Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I guess I shouldn’t be talking since I’d likely just buy it anyways. Doesn’t mean I have to like it, though.
Precisely. I don't like paying more money to complete the roster either, but I'm probably gonna do it anyway.
Makes sense from a business standpoint but hurts my wallet

I'm also getting the online service out of necessity. Paying 6 bucks cause I'm on one of my pal's family plans- so I'm kinda hoping there's some kind of DLC deal with that to soften the blow a bit.

It's not anti-consumer! That is with what I disagree.
I literally gave an example of anti-consumer policy, in loot boxes.
Adding DLC before a game officially launches is not anti consumer, and throwing around your names doesnt change that reality.
It means the game is incomplete at launch, because the devs are actively withholding features from you unless you pay for them.
People got pissed the hell off at Namco for doing that with Soul Calibur VI recently.

Well, you're not part of a group labeled "Female Anatomy Experts" or anything regardless of how literal it is. And surely, pirates do more than privateering in fiction anyway. You know, the whole pillaging thing as well as being generally notorious for being violent.

Not like internet file/data pirates do much privateering either and are still "pirates" *sarcastic wink emoticon*

I was going to participate in this conversation but I forgot my tinfoil hat.
Don't let the maaaaan bring you down maaaaan
Thanks for adding a new item to my bucket list I guess. ;) Even if the definition has expanded somewhat over the years, I just don’t think “conquering the galaxy” feels like a piratey thing to do. I dunno.

No it doesnt. It means they kept working on content after the game goes gold.
Creators cannot continually add to their base creation for ever. Most games have a cut off point. That is how any non tech industry works.
You get the initial product for which you pay.

While anything else for free is amazingly consumer friendly, that does not mean it is anti consumer to be paid for the extra time put in for going above and beyond.

What you are discussing is holding back content to put it behind a pay wall, and not only is that not what happened in Smash prior, I cannot think of an example wherein Nintendo has held to this type of practice.

Do not conflate the two ideas, they are not the same.

Did the person who leaked the Ken image leak anything else?
You know what, I’m gonna make a bold statement here: If a leaker leaks one character and nothing else, it’s likely fake. Most major leaks have been multiple characters.
So far Ken is the only image leak put out by that guy.

I can't really see day 1 on disk DLC happening, but I wouldn't be surprised if some is already in development or planning.
I still think DLC is going to be free if you have switch online, but that's just me predicting.

*See's the Ken leak image*
If the Palutena leaks of old have told me anything...
That's 90% legit. Yes it's not a full shot, but it has that nice Sakurai detail to it. Especially the face(ugly as sin, but expressive)

And? It already went gold by the time Mewtwo was announced to be worked on in October.
Was exactly my point, bro.

I feel the same way. Nintendo needs to sell people on Online Services, and free Smash content / Pokemon content seems like the way to make the service catch.

I have an issue with listening to complaints against an entire market place from fans who could spend one hour less online and just earn the money to buy the item.
Are you seriously telling people who complain about DLC practices to just shut up and go work JUST to buy that DLC? Please tell me I'm misunderstanding this

It would imply that the game has to go gold at some point, and that DLC is confirmed to be coming so that we can still get content afterward.
We got DLC confirmation in the *last game* before it launched. A precedent has been set...

I'm waiting for that same announcement. We could all only be so lucky.
Self righteous moaning about how unfairness is the ignorant route to irrelevance.
But there's a difference. Mewtwo was announced in October 2014, but released in April 2015, suggesting that the development team didn't have much work done on him when he was first announced. If Minecraft and SE characters are getting leaked by anonymous sources before Nintendo can officially reveal them, then that basically confirms that these characters have been in development for some time.

In this case, Sakurai would've been working on DLC all the way back in May at the latest, which begs the questions of why he didn't go ahead and plan for these characters being in the base game, and why he didn't wait until later before letting his team put a heavy focus on DLC like other games have done (MK8, BotW, Kirby SA, etc.)

So I wake up to Smash 4's Palutena "Leak" but it's Smash Ultimate and its Ken.

Nice. Looks just as impressive as the Palutena "Leak" back in Smash 4, but that ended up being fake so idk. I'm on team real, but we'll know soon enough if it is.

I'm saying that the amount of time spent complaining is disproportionate to the amount it costs in the first place.

Additionally, I'm not saying stay silent about DLC practice. I'm saying make an informed statement and dont complain about everything that costs money simply because it costs money. Do your research and do your homework, or your point does not stand much ground.

Choose your battles, because they are not equivalent.

I would take the word of Nintendo over a leaker.
I'm sure many leakers had valid claims, but to blindly support their word because they had some information correctly, over the organization from which the information comes, blindly, is dangerous.
Or in other words- just because they leaked that content doesnt mean it was there.
Maybe the deal fell through. Maybe a million other scenarios happened.
It doesnt mean that it was true and that we are being billed because they held off.
Jump to the conclusion if you want, I know that's the easier thing to do, but that does not make the claims truthful.

