work as well in smash as decidueye
Why?
and gamefreak clearly wants to promote him since he's the only pokemon added to pokken dx.
I don't understand that logic. Mimkyu is heavily promoted in the anime and in Japan, He's the most popular and promoted Gen 7 Pokemon, and Zeraora is going to be featured prominently in Pokemon The 21st Movie, but Decidueye is the apple of GameFreak's eye because he was in Pokken Tournament DX?

Captain toad's whole gimmick, the point of his games, is that he can't jump, there's no way to properly represent him and his game in smash unless they make him not jump which obviously wouldn't work in smash.
That's just not true.

Usually the proposed concept is that she is a clutz and most of her attacks are her clumsily attacking people by accident. Kind of like Villager's dash attack.

I don't see "She's not someone I could see getting in a fight" to be an argument.
The argument I was trying to make is that Sakurai might feel this way. Obviously my feelings don't mean ****, but Sakurai's do.

Of course non of us really know how Sakurai feels about it, so we can only speculate.

Near 1K pages in, I'm not even sure what there is to discuss anymore that hasn't already just in this thread alone.

We've gone over just about every single potential character, konami, the rating, the tone, interviews, cuts, non-cuts, clones, third parties, DLC, leaks, port vs. not port, custom moves, Miis, SSE, redesigns, skins, assist trophies, items, the UI, the online, etc;

I don't think anything could possibly come up that wouldn't be going in circles at this point, honestly. Hoping we get some real info soon.
Has anybody brought up changing up character voices? I really want Bowser to sound like Bowser.

Mother 3 Anniversary is coming up. It'd be pretty ironic if Lucas was among the first characters revealed where he was the last Brawl Vet in SSB4.

I definitely haven't seen anyone bring up voices (although I haven't read all 865 of these pages so it may or may not have...)

I would definitely like to have the Star Fox Zero voices take over the Star Fox 64 ones. I just don't think they're very good.

It'd be nice to have the ability to change every character's voice from Japanese to English individually, same as how Marvel vs. Capcom lets you do it.

I've never really been a fan of not understanding what Marth, Roy and Cloud are actually saying.

I'd like Samus to actually have a voice normally and not sound like a robot (her Prime VA would be fantastic), and Bowser to of course actually sound like Bowser and not a... whatever it is he's supposed to sound like.

70 Character Roster (73 When cou
nting Miis). As Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch will likely reuse source material and assets that were already created for the Wii U installment, all the characters return here.
View attachment 141422

Unlockable Characters (12)
  • Paper Mario
  • Rhythm Heaven
  • Dixie Kong
  • Wolf O'Donnell
  • Mr. Game & Watch
  • Duck Hunt
  • R.O.B.
  • Takamaru
  • Dr. Mario
  • Dark Pit
  • Lucina
  • Alph
All fairly reasonable choices, I don't have anything to say about them. Most of the newcomers are likely and I can see the returning characters coming back as well as Alph being upgraded.
Arle Nadja: Arle & Carbuncle are from Puyo Puyo. But, Tetris and Puzzle League (known in America as Panel De Pon) are included in their arsenal as well, making the ultimate Puzzle Fighter.
Now this right here, in my opinion, will very likely not happen. Pretend we're in the past, and Sakurai is deciding what Cloud will play like; would he want Isaac's Psyenergy to be part of his moveset? I believe he wouldn't see that as a very faithful interpretation of his character or his game. The Smash developers have demonstrated that they prioritize characters being faithfully translated into Smash, and as such, I think they would make Arle's abilities solely based on Puyo Puyo.

What if they aren't translating Mother 3 into English because they are working on a Mother HD trilogy for switch

I don't think the anime has much impact, especially since when the roster was decided, the anime wasn't out which I believe is where it started to garner the bulk of it's popularity. Tbh I haven't been keeping up with pokemon so idk about Zeraora.

That's just not true.
That's definitely true, you just can't add a character that's game mechanic is it's inability to jump into smash.

I'd be so happy with a Mother HD Trilogy, you have no idea.

Ever since I saw this video I've wanted it real bad, lol. I don't think it'd ever happen though, they don't have any real reason to go out of their way to make remakes of an already proven unprofitable series... it took them so long just to bring over an already translated version of Mother 1 to the west.

