Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Interestingly, Brawl was the first Smash game I ever knew, but I was so young when I saw a paper with it in it, then I never really thought of it later. However, Meta Knight, the Brawl terror, got me wanting Smash 4 when I learned he was in it. I never exactly main him, but he became one of my top picks anyway.

I was very confused as to why people legitimately hated him, and I guess I started to learn more about the competitive community, and the games that existed, so one game and one character helped me see more of Smash, in terms of what was available.
Megaman in Smash 4 was basically what got me into gaming as a whole.

whats so special about sylux?? People talk about him all the time but I don't see the appeal.
He is a cool take for a new Metroid rep.

Okay, I see discussion has died down a bit. I guess I'll ask another question to increase it. What is the most unpopular opinion you hold in Smash, across all games? Or opinions, if you have multiple.
Across all games?
Welp, time to castrate myself.

Smash, like other fighters, should be balanced and appealed to the competitive community as they are the ones that devote the most time into the game post-release.
Most clones are wastes of character potential that never get a chance to truly shine as their own character.
Sakurai's insistence on keeping characters the same as to not alienate previous fans is actually harmful to the game and gets very stale especially when they're introduced as clones or with inaccurate movesets.
Unlocking characters is a dumb time-waster that effectively accomplished nothing but lock characters behind menial tasks.

Oh and probably the most unpopular one:
Story modes in fighting games are huge wastes of resources as they are always universally terribly told, misrepresent the characters, take a huge amount of time and money to make, and worst of all, are boring slogs where the player has to beat up hordes of uninteresting AI bots for what is essentially a 1-2 minute cutscene at the end of the level.

Brawl is the best entry in the series.

You quite literally answered my question above without even seeing the message in the first place. Impressive. Impressive...
LOL, yeah I had a pretty good chuckle when I saw that. :p

To add on more unpopular opinions...

*If a new Smash game rebooted the roster and went back down to Brawl size, I would not be upset by it.

*A lot of people seem on board with Ken, but, uh...yeah, I'm kinda not TBH. He's probably one of my least favorite SF characters. Even as an Echo, I'm not thrilled about him potentially being in, but eh, it's whatever, lol.

*I wouldn't mind seeing more Mario.

*I wouldn't mind more Fire Emblem either as long as they don't use a gosh darn sword.

*Splatoon could easily receive 2 more newcomers.

*Animal Crossing still has newcomer potential.

*I would rather another Mario character over Geno. Please don't hurt me.

*Lara Croft would be a fantastic second SE rep.

*The Rabbids from Kingdom Battle would low key be one of the best newcomers IMO.

*Steve would be awesome.

I think the reason he's been getting lot of attention lately is because the ending of Metroid Prime 3 is setting him up to be the main antagonist and given focus for Metroid Prime 4. Considering how Sm4sh had :ultcorrin: to promote the game he/she appeared in it wouldn't be too out of the question for Sylux to be given the same treatment to promote Metroid Prime 4.

Same reasons we may also get a TH FE character (Edelgard most likely) and Gen 8 Pokemon. Maybe even Sora for Kingdom Hearts III.

In terms of ones, I can say without getting too much backlash, I will say that Brawl isn't as bad as all of the Melee purists say it is. Sure there's tripping, but that rarely happens... And Brawl is probably the best Smash game to play at parties... Also, the story mode was pretty dope...
I never had a problem with tripping... since I mostly play :jigglypuff: and :zelda::p

And yeah, thanks to story mode and other fun parts, I never dropped Brawl entirely. It's still fun.

He was one of the playable hunter in the DS game, he is also a mysterious character with a hatred for the Federation and was part of a sequel hook in Metroid Federation Force for the 3DS

Ohh wait my most unpopular opinion

I'm okay with 15 Mario characters. 20. That's how influential I feel this series is, and I do feel Mario is the most iconic videogame character of all time, which is why I find it silly when people go like "MARIO HAS LIKE 9000 CHARACTERS WHY CAN'T FIRE EMBLEM HAVE MORE" as if Mario isn't the very soul and essence of Nintendo.

So yeah. My unpopular opinion? Bring on the Mario rep.

