Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I really liked Wii U and 3DS classic modes, only mode I was disappointed by was smash tour. I like the idea but it didn’t work for me.

...Dude. Do you have even the slightest idea of what kind of joke you made back there?
What's the general consensus of that Trophy Rush mode? I've never played it, but it looks stupidly addictive. It reminds me of mobile and flash puzzle games I used to play a lot when I had time to waste, specifically that Disney Tsum Tsum app. I never hear anything about it cause mode discussion this time around is usually limited to complaining about how much Classic and Smash Tour sucked.
Y’know, I actually forgot that mode was a thing.
It was neat I guess.

I explained the backstory behind my username, then everyone joined in.
My username is probably easy to guess, but here's my reasoning for it:

Sigma: I loved Mega Man X as a kid (and still do), and the "Maverick" icon resonated with me, where I associated it with the main antagonist of the X Series, Sigma. It wasn't until later in life that I found out that Sigma not only was a letter of the Greek alphabet, but also a mathematical function, so that took on a whole new meaning for me.

Mewtwo: :ultmewtwo:, to no one's surprise. He very quickly became my favorite Pokémon back when I started with Gen 1, and he's remained my overall favorite to this day.

As for why I combined the two, that involves another little wrinkle of my earlier time on the internet with a different username. I first went by Juuhachigou (or the Japanese name for Android 18) way back in the day on IGN, as I was a huge fan of Dragon Ball Z in my early teens and she was one of my favorite characters. I hadn't used the name anywhere else, and IGN was my place for gaming news before the advent of YouYube and social media. The name seemed cool at the time but it was a bit later (probably 5 years or so) that I felt I needed a change, so I then came up with "SigmaMewtwo." The name seemed to roll off the tongue for me and felt more unique in my opinion, so I decided to go with it.

There were a few occasions where I thought I should change it as time progressed, but I've grown accustomed to using it wherever I go, and I guess feel a bit sentimental about the name that I don't really want to change it now. So now, I go by it pretty much everywhere and anywhere I can.

In case anyone was curious about where my name came from and how I decided upon it, at least. :)

Fave Pokemon from each Gen and what they'd do as a Pokeball:

Gen 1: Magnemite - would cast Electric Terrain, doubling speed on the ground.
Gen 2: Heracross - flies across the screen like Super Sonic but slower, using Megahorn on whoever it hits.
Gen 3: Sableye - Mega-Evolves and uses Knock Off, damaging you and forcing you to lose your item if you have one
Gen 4: Tangrowth - uses Wring Out which deals more damage the closer to 0% you are.
Gen 5: Landorus - comes out Landorus-I, transforms into Lando-T, proceeds to wreck **** like only Lando can.
Gen 6: Hawlucha - uses Flying Press Snorlax-style but with a smaller hitbox, falling faster multiple times.
Gen 7: Palossand - uses Sand Tomb, burying and damaging opponents.
Kanto: Bulbasaur- Uses Razor Leaf and Vine Whip.
Johto: Typhlosion-Uses eruption to blast fighters close to it.
Hoenn: Gardevoir-Would use-oh wait, she's already a Pokeball!
Hoenn again: Sableye-uses power gem to chuck diamonds ate the fighters, then it quickly scurries to the other side of the stage and uses power gem again.
Sinnoh: Garchomp-Dragon Rushes left and right on the stage, wrecking any fighters in it's path.
Unova: Hydreigon-Flies around the stage using Tri-Attack.
Kalos: Noivern-Uses Boomburst to blow fighters away.
Alola: Poipole-Floats around the stage attacking fighters with Gunk Shot.

I doubt they would include the question mark in his name if he were added to Smash. A bunch of merch doesn't even include it. Maybe Microsoft dropped the question mark after the purchase. Smash could reference it by having Xander Mobus say Steve's name.
yeah nobody actually thinks that's what it'll be in the game. it's my preference though. Would give Xander an actual reason to read a name like a question

...I legitimately didn’t know that term had a racist connotation behind it. Yeah, it refers to someone’s skin color, but I didn’t know it was straight up racist. Thank god I know that now, spares me from some potential embarrassment in the future.

TIL, I guess.

Trophy Rush was a fun time-waster, and the achievements involving it could get pretty difficult.

Unfortunately, it was ultimate pretty forgettable compared to the other modes in the two Smash 4 versions...

You can probably figure out why.

But beyond that we talked about our favorite Pokemon and how we came up with our usernames

You just happened to come in at a bad time.

