Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

That’d be amazing too. Oh my god. That was my favorite outfit in BOTW. Well, besides the cross dressing gerudo outfit
Breath of the Wild has so many LGBT archetype Links.

Midriff Link, Gender-bending Link, Rubber Link, Raver Link, I-just-showed-up-in-my-underwear-LOL! Link.

Love it.

I’m so here for it. I hope Sakurai adds the gerudo outfit or undies Link as an alt costume Ala Shulk bathing suit.

If we get a story mode here are some bosses I'd like to see

Nidoking and Nidoqueen who you would fight as a pair
Boom-Boom
Kracko
A new boss called Giga Charizard which brings back the non-playable aspect of Giga Bowser

There should also be a Swim Race minigame

1-Wario debutted in Smash like that. He didn't have one design for 4 games and then it was changed.
Two things:

A) Wario appeared as a trophy in Melee, where he was in his overalls.
B) Link was actually in his The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time design in the original Super Smash Bros. and Melee. His The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess design was used for Brawl first.

Many games have used vocal songs by popular artists recorded specifically for the game.
Nintendo isn't Rockstar. Studies have shown that I'm more likely gonna give birth to a Dark Souls monster out of my ass than it is that Nintendo is gonna give some one hit wonder, mid-2000's, Chris Daughtry wanna be band with some 2 other "artists" sing a parodied version of someone else's song for this game. I just went through their song titles and I can already feel the paper-cut edge that this band is supposed to make you feel. Hatsune Miku would be a better choice to sing for this game because at least the world knows who she is.

2-Wario's design is in no way at the same level as Link's
Plenty of veterans have changed their designs and I would wager to say Wario's overalls are much more iconic than his biker outfit and they have been around for way longer.

I think it makes sense to have characters appear in whatever their modern form is, and make it optional to pick their other iconic form. It also makes veterans appear fresh. One of my favorite things about Brawl was that they made every veteran feel like a newcomer.

Past history is important, but so is celebrating this generation, especially for kids who are growing up with these games. Breath of The Wild is starting the series anew, and it's quite possible Link could be taking on this design in future games.

I would MUCH rather prefer Wario be in his overalls and represent Wario Land games, and before Breath of The Wild, I would have said the same thing about all the Zelda characters because I feel Twilight Princess has perfect character designs that encompass everything we know about them. But, I understand this decision fully.

Still, the least Sakurai could do is give Wario his shoulder ram and maybe a Wario Land stage.

Any non-human mammal should also appear with realistic fur, and that includes Pokemon. I've always wanted Pikachu with realistic fur.

You're referring to this dress, right?.

Yeah, the blue dress would ideal for Smash, especially since her normal BotW outfit doesn't look very princess-ish.

Honestly, I'm fine with any of the three outfits Zelda uses in BotW (traveling outfit, royal blue dress, and ceremonial white dress). In an ideal world we'd get all three, but I'm not crossing my fingers for that. I might even be getting ahead of myself by saying the BotW design will even be used for Zelda (seems likely, but nothing is confirmed just yet)
After getting used to it. I'm okay with this Zelda appearing in Super Smash Bros.

The previous Zelda is much cooler and people will definitely take issue with this now that she's much sissier. But, I like this game A LOT and I like this version of Zelda. And Zelda has many incarnations similar to this one, such as Skyward Sword.

I'm not just okay with this. I'm rooting for it. And I definitely wanna see this version of Zelda in Sheik form.

Not to pick sides here but a trophy isn’t comparable to his playable debut. And picking apart the fact that Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess versions of Link doesn’t help your argument. You’re just being selective. Both his oot and tp designs are both the iconic Green Tunic. Change from OoT to TP Link is not comparable to his major aesthetic change from Breath of the Wild.

I want to chime in in regards to the Zelda roster since that’s where all the speculation is right now. I actually believe that there’s a good chance that BotW Link will be his own character in this game. I have a feeling that traditional Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf will retain their TP appearances and we’ll get Champion Link as the new Zelda rep. It would be a little weird to see BotW Link be the default Link while everyone else has their TP forms, and everyone else doesn’t necessarily have BotW forms to upgrade to. Especially in Ganondorf’s case, and; although not impossible, I can’t seem to imagine Zelda’s current moveset being used by BotW Zelda. It just seems like it would be awkward without an overhaul to her moveset.

We didn’t get a new Zelda character in Smash 4 while Mario, Pokemon, and Fire Emblem all got new characters, so it would make sense to think that Sakurai might feel that it’s time for Zelda to get some additional character attention this time around. We all know how all of the other Zelda characters in the past didn’t make it past Assist Trophy status, and I don’t think that any of the Champions from BotW are any more feasible. Two of the five characters on the Zelda roster are already different incarnations of the same characters, so I don’t think it’s unlikely that we could get a third Link. BotW Link already has so much more moveset and mechanic potential that could really differentiate him from the other two Links, and I think just pasting Link’s current moveset onto him would be a disservice to this new incarnation of Link. He is also from a really popular Zelda game that rivals that of Ocarina of Time, so I find it likely that Sakurai would choose him to be our unique Zelda character this time around. It would also explain why he’s right handed in the trailer.

Of course that’s just my own thoughts and speculation, and as always everything I said could be wrong. But I just have a feeling that this is the direction Sakurai is going with when it comes to the Zelda roster. I’ve said in the past that it seems Sakurai feels the best way to represent the Zelda franchise is to include different incarnations of these same characters since that’s what the Zelda games are about, and the possible inclusion of BotW Link would seem to back that up.

