Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Custom Robo sounds like a more Smash-applicable game imo. Ray 01 is definitely the robot I'd want in Smash.
While I would agree that Custom Robo is my preference, Chibi Robo has relevance on its side, even though the game is possibly dead due to the poor performance of Zip Lash. Nintendo acknowledged his existence as recent as January 2018, whereas I haven't heard a peep out of Nintendo in regards to Custom Robo since Custom Robo Arena on the DS.

I do think Custom Robo should get another chance on the Switch, especially since Nintendo has stepped up their advertising game since that last Custom Robo entry happened. I've played both of the Custom Robo games released in the US to 100% completion, and the games are smooth and a hell of a lot of fun. If marketed properly, I think the game could truly ascend to some level of relevance. Nintendo just has to give it a proper chance.

Othar than both having similar names, and both being robots, there are simply not much more to it, in comparison that is. They are way too different from each other.

Would anybody else be down to see some old stages "remastered"? Rather than just bringing them back like in previous installments, I'd like to see Smash go the Mario Kart 8 route and give some older stages a fresh coat of paint. (This would probably only really be necessary for stages from 64 and Melee.)

What I think they should do is bring back a few key locations that are still relevent to current Switch games. Keep the layouts the same, but change the visuals to resemble their newer appearances.

For example, Princess Peach's Castle from Melee could return in celebration of its appearance in Odyssey! Instead of Melee's weirdly drab and washed-out colours, it would be updated to be bright and vibrant. The background can be changed to look like the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom from Odyssey. Maybe a whole bunch of hat airships can fly around in the background, and of course, the moon would be front and centre in the sky.

Or how about Hyrule Castle?

It could have a more run-down and broken appearance like in BotW. Wisps of the black and purple "blight" would float through the air, and maybe Calamity Ganon could ominously swirl around in the background. In fact, rather than being a static texture, the backdrop could be a fully modeled vista of BotW's Hyrule Field. Maybe to set it apart visually from the inevitable new BotW stage, Hyrule Castle could take place at sundown or at night.

(Also I'm just going to casually remind everyone about the stage survey, keep your great ideas coming!)

You think there is a way to fit all of the Pikmin captains into Olimar's base model? I would really love to see them all playable ala Koopalings.

Ten out of eighteen pokemon types are represented in Smash 4:

Electric
- Pikachu
Fire - Charizard
Flying - Charizard
Fairy - Jigglypuff
Normal - Jigglypuff
Water - Greninja
Dark - Greninja
Psychic - Mewtwo
Fighting - Lucario
Steel - Lucario

Your task is to add the other 8 types with no more than 5 pokemon. Who do you pick?
Grass/Ghost - Deicudeye
Ghost/Poison - Gengar
Ground/Dragon - Flygon
Ice/Rock - Auorus
Bug/Flying - Scyther

This was WAYYYY harder than I was expecting, and this has to be with Gengar taking a double slot here lol

So heres some questions. Would you rather have:

Toad or Waluigi
Geno or Paper Mario
Dixie or K Rool
Ridley or Sylux
Impa or Tingle
Decidueye or Inciniroar
Bandana Dee or Marx

Toad
Geno

Impa
Decidueye
Bandana Dee
Isabelle
Springman
Medusa
Wolf
Samurai Goroh
CRASH ****ING BANDICOOT
Rayman

Well some of the Koopalings like Iggy had to have their proportions altered so they could actually be Bowser Jr. alts without needing to change the hitboxes, so this kind of thing wouldn't be new.

Would I want it though? No. If anything, I'd prefer if Alph was upgraded to a clone.

Since they were talked about earlier, I think Chibi-Robo and Ray from Custom Robo would both make for good additions. Unfortunately, they both seem to be pretty unlikely candidates as far as newcomers go.

So heres some questions. Would you rather have:

Toad or Waluigi
Waluigi, definitely. He's one of my most wanted characters.

Geno or Paper Mario
Paper Mario. Don't really care about him or the Paper Mario series, but I don't want Geno.

Dixie or K. Rool
Would rather have Cranky or Funky over either, but since it's just between those two I will say K. Rool.

Ridley or Sylux
Ridley. Especially if Meta Ridley or Proteus Ridley.

