Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I think the only likely candidate is Dovahkiin

Vault Boy is a bit too niche
Doom Guy would bump up the rating
And let's just say Wolfenstein is a definite no
Dovahkiin wouldn't happen. I don't think Sakurai would want Skyrim in Smash. It just doesn't feel right.

The, the only character I truly want as DLC are the Chorus Kids lol

Smash 4 technically is still incomplete and since Chrom got in I've wanted them even more lol. However their franchise is pretty obscure so I can't see it happening aside from maybe a free DLC offer

It's not that they are easy to make, it's that they take several times less to dev time to develop than uniques.

People would probably rather them spend the time developing these 5 DLC well and leave the chance open for possibly more unique DLC, instead if spending the time doing Echoes.
Well, this is absolutely true, and since they will be working only on Unique newcomers for DLC, i think the quality will be over the top

I dont know if i should bring this up its a mood killer and probably against the rules but remember how i said REEEEEEEEra cares more about far left politics pushing? Well a friend of mine told me theres now a movement to boycott Smash Ultimate not because the box theory was correct or because piranha plant is a free dlc like we have some people (not alot) here doing. Its cuz not enough token blacks to meet the quota of approval..

In a game where an anthromorphic fox can fight a green dinosaur..

Pass the Sobieski!
So here's the thing, while I think boycotting Smash Bros Ultimate for this reason isn't logical, I also think they somewhat have a point.
Most Nintendo games have generically light-skinned protagonists. This is because Japan is mostly homogenous and most Japanese people are light-skinned. So of course there are few black characters in Smash Ultimate. Having said that, Nintendo has made strides in improving this recently, with players being able to change their player character's skintone in Splatoon and Pokemon games. But there still hasn't been a major (EDIT: named and playable and human) Nintendo character who is not light-skinned.

If Nintendo were an American company I'd say this was pretty uncool, but being Japanese, it's a different culture and it isn't really fair to judge them in the same way. Somewhat related, I would recommend people check out this YouTube video.

I don't know if you've played DQ games or been familiar but they're all very recognizable. There're not many, one per game, that' 11. And I think most DQ fans will agree that the most recognizable is either Hero of Alefgard or Erdrick.
Having many protagonists also didn't stop Sakurai from picking Cloud out of all FF protagonists. Which are more than DQ, and honestly the ones vagually distinguishable. And personally, to me almost all FE reps look the same. DQ has a long history and been designed by Toriyama himself. The designs are known and loved by many in Japan.
Erdrick would be interesting, and sorry unfortunately I am not very familiar with Dragon Quest. However I love Akira Toriyama's work as I am a huge Dragon Ball fan. Personally I wouldn't be against it if it happened and I speculate if they put a Dragon Quest character. It would be the Dragon Quest 11 hero, which I do not believe he has a name.

Im still hoping for Sora, but I would be ok if its not him. I just do not believe that Geno will make it in over Sora, a Dragon Quest character or Lara Croft. When they all are still relative, and represent the company more. On a side note if Sora does make it, I do not know how they will work around his keyblade charm. As it is a mickey mouse symbol, and im sure Nintendo will want to avoid Disney references.

Agreed. Even if we don't "like" every newcomer for DLC, we can probably be guaranteed a character with tons of personality and effort out into them.

That being said, if they were to make more even after that, id rather them make one more unique, than make 5 more echo fighters. But, let's see what they do, I have a feeling we'll get a few echo fighters offered for free next year or small purchase on the side.

Really? How So?
Skyrim's pretty well known in Japan...
Yeah but it just doesn't seem like a Sakurai thing to do. Based on the characters he's chosen in the past, Dovahkiin just seems too out of place. Snake was a request and is a Japanese character. Dovahkiin is an American character from an American IP. I think Minecraft will be the first American IP to get a playable character, and the only one for this game

Well yeah japan will japan but i hardly see the point when you can have a pink puff ball fight to the death against an electric yellow mouse.. out of the 75? someone count that for me characters. about 32 of them give or take are non human period.. and then theres characters like Pit and Dark Pit whoa re technically non human, or Mega Man.. Basically when most the game is animal mascot types what does it even matter?