I doubt Sakurai will change one of the most recognisable designs in gaming history to a new one that's just in one game. It's just not like his design philosophy at all.
What has Sakurai done in his past works that leads you to believe his design philosophy is strictly against bringing characters up to date with their latest appearance? The only thing I could think of is not making Link and Zelda have their Skyward Sword appearances in Smash 4, but beyond that it seems the opposite.

He made FLUDD one of Mario's specials, despite it being a one-game gimmick. He totally redesigned Pit by himself for no other reason than to look more modern.

Due to just how popular BotW is, Link's blue tunic is kind of iconic already. I'm sure the green tunic will still be an alt, but especially considering that the Zelda devs said they're done with the green tunic and hat, I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai fully updated his main look.

As to why he showed up in the trailer like that? I don't know, probably just to say "hey, we have some other new stuff too!".
If BotW Link is just an alternate costume why would it be featured so prominently over the green tunic Link? It's kind of implied there will be more new content beyond Inklings, even if it's just a port.

Mario never got a costume swap as big as Link did in BotW and putting him there with an Odyssey outfit would just be out of place.
Link's main appearance in the latest game (which was an absolute hit) and an optional costume you can buy in Mario Odyssey aren't comparable.

Having Link's default appearance be his now-well-known Champion's Tunic and having Mario's default appearance be an optional sombrero and poncho aren't the same thing.

1-IT'S JUST A GODDAMN TROPHY NOT AN ACTUAL PLAYABLE CHARACTER
2-The general design is still the same: green tunic with green pointy hat. Link changes design in every Zelda game if you want to be pedantic but the fact still remains his defining visual still remains intact.

After Odyssey I'm pretty excited for the potential costumes we might get: Safari, Builder, Scientist, Pirate, and let's not forget this one:

I'm OK with this as long as we get a TP palette swap.

I honestly still love the TP designs, but yeah, more alts to show off their designs is nice. It does help that TP and SS designs have right-handed Links too, so... it shouldn't be super hard to keep it consistent.

Let me settle the Link debate. BOTW Link and Classic Link should both be in, with different movesets. Combined with Toon Link, fans of Link should have plenty to be happy about.

I see Toon Link staying the same with Zelda(maybe new down special?) and Link having new alts but same moves, and Ganon staying the same.
Something new for the Zelda characters would be cool though.

I always liked the BotW design. It's one of the few Zelda designs to feature a hairstyle that I could actually see in real life without going to a video game convention.

But seriously, I think this Zelda is very underrated. I'm really glad that there's a genuine chance of seeing her in Smash. I just hope people don't continue to criticize the voice acting if new lines are recorded.

It's also exciting to think of what Sheik and Ganondorf will look like. It's possible they'll be unchanged, but I'm hoping they'll at least try to redesign them so they match the BotW artstyle. Maybe we'll finally get a Ganondorf with long hair.

I think really the only thing you'd need to change in current Link's moveset to make it fit with BotW Link is removing the gale from the boomerang. Besides that, BotW Link still has all those moves, and there's not really much else he has.

He has the runes, but none of those are really practical as Smash moves, besides the bomb, which he already has. They would just need to change the bomb animation to make it looks like he's using the rune.

It's too late for that idea. They just showed a newcomer then.

I also heard BOTW doesn't have a hookshot.

I do wonder what will happen to Toon Link, if anything. He's too beloved to be cut. The Toon games are an important part of the Zelda franchise. I guess there's always his outset island outfit?

Smash!Link here will most likely have his BotW appearance as his default appearance with the classic green tunic as an alt just like Wario.

This situation puts Zelda, Sheik and Ganondorf in rather...odd situations. If they want to represent more Zelda games, they could do this:

- Smash!Link gets reworked into BotW Link to represent BotW
- Smash!Zelda keeps her TP appearance to represent TP or be upgraded to her HW design. BotW!Zelda or SS!Zelda could be alts
- Smash!Ganondorf could be reworked into HW Ganondorf to represent HW or an original design
- Smash!Sheik could go either with her cool HW design, an original design or go back to her original OoT appearance to represent OoT

So instead of having a shared “theme”, each character can represent a different game to switch things up. (pun not intended)

SmashToon Link is just WW!Toon Link so he’s spared from this.

Before anyone would go and attempt to blast me with “What about Koei-Tecmo!?” comments, this is just speculation and I don’t think Koei-Tecmo would object.

Also, ever since WarioWare became a thing, Wario has only used his original outfit in Mario spin-offs.
If BotW Link became the staple from now on(even though that'll never happen)? Yeah, I could see him becoming default, but it's literally been just one game.

Adding moves to characters is completely different from outright changing their design.
Look at any of the original characters from Smash 64 and tell me which one of them have received this big of a design change in a Smash game.

"So prominently"
It was, like, two seconds in one trailer dude

HW warrior designs are probably not the way to go, but I think it would be a great idea to further desynchronize the LoZ designs. It gives better representation and makes more sense now that Zelda and Sheik are split up. It also limits the weirdness of "but they're the same person" to Z/Samus, since they aren't just different designs but separate characters.

Why not a character that most Zelda fans love. Like Skull Kid + Majora's Mask? That's one hell of a popular Zelda character/game.
Because of BotW's critical reception. Is was so widely accepted and praised, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a character or representation for the new game. Nintendo is pushing Switch hard and a game as big as Smash will likely showcase their new, best, and brightest junk.
