Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Unpopular Opinion: I like Simon more than Richter due to his design being more mature and detailed in comparison.

I hope assist trophies appear in spirit fights/World of Light. That would be sick. It would honestly be a missed opportunity if they went through the trouble of emphasizing that you can kill assist trophies and not let us fight them in modes other than the typical smash mode. The could be like pseudo boss fights.

I've slowly come to realize that :ulttoonlink: is probably going to be the least played character because of :ultyounglink:

It'd be a rare sight to see one who'd prefer to play as Toon over Young.

You say that, but Toon Link popped up several times the past few days and I've seen one match with Young Link.

Thats a fair stance to take. I will stick with that Square will not budge and its out of Sakurai's hands when it comes to Geno as a playable character, due to Square's interference.

Im not too familiar with Goemon, but you make a fair point. His more cartoonish look would fit more than the realism of Simon. As for Bethesda's involvement I just hope its that they are putting music in Smash from Bethesda. That would be amazing has they have beautiful music from composer Jeremy Soule.

Here's an example of some of his work, this is him with another composer. Im not saying this is the specific the song they would use, but something around that effect.
Bets are placed XD

Oh! Not because he's more cartoonish (although that adds to it). In short, beside Frogger he's the oldest Konami IP (May 1986), been their mascot for a big chunk of their history, has more games than any of their IPs despite his last being in 2011 (Castlevania just cought up for that) (Technically his last was in 2017 on SFC mini, though that was just a port). Has one of the greatest music tracks in gaming (that's a game high point, not because I'm a fan).

Goemon games are a parody based on a real Japanese folk legend that goes by the name Ishikawa Goemon, a charitable theif/ninja (just like Robin Hood) lived in the 1500's (Edo era). He's also infamous for his end (I'll keep that for later if you're interested).

Goemon games are called The Mystical Ninja in the west, Ganbare Goemon in Japan (means, keep going Goemon or Never give up Goemon). A bizzare comical master platformer (if it didn't had the better camera I'd definitely say it surpasses Mario 64). Out of his 34+ games (not counting ports, that would be 54), unfortunately only 5 made it to the west (3 of were one of the greatest, establishing quite a fanbase), this was unfortunately due the Konami's conviction that many of the jokes wouldn't be understood by the west.

A platformer were you play using instant change between the 4 ninja crew. Goemon, the hot blooded ninja. Ebisumaru, Goemon's first friend the wacky fat ninja. Sasuke, the mechanical wooden doll ninja. Yae, the agent spy ninja. They're all based on folk names btw (except Yae, I'm not sure). I can of course delve into their excellent moves set that fit Smash perfectly, but I'll stop for the sake of not making this a text wall. (I'll say though, one of Goemon's moves is turning into a super sayian).

This is an epic music no denying, and although it's been used as an intro, outro and for FE stages. I honestly do think that epic music are a bit too intense for Smash. Or maybe because it's not my main cup of tea. I'd like to link some Mystical Ninja music, but thought it might ruin your epic mood.

I honestly believe the first pack will either release with or shortly after Piranha Plant. If it's the Square Enix rep, this has been in the works since at least September, if not longer given that Verge's source for the SE Rep either has to do with development or play-testing. Either that or the first and second packs will release together after E3 2019. Pack 1 gets revealed at the VGAs for a Summer 2019 release, Pack 2 gets revealed at E3 and BAM they release together on the same day.

Imagine if we get Sora and Steve together on the same day. How much chaos would that cause?

@TotsBS and @Nekoo sick 'em boys.

Yes, it does.

And it's beautiful.
What!! You think two of the most iconic characters are going to be release on the same day, you have to be crazy, but that’s such amazing idea that I do want to see the fan reactions on getting both Sora & Steve now because that will be hype

Why, is :ultyounglink: better?
Not at all. They're entirely different. If anything, :ultyounglink: will eat into :ultlink:'s userbase, because he's more like the old, regular-bomb Link, only faster.

:ulttoonlink: is a much more aerial fighter who doesn't feel remotely the same to play as the normal "Link". I've never really thought the two were all that comparable.

Remember when people though Ridley wouldn't get into Smash because he's too big?
Since then we got Ridley, K. Rool, and a Piranha Plant.
Man this timeline is both amazing and weird at the same time.

Wait... He takes damage from water? Is that canon
Canonically, Sonic can't swim (iirc) , so it makes some sense for him to take damage in water.