It would shock me if they were considered for dlc. Doomguy, maybe, but not Dovahkiin. Todd Howard would probably asked Sakurai about the possibilities and Sakurai would probably laugh at the thought
Skyrim being on Switch was a major get for Nintendo that showed off the power of the Switch and was heavily pushed in marketing. I don't think it's totally out of the realm of possibility that the idea was thrown around. Skyrim is big worldwide.

I'm not even a fan of the game, I just think it's silly to outright say it wasn't put on the table at all.

I agree it isn't that big of a deal for this particular game. I'm just saying the base idea is that like, there should be more diverse characters in games in general and in Nintendo games specifically. The nature of Smash Ultimate makes it difficult to include many since there haven't been many diverse human characters in past games.

Little Mac's trainer...
Fair enough, I should have been more specific. I was thinking more about playable, named characters. Little Mac's trainer is probably the most prominent, named character who falls in this category but he's not playable.

As long as the Echo choices make sense (like, say, Coco for Crash Bandicoot).

Little Mac's trainer...
Also.

It is huge in Japan, but from what I understand, people were saying that not many people voted for Isabelle. But of course, the more casual fanbase probably really wanted her, which is probably part of the reason why she got in as a unique fighter (along with many other reasons)
Makes sense. Outside Inkling, Isabelle has the most popularity overall of the newcomers this game

Anyone mind telling me why Resetera is considered so toxic? I know nothing about it, so I have no idea what goes down over there.

People actually want to boycott the game because there aren't enough dark-skinned characters? That's a pretty ridiculous reason if you ask me. They can try if they want, but it's not gonna do any good

Honestly, at this point, literally anything can be racist for some people. Neither issue has to be that relevant, but someone out there just wants to complain...
I see your'e a Ryu Hayabusa fan, I too am a huge fan. Just curious do you think he has a chance of making it into Smash Bros Ultimate. Given the high partnership with Koei Tecmo that Nintendo has had lately. And if they did partner in Smash Bros and put Ryu Hayabusa in. It could open the door for the fan requested Linkle to be in a future Smash game. Also the Ninja Gaiden game is a NES classic, it would be great to see Ryu Hayabusa, Simon Belmont and Samus altogether. Just wanted to see your thoughts on the matter.

I dunno most nintendo games are with non human protags like kirby, yoshi, and donkey kong. Then theres pokemon added race when they made the player character fully customizable which i think is the tops cuz honestly a pokemon protag should be a bit more like that because of what pokemon is.. So you cant say that nintendo isn't doing anything.

I dunno. I just don't see it happening. It's a big game, but it's not as big as Minecraft, which I think has a much better chance, even though I don't really want either in the game

Just because Merric's signature move is a wind spell, that doesn't make him a wind specialist.
Except he literally is though. His connection to Excalibur is a huge part of his character.

Hell, his title in-universe is the Wind Mage.

Yep. And I thought it was pretty funny when people on gamefaqs were trying to argue against her being playable in the game. They clearly don't know how Sakurai thinks :)

I agree with what you're saying here, and I also brought up the fact that Pokemon allowed for race customization.

I just think diversity in games is an important issue worthy of discussion! And that saying that isn't the same as saying Nintendo is racist.

I'm definitely not boycotting Smash Ultimate because of it tho lol.

So let me get this straight the Japanese don't boycott a game from Japan because it has a lack of Japanese fighters but Liberals who will never play the game are getting offended lmao okay then.

Run while you still can.
Oh come on, it can't be that bad-
*reads that they're boycotting Smash because it doesn't have any dark skinned people playable, even though Inklings have alts with dark skin*
Oh.
