Everyone here is assuming hardcore players love K. Rool and Ridley.
I'm just here as a hardcore player liking K. Rool, Isabelle, and Incineroar.

Stereotypes. Hardcore fans generally aren't seen as huge fans of newer characters.

If y'all are talking about how casuals or w/e understand Smash my sister barely ever plays and she think PP is a hilariously good edition just bc of how unorthodox of a pick it is. And I mean I think that when casual players look at it they think kinda similarly, I mean a lot of my friends who only sorta know Smash saw PP they couldn't control their laughter, and tbh neither could I. It's the kind of surprise joke/meme pick that, while it might not break the internet a la Sora or Banjo, it's still spawning plenty of memes and fanart and jokes while being incredibly recognizable so the joke doesn't fall flat AND it's rights and legal **** are already there and Nintendo doesn't have to pay any extra money for anything. Really the only people I've seen upset by it are people who are upset by their most wanted being disconfirmed

Exactly, you should have a balance of choices that to appeal both, I’m just disagreeing with the sentiment that it’s strictly impossible for casual fans to appreciate choices like K. rool. Geno’s really obscure, but if you give him a cool trailer and make him look cool, people will like him. Simple as that.

But the point I'm trying to get at is that players will almost always appreciate the characters they knew beforehand more than the characters they're just now learning about.

It's making a character you know look cool vs. making a character you don't know look cool.

Because hardcore players tend to be older themselves, so they prefer older characters.

You're underestimating how positively human brain reacts to stuff it recognizes.

Again, does it matter that much? Character itself is the most important part of, well, characters. Yes, people react positively to things they recognise. It’s why piranha plant makes sense as a wtf pick. People are also going to react positively to characters that just look appealing and are presented well, even if they don’t know them.

It does make a difference, and the reactions are almost never the same. You could make Katalina one of the most unique characters on the roster, but do you honestly think casuals would appreciate her more than the "flavor of the month" Pokemon who gets added in every Smash?

People feel strongly about characters they know; they aren't going to automatically get behind any character with a cool moveset if they don't know anything about the character or their franchise.

I'm just happy for other people. Only newcomers I gave a hoot about were Isabelle and Incineroar. And sorta K. Rool.

It's almost entirely nostalgia. People grew up with that game, told themselves, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if that puppet dude got in Smash?", and have been trying to get him in Smash ever since.

I played his game, and I don't see the appeal. That's just my personal opinion though. Clearly a lot of people disagree with me on that.

I can't speak for what a "group of hardcore fans" want at any specific time. I can only speak for what I want, and I know that what will make me satisfied is a Yoshi character added and an Assist Trophy (and a high tier Yoshi). I will never ask for anything again after that.

Obviously people are gonna feel strongly about characters they know, I’m arguing that if you present characters in cool ways you can make them appealing.

I can’t fault people greatly for thinking other characters could be cool but yeah people tend to move goalposts way too much.

How is this realistically looking?

That's only how they appear in the in-game sprites, Amano's design is more..uh..realistic?
Though he did no artwork for Chocobo in Final Fantasy VI, he did do artwork for Final Fantasy V, which used a similar aesthetic for its sprites as FFVI did...and is much better then the bald pterodactyl-chicken design found in Final Fantasy II..

If we're going to go by how characters looked in chibified sprites, then Terra wouldn't really look how she does in the Dissidia Final Fantasy series, her in-game portrait art, nor the original designs by Amano but rather by the Chibi Sprites done by Tetsuya Nomura.

Some Chocobo in the Final Fantasy have a more anime aesthetic, yes, like in Final Fantasy VII, but most of the time they are meant to be more realistic as opposed to more cute and cartoony like the Chocobo series version of the character is.

I do beg to differ though. It would be pretty nice to have SE's mascot, Chocobo in the game along side Cloud. That's what I think anyway. Of course there are many standard chocobos around, but if they were going to choose one chocobo to represent them all, it would clearly be the one with his own series of games.

As for Sakurai name dropping Terra and Bartz before, just remember he's not the one picking out the DLC this time around. It's all in Nintendo's and Square Enix's hands now! I'm just really wondering who they will both end up agreeing on in the end. The suspense is killing me~

Square-Enix, similar to Capcom, doesn't have a mascot..they do have mascot characters, but that would be the trio of Chocobo, Moogle, and Slime..any of them could be seen as Square-Enix's unofficial mascot similarly to Capcom's unofficial mascots being Mega Man, Ryu, and Servbots from Mega Man Legends (seriously, they cameo in more things then Mega Man or Ryu at this point).

Yes, that is true..and I do believe Sakurai would actually have been more likely to pick Chocobo then either Square-Enix or Nintendo, considering he likes off the wall choices, whereas business minded Square-Enix and Nintendo would be more likely to try and pick a character to advertise a series or new entry such as Dragon Quest XI or Kingdom Hearts III (which would be Disney's final decision, but SE could want to advertise it since it is a big name game for them), or even another popular character like 2B, a mainline Final Fantasy character, etc.

I'm really, really not trying to be a dream crusher about this..I'm just trying to say not to expect something that, at least to me, feels very unlikely..the Chocobo series has never been a huge money making series regardless of how well Chocobo as a creature is known and beloved.