Impa or Tingle
Tingle. I've lost any sort of hope for him, but I'll be damned if I say I wouldn't want to see him playable.

Decidueye or Incineroar
What do you think? :p

Bandana Dee or Marx
Marx. Seeing him in action in Star Allies made me realize I didn't know how much I wanted him in Smash.

Isabelle or Tom Nook
Mr. Resetti.
....but seeing as he's not an option, I'll go with Nook.
Nothing against Isabelle personally, but I just can't see her as a good idea.

Spring Man or someone else from ARMS
Either Min Min or Twintelle. Spring Man bores me.

Hades or Medusa
Hades. He seems like he'd be fun of an addition.

Wolf or Krystal
Wolf, if for no other reason but because he was in Brawl and I would like him back.

Black Shadow or Samurai Goroh
Perfectly fine with either at this point, but Black Shadow has the edge because I want to recreate the climactic scene in Falcon Densetsu.

Crash or Spyro
Crash. Don't really have any attachment to either of them, but I would like to have Mario v. Sonic v. Crash fights.

Rayman or Rabbids
Rabbids.
....yeah, this is controversial, but I don't have any sort of resentment towards them like many do. Hell, even when they showed up in TMNT: Smash-Up, while annoyed that we got an excessive number of them, I wasn't filled with rage.

Bomberman or Simon Belmont
Snake's return not an option? Because I'd rather he come back than either showing up instead.
But I suppose Bomberman would be more acceptable to me in comparison.

While Im fine with it in some cases I wouldn't want any N64 stages to be touched.

I love that old blocky aesthetic more than anything else. Bias. . .but oh well

Maybe. The proportions arent't suuuuper different, but Charlie might be a bit too far. And unlike Koopalngs, the captains wouldn't have a vehicle to help smooth out the hitboxes

Yea that's my only issue. Maybe you just leave it at the four similar proportionate captains (Olimar, Alph, Louie, and Brittany) and give them four colors each to equal Little Mac's 16 alts. Sacho and Charlie are the only real outliers body wise.

I feel like Paper Mario had way more support during speculation for the last few games. Did the modern Paper Mario games kill a lot of the support he had?

If they were to remaster some stages, maybe their old appearances could be accessible similar to a character palette swap? Would be a good way to allow for a fresh take on a stage while still having its nostalgic look as an option.

He's still one of my most wanted characters, if not my #1 pick. I just hope his moveset wouldn't lean to heavily towards the modern games.

Although, Paper Mario support has always been really quiet. Even for Smash For even I dont think I can say he was unpopular he was never really at the forefront of discussion. Im pretty sure his thread was nearly dead too. Maybe those same fans are still just really quiet lol

Let's say that each character somehow gets more than 8 color swaps this time, either 10 or 12 if you can think of enough, what would you want from whichever characters you use? Not counting full on costume changes that is.

Mario: I'd probably pick Maker Mario, NES Mario and/or Ice Mario

Samus: The Green and Blue suits from Metroid Prime 2's Multiplayer. They look pretty cool, and are pretty different to her other Green and Blue alts.

Mega Man: A Purple costume like Black Hole Bomb, Orange and White(Up-Smash and Side B moves had these colors in the original games)and Rolling Cutter(Black and White)

Ryu: I think a couple based on Ken and Sean would ideal, Dan too, even without the undershirt. There's also Alpha Evil Ryu(darker skin, dark gray gi with some red), and SF4 Evil Ryu(red hair, darker skin, purple gi).

Link: That one "Boss" color from Hyrule Warriors, same for Ganondorf and Zelda.

I think the disappearance of aldelaro5, which was flat out the most involved Paper Mario supporter back then, has at least something to do with it.

I remember that the day the Paper Mario stage was revealed, everybody on the daily thread was overjoyed for him. Good times.

The more I've thought about it the more I think Paper Mario will be in this game. I've never had much confedence in his inclusion in any Smash game, until now.

There, that's why it's probably a good thing I'm not Sakurai.

I think Chibi at least has a decent chance. Not probable, but for currently unknown reasons, Nintendo tweeted that picture of Chibi Robo 2 years and a couple months since his most recent game. Could mean nothing in regards to Smash, but we just don't know right now. However, in my opinion, Nintendo wouldn't have tweeted anything related to Chibi Robo if they had given up on the franchise. It's well past time Nintendo stopped advertising/supporting Zip Lash, so it couldn't have been related to that.

