Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Bruh, so many Leak Warriors in here now. Glad I didn't believe the Grinch stuff, but still.

Tell me about it. It'd be great if Amiibo can unlock characters early. I got the Mega Man one from a while ago and I wouldn't mind using him only on World of Light.
Wasn't that confirmed already? Though I doubt it'd have qn impact on WoL
OK insiders now tell me
Will Ultimate have a 2nd wave of DLC
No

I have big doubts about this Hitagi person

Though I think it's reasonable to think we'll get either a Square or Namco character if not both

The DLC only consisting of 1st party characters sounds like a missed opportunity to me

okay so hitagi is definitely just doing this for attention, he basically just admitted to knowing nothing
It's fairly rare to have someone with a proven track record be responsible for a leak. Most come from new people, and often, those people aren't 100% confident in their own intel, either. This becomes a catch-22. You either wait until after your info is proven legit, in which case no one will believe you had it, or you post it early and risk the chance that you're wrong. I don't necessarily consider a lack of confidence in their info a mark against a leak.

I am, for various reasons, rooting against this one, but it's much too early to rule it out.

Yeah, I'm sure there's at least 1 Third Party DLC character. As far as more "major" Nintendo characters, Dixie, Elma or B.Dee could happen. Don't know for sure if we'd get another FE or Pokemon character, but it could happen. A shame that an ARMS character is unlikely.

What did the dude ask?
he asked if there's going to be a second wave, which is, again, not something we can actually prove will or will not happen. there's evidence for either happening, but its not safe to completely rule it out so soon

so don't be mean to a new guy alright

I'm going to believe Hitagi for now, or at least take his words into consideration. After the Grinch fiasco, I'm beginning to believe leakers a lot more (especially ones Vergeben backs)
Katalina is still a horrible choice though.

I think Nintendo being in charge of the DLC picks is actually a good omen for more DLC beyond those first five. It means the decision doesn't lie solely with Sakurai, and while Nintendo has always given Sakurai a great deal of professional courtesy and leeway with the franchise, I think if Nintendo decides they want more, they're going to get it, with or without him.

They've also spoken at length recently about giving more DLC support to their larger titles. I don't consider Wave 2 'confirmed' in even the smallest sense, but if they want to keep going with DLC, Smash is maybe the moneymaker.

osby osby You wanted Palutena footage, right? Well, here's a showcase of her moves, if that helps...
Much appreciated, thanks!

EDIT: Wow, everything she does looks so much faster now. I guess they don't have to worry about Lightweight making her broken again. And it seems she still has Warp. Not the most unique up special but it was useful so I'm glad.

Maybe, but I don't want to get my hopes up either.

Most other fighting games have had multiple seasons, so it isn't impossible. Tekken 7, Street Fighter V, Mortal Kombat X, Killer Instinct 3 and Injustice 2. I'm also curious if DBFZ will get another Season, given how popular that game is. I hope so, because I'm really liking Cooler out of the DLC guys.

It's also pretty cocky to just assume that there is defintley gonna be a second wave of DLC...
My best recommendation is just be happy with what we're currently getting...

2nd DLC wave is pretty likely, considering this game is being released only a year into the Switch's life

Pessimism is the key to Smash speculation, my guy. Expect nothing beyond what's been explicitly promised and then be pleasantly surprised if there's more afterwards.

how is considering the possibility, especially when we have a somewhat relaible source, cocky?

i'm not saying its 100% going to happen, i'm just saying that just saying "No" when someone asks a question no one can really answer is kind of dickish

I know that Nintendo said it was doubling down on DLC efforts for evergreen titles, but when you've a roster that has 76 characters at base and so far no(?) titles that have exceeded their initial DLC season/plan, I'm still pretty skeptical as to getting additional seasons.

Eleven (presumably - it could be a smaller season) DLC characters and a roster pushing 90 also seems... optimistic.

chill out with that, we haven't even started the first batch of dlc, how can we know if there's going to be a second one yet
This.

Expecting a second wave is just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

However, Bayonetta also came into Smash 4 in February 2016. Which is very late compared to the rest. Almost a full year after Mewtwo in April 2015. I wouldn't put it past Sakurai to begin development on ANOTHER SMASH right after the end of the DLC. I think we might see a new Smash before 2022 honestly. It sells like hotcakes, has a lot of surrounding hype, sells amiibos faster than any other game and also consistantly makes sure new amiibo figurines need to be made, lots of third party interesst. Yes I could see a new Smash or a new Smash spin-off easily in the upcoming few years. Since Smash 4 was already used as a great template for Ultimate, as it seems no other 2 Smash games are this similar in terms of engine, character movesets and what not.. I predict that a new Smash game is wayyyyy easier to realise, and the Switch is also doing very great. So yeah.

I won't expect DLC Wave 2, I expect a new Smash game way earlier than expected. Because Ultimate also came wayyyyy earlier than most of us expected. And even IF there's more DLC characters than we expect, I won't expect more than a few extra Echoes honestly.

Just because one source hints at it, it doesn't mean it's 100% happening...

A second wave of DLC is possible, but for now, I'm assuming we're five and done. Very rarely will Nintendo continue updating a game past a year since its launch. There's only one or two exceptions, with Splatoon 2 being the most notable one (and despite being a game that's extremely popular in Japan and relies heavily on updates, it seems like it'll end after two years exactly).

I won't discourage anyone from hoping for the best, but try to be realistic too. Ultimate will die down eventually, and people may not be as interested in DLC as they were in the first few months.

The contention relies almost entirely on the air dodge. Plus a lot of the info on frame data is being contradicted. This is what happens when there's only one person providing the footage...
All the data gathered now is close to meaningless tbh. It's so preliminary it really doesn't do more than paint a very rough picture which will probably get supplanted if not entirely discarded once people actually own the game and can spend significant time with it.