Arle Nadja & Carbuncle (Debut: 1991)
  • Puyo Puyo (Japan Only)
  • Puyo Puyo Chronicles (3DS)
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris (NS)

Arle Nadja: Arle & Carbuncle are from Puyo Puyo. But, Tetris and Puzzle League (known in America as Panel De Pon) are included in their arsenal as well, making the ultimate Puzzle Fighter.
I believe you are under the misconception that Arle is from the Puyo Puyo series, because, that's not actually true.

Puyo Puyo is a spin-off of the Madou Monogatari series, Arle is originally and primarily an RPG character and debuted in 1998... 3 years before you put them as.

They have no reason to include other puzzle games because they already function entirely as a magic based character, and while they'd likely have references to Puyo Puyo, even in those games she uses magic attacks with her animations.

I also have to say it's a little strange 3/4 of the DLC characters are from Konami. Otherwise good roster.

If they include a Kirby newcomer that is not Bandana Dee I will go insane.

Even when Magolor is also one of my most wanted characters lol.

I personally think that the whole "Mother series is unprofitable" notion shouldn't even be relevant anymore. So many people know about Ness from smash, and if they heard "oh, Ness and Lucas' games are getting HD remakes" I'm sure a ton more of the general population would be interested.

He doesn't necessarily need to jump, they could just make him really good on the ground or a very heavy character with a good recovery.

It's also possible to just give Captain Toad one jump. It'd play into the fact that he can't really jump, and does it worse than anyone else in the game, but still technically giving him an air game and way to get over things.

I definitely agree, but convincing me is a lot easier than convincing Nintendo that. What is essentially building 3 entire games from the ground up with no proven profit would be a huge risk.

Even series like F-Zero, Custom Robo, Nintendo Wars, etc; we've yet to see return of despite them all being something that could be very easily made profitable and appeal to a bigger audience.

A random smash related idea: if Phoenix Wright is revealed as a newcomer, his trailer would definitely show game and watch using his judge attack on him

But in his games he physically can't lift himself off of the ground, him not jumping is a massive game mechanic, I just can't see it working

I'm sure this has been done before but, out of all the things you can see happening in Smash Switch (regardless of whether or not you think they're likely), what are the three you fear the most? What don't you want to happen?
For me it's
1. Cutting Jigglypuff
2. Not adding any Kirby newcomers
3. Not buffing Jigglypuff / Nerfing Jigglypuff
I'd be so happy with a Mother HD Trilogy, you have no idea.

I'm not sure it's really that unprofitable, didn't Earthbound "sell out" on Club Nintendo at one point? I think that ought to show there's interest in the franchise if it's true.
(Also, how do you even run out of copies of a digital game lol)

I don't know it, I'm genuinely confused on how yall expect captain toad to work?
Smash games rarely follow the canon of the games if it jeopardizes how a character plays.

For example, Ness and Lucas both have mostly PK abilities that they don't canonically learn, other than Magnet and Flash. Bayonetta should lose all her clothes when using a smash attack, but she doesn't.

Speaking of jumping, all the mario characters can double jump, despite never doing so in their games.

Also, doesn't Capitan Toad actually have a jump? It just doesn't go far at all. That can directly translate to smash as Capitan Toad having really bad jumps but maybe a good Up B.

Either way, if smash mechanics contradict character canon, you can bet that smash mechanics will be prioritized 80% of the time

But sakurai likes to represent a character and their games as closely as possible. Bayonetta's clothes may come off and mario characters can't double jump in their games but having them do that in smash doesn't completely contradict their entire character and the gameplay of their home series.

Also he can't jump, I'm pretty sure pressing the jump button will have him try to jump but it won't work.

Hypothetically, is there anything actually stopping them from adding Captain Toad and just having him unable to jump and unable to recover if knocked offstage? Not that that's the most reasonable way to go about it, but it's possible, right?

Ideas from Captain Toad thread

CT's initial jump can be Toadette lifting him up like you can do in the Multiplayer Super Mario games, a spring appearing beneath his feet or just being stupid low. Like, short hop low.

I want Bowser to sound like Bowser, but I'm afraid it'd also mean Donkey Kong sounds like Donkey Kong, and modern Donkey Kong is a little too Scooby dooby doo for my tastes.

What would your reaction be if Rowlet is revealed to be a playable character?

What about his DK 64 voice?