The biggest contributor that I can think of isn't really active anymore, as far as I know.

But I do think the few recent titles somewhat split the fanbase. With that aside, I think Paper Mario's chances of being playable are at its highest right now. Especially if the roster was decided back in 2014-2015.

So....have anyone considered a "championship" type of mode where you'd have to fight certain players to become the champion? Similar to how WWE games work with putting championships on the line.

So for example, if White Mario beats Blue Mario for the championship, only White Mario will have an icon with a championship type and that attire must defend the championship only. He/she can participate in other championships as well

World Championship - Top title
International Championship - Secondary title
Extreme Championship - Items are allowed in this fight as the fights are supposed to be "extreme"
Lightweight Championship - lightweight fighters only
Women's Championship - Female Smash characters only (Wii Fit, Villager, Robin, Corrin will all use their female attires here)
Tag Team Championship - a team of 2 players winning belts
Women's Tag Team Championship - a team of 2 women winning belts
Trio Tag Team Championship - a team of 3 players winning belts
Quad Tag Team Championship - a team of 4 players winning belts

Would be cool to see this type of feature online as well playing with your friendsv

Sometimes I get the impression that people that want a new Mario character are only doing it to fill out some imaginary quota, instead of actually wanting to play as the character.

I was under the impression that the opposite was the case. Everyone, as far as I can tell, recognizes that all the important Mario characters are there. I think people just actually want Waluigi and (Captain) Toad.

Toad: I have a soft spot from his appearances in his series cuz of their personality and hospitality, and I prefer playing him over Waluigi in the spinoffs.
Paper Mario: I love the first three games, TTYD being one of my favorite games of all time. I prefer for them to be his primary source material, otherwise Geno.
K Rool:
I haven't played the Donkey Kong series much, but the series is lacking in villains, so go K Rool.
Ridley: He's the most recurring main antagonist in Metrokd, so go him as well.
Impa: She's pretty cool, more interesting and is the most recurring legacy character outside of the main trio.
Decidueye: He's my starter in moon, I like his design the most out of the Alolan starters and it would be interesting to see a true archer character in Smash.
Marx: Bandanna Dee has more of a resume, but I haven't played any of the games where he takes on more of a major role, plus I prefer the og backstabber who left you to rot in the void of space. I think Marx would have more of a interesting moveset with his powers.
Isabelle: She's my most wanted newcomer for this game. Once I met her ingame, it took no time for her to become my favorite Animal Crossing characterl because: she's the Mayor...'s Assistant, hardworking and adorable. It helps that she quickly made more apppearances, including crossovers. (cough She's the only guest character in main Mario Kart game that currently isn't playable in Smash.) As shown several by various people in this thread, she has moveset potential.
Twintelle: YASS QUEEN YASS
Medusa:
Hades is a great character, but I would prefer the og villain. I liked what I saw from her relatively little screentime in KIU., and she works as Palutena's foil. Plus, she's voiced by Cree Summers.
Wolf: I played as him in Brawl and I kinda want him back pls; I even voted for him in the ballot.
Black Shadow: I don't really have a preference, but I guess I'll choose Black Shadow because go villains go.
Crash: I played more Crash than Spyro in my childhood.
Rayman: I played a bit of Rayman Origins and Legends and he seems pretty cool, and I don't want the proto-minions.
Simon Belmont: For the sweet Captain N reunion.

Paper Mario would genuinely be fun to play I feel, if he's anything like the games he comes from. Everyone else, I'd feel pretty indifferent too unless I saw their gameplay first hand.

Nah man, my love of Toad is legit.

I genuinely like the idea of Captain Toad, a character who manipulates the stage to progress, having a move which allows him to summon a platform.

My idea is a Pull Switch special like in Treasure Tracker where he can gain some vertical height without the need for jumps.

A stage manipulator is something new, it fits the character to a tee and I think it'd have a lot of practical applications such as shielding from projectiles, edge guarding and gaining higher ground to attack from!

Thoughts guys?

