Unpopular opinion: I want to have the entire roster as fast as possible and don't want to go through a long series of unlocks. Even though the process will be "streamlined" I feel like it will still take a while. A "tournament mode" that unlocks everything for competitive a la ARMS would be great for people like me who just want to get the game and start playing with the entire roster.

So I just remembered, Nintendo is now starting to get more and more serious with every year The Game Awards happen. Last year we had both announcements of the Breath of the Wild's last DLC and Bayonetta 3, so would you guys expect something Smash related? This could even go beyond Smash, if you wanna throw in some other announcements you can think of.

I think in the case of unlocking characters, maybe an unlock code (i.e., a specific button combination) could work for tourney setups, kind of like unlocking specific characters in Street Fighter games. It would be a lot easier than lugging around a bunch of amiibo for quick unlocks if you just want to hop straight in with every character unlocked.

I could see a Smash announcement possibly at the Game Awards, and maybe for a DLC character, depending on who it would be. A hypothetical Dante or someone like him could work in that situation I feel.

As for others games, it is hard to say. I'm thinking Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 feel like the best choices to show off there, but maybe something completely unexpected could show up as well.

This is what happens when a community stifled the idea of clone fighters for so long as "wasted slots".

When the opportunity for non-cooties clones shows itself, we got a bit nuts with it.

I can see as many Echos are new characters, whatever the final number may be.

Everyone is Here was great but I feel like one of the best things about Ultimate speculation is no more witch hunts for clones. I don't want them to go crazy with it but it feels so good being able to say I like Dark Pit/Dr. Mario or I wouldn't mind a few more echoes.

So, do you all think Echo Fighters should be unlocked on the same stage with their original? As in, should they be unlocked at the same time as the fighter they're based on? Nothing big, but I'm curious.


Do you have any footage? Any characters you remember trying out? I would love to see analyses on the characters you tried!

I don't have any footage, though I can tell you I played all of the following:

4 times each: ICs, DK, PKMN Trainer (Zard only)
2 times each: Bowser, Little Mac
1 time each: Ryu, Ike, Ganondorf, Ridley, Inkling

I've also played Samus, Pikachu, Mewtwo, Link and Snake at a previous event. ICs are the ones I've played the most overall.

Leaker hasn’t posted anything since which could mean they were caught, lending more credence to this being real

After watching a lot of evidences in regards to changes of portraits, and how some get transparent when a playable is in fact in front of their portrait, as well as some other things, I actually think I might believe it myself. And I did not believe the ArtsyOmni "leak".

This is crazy to me. It's very impressive if it's fake indeed.

Echoes are great and all, but unique characters honestly just bring far more to the game then any amount of echoes ever could, even if they're characters I never even asked for.

Smash Brothers isn't just a crossover, it's a game in its own right. Ultimately I think gameplay should hold priority over character count.

Based on the confirmed roster so far, who do you guys plan on using when you play Squad Strike? Your choices can include mains from past games, those you consider using in Ultimate, or any other criteria you deem fit. I'll be listing a few variances myself.

For my newcomer choices, there is a good chance some of them may become new mains or secondaries, thus shifting the teams around a bit, but I figured it would be fun to build teams in advance. I'm actually really looking forward to this mode, it was one of my highlights from the 8/8 Direct, which already had a lot of great new features being announced. Would be especially lovely if we could play both this mode and Smashdown online.

Echoes are great and all, but unique characters honestly just bring far more to the game then any amount of echoes ever could, even if they're characters I never even asked for.

Smash Brothers isn't just a crossover, it's a game in its own right. Ultimately I think gameplay should hold priority over character count.

This exactly.
It'd be great if we could get an insurmountable roster size with Ultimate, and I think regarding 95% of fighting games, we're practically already there.
However, more people care about the characters included in that number, not the roster size alone.
Like take a look at a game like MvC2, it had one of the largest fighting game rosters for a while, but there wasn't too much variation between all the shotos and clones.
While it is still praised to this day about the roster size and gameplay, moreso the latter, that's one of the biggest problems with the game itself.
So I'd honestly take a smaller amount of unique fighters and movesets over ones that pad out the roster, as more people genuinely care about the different types of characters there.

What people don't realize is that 4Chan does these things all the time. Most of them are fake and I assume that one is too. I figure the only reason it got traction is because of who it is and everyone expects that character to be in the game. I haven't seen any new images but the fact there was on;y one and it was originally zoomed in tells me it was fake. There were some other odd things on it too like the odd lighting and the icons being wrong.

Yeah cause we should trust the guy who said Odyssey would fail to match BotW sales when implying a game can't get graphical changes since a March made demo. Waaaaaay too jany things check out including minor graphical glitches and clipping

100% real. It is impossible to obtain Moray Tower assets and doctor them, especially with the ink splashed throughout the stage being completely absent.

One thing I'm hoping for assuming some of the rumors are true about Spirits and Medusa gets in. She's the leader of the group of villains (Bowser, Bowser Jr., Ganondorf, King Dedede, King K. Rool, Mewtwo, Ridley and Wolf) only for Ganondorf to decide to betray her (He could be similar to Hades to her in Uprising) and start leading but due to Bowser not trusting him convinces some of the others to side with him while Ganondorf gets his own side as well. King Dedede however is on no one's side and simply does things on his own which would be very in-character for him to do.

How I'd imagine the teams.

Team Bowser: Bowser Jr., King K. Rool, Medusa (After convincing her and that she can trust him unlike Ganondorf. That and she'd want revenge on him for betraying her)
Team Ganondorf: Mewtwo, Ridley, Wolf

tbf the DMCV has 2 things wrong so far, Dante's theme was described as typical Shootie stuff and that the character revealed in the TGS trailer would summon angels, who were stated to not be in the game

I'm just going to give you a little tip:

Moray Towers doesn't have assets (inkless or otherwise) available anywhere for people to doctor up from a Smash 4 mod to make it look believable like this. It's the real deal.

You don't browse 4Chan much I assume. People have made tons of these things. Leaks have happened from 4Chan, yes. But so have a hell of a ton of bogus ones. Just because its sometimes right doesn't mean its right here. The fact that they only posted this one image makes me doubtful. If you had access to the game, you'd have more than a single image.

Or, let me put it this way. There was a thread where someone was doing Karate Joe and an anon (which I suspect was the same guy) would make request for images and then the guy who respond with an image he requested. He did this with about 5 images. People put a lot of effort into these and people have produced far more and I would say far better than this one.

Whether it comes from Smashbros.com, Kotaku, 4chan, GameFAQs, what-have-you, it makes no difference.

Reveal trailers are so much better if they're unspoiled though. Ridley and K.Rool trailers were fantastic, imo, because of the lack of spoilers regarding them but I felt almost nothing during Simon's reveal because I already saw him coming.

Sakurai himself hates leakers for this very reason.
