Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

No, it's not a character at all, I was just referring to how Tamagon's trophy was cut in the US version of Melee because of people that are uppity about Christian references in video games. Your idea is great, I was just saying.
It's not necessarily Christians that offended about Christian references in video games. Could also be someone of another religion or an anti-theist

How would yall feel if we had a Creeper instead of Steve as a fighter?

I know, it has no arms, but you can do anything in Minecraft so...they might not care...?

Explosive attacks, firework rockets, maybe include other Minecraft creatures...

...I'm basically just sayin' this 'cause it's my favorite MC mob...
Imo Steve just works so much better as the playable one. But if there's minecraft content Creeper need to be an Assist or part of the stage.
I know a lot of people will be upset with a Minecraft character but it wouldn't be a bad addition at all considering how successful the game still is.

Remember that Smash also needs to draw younger people and potential new fans to the series too.

And while I'm at it, and I know I might get flak for considering this, a Fortnite character could even be a DLC candidate.
i'm really meh on the Fortnite character's moveset potential. I doubt it would get in before Minecraft and the fornite character's potential is pretty much Snake+Steve.
Hell no.
They still have Luigi's Mansion, F-Zero, Rhythm Heaven, Golden Sun, Majora's Mask, Wave Race, and many other franchises to choose content from.
Majora's Mask isn't a franchise. Just say Skull Kid, 'cause character is pretty much the only thing MM doesn't have.
So, which SE rep (aside from Geno) would you like to see the most being added in Smash?
For me, it's either Agent 47 or Adam Jensen
Since SquareEnix owns Taito.

Interesting thought...how is the character representation by series?

Here's a table, sorted by unique/semi-clone/echo for each series. It’s organized in that order; ties are broken by which hit the representation first.

I’m also on my phone so I hope the formatting is okay. The first two series bork my table alignment. Let’s just say it’s decently obvious which series gets the most love here...

Unique.....................Semi-Clone................Echo
:ultpikachu::ultjigglypuff::ultmewtwo::ultpokemontrainer::ultpokemontrainer::ultpokemontrainer::ultlucario::ultgreninja:...:ultpichu:...

I'm surprised you did all of that over your phone. Nice work.

It's actually really useful to conversations of "representation" to have visuals like this. I almost feel like you should give it its own thread.

Oh, my mistake, George Newbern, Justice League's Superman, is Sephiroth. I didn't know they changed VAs between series.
Ah ok. I loved the Batman TAS and Superman TAS of the 90's and know the names of the two voice actors (who also reprised their roles for Justice League). Sephiroth didn't sound like Tim Daly, but these guys are Voice Actors for a living, so I didn't question it knowing they can probably change their voices up a bit for different roles. Like How Vic Mignogna does the voice for both Edward Elric and Broly. Kinda figure they can all vary like that.

People acting like Minecraft isn’t an influential and popular game, and that Steve would be out of place among WFT and Duck Hunt

The funny thing about Steve is that his alternate costumes could literally be anything.

1 would definitely be Alex, and I imagine he would have his Mario skin as well
I bet he get's a Herobrine skin. "-Removed Herobrine" is a long-running joke from Mojang in the game's update logs, and he sometimes appears in official artwork.

Literally nothing changes except he get's white eyes and a goatee (except his default appearance may keep the goatee so idk).

I find it interesting that Reyn, Melia and Sharla are not featured in Smash. They managed to add Seven to Shulk's final smash, and even retained Riki as an AT AND a Final Smash asset, but these 3 are missing.

Gonna make a bold prediction: They are being saved to make Melia or Reyn a character in the future. Both characters bring something completely original to Smash and their final smash will incorporate the other 2 into it.

Not saying that Elma couldn't happen either, just treating their absence as interesting.

Funny enough, any new Xenoblade newcomer can be supported by the Music Theory if you think it has merit.

It's impossible to deny how important Minecraft is, but it fits much better as just a stage to me. It'd be like adding a Tetromino because Tetris is popular.

I’m honestly super interested to see what Sakurai does with a Minecraft rep if Steve does get in. The blocks open up a lot of interesting play style possibilities

I remember seeing my younger brother jokingly voting for Steve on the ballot. Thing is at the time I told him he'll never be in Smash.

Interesting how things have changed since then.

In a world where Sakurai didn't add Heihachi because he felt the moveset would be too hard to adapt, adding a character with 3 degrees of freedom on their limbs feels odd, unless they give him awful bendy limbs.

With worms I have also idea in my mind

I'd like to have Alex from Street of Rage, Jim from Earthworm Jim, The dude from Comix Zone (Sketch Turner if I remember his name right ?) oh and why not Ristar and Alex Kidd.

Also NiGHTS can be a good second rep for Sega.

To be fair:

1) No one was really asking for Wii Fit, ROB, G&W or Duck Hunt characters before their inclusion.
2) Steve isn't exactly a major point of Nintendo history.