I've been wanting to play as Toad outside of Mario games(and MUGEN) and I genuinely like Paper Mario. I also wanted Bowser Jr. for Smash 4, and got my wish.

No quota in my case. I just found those choices interesting. Though not all of my rosters really thought it through as much as they could. I just mostly added ones I would enjou having in.

It's probably the PM 3DS/Wii U games being badly received thing. I doubt people oppose him, but the allies were the life of the game for so many of us yet he'll likely get in either as him on his own with only the basic paper stuff or with Sticker Star/Colour Splash/Paper Jam inspiration, so they're not really jumping for him either.

Nope. If anything people think Mario has too many reps.

There's just a lot of colorful characters from that universe that could be fun to play as, and as the face of Nintendo, I'm fine with however many they want to add.

Waluigi would be fantastically fun as a fighter.
Paper Mario could be so unique.
Almost any Mario rep would be welcome in my books.

Besides, it's not as if the argument that "people only want X to fill a quota" can only apply to Mario. I mean how many times have you heard throughout the internet Smash arguments surrounding an ARMS "rep", another Xenoblade "rep", another Zelda "rep", another DK "rep", a Gen 7 "rep" or even third-party "reps"?

huh

Now that i think about it maybe this is a Pac Man case. People are worried aboit ghostly adventures/stickers and paint instead of the classics and shutting up, but a reveal would be hype if it's classic.

Fun to see more Mugen players. Hooked since 09'. Still, not that many good Nintendo characters out there just yet.

I also think that we should not think in quota on how many characters a series is allowed to have. There is no limit. Mario, Pokémon and Fire Emblem dominates right now, and if you imagine no cuts happening, I can still see more playables from those series. It's just less likely that it will fill with too many new ones, but new ones? Yes, that will happen.

I'm trying to think of what new Pokemon could take a similar role to these two from Sun/Moon... I mean, even with the fact Totem Pokemon can call for help, that doesn't give an easy choice. Just a justification for a swarm option.
Hit me with that Vikavolt: "It zips around, on sharp lookout for an opening. It concentrates electrical energy within its large jaws and uses it to zap its enemies."
Perhaps a few could hold Charjabugs too (on the right) causing them to deal increased electrical damage, like some sort of mini Volt Tackles.

Sometimes I get the impression that people that want a new Mario character are only doing it to fill out some imaginary quota, instead of actually wanting to play as the character.
I do not even want Waluigi to fit a quota; however, I do not want to play as him either. I doubt he will be my style unless Opossums idea of a dancer is incorporated into the move-set, or the dirty fighting idea. In fact, the only characters that I want and know I will play as are Inklings and Springman. I love zoning and boxing, so Springman is a sort of two for one. Rosalina and Little Mac are the only Smash 4 newcomers that I play consistently.

The child in me would totally play something wild such as the four champions (and I always wanted Deku Link, Zora Link, and Goron Link, it is and always has been, to this day, my dream request). I would have played Pokemon Trainer had it not been for the fatigue mechanic and Squirtle being my least favorite of the Kanto starters. If it was Bulbasaur, Wartortle and Charizard, I would have been all over that. Or just Blastioise and Charizard would have been fine.

In other words, I already know I am not going to play most of the characters. Ridley is one of my most anticipated, and yet, I doubt I will play him. I just want him because he deserves to be there. Oh, and I want to fight him. I actually liked the Ridley boss fight in Pyrosphere, sue me.

huh

Now that i think about it maybe this is a Pac Man case. People are worried aboit ghostly adventures/stickers and paint instead of the classics and shutting up, but a reveal would be hype if it's classic.

Haha yeah... at least Paper Mario's design itself has stayed consistent all this time, so it's definitely more of a moveset thing which gets people wary, since the recent games' gameplay elements have had such mixed reception. Though I personally found Color Splash really enjoyable so I wouldn't mind if a move or two was inspired from it. Sticker Star I'm indifferent towards.

And I guess some people don't want a third Mario in? That's sort of a silly thing though seeing how Paper Mario is pretty far from regular Mario, but to each their own of course. But yeah, I agree that now would be the time to support Paper Mario, he's pushed on through, like, every console since debut, even Wii U got a piece of him.

So Switch better get a PM game of its own as well!