The reason I disliked Wii U classic mode was because of how unavoidable 5-8 player Smash was sometimes. Those matches get so ridiculously chaotic it doesn't always really feel like my skill matters and it's just better to try and camp and let the CPU wear themselves out against eachother. I understand the appeal of 8-player Smash but I hope the new classic mode doesn't force me into doing it on a cramped stage, especially now that all stages are available for 8-player Smash.

It's not exactly racist like Blackface, but it is a reference to x rated content that feeds off of racial stereotypes that I don't appreciate as a lad of African American origin.

Not a drought, fellas. Luigi's throws is new content and new music is very likely tonight.

Unless they repeat that sinful moment where they upload a song we can hear in a trailer

Incidentally, I was wondering about how many of such folks are visiting here.

Nah, don't ignore him. Report him. That way something actually gets done.

That's just a PSA for the thread in general. As fun as ridiculing racists is, it's best to just let the mods handle things instead of feeding the trolls.

Like, yes, kinda. We haven't actually seen Luigi's throws, so we're getting the smell of new content, not content itself.

Ummm...heyyy...

So is mine.

It just seems easy.
Wow, a seven word name, that's pretty long! (I'm being stupid)

Trying to come up with good usernames is one of the most consistent things that keeps me from joining forums.

Whenever people talk about "the drought", I start thinking of this old comic cover.

We are Jimmy Olsen and Aquaman, Sakurai plays the role of Superman.

Just cook some dinner and we'll go from there
Actually just did that.
Well, warmed up dinner I cooked the other day (It's a red pasta sauce with mushrooms, sausage, and onions) and made noodles to side with it. A little salty too, cause I was a bit stuffed up when I was making it so I couldn't taste properly.

Is that a hint?
Only time will tell.

Graizen, I just wanted to let you know that no matter what happens irl, you'll always have people to talk with and friends in this thread. Though we bicker, you're a very nice fixture here and honestly, seeing you feeling sad makes me feel sad!

Wishing you the absolute best. Hang in there. I know it may not mean much, but if you need to talk, you can private message me here and I'll respond ASAP.

Gen 1: Poliwrath - uses Dynamic Punch, putting hit enemies into a confused state.
Gen 2: Heracross - hard copy of what you said.
Gen 3: Sceptile - uses Leaf Blade, slashing forward like in Pokken Tournament.
Gen 4: Bastiodon - runs around, occasionally doing a short ramming dash. Iron Head blocks all attacks and nullifies all projectiles that hit it's face.
Gen 5: Krookodile - leaps forward with Crunch for enormous chomps.
Gen 6: Tyrantrum - runs forward at full ramming speed with Giga Impact, almost guaranteed 1-hit KO at the end of the dash.
Gen 7: Kommo-O - uses Clanging Scales to make a powerful burst of sonic energy around himself.

Or ignore him. That’s also an option. He’s either a troll, very stupid, or both. But which ever one of those he is, it’s best to just toss him aside and forget he exists. Lord knows we’ve derailed this thread enough lol.

You know this is kinda interesting, though maybe a bit depressing to think about; we’re all here theorizing and discussing what we’re wanting for ultimate, despite each of us likely parting ways entirely after it releases. Some here are on the more casual side of smash, who’d never ever think of going to a tournament, or even getting on for glory, others are far more towards the competitive side, going to their states local tournaments almost every month, hoping to eventually save enough money, and get enough recognition to travel to a larger scale tournament, and likely never touching online or not even remotely trying when they do. Others still are kinda in between, preferring online and maybe rarely if ever going to a real tournament, but still wanting to prove their skill on things like anthers ladder.

Parts of the smash community that rarely ever interact(and when they do it tends to be with some hostility to each other, with people from any side starting the arguments), yet for this short period, the speculation period before a new games release, everyone flocks to a thread like this, being “mostly” friendly/respectful to each other and only really discussing things such as which character they’re most excited to play as, or when the next direct is, or who the unrevealed characters are.

It’s a shame to think that once ultimate releases, just like in the past, many folks are just gonna go back to their old ways, attacking the other sides for “playing the games wrong” “relying on randomness to win” , “being WiFi Warriors and nothing else” etc. Some might stay here on Smashboards, others might abandon it altogether going back to ign, gamefaqs, reddit, w/e....
Well, I'll try to balance my time in many places, so I'll be present to many. I could mix my casual and competitive thoughts at least.

COOKING MAMA CONFIRMED
I realized I didn't describe it enough to make a difference, so I edited the post.
Now that I have posted about what the food is in the thread, maybe that'll change your guess.

I mean, of course Cooking Mama is in, though