Just to clarify, it's not that people thought he was too big. It's that Sakurai bluntly said it. A decade and a half of fans nagging him finally broke him though.

(And I actually don't like Ridley's Smash design and think maybe Sakurai was right the first time, but that's an extremely unpopular opinion here.)

Sonic can't swim. He's never been able to, and it's a running joke within the canon. So instead of making him immediately sink to his death, they just make him take damage.

It's a really nice touch.

Canonically, Sonic hates water and cannot swim. Yet does this happen to Charizard and Incineroar? Inkling? Does Squirtle swim forever?

Well, in Brawl, Charizard (water), Ivysaur (fire) and Squirlte (electricity or grass) took more damage from attacks that were their respective weakness. I'm not sure if that carried over to Ultimate though.

I'm actually re-advising my DLC predictions:

- Geno (Sakurai has image rights to this character, otherwise he clearly wouldn't be in the game at all. There's no reason to stop there and I doubt Square would go ''Sure do everything but make him playable." Something does not add up with his scenario and I feel it's because much like Ridley and Inkling before him Geno is leading the DLC charge. I truly feel the only way Square might be being stingy with him is that they saw sells of the Mii Fighter costume and demanded they get a DLC slot and cut for him in Smash Ultimate. Sakurai needs a lead in, why not a Smash fan favorite? It's win win.)

- Heihachi/Tekken content (I find it suspicious that Akira was shown off as an assist trophy and we got Tekken and Virtua Fighter content in Smash during the Smash 4 DLC era, but Heihachi or Tekken are not represented. Tekken is the modern juggernaut of fighting games. Sakurai appears to love a challenge and has been on record saying implementing Heihachi into Smash would be difficult but interesting so he clearly has ideas for how. I think this will be Heihachi's turn to join the roster)

- Elma (Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was deliberately given a ''Here's your consolation prize", yet so far we've seen nothing of sorts for Xenoblade Chronicles X. You have Skrell spirits, and a lack of music from the game as far as I know. Have we even seen Elma as a spirit? Where is the content for her game? I'm betting it's because she's one of the 5 DLC characters. I don't know much about her as a character, but clearly Sakurai has considered the Xenoblade franchise important to Smash now and adding Elma is the next logical step)

The other two is where it gets shaky. I don't know who or what they may be. We may get Sora later to be a Cloud level surprise if Disney played ball. We might get Banjo if Microsoft didn't want Minecraft content. We might get Steve, because Minecraft let's face it is a juggernaut and there's a lot of moveset potential in a game that's all about building.

And then we might just get 2 more Nintendo characters to go along with Elma.

But I'm pretty dead set on the first 3.

How dead set? As dead set as I was about Bayonetta being in Smash 4 at some point back when you were all calling me nuts and crazy and it'd never happen.

And well, you see what happened there.

I have a moveset idea for Troubador (From FE Fates): (Moveset not final)
Neutral Special: Item Use: Use the item you are currently holding.
Side: Move: based on the movement from the FE series, it's a command dash that automatically goes fast within the moves duration, similar to Palutena's super speed, you can do 2 things to cancel, attack or stop. You also get some invisible frames from startup.
Up: No idea
Down: Item Switch: Swap your 5 items, each with their own purpose: Freeze staff, Debuff staff, Tome Moonlight, Ranged staff and vulenerary.
Character Specific trait: Mount: Troubador would be in his horse at the start of the match, but (Similar to Johnny in All Star Battle) if you take enough huge hits, you fall out of your horse, which makes you overall weaker, you can get on the horse by jumping on it, or jump under it.

Gentilhomme: If undamaged for 2 seconds, your defense will be raised by 3 percent as well as knockback
That's all I have so far.

Why not just take the Troubadour/Horse Mage moveset from Fire Emblem Warriors?

At the very least it could give you some much needed ideas, if not make for a straight up improvement.

I would do that for at least on normal, smashes, and final smash, but I wanted the specials to be based more on the central/normal mechanics of fire emblem in a more unique way since others only showcase their weapon, some skills, and counter. However I would still consider your advice.

Everyone is back...

But his own personal mode isn't.
Maybe that's why he's happy.

On the one hand, I love Sandbag and would be sad if he was gone.

On the other hand, every time he appears it'll remind me of the loss of stadium modes and make me sad.

Guess I'll turn him off in the item switch while being happy he's in.

I don't think I've ever done anything in Stadium Mode that wasn't with the sole goal of unlocking something.