See, that’s the worst possible outcome that could happen, though. On TOP of Steve being in the game at all, he’s also ****ing paid DLC along with the SE rep.
If you thought the backlash against the Switch online service was bad, wait until Steve and Geno/Sora/DQ rep get announced as pre-order bonuses/day 1 DLC.
I'm well aware it would be the worst possible outcome, hence my expectations. lol

It makes more sense to you for every rumored character aside from Ken and Incineroar to be DLC?

I've said this several times before; the simplest explanation is that the box doesn't feature all the characters. I don't think people realize how hard it is to explain why leakers would know about possible DLC characters all the way back in May (first mention of Minecraft) and August (first mention of SE rep). Knowing about them this early implies that Sakurai is pretty far in development with them, despite the fact that the game hasn't even released yet and the last few months are typically spent fixing and tweaking things.
I'm just avoiding having unrealistic expectations at this point. If there's more than Incineroar and Ken in the base game, of course, I'll be happy.

But to be honest, I'm satisfied with the current roster as is, so I wouldn't even mind it if it was the final roster. I've been satisfied with the roster ever since the first trailer with all veterans. I'm not supporting any newcomers this time around.

Anyone have a link to the Prima leak? I keep hearing about that leak saying there are so many characters left.

I'm also of the optimistic side that believes we will get more than 10+ unique newcomers, and the leak has my curiousity now.

Now that’s true, but even so, if the content is already done by the time the game, it should be in the ****ing game on release day, not behind a paywall.

So this entire debate has been based on a premise of information that cannot be confirmed?
That seems like a waste of time.

The fact the stage in the Ken leak looks more detailed suggests that it comes from a later build of the game and the stages had more polishing done. And I thought the stages in the demo already looked beautiful and detailed, but it seems my eyes are in for a treat in the final release.

Ok so after looking at the full-sized image it definitely looks less '2D' than I initially thought, so there's that. I still think the shading looks off but I really need another image.

May I request an individual with some intense Street Fighter knowledge tell me a bit about the history of Ken going from clone to original fighter? I would greatly appreciate it.

That picture is either the best fake I've ever seen for Smash ultimate or it's real. I'm not entirely sure.

IIRC, Ken was basically the player 2 character in the original Street Fighter and controlled identically to Ryu,

Then in, Street Fighter II, he was still very similar to Ryu but had a few differences. Later entries started to give him more and more of his own flair, alongside adding the likes of Akuma, Dan, Evil Ryu and others, each with their own quirks.

Putting it crudely, Ken is to Ryu what Luigi is to Mario.

I agree, except they are not leaks, but rumors. And rumors don't confirm anything, only official information can be taken as confirmation. Even CoroCoro doesn't "confirm" anything.

Not necessarily. It's just that I'm satisfied with the roster as is and any new addition is a nice extra.

The roster is huge at this point and there are so many characters to pick from.

Ever since Smash 3DS/Wii U DLC finished, I basically had myself thinking that the only thing keeping it from perfection was the lack of some veterans such as Snake, Wolf and Ice Climbers.

So, when Ultimate was unveiled and confirmed every single character returning, I was immediately sold on the game and happy with the roster as is. The roster was already beyond my expectations. I need nothing more, but I'll not reject anything else that may come. I'm still looking forward to the newcomers and trying them out, but none of them is a character I particularly wanted.

As with Smash 3DS/Wii U, I'll keep an eye on the DLC that will eventually come and get all characters and stages that will be released, but I'm thinking this will be the last Smash Bros. game I'll follow so closely since I don't think there's topping this game, which will surely keep me entertained for years to come.

All in all, I'm satisfied and I think Smash Bros. would end on a high note if Ultimate was the last game. And it is probably the last game in a long time.

To be fair, I kinda get where he's coming from. I mean, the DLC is only like $5, if you're honestly complaining about that amount, he's right; all it takes is an hour to do something, anything, and you can make a quick $5. There's no reason to rail against the entirety of the market just because you don't like it.

If the complaining about buying DLC is more about the practice of DLC in general, then I still disagree with those who are against it. For some companies anyway. Smash Brothers is obviously a complete game; or at least it will be. It's not releasing with like 1 mode and a handful of characters and forcing us to buy DLC to get the 'complete experience' like some other games would do. This DLC is clearly just 'extra' stuff that you really would only get if you really want the character. With the exception of Bayonetta for Smash 4 nothing there was game-breaking or 'Pay to win' like people like to throw around. The top characters were still base game characters (and Bayo ended up being banned, anyway, so again, you didn't need her to win).

When DLC is released to a game that feels 'unfinished' or if it offers an 'unfair advantage', then the practice is pretty scummy. But when its stuff just to cater to the crowd? Like a character that's evenly matched with everything already released? Then there's nothing wrong with it. It really just depends on the contents of the DLC and the company releasing it. I trust Nintendo; I don't think they'd ever be that dirtbag, so I don't have any problem with their DLC practices (especially since its still a fairly new practice for them).

But as for what he's saying; those complaining about having to purchase DLC in general? He's right. It's $5; if you can't afford that, then you probably shouldn't have the game to begin with. You can get 4x that amount just by going and cutting your elderly neighbor's lawn; get over it already.