Unpopular opinion: Melee is by far the best Smash game across all relevant dimensions. Anyone who says otherwise is either not familiar with Melee, scared to face a truly deep metagame, not willing to do what it takes to understand the incredible nuance of Melee, or is simply trolling. We've had over fifteen years to uncover the extreme depths of Melee, and every step along the way has been a unique journey into one of the only video games that qualify as both experience and true art. There are still layers upon layers of meta to discover even at the highest levels, and it's possible that we could go deeper and deeper until the heat death of the universe. There is no game like Melee that combines physical skill, mental toughness, raw intelligence, strategy, psychology and art in such a perfect package.

He's been referenced in multiple games as a cliffhanger, like if he's behind something big (not Ridley, or maybe even Ridley) but they haven't shown his real intentions in a game yet.
Basically, it's not an important character yet but the people behind the Metroid series are teasing him like if he's going to become important very soon.
People have speculated that Metroid Prime 4 may be his game, but it's not confirmed yet.

Why couldn't they just stick with Ridley? K. Rool hasn't been relevant in years... I know he got in thanks to fan support, but still... He really isn't that major of a Nintendo villain...
Eh, he's pretty iconic to old fans but I kinda bummed Dixie Kong didn't got in, considering she also has history and still appeared in a recent, successful game unlike him.

I still found one more villain cool.

And maybe they wanted to add another villain of the Smash 64 franchises.

Notice that in K.Rool's trailer they show the some of the Smash 64 characters with their respective villains who are playable in Smash.

Fun fact.

The reason for King K. Rool's decade long absence is because Nintendo refused to let Retro Games use him and the Kremlings for the modern DKC games who actually wanted to use them for the first one.

I did not like supspace in brawl. I had enjoyed adventure mode in melee more but maybe because of the nostalgia I had with that mode. I just liked the concept of adventure mode of going to other characters universes. I hope the story mode is ultimate is a mixture of supspace and adventure so people can be happy.

I mean I'd love to hear more major villains.
DK is a huge series like it or not and K. Rool has made numerous appearances in tons of his games as the main villain.
I don't know what your definition of a major Nintendo villain is but it's odd to come at K. Rool when even Ganondorf's in the same game.

I guess, but I feel like If they were to add another DK character, It should have been Dixie Kong, she's still relevant compared to K. Rool and she's more iconic imo...

I hope for Crash and Banjo in regards to DLC.
No worries, Banjo will be in the base to free up a DLC spot for ya ;)

All kidding aside, it's one of the reasons why I personally avoid speculating too much about DLC until the game is out. Too many unknown variables until then.

In fairness, he was the main antagonist of one of the most successful titles Nintendo had during the SNES era. DKC was, and thanks to Retro, still is huge, and K. Rool was DK's Bowser in those games and even side games like DK64 and the spin-offs. I will not be surprised at all if we see K. Rool come back in the next DKC game after the incredible reception he's had here in Smash.

Also, if we play by relevance, a large chunk of the whole roster would need to be cut, as Smash has a lot of smaller characters and franchises represented in it.

I still take it that K. Rool's inclusion and popularity is foreshadowing his return for future DK games.

I think there's a strong correlation--mainly being in Smash both acknowledges a character's popularity and increases their popularity among the uninitiated giving game developers who would potentially use that character ideas. I think it was rumored that Sakurai and Nintendo weren't aware of King K Rool's popularity until the ballot. Now that they know, they may use him in future installments, hopefully.

Everyone is different when it comes to Smash and that is what makes speculation so great. IMO, K. Rool was the only HYPE worthy Newcomer. Ridley was an "eventually going to happen" character to me. Simon was leaked with Ridley early on, so that furthered the not as surprising factor for me, but K. Rool damn... Never have I seen such a beautiful resurgence of a gaming villain.

I completely understood why many were saying that he was irrelevant and will never be in. I'm just glad Sakurai did what needed to be done. K. Rool is to DK... as Bowser is to Mario.. You honestly shouldn't have one without the other, especially in a supreme game like Smash. It still shocks me seeing him in.. I believe it only because I have to. I was not ready to see his reveal on that fateful day.. And I wouldn't have been ready any time after.

It'd be nice if Sakurai talked about him a little more, but eh, I'll take what I can get. K. Rool getting in did more than give DK his prime villain, it shut people the hell up about how irrelevant and what not such a character is. Here is to all of you out there that still had hope somewhere deep inside. (Cheers)

Now someone leak the entire roster already...! xD