I don't personally want Steve in the game, but I understand why he could possibly get in. Still, he's not quite the same as the other "wtf" characters we've gotten.

I think people are having a rough time accepting not only a western franchise, but an odd franchise in Smash that isn't strictly related to Nintendo. Its super popular, and Steve opens the floodgates to let other western- 3rd party characters like Rayman, Crash, Spyro or Banjo in, I'd say hell yes bring him in, even if I don't personally like him too much.

Smash shouldn't just be Japanese only franchises that are related strictly to Nintendo, IMO its time to evolve and be accepting of everything, especially since Nintendo doesn't have TOO many unique first party franchises left, with Golden Sun and Rhythm Heaven being some of their biggest remaining.

It can still be 90% Japanese, but there are quite a few western characters that are just as iconic as mario and zelda.

Wouldn't the Miis technically all be semi-clones since all their possible moves are derived from other characters' movesets?

Honestly though, if you've actually played Minecraft, You know there is tons of Moveset potential for Steve

Possibly. Their proportions and properties are so different it's hard to say if they drew directly from characters or if their developers just used other moves as references.

To be honest, I'd put Wii Fit Trainer and the Miis together as representing the Wii in general. But that's just me.

Guys, you are all talking about FF and DQ and Geno about the Square Enix rep but... isn't Life is Strange also done by SE?

I like Geno but we are talking about Mewtwo.

A similar newcomer would probably need to cater more than hardcore fans.
That's a good point...I'm one of those people that needs everyone on the roster regardless if I want them or not (feels less complete to me without them) but not everyone feels that way.
I don't know man, if they were to release around 6 DLC characters for $5 each during a year, then it wouldn't make sense to release them separately since one could just purchase the Online for $20 and have them all for cheaper.
Oh I just meant the first dlc fighter.
So they are available for free immediately for Online subscribers, and free a month later for everyone else. This way Nintendo can still make a nice payout on them.

I wish they would do more free dlc characters like ARMS, but it's Smash. It's gunna be paid beyond an initial subsrciption incentive character.

Published only. The devs are DONTNOD (for the original LiS) and I forgot who’s in charge of Before the Storm

Wii Fit is it's own franchise, though, it was on Wii U.

Miis are also multi-system but they are from an app, rather than a game.

For anyone else feel like Smash is running out of Nintendo content to choose from?
No. We still only have one F-Zero character, one Xenoblade character, no Warioware rep, no Golden Sun rep, no Advance Wars rep, no Excitebike Racer, no Dixie Kong, no Ninten

Wait Vergeben spoke about another leaker mentioning Steve? I didn't find any recent posts from him on Gamefaqs :/ Reddit?

Yes. At least from what I've seen and can tell. There is a connection somewhere between what I have heard and Senjougahara__Hitagi hears. Like they said. I know some things they don't, they know some things I don't. But it seems to meet in the middle at times.

So, the logo could either be the grass block (which is what it actually uses for its launcher icon), a Creeper face, or maybe a pickaxe.

Steve actually makes a ton of sense; Nintendo seems to love Minecraft, and even has a bit of stuff for it, including a Creeper-themed 2DS. I can see Nintendo helping Sakurai get Steve from Mojang; Microsoft seems much more loose with Minecraft than anything else, and they just let Mojang do their own thing (though they do supply devs for the Bedrock Edition, a.k.a. "Better Together").

What I feel is often overlooked is how much untapped moveset potential the series has to offer. Star Fox Adventures, Star Fox: Assault, Star Fox Zero, and Star Fox Guard all offer a ton of material for potential movesets.

Krystal would likely have a moveset based entirely off of Star Fox Adventures, making use of the staff. The staff was the focus of gameplay in Adventures, being used both in combat, and to move about the world. The abilities in the game can be easily brought over into Smash, and would fit in quite well. I made a moveset for Krystal a few months back based around the staff, if you're interested in learning more.

Slippy on the otherhand could pull from Star Fox: Assault, Star Fox Zero, and Star Fox Guard. Assault features many gadgets and weapons that'd be useful standard attacks, Star Fox Zero features a few things that'd make for specials or a Final Smash, and Star Fox Guard offers the AegisCam sentries that could potentially be the focus of his moveset. Plus, he's the team's mechanic, so use of tools would make a lot of sense for him as well. I also made a moveset for him that focuses on all three games.

Take these two and their potential in contrast to when Fox was made in Smash 64. Back then, there wasn't too much to go by, so Sakruai improvised. You could argue that some of his moves are reminiscent of the Arwing's abilities in Star Fox 64, such as his reflector being similar in function to the barrel roll, or Fox Illusion similar to the boost. Otherwise, his moveset is an original creation.
Considering we dont have a Pokemon character (short of Trainer, in theory), that represents *any* mechanics of Pokemon in any of its subgenres, and all of the Mario characters... I dont think representing the spinoffs in moveset seems to be of any concern.
